T
o commemorate the 20th Anniversary of 9-11, Palm Canyon Theatre (PCT) will present The Guys, a play by Anne Nelson about the aftereffects of the collapse of the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The show will run at PCT on September 11 and 12, 2021. PCT’s production of The Guys will star Judith Chapman, who will reprise the role of Joan, an editor, and Michael Pacas, who will portray Nick, a New York Fire Department captain. After losing eight of his men in the collapse of the World Trade Center, Nick enlists help from Joan to prepare their eulogies. Hearing details of each of their lives, Joan helps Nick compile the difficult, heartfelt speeches that honor “ordinary, great guys in an extraordinary situation,” while he navigates his own emotional response. Growing up the daughter of a retired Air Force General, Chapman understands and deeply respects the sacrifices of our country’s military and first responders. Chapman has performed on stage and screen since she was 14. She currently plays Gloria Bardwell, an ever-scheming mother, on “The Young and the Restless.” Pacas has appeared in countless valley productions

Have you ever listened to a podcast? A podcast is a digital audio or video file that you can access from the internet. They’re often in a series that you can tune into one at a time, almost like radio on demand. They’re usually associated with a website where you can find out what’s available and a schedule for new ones. You can listen or watch on your computer, phone or tablet, but you’ll need an app (application) if you want to download and take it with you, unless your phone has one pre-installed. One way to find entertaining podcasts is to plug one of your areas of interest into a web browser and add “podcast” to see what comes up. Or as a place to start, look at AARP’s website (www.

aarp.org/podcasts) and see what it offers. Right now, there are podcasts about various scams, protecting your finances and high prescription-drug prices, all worth a listen. Scroll to the bottom of the page for instructions. If you search the internet for podcasts, you’ll find vintage radio programs, celebrities, financial information, stories from history, news, brain stretchers, sports themes, stress reduction and so much more. There must be hundreds of thousands of podcasts out there to choose from. Try a search for “podcasts for seniors” to see what surprises pop up. Another way to keep your brain stretched is with online classes, called MOOCs, which stands for massive open online courses. There are thousands you can audit for free, attending remotely without ever leaving home. You don’t receive credit for audited classes. Coursera (www.coursera.org) is your go-to source for online learning. (At this writing, it lists 1,782 free courses from 200 universities.) Indio’s sustainability event to include tribute to fallen U.S. Marine Hunter Lopez A memorial tribute to fallen U.S. Marine Cpl. Hunter Lopez will now be included in the City of Indio’s previously scheduled Sustainability event for September 11. Those who come through the event at the Indio Corporate Yard/Indio Water Authority from 9 a.m. to noon will receive a small shade tree to plant in their yards or neighborhoods in honor of Lopez, who lived with his family in Indio. Cpl. Lopez and 12 others, including Marines, a Navy sailor and an Army soldier, were killed in an attack in Kabul, Afghanistan on Aug. 26, 2021. “Planting these trees will eventually provide shade, a beautiful canopy around our City, and a generational legacy in Hunter’s honor,” said Indio Mayor Elaine Holmes. “In addition, it’s a small way we can recognize the significance of the 20 year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks and the many sacrifices made by our troops since that time.” A total of 300 acacia salicina, acacia shoestring and palo breas will be available to the public at Saturday’s sustainability collection event, courtesy of the City of Indio and Sun City Nursery. “We are proud to do what we can to help support not only the Lopez family, but all those who were injured or who lost their lives for our country,” said Pedro Macias, owner of Sun City Nursery. The City of Indio’s fall sustainability events will take place on September 11 and November 6, from 9 a.m. to noon at 83101 Av-
enue 45. During these events the city will collect: • Waste tires - All tires must be off the rim. No tires from commercial facilities will be accepted. • Used oil and oil filters from residents. This service is provided for do-it-yourselfers. Oil and filters from commercial facilities will not be accepted. • Electronic waste (televisions, computers, computer monitors, cables & wires) On-site paper shredding service will be provided free of charge for Indio residents, with a limit of four boxes. A compost exchange will also be held. Those who bring food waste in a container that can be emptied and returned, will receive a free 3-gallon reusable bucket of organic compost and a planting guide. The food waste will be processed into new compost. For additional information about the City of Indio’s Sustainability, Recycling and Beautification efforts go to www.indio.org/sustainability.

Veterans Village Making Progress The first customer to purchase one of the tiny homes was a town police officer who’d been sent to investigate a complaint about the parking lot being full of construction materials. “I own the lot,” said Sarge. The officer nodded. “Then do what you want.” He stepped over to the first tiny home and peeked in. Within a half hour, the officer had chosen his flooring and exterior cladding, signed a purchase agreement and
put down a cash deposit, the $17 he had in his pocket. David, the homeless veteran foreman of the Veterans Village project, stood gripping the $17 after the officer left. “I’ve just sold my first tiny home,” he said to Sarge, amazed and stunned. “He’ll be back tomorrow with a cashier’s check for the whole thing.” Sarge patted him on the shoulder and headed into the coffee shop, where he pulled out his phone and punched in some numbers. By 10 o’clock the next morning, the second tiny home was also sold, full of custom extras. By noon, David was at the counter in the coffee shop, Sarge at his elbow, while he tapped frantically at a calculator and consulted a notebook of costs. “Can this be right? Is this possibly be right?”
Sarge checked the math, tapping the calculator: sales prices minus cost of materials, minus carpenter wages, minus, minus, minus, until he hit grand total. “That’s right.” David slumped onto a stool. “Sell two more tiny homes and I’ll be able to put something down on that land,” he said, “before it’s gone.” Sarge ran a hand down his jaw, considering the secret he’d been keeping. Then he pulled a muchfolded savings bank statement from his back pocket and handed it to David. “This is from the old vets here,” Sarge said, “plus their families, plus many others, plus a state grant, to help you get Veterans Village started. For you to buy the land and pay cash. You’ll own it outright.” (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Honor America on Patriot Day September 11, 2001, was a tragic day in American history. On that day, nearly 3,000 innocent lives were lost due to the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C. as well as in rural Pennsylvania, where another plane en route for more destruction crash-landed. The indelible images of the World Trade Center collapsing in flames with crowds running for safety, as well as the ensuing visions of heroes and citizens working together, have created a lasting impression. While buildings have been repaired and new sites erected in the wake of the attacks, there are many ways to continue to honor the fallen. Patriot Day, which takes place each year on September 11 to honor those who lost their lives in the 9-11 attacks, is one such example. The following are a handful of ways that people can honor 9-11 victims and their families.
• If you display a flag at your home or business, be sure to place it at half staff from sunrise to sunset to mourn the lives lost. • Share stories of the heroism and bravery of first responders with young children who may not have been alive in 2001.
• Celebrate local heroes by visiting or making donations of food or supplies to local firehouses and police stations.
• Unite the country by promoting acceptance of and kindness to all people, regardless of religious or political beliefs.
• Commemorate the events of 9-11 by observing moments of silence at key times throughout the day: 8:46 a.m, 9:03 a.m., 9:37 a.m., 9:59 a.m., 10:03 a.m., and 10:28 a.m.
• Attend a special service commemorating 9-11 at houses of worship.
• Engage in service projects that can help your community, including its underserved individuals, like veterans. National Day of Service, which is the same day as
• Visit memorials honoring the fallen in various communities in and around your home. This Patriot Day, there are many ways individuals can honor those who lost their lives on 9-11.
