Aaron Lewis
Musician finds success as a country music star, moving audiences with powerful tunes
Country fans should get their boots out of the closet in preparation for Aaron Lewis, who will soon hit the stage. In 2010, Lewis made the leap from nu metal band founding member of Staind to a solo career in country music, showcasing his talent as lead vocalist and rhythm guitarist. His debut EP, “Town Line,” was released in 2011. Lewis’s first full-length solo release, “The Road,” was released by Blaster Records in 2012.
Fans can likely expect to hear some of his country chart toppers, including “Country Boy” (which he recorded with George Jones and Charlie Daniels), “Endless Summer,” “Forever,” “Granddaddy’s Gun,” “That Ain’t Country,” and “Am I the Only One,” this last track which is off his fourth solo album, “Frayed at Both Ends,” released in early 2022.
Lewis was born in a log cabin. He said in a July 2011 interview that he was introduced to country music as a child by his grandfather, but his interest was rekindled when he toured with fellow rock turned occasional country singer Kid Rock. His music often focuses on social themes and perspectives.
Aaron Lewis takes the stage on Thursday, May 18 at 8 p.m. Spotlight 29 Casino is located at 46200 Harrison Place in Coachella. Tickets range from $55-$90, call 760-775-5566 or visit spotlight29.com for more info.
Fascinating facts about The Twilight Zone
• TOnly one episode has a sequel. Despite hav ing two reboots in 1985 and 2002, The Twilight Zone only has one episode with a second part. The original series’ season three episode “It’s A Good Life” was turned into a sequel in the 21st-century reboot. Cloris Leachman and Bill Mumy reprised their respective roles of the mother and her mindcontrolling son, making them the only two actors to appear in both the original and 2002 series.
• Only one actor appeared in all five seasons. Many actors have appeared multiple times on the program, but only one has the distinction of appearing in all five seasons. In total, Robert McCord appeared in 67
episodes, most of them as an extra.
• Serling’s on-camera introductions started in season two. Serling’s famous on-camera introductions didn’t start in earnest until the second season. During the first season, Serling only appeared on camera during the promotions for the next week’s episode.
• ‘Star Trek’ actors appeared on the series. William Shatner appeared in two episodes, “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” and “Nick of Time.” Leonard Nimoy appeared as a soldier in the Philippines during WWII in the episode “A Quality of Mercy.” George Takei played a Japanese-American man in the infamously banned episode “The Encounter.”

Mini Arts Festival at Renaissance Esmeralda

Starting at 3 p.m., visitors are welcomed to the resort’s large atrium, which is being turned into an open air gallery featuring the oil paintings of local artist Kathleen Strukoff. Coachella Valley through beverages – the Golden Hollywood Days and the Rat Pack Era and also the year-round natural desert gardens that characterize the area.
The arts tribute continues with an intimate mini-concert from 7 to 9 p.m. in the Stir meeting area. Fun With Dick And Jane Band – are multi-talented singer/songwriters who will end this day with a memorable performance that embraces the spirit of the desert.

Covid ... Still Here
As of this writing, there are still between 1,500 and 2,000 Covid deaths per week in the U.S. alone.
Pause a moment to consider that number.
Various charts, graphics and statistics for a recent period show a startling fact: We have more Covid deaths per capita than most of the rest of the world. Charts that show deaths per million people rank us three times higher than Brazil, more than 24% higher than France, 75% higher than Italy, nearly three times higher than Germany.
In the U.S., hospital admissions in 14 states are rising over the past week. Only five states showed no
cases of Covid in the past week -- because they did not upload their data. No states showed zero Covid deaths, except for the ones that didn’t provide information.
For hospital admissions by age, those over age 70 are admitted three times more often than those in the 60-69 age group, and 10 times more often than those under 60.
It’s been a long three years and, unfortunately, Covid has not vanished. At this point, we have a new subvariant, XBB.1.16, nicknamed “Arcturus.” Keep an ear out for mention of this one in the news; it’s the most infectious of all the variants so far, and the most resistant to vaccine. One in 10 cases of Covid are this new variant. It’s the one that’s causing conjunctivitis, also known as pinkeye, plus other symptoms. At this point it has shown up in over 30 states. If you have symptoms of this variant and believe it’s probably seasonal allergies, consider taking a Covid test just to be sure.
And meanwhile, inquiring minds want to know: Where are our masks? Have you noticed that you (and possibly one or two others) are the only ones in stores still wearing a mask?
While the two largest hospital systems near me have now done away with the mask requirement, I have not.

Garlicky feta eggplant pasta
Ingredients
• 1 1/2 lb. eggplant, cut into 1” cubes
• 1/2 c. plus 1 tbsp. extra-virgin olive oil, divided
• 4 cloves garlic, 2 smashed, 2 grated or finely minced, divided
• 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
• Kosher salt
• Freshly ground black pepper
• Pinch red pepper flakes
• 1/4 c. thinly sliced basil, plus more for serving
• 2 tbsp. lemon juice
• 1/3 c. panko bread crumbs
• 4 oz. feta, crumbled (about ½ c.)
• 1/2 lb. medium-sized pasta, like rigatoni
Directions
1. Preheat oven to 400°. Combine eggplant,
half cup oil, smashed garlic cloves, and oregano in a 9”-x-13” baking dish. Season with salt, pepper, and red pepper flakes and bake until eggplant is extremely tender and golden, stirring every 10 min, for about 40 min.
2. Meanwhile, make topping: In a medium bowl, combine panko, remaining 1 tablespoon oil, and ¼ of the crumbled feta.
3. In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook pasta until al dente according to package directions. Drain.
4. When eggplant is cooked, stir in sliced basil, lemon juice, and grated garlic. Season to taste with salt and pepper.
5. Switch oven to broil. Transfer cooked pasta and remaining crumbled feta to baking dish with eggplant and stir to combine. Top with panko mixture and broil until golden. Top with basil and serve.

Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival returns
The annual Arthur Lyons Film Noir Festival returns May 11-14, with an exciting lineup of classic film screenings and special guests. Founded in 2000 by the late mystery author and Palm Springs community leader, Arthur Lyons, the popular Film Noir festival includes an eclectic mixture of prestigious and obscure black and white “B” movies from the classic film noir period. The Festival is known for unearthing and screening rare films, restored classics, and for the special appearances of the stars who were in them
Festival curator Alan K. Rode will be once again joined by TCM “Noir Alley” host Eddie Muller and other special guests including producer and director James B. Harris, cinematographer and educator Nicholas Von Sternberg, actor and producer David Ladd, and songstress Victoria Mature (daughter of actor Victor Mature). The festival kicks off on Thursday, May 11, with a screening of Stanley Kubrick’s “The Killing” (1956), followed by a live discussion with the film’s producer, James B. Harris. Festival pass holders will enjoy a chance to mingle with Rode and his special guests at an opening night gala reception following the film.
Throughout the weekend, the festival will showcase a wide range of classic noir films, including “The Shanghai Gesture” (1942), “This Gun For Hire” (1942), “Blood on the Moon” (1948), and “The Naked
City” (1948). Several titles will be presented on 35mm film - a format that movie buffs rarely get the chance to enjoy outside of major metropolitan cities.
