ountry Night at Lit transforms into an exciting outdoor tribute show at the Rock Yard with this Keith Urban inspired performance featuring John Brodersen as Keith Urban. Few artists have captured the world’s heart and fan base like the New Zealand-born Australian-American singer, songwriter and record producer Keith Urban, and now fans are able to channel his high energy sound and on-stage electricity. Audience members find themselves doing a double-take when they see and hear Brodersen, a Wyoming native who spent several years working in studios with recording artists. In the early 1990s he fronted and toured with his own band, 21 Windows, which won Los Angeles’ Finest competition two years in a row. He opened his Longshadow Ranch Winery in

Tastes better than it sounds Who would have thought that a serving of Macaroni and Cheese could be so refreshing on a hot summer day? The Association of Mature Citizens [AMAC] reports that the Brooklyn-based Van Leeuwen Ice Cream Company churned up a batch of Mac and Cheese flavored ice cream and it did the trick and got an “over-
whelming response.” The folks at Van Leeuwen boasted of its success on social media saying they were sold out in quick time.

To that end he built the country’s first roller coaster in a bid to give folks some good, clean fun well away from sleazier pursuits.

• About a month after its dedication, the Statue of Liberty became a working lighthouse for 16 years. • Dunce caps used to be a sign of intelligence! Thirteenth-century philosopher John Duns Scotus believed that a pointed cap helped spread knowledge from the tip to the brain, and his followers proudly wore them as badges of honor. A few hundred years later, when his ideas became less popular, the meaning of the Duns cap was turned on its, er, head, becoming a joke that led to its less flattering association. A recent survey concluded that we seniors are ready to go back out into the world, to resume our former pre-COVID activities. I suspect the poll questions weren’t asked of seniors in my part of New England. We are not, for the most part, ready to get back to what we were doing before. We learned to talk to family and friends on internet conferences and managed the software quite well. We explored new hobbies with materials that arrived by mail since we weren’t going into stores. We mastered complicated recipes (with ingredients picked up curbside at the grocery), and we renewed our interest in chess and other games, playing online. We explored parts of our state we hadn’t seen before because we could safely

drive around — as long as we didn’t get out of the car. Our senior center is still holding the men’s Monday lunch in the parking lot, socially distanced, of course. The French language class still isn’t meeting because it didn’t work out well trying to hear and speak French while spaced out across the parking lot with cars going by. The art classes are still done remotely because it’s difficult to do watercolor painting outside with the breeze blowing, and no one is ready to go inside the building. A few fast phone calls revealed that, no, the American Legion hall still isn’t open. The auto dealership is trying to restrict potential buyers to test driving only three cars because each one has to be sanitized after customers take one out for a spin. The deli on Main Street is still taking orders only at the front window and doesn’t know when it will open for indoor eating. If a poll were done here, I suspect it would conclude that, no, we’re not ready to come out yet.

A new hotel in Shanghai, the J Hotel Shanghai Tower, promises a glamorous stay, but if you are acrophobic you may want to book elsewhere, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. It’s lobby is on the 101st floor of a skyscraper that reaches 2,073 feet in height. Oddly, the Shanghai Tower hotel might not be considered to be the tallest hotel in the
world. Technically, the Gevora Hotel in Dubai still holds that title although it is just 1,169 feet high because the entire building is used as a hotel while the J Hotel takes up only the top floors of the Shanghai Tower. ‘Our Giant Rock’ digital exhibit now open at Hi-Desert Nature Museum The Hi-Desert Nature Museum announces, “Our Giant Rock: A Touchstone in the Mojave,” a digital exhibit and archive, is now available for public viewing. This interactive touchscreen exhibit encourages visitors to discover and explore the nuances that make Giant Rock a unique and cherished Morongo Basin landmark. Giant Rock is most notoriously known for the ‘giant’ personalities who lived near and even under it. However, it has also served as an intermediary for certain stories and events. The exhibit provides a series of interpretive narratives explaining these nuances while incorporating some never-beforeseen images, documents, publications, and videos which help illustrate Giant Rock’s history.
“Our Giant Rock: A Touchstone in the Mojave,” was made possible with support from California Humanities, a non-profit partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Hi-Desert Nature Museum is operated by the Town of Yucca Valley and is located in the Yucca Valley Community Center Complex at 57090 Twentynine Palms Highway. Donations support the educational mission of the Museum. The Museum is open from Wednesday through Saturday, by appointment at 10 a.m. or 11 a.m. and for walk-in visits from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. For updates on programs, contact the Hi-Desert Nature Museum at 760-3697212, visit its website at hidesertnaturemuseum.org.

It’s not unusual these days to see reports of library books being returned years and even decades late, but a church library in Sheffield, England boasts the return of a book that has been overdue for some 300 years. The Association of Mature American Citizens says the book was returned recently with a note of apology. Rev. Canon Keith Farrow, vice dean at Sheffield Cathedral, confirms that the book in question is a 1704 edition of The Faith and Practice of a Church of England Man. It turns out that it was found among the possessions of a deceased woman residing in Wales who left a note that the book should be returned
to the church library upon her death. Farrow explains that back in the day when the Cathedral was just a church, it was well known for its lending library. He jokingly told reporters that “I’m trying to work out what the librarian’s fine would be – you never know, we might get a new roof or something with the fine! But I did promise the family I wouldn’t charge them the fine – they’ve returned the book and that’s wonderful.” The Association of Mature American Citizens [www.amac.us] provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50

