Palm Springs International ShortFest returns to theatres
he 27th annual Palm Springs International ShortFest returns to hold all of its screenings in-theatre at the Camelot Theatres (Palm Springs Cultural Center) from June 22-28. The festival will screen 49 curated programs showcasing 295 films including 32 World Premieres, 13 International Premieres, 46 North American Premieres and 22 U.S. Premieres. More than 5,500 short films from 104 countries were submitted. The complete line-up and schedule is available at www. psfilmfest.org and a list of films are included at the end of the release. “As we collectively move toward this next stage together, we feel a strong sense of gratitude to share the 2021 edition of ShortFest in person,” said Artistic Director Lili Rodriguez. “At the center of our plans has been a commitment to this great community of storytellers and moviegoers, and we’re excited to make our return to the silver screen a safe and enjoyable one.” ShortFest Co-Directors of Programming Linton Melita and Sudeep Sharma said, “The entire programming team was blown away by the quality and quantity of amazing films made and submitted during these unprecedented times. We think this program represents the very best work of exciting, bold, and talented filmmakers from all over the world, and we can’t wait to celebrate them by sharing their films in a theater

Warm weather is here, which ideally would coincide with ending the coronavirus restrictions that have kept us isolated for well over a year. Are you ready to come out now? Many of us aren’t, which isn’t surprising given the ever-changing facts: It’s OK to take your mask off/no, keep wearing your mask. It’s time to go out for a restaurant meal/restaurants are still limited in the number of diners they can allow. More than half the population has now been vaccinated/many younger people are refusing the vaccine. And therein lies the complication in returning all of us to normal life: those who don’t want the vaccine. Imagine my shock when I called the medical practice the day before my annual physical to ask whether all employees had been

vaccinated. “No,” said the cheerful man who answered the phone. “We’re not required to get it.” I brought this up when I saw my doctor. To his credit, he didn’t try to lie to me. Why, inquiring minds wanted to know, in a medical setting with sick people in and out all day, didn’t they require employees, especially the ones who get close enough to breathe on patients, to get the vaccine? Because, the doctor said, if they are required to take the vaccine, too many of them would just quit and the medical practice would have to shut down. It seems to me that advice from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and local governments varies by the day. But we still need to wear masks. We still need to distance ourselves from people, stay out of crowds and avoid poorly ventilated spaces. To my way of thinking, only one thing has really changed: the weather. It’s time to get out and walk, get some sunshine, build leg muscles and admire the neighbors’ flowers. Wear a hat.

Temporary closure of 49 Palms Hiking Trail in JT National Park
ANSWER ON PAGE 6
On Monday June 14, 2021 Joshua Tree National Park managers closed the 49 Palms Trail to allow bighorn sheep undisturbed access to surface water. The park is under extreme drought conditions and herds in the area are increasingly reliant on the oasis spring to survive the hot summer months. The closure will remain in place until summer monsoons provide adequate rainfall to increase water availability. Park wildlife biologists will be monitoring the situation closely. Hikers should be prepared to use other trails in the park but must
use extreme caution. All hikes should be planned to begin at or before sunrise and end by 10 a.m., or not to begin until after 4 p.m. Hiking in the middle of the day is not recommended. Summer temperatures on exposed parts of park trails can reach over 120° F (49° C) in the shade. Hiking in extreme heat can lead to serious health risks including heat exhaustion, heat stroke, hyponatremia, and death. More information on hiking smart in the heat at Joshua Tree National Park can be found at the following website: www.nps.gov/ jotr/planyourvisit/hiking.htm.

Theatre 29 to hold “The Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe” auditions Double Tomato and Brie Sandwiches Great for any large picnic -- plain or fancy. For easier serving, cut sandwiches into portions before wrapping and packing. • 1 jar (6.5-ounces, about 3/4 cup) oil-packed sun-dried tomatoes, drained and finely chopped • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil • 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar • 2 loaves (about 8 ounces each) long Italian bread • 1 pound Brie cheese, sliced, with rind left on • 2 medium tomatoes, sliced • 1 cup packed fresh basil leaves 1. In small bowl, combine dried tomatoes, olive oil and vinegar. 2. Cut each loaf of Italian bread horizontally in half. Evenly spread
dried-tomato mixture on cut sides of bread. Arrange Brie on bottom halves of both loaves; top with tomato slices and basil leaves. Replace tops of loaves. 3. If not serving right away, wrap each sandwich in plastic wrap and refrigerate. Serves 16. TIP For this recipe, we used dried tomatoes marinated in lightly salted olive oil with herbs. If you use the unseasoned variety, you may want to sprinkle them with some salt. Each serving: About 200 calories, 11g total fat (6g saturated), 28mg cholesterol, 360mg sodium, 17g total carbs, 9g protein. (c) 2021 Hearst Communications, Inc. All rights reserved
After a pandemic-induced delay of about almost fifteen months, Theatre 29 will hold auditions for open roles in the drama “The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe”. This dramatization of C.S. Lewis’ classic, set in the magical land of Narnia, faithfully recreates the magic and mystery of Aslan, the great lion; his struggle with the White Witch; and the adventures of four children who inadvertently wander from an old wardrobe into the exciting never-to-be-forgotten Narnia. Auditions will be held on Monday, July 5 at 6 p.m. on the Theatre 29 Main Stage (73637 Sullivan Road, Twentynine Palms). Artistic Director Char Childs is looking for an active and ethnically diverse group (especially kids!) to join her in this very physical and magical production. This story will be told with a rich mix of drama and movement. Makeup, costumes, and changes in physicality will represent the
various creatures of Narnia. The roles of The White Witch, Mrs. Beaver, Tumnus & Fenris Ulf have been precast. The creative team is looking to cast the roles of Aslan, The four Pevensie children: Lucy, Edmund, Susan, and Peter, Mr. Beaver, The Centaur, The Dwarf, Father Christmas and his elf, The White Stag, 4 Woodland Creatures & 5 Wood Nymphs. Roles for children are available. Rehearsals will be Monday - Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. July 6 – August 19. A complete breakdown of the characters can be found on the Theatre 29 website at theatre29. org/auditions. Those auditioning should dress ready to move and be prepared to read for any role. If you are unable to attend the auditions on July 5 but would still like to be considered for the show, contact the director. For more information, contact Director Char Childs at 760-401-5106 or by email at childsme@msn.com.

