The recreation center is open again! While they tried to do a “soft opening,” word traveled quickly. Going to the rec center won’t be as it was before, of course. There used to be classes in the middle of the gym, which is surrounded by a long indoor track. Scattered around the interior were basketball hoops and exercise mats. Now, we’re told, we’ll check in at the front door for a specified timeslot (one hour) on the track. At the end of our time period, the center will be emptied and the next group let in. There will be no classes, no use of mats, no basketball ... but we’ll have indoor walking. This is the best news we’ve had around here in a very long time. Indoor walking, while not ur-

gently needed right now, will be most welcome when cold weather arrives. Icy sidewalks send many of us to the rec center, which was closed last year, to walk in winter. But, we’re told, we won’t be able to buddy up and walk with a friend, chatting as we do laps. We’ll walk alone in the right lane, passing in the left lane if we should overtake the person in front of us. No, we won’t be able to use the mats for pre-walk stretching (they’re stacked in the storeroom), and no, the guys won’t be able to play basketball (the balls also are in the storeroom). So, why, if there are so many restrictions about using the rec center, are we happy? We’re happy because it’s one small sign that maybe, just maybe, things are inching back to normal. How will we know for sure? We’ll know, said one wit, if we walk into the rec center and the basketballs are on their racks at the center of the courts. That’s going to be our barometer: basketballs. A story you can milk Bernie was on his way home from the fair near Marshfield, WI recently and felt a bit peckish. So, he stopped off at a McDonald’s for a burger on his way home. After all, you can work up quite an appetite shopping for livestock, says the Association of Mature American Citizens, especially if you have to pack the three calves you just purchased in the backseat of your sedan. Another patron in the drive-through line, Jessica Nelson, spotted what she thought was a decal of a cow’s face staring at her from the rear

window of Bernie’s car and quickly realized that it was the real thing when she saw it “moo-ving.” She quickly reached for her cell phone and captured a video of the notso-little critter. She found out later that two of the calves were lying down while the third calf was pressing its face against the window doing a little sightseeing. The Association of Mature American Citizens [www.amac.us] provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50.

Another way to say thanks The struggling employees of an eatery in Gainesville, FL that was hard hit by the coronavirus epidemic got a lift recently when a patron paid his $144.66 dinner tab, adding a $10,000 tip, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. When the unnamed philanthropist, his wife and son finished their meals he asked the owner of the Wahoo Seafood Grill if he would gather his staff so he could have a word with them. The diner thanked the restaurant’s ten employees, informing them of the big tip each of them had earned -- $1,000

each. Shawn Shepherd, who owns the Wahoo Grill, took to Instagram to express his thanks, writing: “I’m not usually an emotional guy, but this really got me. I’m blown away. We’re ALL blown away by his generosity. The last year and a half hasn’t been easy on this industry. We’re hurting and we’re exhausted, but this incredible act of kindness has restored our faith in humanity.” The Association of Mature American Citizens [www.amac.us] provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50.

Fontina and Pepper Pizza

When cooked on the grill, homemade pizza becomes a gourmet affair. Add roasted peppers and fresh herbs to the mix, and you’ve got dinner suitable for company. • 1 pound fresh pizza dough • 6 ounces Italian Fontina or Provolone cheese, shredded • 2 jarred roasted red and/or yellow peppers, thinly sliced • 1 tablespoon chopped fresh marjoram or thyme leaves 1. Prepare outdoor grill for covered, direct grilling on medium-low. 2. Cut dough into 4 equal pieces. On one end of oiled cookie sheet, with fingertips, spread and flatten 1 piece of dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. (Edge does not need to

5

// September 2, 2021 be even.) On same cookie sheet, repeat with another piece of dough. Repeat with a second oiled cookie sheet and remaining dough. 3. Place all 4 pieces of dough, oiled side down, on hot grill grate. Cook 2 to 3 minutes or until grill marks appear on underside (dough will stiffen and puff). 4. With tongs, turn crusts over. Working quickly, arrange onefourth of Fontina and one-fourth of peppers on each crust. Cover grill and cook pizzas 3 to 4 minutes longer or until undersides are evenly browned and cooked through. 5. Transfer to cutting board; sprinkle with marjoram. Cut into wedges. Serves 4. Tip: Look for fresh pizza dough in the dairy section of your supermarket, usually sold near the tortillas. (Frozen pizza dough also is available, but it takes several hours to thaw before it can be used.) Or you can purchase dough from a local pizzeria; they’ll usually sell it to you in 1 pound balls if you ask. Palm Springs Airport sets another passenger record Palm Springs International Airport (PSP) continues its pandemic rebound by setting another passenger record. On the heels of even more route announcements, PSP broke another passenger record. Total Passenger Counts for July reached 129,463, or a 32% increase over the previous record set in July 2019 when 97,834 total passengers utilized the airport. PSP started its return to pre-pandemic levels in May and has exceeded pre-pandemic numbers throughout the summer. July 2021 passenger numbers are up 283%

