alm Springs International Airport (PSP) is celebrating the arrival of Southwest Airlines by giving away two roundtrip tickets on the wildly popular carrier as part of its new “Choose Your Adventure” promotion, which kicks off today — and runs through November 20.

Soon, Coachella Valley travelers will no longer need to drive to Ontario or Los Angeles to catch a flight on Southwest. Starting Nov. 15, 2020, Southwest will be landing locally at Palm Springs International Airport with flights to Denver, Oakland, and Phoenix.

The news is out. Our Social Security benefit increase starting in January 2021 will be less than it was for 2020.

Instead of the 1.6% increase we received this year, they’re cutting us back to 1.3% for Social Security benefits and Supplemental Security Income. For the average recipient, this comes to a whopping $20 per month. The average benefit will be $1,543 per month and $2,596 for a couple.

The retirement earnings test exempt amount will change in 2021 as well. If you’re not yet at full retirement age, the annual exempt amount will be $18,960 per year.

During the first year you reach full retirement age, the limit will be $50,520 per year (before the month you reach that age).

The way this is supposed to work is that when the annual inflation rate goes down, our cost of living adjustment also goes down.

We allegedly don’t need as much money to get through the month.

(Although the cost of our groceries has gone up, the price of gas has gone down because no one is going anywhere now.) The Senior Citizens League guesstimated correctly a few months ago that our increase would be 1.3% — the second lowest increase ever.

Meanwhile our Medicare Part B premium continues to climb.

The good news there is the “hold harmless” clause in the regulations. If the Medicare premium rises enough that it overtakes our Social Security increase, the dollar amount of the Part B premium will be reduced so we don’t end up with fewer Social Security dollars than we received this year. This applies to most but not all of us.

Does COVID Restrict Travel With Pets?

Dear Paw’s Corner: I’m driving from New York to Colorado for a long-term contract job, and my two dogs will be coming with me.

My roommate in New York is flying with my cat about a week later, because I don’t think my cat will do well on a long car trip (and I’m worried about her escaping). Are there any restrictions on pets traveling by plane or staying in hotels at this time? — Beth G., Brooklyn Dear Beth: It sounds like you’re doing your planning well in advance, and that’s great.

Your dogs should be secured in the car while you’re traveling.

Depending on their size and the type of car, they can be placed in a large kennel cage in the cargo area (with comfy beds, chew toys and access to water). Or they can stretch out on the back seat — use a restraint device designed to keep dogs from sliding around the car or escaping from the vehicle.

Many hotels are pet-friendly and have modified their cleaning procedures so that the hotel rooms will be clean and ready for the next guest.

And more good news: Your friend and your cat can probably travel together in the airline cabin, as long as your cat is in a carrier (hard or soft sided) that will fit underneath the seat in front of your friend. (Some airlines are no longer shipping pets in the cargo area due to the disrupted flight schedules.)

Book the airline seat with a pet option as soon as possible. Airlines allow a limited number of pets to travel in the cabin, even in a carrier. Those slots may fill up fast.

How green is your my dog?

Trees are green, grass is green and so is Cristian Mallocci’s newborn puppy. And, that’s why he named the pup Pistachio, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. Mallocci is a farmer on the Italian island of Sardinia and his dog recently gave birth to a litter of five puppies all of which, except Pistachio, were born with white fur. There have been other reports of green dogs being born and the vets will tell you that it is not a threatening condition; it can

happen when green bile pigment in the mother’s placenta combines with her amniotic fluid. The coloration is not permanent. It fades away in time and it does not impair the puppy in any way. In fact, Mallocci plans to give away Pistachio’s four siblings and train Pistachio to tend to his sheep.

Palm Springs Dog Park to close for annual maintenance and overseeding The Palm Springs Dog Park behind City Hall will close beginning Thursday, November 12 for annual overseeding and maintenance – and will re-open again to the public on Sunday, December 20, 2020.

The Joslyn Center is thrilled to host a special drive-through birthday celebration for beloved Joslyn member John Curran, a World War II veteran, who will be turning 105-years-old on Veterans Day. Organized by his nephew JD Lewis of Palm Desert, the surprise parade will be held in the center’s parking lot at 73750 Catalina Way in Palm Desert on Wednesday, November 11, from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. The parade will include a presentation from Congressman Raul Ruiz’s office, participation from the Rancho Mirage and Palms to Pines Rotary Clubs and VFW Post 3699 in Indio as well as an appearance from the Palm Springs Air Museum.

The event is free and open to the public. All in the community are invited to participate.

Attendees are encouraged to decorate their cars and bring a card

for Mr. Curran, who is affectionately known as “Uncle John” to his family and friends. Upon arriving at the Catalina Way entrance, cars will proceed slowly through the parking lot to the front of the building where Mr. Curran will be seated. Joslyn staff members will collect cards from well-wishers.

Masks are mandatory and guests are required to stay in their cars and move efficiently yet cautiously through the parking lot.

Born November 11, 1915 in Honesdale, Pennsylvania, Mr. Curran moved to the Coachella Valley in 2005. A former housepainter, he served as a master sergeant in the US Army’s Judge Advocate General Corps. from 1942-1946.

She was determined to vote Karen Briceno Gonzalez works at the office of the Orange County [Florida] supervisor of elections and was taken by surprise when a man walked in and excitedly showed her his wife’s driver’s license. He said his pregnant wife was in labor in his car and that she was refusing to go to the hospital until she voted. Ms. Gonzalez grabbed a vote by mail ballot and took it to the pregnant woman but the woman insisted that she wanted to cast her ballot “right now.”

So, she watched as the woman

“filled out her ballot while doing a little controlled breathing” and then the husband drove her off to the hospital. “I understand the importance of this election to some people. I gave her an ‘I Voted’ sticker, and she was on her way to the hospital. She was very happy that she got to vote,” Ms. Gonzalez told WESH-TV. Starting Jan. 1, 2020, The Blue Water Navy Vietnam Veterans Act of 2019 (PL 116-23) extends coverage to those who weren’t inland but were shipboard. The difficulty has been gathering all the records and logs required to prove your location.

Now the National Archives and

Records Administration has digitized declassified Navy and Coast Guard deck logs (aka ship or captain’s logs) from 1956-1978 and put them online to make it easier for veterans to validate their claims.

This includes the hospital ship USS Sanctuary. Some particulars: • If you were within 12 nautical miles of the coast of Vietnam from Jan. 9, 1962 to May 7, 1975, or in the Korean Demilitarized Zone between Jan. 1, 1967 and Aug. 31, 1971, you qualify.
