Recent government figures outlined food price increases for one month. The numbers are grim. Fruits and vegetables went up 2.3%, the highest since 2010. Dairy went up 1.9%, the highest since 2011. Cereals and bakery items went up 1.1%. Averaged over the past 12 months, food prices have risen 8.6% (the highest increase since 1981), with poultry and fish climbing 13% and beef soaring 16%. Wow! We knew it was bad because each time we go to the grocery store, we’re spending more to get less. But to see the figures laid out in print just brings home how bad things have gotten. Bloomberg (www.bloomberg. com), whose economists we need to keep an eye on, predicts that this year we’ll pay an additional $5,200 for all household items (including gas, heating fuel and everything else) and services, which it calculates at $433 per month. We need to reconsider how we feel about food banks. We seniors generally don’t want to do

that, saying, “Oh, others need it more.” Well, at this point, maybe we are those others? In a few days, I’ll be driving three of my senior neighbors to the food bank for the weekly pickup. It will be their first time, and they are nervous. But I made a scouting trip last week, parking across the street from the line of cars and walking over to talk to the person in charge. I was able to report back: No, they don’t take your name or ask questions (except maybe to ask if you’d prefer apple or orange juice). No, they’re not judgmental. No, it’s not leftover expired food, and the fruits and vegetables were fresh and lovely. The people were friendly and welcoming, happy to do what they were doing. Just go to the food bank. You won’t be judged. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

fect minute at the same minute.” Nevertheless, the sight of so many senior citizens was spectacular. As the saying goes, if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again and that is exactly what Mr. Brodsky-Chenfield is going to do – next year.

Headliners will include Thomas Rhett, Carrie Underwood and Luke Combs (yes, seriously!) with other performers to include Jordan Davis, Tanya Tucker, Ryan Hurd, The Cactus Blossoms, The Black Crowes, Smokey Robinson, Maren Morris and around 40 more acts on multiple stages. Delicious eats and drinks will include fare from Guy Fieri’s Smokehouse and Half-Pint Hootenanny among dozens of other tasty food and beverage vendors. omino to see what this superstar DJ and producer is cranking out. Plan a ride on the giant Ferris wheel (Le Grand Wheel), second only in size to the London Eye and Le Grande Roue de Paris. Easy Pork Carnitas a Cinco de Mayo Classic 2. In a small bowl, mix the cumin, oregano, salt, chili powder, garlic powder, onion powder and black pepper. Sprinkle the seasoning evenly over the meat, stirring until the meat is well-coated. Melt-in-your-mouth, flavorful and juicy with irresistible caramelized crunchy bits, carnitas means “little meats” in Spanish. If you like carnitas brimming with classic flavors like Mexican oregano, cumin, chili powder and a surprising bright note of citrus, you’re going to love this divine recipe, just in time for Cinco de Mayo. This recipe yields restaurantquality pork carnitas at a fraction of restaurant costs. It uses historically inexpensive cuts of heavily marbled pork that are slow cooked for hours until the meat is completely tender. After cooking, it falls apart and practically shreds itself. Before serving, the meat is broiled to make those signature delicious crispy bits. Carnitas can be the star of your Cinco de Mayo festivities, but don’t wait for a party, they make any day a celebration. Carnitas are equally at home in your nacho platter, a build-your-own taco or burrito bar, or served simply with a fork, corn tortillas, salsa and lots of napkins. Choosing the right cut of pork is

essential for the tender, juicy quality we’re looking for. This recipe doesn’t work with lean meats, so no lean pork loin, and please don’t try this with chicken breast! You’ll want pork shoulder or pork butt, with or without bone. Incidentally, they’re the exact same cut of meat from the shoulder of the pig. The name “butt” comes from Colonial America, when butchers in the Boston area would pack the pork shoulder in barrels they called “butts.” Lastly, this recipe calls for Mexican oregano, which is entirely different from regular Mediterranean oregano. Mexican oregano is earthy and grassy with citrus notes and is related to lemon verbena. Mediterranean oregano is subtle and related to the mint family. You can find Mexican oregano in the ethnic spice section of the grocery store, usually for under a dollar.

Slow Cooker Pork Carnitas Yield: 6 to 8 servings. Prep: 10 minutes. Cook: 4 hours • 4 pounds pork shoulder (also known as “pork butt”) • 1 lime -- juice and zest • 1/2 orange -– juice and zest • 1 tablespoon ground cumin • 1 tablespoon dried Mexican oregano • 2 teaspoons kosher salt • 1 teaspoon chili powder • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon onion powder • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper 1. Cut the pork shoulder into big chunks, about 4-inches cubed, and place in the slow cooker. Add the zest and juice of the lime and half an orange, and stir to coat the meat in the liquid.

