Miranda Lambert “Wildcard” Tour sweeps the stage at Coachella Crossroads By Alison Elsner

O

n immediate glance at petite, blond country music singer and songwriter Miranda Lambert, it’s easy to conclude she’s made of sugar and spice. Once she starts belting out songs, however, the assessment switches over to a tough cookie with steelyresolve - an empowered woman who can take care of herself. Top hits that bear this out include “Gunpowder and Lead,” which became her first top 10 entry on the country music charts in 2008, and the album “Kerosene” (2005), which was certified Platinum in the United States with four of the album’s singles reaching the top 40 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. This powder keg of talent will be performing as part of Coachella Crossroads, and the audience can expect to hear trademark tunes from albums such as “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” which was released in 2007, “Revolution,” released in 2009, and “Platinum,” which won the Grammy Award for Best Country Album in 2014 and treated fans to the lead single, “Automatic,” which reached the top five on the country charts. Her sixth studio album, “The Weight of These Wings,” was certified Platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA). Her seventh studio album, “Wildcard,” was released in 2019 and went on to win the Grammy Award for Best Country Album in early 2021. Three singles from the album reached the top 20 of the country music charts, and the album’s second official single “Bluebird” became Lambert’s first song to top the Billboard Country Airplay Chart as a solo artist since 2012. In 2021, she announced her upcoming collaborative record, “The Marfa Tapes,” with fellow singer-songwriters Jon Randall and Jack Ingram, released on May 7, 2021. It was met with vast critical acclaim, given its departure from Lambert’s usual sound and its acoustic, stripped-back feel. Lambert’s demonstrative style and ability to captivate her audiences are especially wellsuited for the Coachella Crossroads venue, a 50-acre outdoor entertainment complex located adjacent to Spotlight 29 Casino in Coachella and developed by The Twenty-Nine Palms Band of Mission Indians.

unnyman George Lopez usually doesn’t shy away from topics that stir people up, including politics, race, culture and immigration, which explains why his stage performances not only leave audiences rapt but also in stitches, doubled over in laughter. He has a knack for turning painful experiences into hilarious commentary. The Grammy-nominated comedian, actor and TV host has teamed with Bill Burr and Al Madrigal’s “All Things Comedy” to release his new podcast, “OMG Hi! With George Lopez,” after which is current tour is named. Lopez’ multifaceted career encom-

passes television, film, standup comedy and late-night television. He scored with his 2020 Netflix comedy special “We’ll Do It For Half,” and he has been featured in four HBO specials: “The Wall” (2017), “It’s Not Me, It’s You” (2012), Grammy-nominated “Tall, Dark and Chicano” (2009) and “America’s Mexican” (2007). His acclaimed comedy concert, “Why You Crying?”, debuted on Showtime in 2004, and he’s a prolific television presence. His live shows share his abundant genius, in this case to the delight of ticket holders who were originally set to catch the April 2021 show before it was rescheduled.

his cult favorite, created, written and directed by Del Shores, tells the story of unconditional love, acceptance and “coming out” in a Texas family, as they converge for the matriarch’s funeral. The original stage play premiered in Los Angeles in 1996 and ultimately won 14 Drama-Logue Awards. This is the eighth time the show has hit the stage at the Palm Canyon Theatre. This year, many favorite performers reprise their roles, including Judith Chapman as Latrelle; Se Layne as Dr. Eve; Mike Hadley as Brother Boy; Morgana Corelli as Juanita; Tiffani

LoBue as LaVonda; Francesca Amari as Bitsy Mae; Ralph Strangis as G.W.; Michele Davis as Sissy; Laurie Holmes as Noleta; David Brooks as Wardell; Sean Timothy Brown as Ty; and Nick Edwards as Odell and Rev. Barnes. The eccentric characters’ lives intertwine in storylines that include a mother in denial over her gay son; a barfly/singer at the local watering hole; a cheating heart with wooden legs; and his wife who tries her hand at revenge therapy. Audiences will appreciate the twists, turns and similarities to many of our own family experiences and challenges.
