Dear Paw’s Corner Last year, my kids dumped out their trick-ortreat candy on the kitchen table to sort through. Halfway through it, they got distracted and left. I wasn’t paying attention either, but our two Golden retrievers, “Nala” and “Jetty,” certainly were.

They both got onto the table and ate much of the candy -- of which most contained chocolate.

For pet owners who don’t know, chocolate can be deadly to dogs.

Never mind the candy wrappers that they had ingested! That led to a panicked rush to the emergency vet and an overnight stay for both our dogs. Fortunately, their size and overall good health helped keep them from suffering

• If you have someone who can deliver and assemble it, an outdoor propane grill can be a bit of summer fun in the middle of a cold winter.

• Keep an eye on sales if you need an additional pot for the extra cooking you’re doing. Stores like Target and Bed, Bath & Beyond have curbside delivery, so if you pay online you don’t have to go in the store.

Get freezer bags to store individual portions you can pull out and heat up without cooking every day.

• Splurge on one good, thick sweater or zip sweatshirt to wear in the house.

• Think about getting an air cleaner for inside the house to clean up dust mites, stale air and pet dander. Be cautious about the price of replacement filters.

• Reorganize your kitchen cabinets, pantry or linen closet shelves.

Lab Finds Tiny Amount of Blood in Her Urine Dear Dr. Roach: My question is about microscopic hematuria. I see a rheumatologist for sarcoidosis. Last year I had various lab tests, including a urinalysis. That test and several since then have shown microscopic hematuria.

The rheumatologist sent me to a urologist, who did scans and a scope of the bladder up through the right kidney. There’s a slight stricture of the right ureter. My biopsies were negative.

Tests and scans continue to be OK except for the microscopic hematuria. I am a 60-year-old woman. Is the hematuria a cause for concern? — K.E. Answer: “Hematuria” means “blood in the urine.” “Gross” hematuria means there is so much blood that it changes the urine color, while “microscopic” hematuria is recognizable only in the laboratory. Blood in the urine can

come from anywhere in the urinary system, and there is a long list of possibilities. Although the cause is sometimes never found, your physician should consider urinary tract infection, kidney or bladder stones, and, in the right age group, cancer of the kidney and bladder. CT scans and cystoscopy are commonly performed tests, and the negative result in your case is reassuring.

You have one more reason to have hematuria than others, and that is the sarcoidosis. Sarcoidosis is a condition that can affect any tissue in the body with abnormal clumps of cells called granulomata.

(Just one is called a granuloma.)

While the lungs are the most common site for sarcoidosis, it can affect the kidney, causing hematuria.

Sarcoidosis also can cause kidney damage, resulting in a high creatinine, so that should be tested. Severe kidney disease from sarcoidosis may be treated with prednisone, but you should see an expert (nephrologist) to consider this diagnosis.

The majority of people with small amounts of blood in the urine with no documented reason for it, including the cystoscopy and scans you had, will not have serious disease. Foul fowls Imagine the malodorous odor when 22 tons of chicken droppings caught fire recently in the village of Mendlesham in the English countryside, north of London. It took fire brigades from three nearby towns to put out the blaze, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. But, little could be done

How to Pick a Pumpkin A large pile of bright orange pumpkins is my visual celebration of the beginning of fall. References to pumpkins date back many centuries. The name pumpkin originated from the Greek word for “large melon,” which is “pepon.” “Pepon” was nasalized by the French into “pompon.” The English changed “pompon” to “Pumpion.” American colonists changed “pumpion” into “pumpkin.” The origin of pumpkin pie occurred when the colonists sliced off the pumpkin top, removed the seeds, and filled the insides with milk, spices and honey. The pumpkin was then baked in hot ashes.

The bright orange color of pumpkin is a dead giveaway that pumpkin is loaded with an important antioxidant: beta-carotene. Beta-carotene is one of the plant carotenoids converted to vitamin A in the body. In the conversion to vitamin A, beta carotene performs many important functions in overall health.

Current research indicates that a diet rich in foods containing betacarotene may reduce the risk of developing certain types of cancer and helps protect against heart disease. Beta-carotene provides protection against other diseases as well as some degenerative aspects of aging.