3. Cover and cook on HIGH for 4 hours or LOW for 7-8 hours. Just wait until you can smell this slice of heaven! When it’s cooked, using a slotted spoon, remove the pork to a rimmed baking sheet that’s been covered in foil or with cooking spray. 4. Pour the liquid from the slow cooker into a small saucepan and boil to reduce until thickened. Pour this lovely liquid over the pork and shred with two forks, coating the meat with the sauce. 5. Turn on the broiler and place the pan o’goodness under the broiler until some of the edges are brown and crispy, about 5 minutes. But keep your eye on it, because burning a pan filled with this amazing stuff would be a crime. This recipe is so easy, but please don’t skip the last step. Caramelizing the meat under the broiler to concentrate the flavors is what takes this dish over the top. Buen Provecho! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Imagine the looks on the faces of cops who pulled over a car one night recently that was traveling in downtown San Francisco in the dark without its headlights on and, more important, without a driver. Nor were there any passengers in the autonomous taxi, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. The driverless cab belonged to Cruise, a licensed taxi service, that used social media to explain that “Our AV yielded to the police vehicle, then pulled over to the nearest safe location for the traffic stop, as intended. An officer contacted Cruise personnel and no citation was issued,”

Braille Institute Coachella Valley will offer on-site classes and inperson services for the first time at their new location, starting May 2 with the Spring/Summer classes. The new Braille Institute center in Palm Desert opened briefly to the public in 2020 but then temporarily closed to in-person services due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Limited weekly in-person classes will be held this summer over multiple weeks during the semester period. The Spring/Summer in-person offerings include Daily Living Skills and Introduction to Cooking for those with Low Vision. New students must complete a low vision assessment or have been onboarded by a Braille Institute Intake Specialist. To register for classes at Coachella Valley, contact the Administrator at 760-321-1111. Students preferring to attend classes remotely may still attend “live and online” classes and workshops remotely from the comfort of their home. Braille Institute utilizes the Microsoft Teams plat-

form for distance learning classes which can be attended using a computer, tablet, smartphone or traditional phone. Each session is live so the student will have the ability to speak with the instructor and other participants. Remote classes include Personal Management & Sensory Awareness (students learn to apply makeup, handle money, do household chores, and maintain hygiene), Cooking with Ease (teaches how

to use different appliances and safe meal preparation), Support Connections (how to maintain social, work and dating lives for those who have left the workforce and are coping with vision loss), and Vision Loss INSIGHT (offers an opportunity to meet new people and re-connect with others who are all experiencing vision loss). In addition to classes, Braille Institute also offers a wide range of one-day only workshops that are usually 1-2 hours on a specific topic. It takes years to become a great soprano Maria Callas, Birgit Nilsson and Joan Sutherland earned their fame in their day as the world’s greatest sopranos. Ten-year-old Victory Brinker of Latrobe, PA may be a little too young for her debut at New York’s Metropolitan Opera or La Scala in Milan, Italy but the odds are she’ll make it one day soon, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. At the age of seven she was performing at the Pittsburgh Public Theatre and was

dubbed the world’s youngest opera singer by the folks at Guinness who keep track of world records like this one. Brinker says her opera-loving mom introduced her to the world of opera when she was six years old, inspiring her to pursue the art form. As she put it, she loved “the challenge of the difficult arrangements, the technique required to sing, all the runs, and the different languages all the arias are written in.”

Can VA Puppy Program Help Combat PTSD? The Department of Veterans Affairs has published its plan for starting up a pilot program for the Puppies Assisting Wounded Servicemembers for Veterans Therapy Act. In the PAWS Act, the VA will do a fiveyear pilot program to train dogs as a means of assisting veterans with PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder), with the veterans doing the training. Five VA medical centers will be part of the pilot program: San Anto-

nio; West Palm Beach, Florida; Anchorage, Alaska; Asheville, North Carolina; and Palo Alto, California. There are three requirements for veterans to be eligible to join the pilot program: be enrolled in VA health care, be diagnosed with PTSD and get a recommendation from a VA mental healthcare provider. Veterans getting care from a non-VA provider will need to contact the VA facility where they get authorization for the non-VA care and ask about taking part in the pilot. Additionally, the veteran must have had an appointment for some type of care within three months of asking to join the program, and then continue with appointments every three months. The VA would be required to provide the dogs to veterans with mental illnesses who do not have

mobility problems with training provided by certified trainers. Veterans would not be allowed to be around the dogs unless the trainer is present, nor to use any shock collars. At the end of training, the veteran can adopt the dog if the trainer believes it’s in the veteran’s best interest, and additional training will continue for the life of the dog. However, some of the training involves getting a dog ready to be a service animal for someone else, so a veteran might work with multiple dogs. To read all the fine print about the dog program, go to the Federal Register (www.federalregister.gov) and search for PAWS Act, then look for Implementation of the PAWS for Veterans Therapy Act.