compared to July 2020, however, 2021 year-to-date passenger numbers are still lagging 2019 by 37%. “This summer has been one of the busiest we’ve ever had at the airport, and we expect this rebound to continue with more available flights and ten new routes starting this fall,” said Palm Springs Mayor Christy Holstege. “With the completion of the ticket lobby renovations and the installation of a new baggage system, we are improving the airport user experience and accommodating future demand.”

Guardians Stole From Helpless Veterans Most of the time, a scammer of veterans will be given a prison sentence that is less than satisfactory to those of us who are following the story. A few years here or there, a monetary fine...it’s not enough. But now and then, a sentence will come along that just feels right. This happened in a recent fraud case against a group of four criminals. One of the males received a sentence of 15 years. His stepson got almost six years. One

of the female criminals got 20 years. But the last one, another woman, received a sentence of 47 years for her part in the crimes. The group, calling itself a nonprofit corporation, acted as guardians, conservators and financial managers to those with special needs, including veterans. The 33-count indictment included money laundering, mail fraud, conspiracy and aggravated identity theft. The criminals would either use a company credit card to make their purchases, knowing the company would pay it back out of client money, or write checks to themselves out of the account. Among the take were RVs, vacations, cars, cruises and more, to the tune of $11 million in client money...clients who suffered when they didn’t have enough

money for expenses, care and food, and were sometimes left homeless. What’s galling is that it could have been stopped as far back as 2012. The company’s tax accountant raised flags with their attorney, saying one of the women was using the client funds as her own personal ATM. But instead of going to the authorities, the accountant let himself be silenced by a threatening confidentiality agreement and a check for payment in full for his services. Despite the short sentences the two men received, there is one thing that does make me smile. The head criminal, the woman who received a sentence of 47 years plus three years supervised release, is 74 years old. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Purple Room reopens with a full schedule of entertainment The Purple Room will reopen with its usual format: Jazz and Blues focus on Tuesdays with Rose Mallett. Wednesdays swing with Michael Holmes and Darci Daniels and their music of the Rat Pack era. Jazz, Broadway and ‘60s pop takes the stage Thursdays with Sharon Sills. For Labor Day Weekend — Friday, Saturday and Sunday, September 3, 4 & 5, the great live jazz combo led by Mark Kahny will feature some of the area’s favorite singers. Also, for the first weekend, open dining — with reservations suggested although not required — will be instituted, the same as the Purple Room’s weekday format. The Purple Room will require proof of vaccination for all guests and employees. Additionally, masks will also be required to enter and move about the club but may be removed at table while eating and drinking. During September, there will be a lot of both in celebration of the beloved nightspot coming back to life. Things start, appropriately enough, with an act fit for a King: the King himself. “I gotta’ tell you, I’m all shook up about playing the iconic Purple Room,” says Scot Bruce whose

critically acclaimed Elvis: The Early Years plays Friday, September 10 with additional performances scheduled in October. “I’ve ‘done’ Elvis all around the world, been in music videos with Faith Hill and Sheryl Crow, worked in Disneyland, appeared on Days of our Lives and been praised by CNN, but giggin’ for Michael Holmes’ is a real delight.” On Saturday, September 11, things get jumpin’ with Palm Springs JUMP!: the musical revue homage to such legendary Palm Springs regulars as Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Lucile Ball, Keely Smith, Sonny Bono and more. Created by and featuring Michael Holmes, Charles Herrera and Darci Daniels, the evening features the musical flair of Palm Springs celebrated pianist, Joel Baker. Palm Springs JUMP! is an evening of high-energy entertainment and a hats-off salute to the Hollywood glamour for which the Desert is famed. The full schedule and ticket ordering information for the 2021 Purple Room season can be found online at www.purpleroompalmsprings.com with a link to Brown Paper Tickets.