An elevated sandwich for any occasion
They might not be the fanciest of foods, but when you eat a filling, protein-packed sandwich, you are usually left satisfied and full of energy. From ham and turkey to mayo and mustard, the possibilities are nearly endless when sandwiches are on the menu. With so many customizable options for bread, meats, toppings and more, it’s easy to create the perfect sandwich. For example, this Croissant Chicken Salad Sandwich is served on a fluffy, light, mouthwatering croissant and features a hearty mixture of chicken, bacon and veggies to give you that boost you have been craving. To make the sandwich, line six slices of bacon in a skillet. Cook until slightly crispy. Drain over a paper towel and crush into pieces. On a cutting board, cut cherry tomatoes in half and chop green onions. In a mixing bowl, combine chicken, mayonnaise, chopped green onions, pepper, bacon crumbles and halved cherry tomatoes. Cut croissants in half and scoop
a generous amount of chicken salad onto the bottom of the croissant. Top with sprouts and replace top croissant. The chicken is creamy, the bacon crumbles are crispy and the green onions give it crunch, making this sandwich perfect for nearly any occasion. Whether it’s a bridal shower, picnic at the park with family or just lunch on a weekend afternoon, it can give you the energy to go forward and finish your day strong. The VA’s Fourth Mission The Department of Veteran’s Affairs has been busy. It was recently announced that it has completed 150 Fourth Mission assignments across the country. Fourth Mission’s goal is to improve preparedness for response to war and national emergencies by developing plans and taking actions to support service to veterans as well as national efforts. In other words, when a need is there, so is help. (The first three VA Missions are health care, benefits and
national cemeteries.) If you ever doubted that the COVID pandemic has been a true emergency, you only need to look at the very long list of Fourth Mission humanitarian efforts to back up the nation’s health care system. Here are a few examples of what the VA’s Fourth Mission has accomplished in all 50 states plus territories: • Provided 935,000 pieces of Personal Protective Equipment. • Admitted 488 non-veteran citizens to VA medical centers for treatment. • Deployed over 5,000 medical personnel to 1,215 state VA homes, 980 community nursing homes and 94 non-VA hospitals. In Arizona alone, they provided staffing for six civilian hospitals. In Florida, they worked with over 8,000 long-term-care patients at 82 facilities. In Virginia, it was 852 long-term-care facilities.
There were untold thousands of COVID tests given and results processed. When the vaccines came out, VA personnel were there across the country to administer them. The efforts weren’t limited to hands-on medical staff. Truck drivers were sent to multiple states to deliver supplies and vaccines. Pharmacists were sent to numerous locations, including federal prisons. VA personnel fed 250 veteran families every month in Georgia, along with 150 homebound VA patients. They held town hall and state meetings with civilian authorities to coordinate how to contain the spread of COVID. I’m impressed by this massive effort. To the thousands of VA personnel who volunteered to go, thank you. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

The Creekstone, a chic new modern rustic hotel, opens in Idyllwild
The Creekstone lobby. Photo courtesy of The Creekstone.
The Creekstone, a fun and stylish modern twist on a historic mountain lodge, opened today in Idyllwild. Originally built in 1947, The Creekstone is a playful modern redesign of a vintage gem. Nestled in the serene wooded mountain landscape of Idyllwild, the fully renovated hotel features nine chic guest suites and a gorgeous great room that combines an original rustic fireplace with fabulous and eclectic furnishings. The hotel’s storybook-inspired architecture dates back to when the building was originally an Alpine-style market, but from the moment guests enter the building’s lively, social space, they will know that they have found the best of Idyllwild. Everything inside has been completely reconceptualized. The hotel’s management team, Elevation Property Management, Inc., partnered with H3K Home & Design of Palm Springs, who furnished each room with fresh, modern décor unlike any hotel in the area. With fusions of organic textures and statement pieces, it is a bold and impeccably designed boutique hotel bringing hipness to the mountain. The meticulously curated guest suites feature understated furnishings, including over-sized black and white plaid lounge chairs, a bed decked out in luxuriously soft linens, and some cheeky artwork. Most of the pristine rooms include unique custom electric fireplaces that can be programed to display in a variety of colors. The generously sized bathrooms feature modern
touches, including contemporary subway tiles, oversized sinks, rustic furnishings, and include custom organic bath amenities. “Just two hours from Los Angeles, the Creekstone is a perfect getaway (romantic or otherwise!) for creative types, brimming with swanky style and carefree comfort,” said hotelier Amy Brinkman. “With galleries, boutiques, and some great restaurants, Idyllwild now has a hotel that measures up! In this era of VRBO, hoteliers need to provide much more than a place to lay one’s head. We hope the depth of our passion for the place comes through and we’re thrilled with how it’s evolved. We’ve set a new standard for Idyllwild lodging.” Brinkman envisions an “affluent, artistic, creative” clientele. “We created this space to be a warm and inviting modern mountain retreat that blends comfort with style. Our cozy haven can be your vibrant yet chill escape in the majestic mountains of Idyllwild.” The great room’s furnishings are an eclectic mix of leather lounging couches and sharp black & white gingham chairs, coupled with burl wood end tables. Sometime after opening The Creekstone will begin hosting live music, pouring cocktails, and open a high-end steakhouse called The Red Door. Meanwhile, patrons will have no shortage of quality food options in the vicinity. The Creekstone is located at 54950 Pine Crest Avenue, in Idyllwild. For more information go to creekstoneinn.com
