ervice members make numerous sacrifices in defense of their countries. While the debts to service members may never be the kind that can be repaid in full, paying tribute to veterans, on Veteran’s Day and throughout the year, can be a great way to show them just how much their efforts are appreciated. Veteran’s Day begins with Armistice Day Veteran’s Day is a byproduct of the end of World War I, when Germany and the Allied Nations signed the Treaty of Versailles, formally ceasing fighting and establishing terms of peace. On November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the signing of the treaty, the first Armistice Day events were held. Armistice Day was initially a legal holiday to honor the end of World War I only, states History.com. The United States Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday starting in 1938. However, in 1954, after the country had been embroiled in both World War II and the Korean War, Congress amended the Act of 1938 by renaming the commemoration “Veteran’s Day” to honor veterans of all wars.
• McDonald’s is the world’s largest toy distributor. • The ice cream bean is a fruit with a taste very similar to its namesake vanilla ice cream. The tree that the bean grows on is native to the Americas and can reach nearly 100 feet tall, with bean pods up to 6 feet long.
Veteran’s Day in October? According to Military.com, for a short time, thanks to the Uniform Holiday Bill, which in 1968 established three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating national holidays on Mondays, Veteran’s Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October — the first being October 25, 1971. However, many people did not agree with this decision, continuing to honor the holiday on the original date. In 1975, President Gerald Ford signed a new law that returned Veteran’s Day to November 11 beginning in 1978. Since then, parades, memorial events, volunteer efforts, and other celebrations revolving around veterans have been held on November 11.
Veterans around the world Many countries, including the United States, celebrate veterans on or near November 11. America’s closest neighbor to the north, Canada, commemorates veterans on Remembrance Day (also November 11), as does the United Kingdom. Britain also has Remembrance Sunday, which is the second Sunday of November. Remembrance Day also is called Poppy Day, when people of the Commonwealth member states wear a red poppy flower in honor of military members who have died in the line of duty. Paying tribute There are various ways to honor veterans on Veteran’s Day and Remembrance Day. Federal government closings, educational efforts in schools, parades, and visits to military hospitals or cemeteries may take place. In Europe, it is common to observe two minutes of silence at 11 a.m. every November 11. Veteran’s Day and its sister holidays mark the honoring of veterans of all wars, with a particular focus on living veterans. It is a day to celebrate the dedication and selflessness of hardworking military men and women.

The news is in. Our Social Security benefit for 2022 will increase by 5.9%, slightly less than the 6.1% estimate the government put out this summer. Still, that’s much greater than the 1.3% increase we saw for 2021 and the 1.6% the year before. The average monthly dollar increase will be $92, making the average benefit $1,657 per month for a single person. For a couple, a $154 increase would come to $2,753 per month. The official mail on the cost-ofliving adjustment will come out in December. I’ve done my calculations for next year, and once again I shake my head. We’ve been notified already that I’ll have a rent increase. Heating fuel is likely to go up 47%. We all know what has happened at the grocery store. Medicare Part B is sure to go up, maybe a $10 per month increase. There is one worrying note, and we need to think about how it will play out for us individually.
The question is: Will that increase move us into a higher tax bracket? It depends on our provisional income. That number is any income (pension, wages, dividends and more) not from Social Security, plus half the amount of Social Security. Those of us who come in under $25,000 won’t have a federal tax put on our Social Security. If that number is between $25,000 and $34,000, there will be a tax on half of our Social Security income. Over that and it goes up to a tax on 85% of our Social Security income. If your situation for 2022 is likely to put you in the category of having to pay taxes on your Social Security benefit, you can elect to have them take money out of your check each month. If you want to learn about that, call the IRS at 1-800-772-1213 and ask for IRS Form W-4V. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