To select a pumpkin, look for one with 1 to 2 inches of stem left. If the stem is cut down too low the pumpkin will decay quickly or may be decaying at the time of purchase.

Avoid pumpkins with blemishes and soft spots. It should be heavy, although shape is unimportant. A lopsided pumpkin is not necessarily a bad pumpkin. Figure 1 pound of raw, untrimmed pumpkin for each cup finished pumpkin puree.

To prepare the pumpkin for cooking, spread newspaper over your work surface. Start by carefully removing the stem with a sharp knife. If you are planning to roast the pumpkin seeds, smash or drop the pumpkin on a hard surface to break it open. In any case, remove the stem, scoop out the seeds and scrape away all of the stringy mass.

A messy job, but it will pay off.

You can cook the pumpkin by boiling, steaming, roasting or using the microwave to create your own fresh pumpkin puree. Directions for cooking and preparing pumpkin puree are as follows: Boiling/Steaming Method: Cut the pumpkin into rather large

chunks. Rinse in cold water. Place pieces in a large pot with about a cup of water. The water does not need to cover the pumpkin pieces. Cover the pot and boil for 20 to 30 minutes or until tender, or steam for 10 to 12 minutes. Check for doneness by poking with a fork. Drain the cooked pumpkin in a colander. Reserve the liquid to use as a base for soup.

Oven Method: Cut pumpkin in half, scraping away stringy mass and seeds. Rinse under cold water.

Place pumpkin, cut side down, on a large cookie sheet. Bake at 350 F for one hour or until fork tender.

Microwave Method: Cut pumpkin in half, place cut side down on a microwave-safe plate or tray. Microwave on high for 15 minutes, check for doneness at 1-2 minute intervals until fork tender.

Preparing the Puree: Allow cooked pumpkin to cool. Remove the peel using a small sharp knife and your fingers. Place pumpkin in a food processor and puree, or alternately use a food mill, ricer, strainer or potato masher. Freeze and store in 1-cup portions in a small freezer bag for up to one year.

Slow Cooker Pumpkin Spice Latte • 6 cups coffee • 5 cups of whole milk • 1 cup of heavy cream • 1/2 cup of pumpkin puree (not pie filling) • 4 teaspoons of vanilla extract • 1/2 cup of sugar • 3 teaspoons of cinnamon, plus more for sprinkling • Whipped cream topping, optional 1. 3. Whisk the ingredients into the milk and coffee in your crock pot.

Cook on high for two hours. Then, change the heat to warm and serve the drink with a ladle into coffee cups. Top with whipped cream and a sprinkle of cinnamon, if desired. Q: With the recent death of Eddie Van Halen, it made me wonder how Ozzy Osbourne is doing.

Didn’t he have some health issues a few years ago? — E.S. A: Singer and reality TV star Ozzy Osbourne has been on the mend since having spinal surgery earlier this year. In an interview with SiriusXM satellite radio, the 71-yearold stated he still has some discomfort but is off pain medication and hopes to tour again, even if it isn’t in front of a live audience due to the pandemic.

In addition to his extensive surgery, Ozzy announced that he has Parkinson’s disease. His family certainly has had their share of health battles: Wife Sharon overcame colon cancer, and his son Jack has multiple sclerosis.

The band Van Halen first opened for Ozzy’s band Black Sabbath back in 1978. In a recent essay he wrote for “Rolling Stone” magazine, Osbourne stated, “I remember seeing Eddie do that finger-tapping thing, and that was the first time I’d ever seen anyone do that. Just when you think nobody can make guitar playing exciting, somebody like that comes out. ... He made it look easy.”

Q: Whatever happened to actress Madolyn Smith, who was in the movie “Urban Cowboy” with John Travolta?” My favorite role of hers was in a TV movie based on the Sidney Sheldon book “If Tomorrow Comes.” I miss those TV movies. Those were the good old days. — W.F. A: You have a good memory! Madolyn Smith made her acting debut playing Debra Winger’s rival in “Urban Cowboy” in 1980, and about five years later she starred in the TV movie based on the best-

A: The CBS drama series “Blue Bloods” recently resumed production for season 11, but an actual airdate for the premiere hasn’t been announced. The previous season was cut short due to the pandemic and fans were left with the cliffhanger story of a new family member named Joe, played by Will Hochman. I would keep checking the CBS.com website for updates on when new episodes will air, but hopefully you’ll see some by the end of November.

