‘Fiddler on the Roof’

Warms the soul with love, laughter and the meaning of tradition

O

ne of the all-time classics, “Fiddler on the Roof” takes the stage with a fresh vision of this beloved theatrical masterpiece from Tony winner Joseph Stein and Pulitzer Prize winners Jerry Bock and Sheldon Harnick. Everyone will want to hum along to “Tradition,” “Sunrise, Sunset,” “If I Were A Rich Man,” “Matchmaker, Matchmaker” and “To Life (L’Chaim!).” Heartwarming themes center on fathers and daughters, husbands and wives and life, love and laughter. Created by Tony-winning director Bartlett Sher and the team behind “South Pacific,” “The King and I” and 2017 Tony-winning Best Play “Oslo,” the show features a talented cast, lavish orchestra and stunning movement and dance from Israeli choreographer Hofesh Shechter, based on original staging by Jerome Robbins, Set in Imperial Russia around 1905, the tale is based on “Tevye and his Daughters” (or “Tevye the Dairyman”) and other tales by Sholem Aleichem. Tevye, a milkman in the village of Anatevka, attempts to maintain his Jewish traditions as outside influences encroach upon his family’s lives. He must cope with the strong-willed actions of his three older daughters who wish to marry for love. An edict of the Tsar eventually evicts the

Jews from their village. The original Broadway production of the show, which opened in 1964, had the first musical theatre run in history to surpass 3,000 performances. It held the record for the longest-running Broadway musical for almost 10 years prior to “Grease,” and it won nine Tony Awards, including best musical, score, book, direction and choreography. It spawned five Broadway revivals and a highly successful 1971 film adaptation. My neighbor still thinks she’ll be going on a cruise to a foreign country in the spring. She calls her travel agent every few weeks to ask if the cruise is still on. Of course the travel agent doesn’t want to say no and have to give back the money just yet, so the answer is yes. My neighbor has been busily sewing new outfits for her cruise dinners. Me, I’ve been keeping silent about it, but I fear that cruise might not come to pass. There is always debate about requirements for masks on cruise ships, but that might be the least of the concerns. The latest updates have several countries in Level 4 Do Not Travel categories. My neighbor’s destination is currently at a Level 3, which is Reconsider Travel. New ones are being added all the time. few months, especially if it’s internationally, look at AARP’s travel page for helpful information: www.aarp.org/travel. Watch the Department of State’s website as well: travel. state.gov/content/travel.html. Look for the information on your specific destination, and keep an eye on it, as it’s all subject to change. Invest in trip cancellation and interruption insurance. Make sure you understand the details of what it will and won’t cover. Be sure what the cruise company’s policies are as well. Be certain you know exactly when you’ll need a COVID-19 test before you go -- and that you can get one. At this point, many areas have backlogs on testing appointments, and walk-in places are often backed up for many hours. If you’re traveling internationally, you’ll also need a test before you return. The logistics and timing can be complicated right now. Your best bet: Stay in close touch with your travel agent about changes, warnings and timing. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Army Sergeant John Gonsalves penned a letter to his mom and mailed it to her from Germany at the end of World War II. It was found 76 years later in a U.S. Postal Service processing and distribution facility in Pennsylvania in December 2021 and delivered in January 2022 not to his mother, who had passed away in 2015, but to his widow, Angelina Gonsalves, who lives in Woburn, MA and who was overwhelmed, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens. Her late husband, Johnny, passed away in six years ago. And, in a local TV interview with Angelina she said, “I love it. I love it. When I think it’s all his words, I can’t believe it. It’s wonderful. And I feel like I have him here with me.” The Association of Mature American Citizens [www.amac.us] provides the Filler Files as a service on issues of concern to Americans over 50.

Full Education Housing Benefits Extended If you’re in school and were about to lose half of your VA education housing benefits at the end of last month due to remote classes, you’re safe. Congress pushed through the REMOTE (Responsible Education Mitigating Option and Technical Extensions) Act, and it’s going to cover you for the next six months. The problem has been attending classes in person versus taking classes remotely. If you typically

attend via remote classes, your housing allowance was always half that of in-person students. The pandemic landed, and with that colleges and schools went remote last year, which threatened to halve the benefit money of in-person students forced into remote classes. Congress saw that and extended the full coverage until December. They recently stepped in again. Now you’ll be covered until summer -- while schools sort out whether they’re bringing students back into the classroom for the January-May semester, keeping everyone at home again or a combination of the two. As is typical of the pandemic era, even if you’re currently attending inperson classes, your school might shift to remote at any time. You and the 55,000 other student veterans potentially im-

pacted by those reduced housing benefits can thank Nevada Sen. Catherine Cortez Masto and others for introducing the bill and pushing it to become law. Not a student? Have you decided to sit out the shaky job market and go back to school or aim for a new trade? Start with an intro to your veterans education benefits: www.va.gov/education. Scroll down and click on the Eligibility link. Then click on the GI Bill Comparison Tool on the right and learn what programs and education benefits are available for you. Different programs have different benefits, so study those first to see which might be the best fit. If you need help sorting it all out, call the GI Bill Hotline at 888-GIBILL-1 (888-442-4551). The USOC later voted to boycott the Moscow games. On Jan. 21, 1789, “The Power of Sympathy or the Triumph of Nature Founded in Truth” is printed in Boston, the first novel by an American writer to be published in America. Early editions did not carry the author’s name, but a later printing credited Sarah Wentworth Apthorp Morton. On Jan. 22, 1779, famed Tory outlaw Claudius Smith meets his end on the gallows in Goshen, New York. Nicknamed the “Cowboy of the Ramapos” for his use of guerrilla tactics against Patriot civilians, legend has it that Smith’s skull was filled with mortar and included in the edifice of the Goshen Court House. On Jan. 23, 1855, John Moses Browning, sometimes referred

Local music showcases expands After 14 years as a Morongo Basin Radio fixture, the “Z107.7 Local Music Showcase” has expanded to two hours. The unique show, produced in a state-of-the art solar powered studio in Landers, exclusively highlights the work of Morongo Basin musicians in a hyper-local eclectic offering. Since 2008, the show has aired Sunday afternoons at 4 p.m. The show is hosted by local Singer-Songwriter Pat Kearns, who is also a professional Audio Engineer. Kearns started hosting and producing the show in February of 2020 and has just produced his 100th show. As the show grew

more successful, the local music submissions have grown accordingly. Kearns said there were some local music he was in touch with that weren’t on the show, so he has been gathering new artists that weren’t in the library and adding them. Currently the Local Music library has about 3,000 songs from 150 different artists. The show is also streamed live at z1077fm.com, on the free Z107.7 app (search KCDZ), and as a Podcast If you are a local musician and want to make a submission for the show, or want to make a suggestion, contact Kearns at z1077localmusicshowcase@gmail.com.