The parade kicks off at 3:30 p.m. on Palm Canyon Drive at Ramon Road and heads north concluding at Alejo Road. This year’s theme is “Honoring All Who Served” in our Armed Forces. For the first time ever, the parade will be broadcast live on NBC Palm Springs. Immediately following the event, the Palm Springs High School Spirit of the Sands Band will perform a
post-parade patriotic concert on the corner of Palm Canyon Drive and Amado Road. The concert concludes with a fireworks finale. Celebrate the grand opening of the Living Desert’s Rhino Savanna The Living Desert Zoo and Gardens will officially open its new four-acre Rhino Savanna with a ribbon cutting ceremony this Friday, November 12, at 10 a.m. Located just inside the Zoo’s main entrance, the sprawling multi-species and state-of-theart habitat is home to 12 African species. Among those include the Zoo’s largest animals, two black rhinos, Nia (pronounced Ny-a) and Jaali (pronounced Jolly). Expansive look-out points and picturesque views await guests at Rhino Savanna where they also will encounter waterbuck, springbok, two species of pelicans and a variety of other birds, plus fascinating subterranean animals such as the naked mole-rat, among others. Thoughtful design, inspiring encounters, a deep commitment to conservation, and excellence in animal care are the cornerstones of this new $17 million expansion. Upon entering Rhino Savanna, guests will be transported into their own African safari, creating connections and fostering an appreciation for Africa’s wildlife. The Living Desert participates in several conservation initiatives that support black rhinos in Eastern and Southern Africa. Currently listed as Critically Endangered by the IUCN (International Union for Conservation of
Nature), black rhino numbers are staggeringly low – there are just 5,600 individuals in Africa. Black rhinos’ main threats are humans, and in particular, the rampant poaching of their horns for illperceived medicinal cures. At maturity, three-year-old Nia, and Jaali, who turns two on Christmas Eve, will weigh approximately 3,000 pounds and stand about 5.5 feet tall at their shoulders. They were matched as a breeding pair through the Species Survival Plan (SSP). Because black rhinos are solitary species, except for breeding and rearing young, Jaali and Nia will each have distinct spaces throughout the Rhino Savanna habitat. The Living Desert is open daily from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., with last admission at 4 p.m. For more information visit LivingDesert.org.

Twentynine Palms High School students collecting food for famlies With the holidays arriving, families are struggling to put food on the table, let alone a Thanksgiving turkey, but the Twentynine Palms High School Interact Club is working hard to provide all the necessary ingredients, and a turkey, to local families so that they can celebrate Thanksgiving with dinner in their own homes. For nearly 20 years, the Twentynine Palms High School Interact Club, a community service club sponsored by Twentynine Palms Rotary, has gifted local families with a full Thanksgiving meal, including the bird. In 2021, this effort is especially needed as so many struggle with health and economic issues caused by COVID-19. Interim 29 Palms Rotary President David Smith said, “We are so proud of the tradition of “Service above Self” that these young adults have carried on for many years.” The club will provide 250 area
families with all the basics to celebrate Thanksgiving this month. Families in need of food assistance have pre-registered with Reach Out Morongo Basin. In addition to monetary assistance (to buy the Turkeys), The Club is seeking donations of: • Boxed Roll Mix • Bagged or Boxed Stuffing Mix • Packaged, Jarred or Canned Gravy Mix • Instant Mashed Potatoes • Canned or Instant Sweet Potatoes • Canned Cranberries • Canned Vegetables • Pumpkin Pie Mix The drive-through event will take place on Saturday, November 20, from noon until 1 p.m. at Twentynine Palms High School, 72750 Wildcat Way. To donate, contact Club Advisor Lori Cosgriff at 760367-9591 ext. 2046.

VA Ends Debt Relief The Department of Veterans Affairs called a cease-fire on collection of overpayments between April 2020 and September 2021 due to the COVID pandemic. Now that debt collection has started up again. The VA will not, however, actually make deductions from our benefits until January 2022. In addition, if you had unpaid medical co-payments before April 2020, they’ll start collecting those again. That must mean the COVID
pandemic is over, right? We’re all doing well, grocery prices haven’t soared, gas prices are still low, rents haven’t increased, we all have jobs or at least enough income if a spouse didn’t lose a job ... right? If the VA says you owe money, you’ll receive a debt collection letter. In it will be options for debt relief. You might be offered extended repayment plans, compromises, waivers or temporary suspensions in payment. If you get a letter, address the situation immediately. Don’t delay. There is a time limit to be considered for debt relief. For benefit debts, call 1-800827-0648 or go online to ask. va.gov. After signing in, you can track your message all the way from submission to resolution and see all your past messages
and responses. You can choose to get a reply back by email, phone or through the U.S. mail. If you have pharmacy co-payment or medical-care debt, call 1-866400-1238. Look at www.va.gov/resources/va-covid-19-debt-reliefoptions-for-veterans-and-dependents/ for more debt-related information and questions. Before you make any agreements about repayment, read and understand the fine print. A compromise means you’ll pay less than the full amount, but it’s due all at once within 30 days.
