Those in power at the senior center have now decreed that we will have the annual Christmas dinner indoors instead of out in the parking lot. This flash of brilliance came after they received a number of responses that were more along the lines of “Are you crazy?” rather than the expected RSVPs. The original plan was to spread tables across the asphalt outside, with culinary arts students bringing food and drink out from the kitchen in the center, and to park a bunch of senior citizens outside in the cold in the middle of December in New England to eat that dinner. Saner heads prevailed, I hear, when a retired nurse posed the question: “And just how many of our members do you suppose are going to end up in the hospital after

two hours of exposure to outdoor December temperatures?” The student chef, I also hear, claimed that he’d been asked to provide a “hot dinner” and wasn’t thrilled about having to work for hours over hot stoves only to have his creations subjected to icy temperatures. As of now, the dinner will be indoors with fewer tables. Santa will still arrive via limo, and the highschool chorus will still sing (although they’ll be out in the hall as there is no place for all of them in the actual room). Watch this space, however, because I hear there is a movement afoot (as well as a petition from members) to ditch the sit-down dinner completely and instead have a standup event with finger foods arrayed on tables and a cash bar over in the corner. “We want to see our friends and mingle” has been the cry (as well as what is written on the petition). “We want some good dance music” penciled in one signer. In a perfect world, the powersthat-be would have asked the members first. (c) 2021 King Features Synd., Inc.

Ian Brackenbury Channell, the official city wizard of Christchurch, NZ for more than 20 years, has been canned, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. City Council official Lynn McClelland explained that the position of wizard was a way to attract attention to the city and promote tourism. She said that the town has a new strategy that doesn’t require the services of a spokesman/wizard. But the word is that more likely that sexist remarks he made during a local TV

interview in which he said women “use cunning to get men who are thick … I love women, I forgive them all the time, I’ve never struck one yet. Never strike a woman because they bruise too easily is the first thing, and they’ll tell the neighbours and their friends and then you’re in big trouble.” The Association of Mature American Citizens [www.amac.us] provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50.

Celebrate the magic of the holidays at Festival of Lights Parade Following a year off due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the City of Palm Springs is delighted to announce the 29th Annual Palm Springs Festival of Lights Parade will return to world famous Palm Canyon Drive at 5:45 p.m. on Saturday, December 4. Vader-mania Some might say that Darth Vader stole the show when the first Star Wars movie premiered in 1977. Certainly, he ranks as one of the most popular movie villains in the history of motion pictures, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. Texan Bill McBride must think so; Bill would be perhaps the most fanatical member of a die-hard Darth Vader fan club, considering that he has amassed 70,000 pieces of Darth Vader collectables – a cache worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. His hobby gained him a ranking in the Guinness Book of World Re-

cords. McBride was just a boy when he saw the first Star Wars film and was introduced to Darth Vader. It triggered a fascination for collecting memorabilia and an urge to begin amassing Vader stuff that has only grown stronger in the ensuing years. “It’s something that still brings me joy and still truly makes me happy to do it. We all have our hobbies and our interests, and this is something I truly enjoy,” he says. Her wish was his command A dutiful 72-year-old Serbian husband Vojin Kusic built his house according to his wife’s specifications soon after they got married many years ago. Since then, he’s been rebuilding it and rebuilding it to fulfill his wife’s wishes, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. Not long ago Mrs. Kusic complained that she was not particularly happy with the view from her window prompting her devoted husband to build a completely new home. This time he devised a way to allow his better half to change her

views whenever the notion struck by simply activating a device that rotates the whole house a full 360 degrees. He built it by himself atop a rotating mechanism with electric motors and wheels from a military transport vehicle. The new home can make a complete about face at its fastest speed in 22 second or 24 hours at its slowest speed. VA Expands Assistance to Homeless Veterans With prices soaring all around us, imagine how bad it must be in places that already had high costs when it came to rental housing. In an effort to help homeless veterans, the Department of Veterans Affairs has updated its grant program to raise assistance caps in housing and subsidies. Specifically, in certain areas, the Supportive Services for Veteran Families (SSVF) rent grant will increase from 35% to 50% of

reasonable rent, without a need for recertification for two years. That has to be a huge aid to eligible veterans with families who are seeking stability. Additionally, the length of time a veteran and the family can stay in emergency housing has increased 15 days to a maximum of 60 days. This will be especially helpful in places with few rental vacancies. The SSVF program is a series of grants to private non-profit organizations that provide support services to very-low-income veterans and their families. The role of these non-profits is to get them into permanent housing that includes a lease, either annual or month to month, or even home ownership. They determine eligibility for assistance in part by considering whether the veteran is at risk of becoming homeless without the

grant, doesn’t have a fixed place to sleep at night and will likely continue in that condition without the grant, or is at risk of becoming homeless within 90 days. If you’re a homeless vet with a family or are in danger of becoming homeless, hook up with Supportive Services for Veterans Families as soon as possible. There are several eligibility conditions, and you might qualify for Rapid Rehousing. Call them 24/7 at 1-877-424-3838. You also can call the nearest VA medical center and ask for the Homeless Coordinator. The VA is behind this change so much that it finalized the rule without even waiting for the typical public comment period after publication in the Federal Register.
