Depending on when we went for the COVID vaccine, we could be eligible for the booster now ... or not. Elderly seniors, as well as those in nursing homes and the immunocompromised, were first in line early in the year. The rest of us straggled in over the next several months. At this point, it’s unknown whether there should be a six- or eightmonth wait before the booster. The Pfizer booster (called Comirnaty) is now available to those 65 and older and some others depending on risk and medical conditions. At this writing, Moderna is asking for authorization, and there is no booster yet for the J&J vaccine. Do we actually need a booster? We’re all wondering (my pharmacist says half of their calls are

about boosters), and the answers are a mixed bag. A pulmonary physician at a major university hospital said if we’re under 65 and relatively healthy, no, we don’t need one. The U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says that the vaccines we already received will start to wear off, so yes, we should get the booster, starting with seniors and nursing-home residents. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention is calling for booster shots only for the immunocompromised, but not others. The World Health Organization is calling for a moratorium on shots until poor countries get theirs. While we wait for real answers, keep your vaccine record card where you can find it. You’ll need it, should you decide to get a booster. What am I going to do? I’m going to stall. I’m going to wait to see how the booster plays out. With the highly contagious Delta variant being such a menace right now, I’d like to see if perhaps that’s going to be added to the booster vaccine. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Finders keepers The vacation Mr. and Mrs. Noreen Wredberg and her husband took in Arkansas paid for itself -- big time, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. While there, the California tourists made it a point to visit Crater of Diamonds State Park. “I first saw the park featured on a TV show several years ago. When I realized we weren’t too far away, I knew we had to come,” Mrs. Wredberg told reporters after finding the biggest diamond
found in the park this year. She and her husband had been strolling through the park for less than an hour when she spotted the gem sparkling in the sunlight -- a 4.38 carat yellow diamond, worth about $15,330 or more. The park has a “finders keepers” policy for visitors who find diamonds. Friday Nights at Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest’s Friday nights are an intimate indoors event with all the same great Oktoberfest fixings, including real German beer, authentic German cuisine, log-sawing contests, and lively bands playing polkas, classic rock, and of course the chicken dance! This year’s event has limited capacity, and most Saturdays are anticipated to sell out, which is another reason why Friday nights were a natural fit at this year’s Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest. Fridays provide an option to attend this year’s festival with better opportunity to get tickets because of the limited capacity situation. Whether it’s Friday, Saturday or Sunday one thing for certain is this particular Oktoberfest is more special than others, considering Big Bear’s environment naturally reflects the scenery and heritage of the Bavarian Alps of Germany. It is also the highest altitude Oktoberfest in the U.S. at 6,750’. Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest takes pride in serving the very same beer poured at Munich’s Oktoberfest! There are two bars that service the inside of the Convention Center and multiple beer gardens on the outside. The food is authentic to German tradition, too. The brat-
wurst is from a German butcher in Glendale, and fresh apple strudel and pretzels are delivered weekly from a German bakery in Costa Mesa. Plus, there are fun competitions and contests at Oktoberfest including log sawing and stein holding. The 2021 Big Bear Lake Oktoberfest is every weekend through November 7. The weekend festivities take place at Big Bear Lake Convention Center, located at 42900 Big Bear Blvd. Event times are Fridays (October only) 4 to 11 p.m., Saturdays 1 to 11 p.m.; Sundays noon to 6 p.m. Guests are strongly encouraged to pre-purchase tickets. Saturdays in October have set arrival entry time blocks to ensure everyone with a pre-purchased tickets get a speedy entrance into the event. Tickets are on a first come, first served basis. Why do we say ‘trick or treat’?
Homeowners think nothing of having goblins, nurses, vampires, or astronauts showing up at their doors each October asking for candy. Any other time of the year and these visitors might be turned away. But Halloween is all about the magical and the macabre, and trick-or-treating is a major component of the festivities. Kids and adults alike cry out “trick or treat” at each house they visit. Many utter this familiar phrase without a second thought and may have no idea how this familiar custom came to be. During the Middle Ages, less fortunate individuals would go “souling,” which was a process of going door-to-door asking for food on November 1 in return for saying prayers for the deceased on All Souls Day on November 2. Many centuries later, the tradition of “guising” began in Scotland around the same time of year. People began wearing masks and costumes to disguise themselves and prevent evil spirits from harming them. Spirits were thought to cross over more readily around Halloween. The custom also was called “mumming” and was celebrated in nearby England and Ireland as well. Costumes were eventually accompanied by hijinks. Mischief
makers would sing a rhyme, do a card trick or tell a story in exchange for a treat. If that treat wasn’t presented, a “trick” could be played. For 19th century children, tricks included jamming hot cabbage into a keyhole to stink up a house or frightening passersby. History.com indicates that when European immigrants arrived in America, they didn’t give up their annual mischief or requests for treats, and the custom spread throughout the early 20th century in the United States. While the practice of begging for treats in some shape or form went by many names, MerriamWebster reports that a newspaper in Saskatchewan, Canada first mentioned the words “treat” and “trick” together in print. A 1923 article indicated, “Hallowe’en passed off very quietly here. ‘Treats’ not ‘tricks’ were the order of the evening.” By 1927, more and more children were uttering “tricks or treats” to solicit candy from their neighbors. Trick-or-treating gained steam throughout the 1950s, with endorsements by major candy companies. The custom also was showcased in popular comic strips. Even though there are tricks to be made on Halloween, treats are the real draw of the day.