If you’re a fan of Amy Carlson, who played Linda on “Blue Bloods” until her character was tragically killed off three years ago, you can catch her on CBS’s “FBI: Most Wanted” this fall, where she’ll play a bounty hunter in a recurring role. The death of her character on “Blue Bloods” in a helicopter crash was one of the most shocking and saddest in recent memory.

A tempest in a teapot Cleanliness is next to godliness and it can pay off, big time, when you are cleaning out a cluttered garage, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. Take the guy in the U.K. who was doing just that when he came across an old teapot that belonged to his mom. He was going to donate it to a local thrift shop but decided at the last moment to get it appraised. It turned out that it wasn’t a teapot after all; it was a small Chinese wine ewer dating

back to the 18th century and it had quite a history. He put it up for auction sparking a global bidding war and fetching nearly half a million dollars. His grandfather had brought it back with him when he returned from the Far East, having served there during World War II. Above and beyond Prince Pinkney, an eighty-threeyear-old Vietnam war veteran, collapsed from heat exhaustion while doing yard work at his Fort Lauderdale, Florida home recently. Firefighters and paramedics wasted no time coming to the rescue, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC].

They not only treated Pinkney and his wife, Rebecca, they finished mowing their lawn for

them. As Fire Rescue Captain Terry Maylor put it: “Their age, what they’ve gone through, his history as a veteran serving this country.

Popular Broadway musical lecturer Glen Rosenblum returns to CVRep Popular Broadway musical aficionado Glenn Rosenblum will be joining CVRep for its Theatre Thursday presentation on October 22, 2020 at 6:00pm. Rosenblum offers entertaining Broadway musical presentations to sold-out audiences throughout the world.

On Thursday, October 22, Rosenblum will be offering a never before seen presentation of “Solo Composers”, highlighting the work of talented composers who did it all – from music to lyrics.

Audience members will hear the work of Cole Porter (Anything Goes), Frank Loesser (The Most Happy Fella), Stephen Sondheim (Company), Irving Berlin (Annie Get Your Gun) and Jerry Herman (Mame).

Glenn will journey viewers through the composers who created some of Broadway’s biggest shows.

Glenn Rosenblum is a busy celebrity talent broker, lecturer, vocalist, actor and musical mensch.

He holds a Bachelor Arts degree in theatre from The School of Theatre, Film and Television at UCLA, and has attended the School of Dramatic Arts at USC, and the New College at Hofstra University.

Eatery takes social distancing to new heights Restaurants have had to come up with ways to stay in business as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, but Dinner in the Sky, an international chain of eateries, offers diners a unique method of social distancing. Data Breach Impacts 46,000 Veterans A data breach occurred at the Department of Veterans Affairs when thieves attempted to divert medical payment funds at the Financial Services Center away from community health care providers that take care of veterans outside the VA. The minute the techies noticed the breach, they took it offline, of course, and locked it pending a security review.

If that was the whole story, it would eventually be worked out

when those providers got replacement payments from the VA. However, while the thieves were roaming around in the computers they also got the personal information of some 46,000 veterans, including Social Security numbers.

As breaches go, this is one of the smaller ones the government has experienced. Remember a few years ago when millions of veterans were compromised? Still, it’s unnerving to know your info is out there.

Those affected by the breach, or a next of kin, will have been notified by now (the thieves also went after the personal info of deceased veterans). The VA is offering credit-monitoring services at no cost.

Alerts went out by mail to those veterans affected, with instructions on how to protect personal

info. (If you did not get an alert mail, you were not in the group that was breached.) If you received an alert letter and you have questions or concerns, contact the FSC Customer Help Desk by email at VAFSCVeteransSupport@va.gov.

Unfortunately, in this hotly political climate, false rumors are the order of the day. One political party sent a snarly message to the Committee on Veterans’ Affairs claiming that in addition to the 46,000 veterans, another 17,000 providers were affected as well.

Not so. Turns out that there were 17,000 total providers who used the computer program, but only 13 were impacted and of those, only six had funds grabbed. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc.