Blue Water Navy Agent Orange Claims One of the first lawsuits brought against the Department of Veterans Affairs for benefits for veterans who were exposed to Agent Orange was in 1986. At issue in Nehmer v. U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs was the fact that the only medical condition acknowledged by the VA was chloracne ... a very serious skin condition caused by exposure to dioxins and dibenzofurans. It’s
been a very long haul since then to get the VA to acknowledge (and pay for) other damage done by Agent Orange. The Nehmer Law was created for veterans, spouses, children and parents of any Vietnam veteran who should have received exposure benefits but didn’t. Since 1991, the VA has paid out billions of dollars in AO exposure benefits for diabetes, ischemic heart disease, Parkinson’s disease, cancers and more, but they’ve resisted every step of the way. In November 2020, attorneys went back to court to force the VA to address the exposure suffered by Blue Water Navy veterans who literally drank, breathed and showered in AO while on ships in the harbor. The Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019 extended the presumption
of exposure to include more than aboard-ship service. Now, thanks again to Nehmer, the VA is required to readjudicate any denied Blue Water claims. The reviews started in April. No new claim is required, and any changes to claims are supposed to be automatic. It applies not only to veterans, but their survivors as well. Still at issue is whether the VA will pay retroactively for denied claims. To learn more, go online to congress.gov and search for H.R.299 -- Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019. For eligibility specifics, go to va.gov and search for Agent Orange. And if you’d like to know where the class action lawsuit began, look up Beverly Nehmer. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

A cold concoction perfect for summer nights Summer is synonymous with many things. Vacations, warm weather and al fresco dining are part and parcel of many people’s summertime routines. Another beloved routine is enjoying a cold beverage on a warm summer evening. As summer breezes invite scores of people outside to relax on their patios, decks or balconies, a cold beverage can be just what’s needed to take such relaxing nights one step further. The following recipe for “Summer Cantaloupe” from Andrew Schloss’ “Homemade Liqueurs and Infused Spirits” (Storey Publishing) is easily whipped up and can go a long way toward making summer evenings especially sweet.
Summer Cantaloupe Makes about 1 quart
• 1 fifth (31⁄4 cups) 80-100 proof vodka • 4 cups cantaloupe chunks • 1 cup Simple Syrup (see below) • Finely grated zest of 2 lemons 1. Muddle the vodka, cantaloupe and lemon zest with a wooden spoon in a half-gallon jar. Stir to moisten everything. 2. Seal the jar and put it in a cool, dark cabinet until the liquid smells and tastes strongly of melon, four to seven days. 3. Strain the mixture with a mesh strainer into a clean jar. Do not push on the solids to extract more liquid.
Parking space for sale? It’s a bummer when you get home and can’t find a parking space. It’s particularly mind numbing in big cities where free parking is limited to the extreme and paid parking can be overpriced, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Hong Kong is one such city and so it comes as no surprise that the cost of a reserved space can set you back more dollars than you could possibly imagine. In fact, a parking spot in Hong Kong just sold for a
whopping, world record $1.3 million U.S. dollars [about 10 million Hong Kong bucks]. But if you can shell out $150 million dollars for a luxury apartment in the Ritzy Mount Nicholson residential development, what’s a mere million dollars more for reserved parking. The Association of Mature American Citizens [www.amac.us] provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50.
4. Stir in the Simple Syrup. 5. Seal and store in a cool, dark cabinet. Use within one year. Simple Syrup Makes 3 cups
• 2 1⁄4 cups water • 2 1⁄4 cups granulated cane sugar Mix the water and sugar in a small saucepan until the sugar is all moistened. Bring to a boil over medium-high heat. Stir to make sure the sugar is completely dissolved, then remove from the heat and let cool. Refrigerate for up to three months.