The first single from the album, “Let Me Be the One,” with guest singer Sara Beck, was also presented as a music video. Costner may be an accomplished actor, but he demonstrates that he’s also well worth listening to. How to roast pumpkin seeds Pumpkin Seeds 1. Seed the pumpkin: Preheat the oven to 300 degrees F. Using a spoon, scrape the pulp and seeds out of your pumpkin into a bowl.
Carving jack-o’-lanterns is a Halloween tradition that both adults and children enjoy. It’s hard to resist an opportunity to carve a funny or scary face into a pumpkin that will soon make its way to the front porch, but there’s another irresistible element to carving pumpkins as well. Roasted pumpkin seeds make for a tasty, tempting treat. Seeds must be removed before carving pumpkins, so turning them into a savory snack is a great way to make use of them and cook up some fuel for family carving sessions. Roasting pumpkin seeds is a straightforward process, though some people may have their own techniques to make seeds more flavorful. The following recipe for “Pumpkin Seeds” from the Food Network reflects various ways to prepare this beloved snack, ensuring that people with varying tastes can no doubt find a way to incorporate their favorite flavors into this Halloween staple.
2. Clean the seeds: Separate the seeds from the stringy pulp, rinse the seeds in a colander under cold water, then shake dry. Don’t blot with paper towels; the seeds will stick. 3. Dry them: Spread the seeds in a single layer on an oiled baking sheet and roast 30 minutes to dry them out. 4. Add spices: Toss the seeds with olive oil, salt and your choice of spices (see below). Return to the oven and bake until crisp and golden, about 20 more minutes. 5. Sweet Toss with cinnamon and sugar (do not use salt in step 4). 6. Indian Toss with garam masala; mix with currants after roasting. 7. Spanish Toss with smoked paprika; mix with slivered almonds after roasting. 8. Italian Toss with grated parmesan and dried oregano. 9. Barbecue Toss with brown sugar, chipotle chile powder and ground cumin.

The Kaiser thought the story was funny; the German army did not. On October 18, 1867, the U.S. formally takes possession of Alaska after purchasing the territory from Russia for $7.2 million, or less than 2 cents an acre. Russia sold its Alaska territory to the U.S. rather than risk losing it in battle with a rival such as Great Britain.

Punishment Doesn’t Fit the Crime One year ago, a federal grand jury indicted a Virginia woman for a whole raft of scams and fraud against veterans. Most disheartening is the fact that she was a former veteran. There was a long laundry list (nine counts) of things she did. She had veterans apply for HISA grants (Home Improvements and Structural Alterations), which are for doing work on their homes and making improvements. Not
only did she not complete the work, she pocketed the money. Then she managed to have the income and retirement benefits of a veteran diverted into her own account. She took out loans in the elderly veteran’s name, with the money going into her pocket, and used the veteran’s credit and debit cards. But she didn’t stop there. In another scheme, she linked veterans with landlords, but kept the money they paid for security deposits and rent. The legal names for these are wire fraud and aggravated identity theft and involved 27 victims. While a Department of Justice press release stated that “elder abuse and financial fraud targeted at seniors is a key priority,” nowhere in the sentencing does it call out the specific punishment for that. They carefully listed the
types of elder abuse (physical abuse, financial fraud, scams and exploitation, caregiver neglect and abandonment, psychological abuse and sexual abuse), but don’t seem to have made it specifically part of this case. At the time of the indictment, this miserable excuse for a human faced a possible 20 years in prison, plus two years after pleading guilty to one count of wire fraud and one count of aggravated identity theft. In the recent sentencing, she got a mere 9.5 years. Why is that? Why do the powers-that-be think it’s OK to give much shorter prison sentences to these people? Where is the deterrent in talking about the “serious nature of these fraud schemes” when you don’t follow it up with serious jail time? (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.
