he City of Palm Desert will once again play host to a series of free, weekly concerts at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park amphitheater throughout the month of October. Featuring a variety of talented musical acts designed to please music lovers of all ages and tastes, the concerts will be held every Thursday evening from 6 to 7:30 p.m. There will be free parking, food trucks, and more. The entertainment kicks off on October 6, with a performance by the award-winning We Belong, a tribute to Pat Benatar and her husband and lead guitarist Neil Giraldo. This is a wonderful tribute to a legendary music couple that continue to pack venues to this day. We Belong spans the decades taking the audience on a journey throughout Pat and Neil’s entire career. The series continues on October 13, with a performance by the extremely talented Blue Breeze Band, a multi-talented collection of professional musicians who have played alongside rock icons including Teena Marie, Evelyn Champagne King, the Brothers Johnson, L.T.D., The Temptations, Lakeside and Edgar Winter. This popular band delivers it all – Motown,

They are known for their highenergy performance evocative of the Chuck Berry and The Wonders era. This quartet of Canadian musicians delivers an exciting show that has audiences dancing. The Fall Concert Series closes out on October 27, with a show by the Pop Rebels Band, the ultimate variety band featuring a range of genres from rock n’ roll, Latin, R&B, and dance music from the 60s to today. They will be highlighting hits from the 70s to kick off the City of Palm Desert’s 50th
Anniversary and the release of the new City Calendar. While the music is the main draw, food and beverage trucks will be available each concert evening offering a variety of culinary offerings an hour before the concerts. Concert-goers may also bring picnic baskets along with blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the shows. Alcoholic beverages and smoking are prohibited at Civic Center Park. Palm Desert Civic Center Park is located in Downtown Palm Desert, on the northeast corner of San Pablo Avenue and Fred Waring Drive. In an attempt to keep brain cells active this winter, I have signed up for a college course. The good news is that it’s all online and it’s free. The other good news is that it’s sponsored by a major university. It’s called Open Courseware, and I found my class on the internet. Yale, Harvard, MIT, Stanford and many others have “massive open online courses,” also known as MOOCs, and their main purpose is to provide learning opportunities. You have to appreciate MIT especially. They make course material for their 2,600 classes “available on the web, free of charge, to any user anywhere in the world.” Most of these open courseware classes are self-paced (do them when you want after downloading the lecture). Most don’t get you a certificate or a degree, but then most don’t cost anything either. Beware, of course, scammers who’d like to take your personal information and charge you for

a class that’s actually free and doesn’t require you to sign up. Your best bet, until you’re familiar with open courseware, is to stick to the big-name universities. For a three-minute video showing an explanation of MIT’s open courseware, see www.youtube. com/watch?v=ICa_4xUr8BA. Read the fine print on the website as you hunt for a class. Read the syllabus (description of the course) and the list of texts to be used. If you’re required to read books, see if they’re free to download online. (Some of the material downloads are huge.) Pay attention to the estimated time commitment for the course you want to take. If you definitely want to attend in-person college but need financial help, see www.aseniorcitizenguideforcollege.com. Click on “Find Your State Tuition Waivers” and see if any in your state are covered. Some colleges will have a link to an application for a tuition waiver for seniors; some will just have a website and phone number to call for information. Note: The Great Courses (www. thegreatcourses.com) are not open courseware and will cost money. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

It was a tasty record that a team of chefs from all over Italy concocted recently -- a mouthwatering 70-foot, 3.7-inch cannoli, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. Its crispy, tasty shell was filled with 1,500 pounds of sweet ricotta much to the delight of the residents of Caltanissetta, Sicily, which is known as the birthplace of the cannoli.

Daredevil dares again Nathan Paulin is, indeed, a “daring young man,” says the Association of Mature American Citizens. But, instead of flying through the air “with the greatest of ease ... on the flying Trapeze,” he prefers tightrope walking for long distances high up in the air. He first
made a name for himself when, in 2017, he crossed a 2,198-foot-long rope suspended 230 feet above the River Seine in Paris. This time the adventurous highliner took a breezy 7,218 foot walk nearly 330 feet above Mont Saint Michel in Normandy.

Extension for Debt Hardship Relief Period If you owe benefit debts to the Department of Veterans Affairs, your hardship relief period, previously set to expire on Sept. 30, has been extended to Dec. 31. Those types of debts can include those for education, disability compensation and non-service pension, and you might have been approved for either a waiver, a compromise or an extended repayment plan, as well as the hardship suspension of debt.
An egg
These debts impact half a million veterans and sometimes can be the result of a clerical error, the veteran not being able to understand the paperwork or a letter being lost in the mail. Worse is when the error occurred when the veteran didn’t see the fine print and suddenly started receiving collection bills for debts he didn’t know he owed. By now you might have received a letter from the VA, if you have been making payments. Don’t be afraid to open that letter. It’s likely extension information for you. Consider using it to apply for a hardship extension that will carry you to the end of the year. If you ever received an overpayment and were told you have to pay it back, give them a call at 800-827-0648. If the money you owe results from either a pharmacy co-payment or medical care
debt, instead call 866-400-1238 and talk to them. Get to the bottom of the actual source of the debt. Did a clerk make a mistake? Did you fail to verify dependents or write in a wrong number? Do you have the canceled checks to show that you actually paid? Find out what’s wrong. The VA has taken a number of steps over the years to help veterans saddled with VA-related debt. They canceled co-pays from April 2020 to September 2021. They changed the income to qualify for relief. They took away the Financial Status Report for hardship eligibility. And, a big deal: They cut nearly all the reports to credit agencies for medical debt. That can have a big impact on your future credit score. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc
