The too-young staffers at the senior center finally figured out that we’re not coming back until COVID is gone. And it’s not gone. In some areas it’s easing up a bit, but here it’s still going strong. We’re not willing to risk contagion by dashing in the door of the senior center and pretending things are back to normal. At least once a week the center sends out emails and gets few replies in response. Come to the Ladies Lunch served indoors? No thanks. Experiment with still life photography in the meeting room, with vases, statuettes and fruit provided? No. We held out, refusing as a group to be party to any potential COVID-spreading indoor activity. Finally, the staff got it.

They went with videos. The art classes will be online. The book club will have an online discussion, with a link to how to log in to the meeting. And the exercise classes will be posted online so everyone can stretch and work out at home. But it was the offer of free haircuts that broke our resolve. Some of us haven’t been in a salon for two years. The rules were specific. Stay in our car until we were handed an at-home COVID test, which we would take in the car. If it proved to be negative, we could proceed to the next step (one person at a time), which was to sit on a chair in the hall inside the right-side door of the center and wait for our turn. When the person ahead of us was finished (down the hall in the kitchen), she would be escorted out the left-side door to the parking lot. It was glorious. We each came out of the left-side door with a spring in our step, freshly relieved of two years of unruly hair. Staff should have thought of this before. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Night sky photography in Joshua Tree National Park If you enjoy photography and are fascinated by the desert night sky, this two-day (May 7-8) hands-on workshop is for you! Noted sky photographer Dennis Mammana will teach participants how to use even the simplest of cameras to create magnificent celestial portraits. The class will begin with tips for setting up and shooting the night sky including a few tricks of the trade. That evening, participants will head to a scenic sky location in Joshua Tree National Park to try out their new knowledge under the real night sky. The next day, the class will look at images from the previous night, discuss their
pros and cons, and try out some image processing techniques in PhotoShop. Any camera, digital or film, will work, as long as it can be adjusted manually, used with a tripod, remote control, and can take exposures of 15, 30, or more seconds. Students should have a good working knowledge of their equipment prior to taking this class. Students need to provide their own camera, tripod, camera equipment, and dress in layers as the nights can be cold. To sign up or more info visit joshuatree.org. Class meets at the Oasis Visitor Center in Twentynine Palms.
Mental health awareness month at Joslyn Center Mental health is wealth, especially during Mental Health Awareness Month, which is celebrated in May. The stigma around mental health and treatment has long existed, even though this has started to change. Still, people hesitate to seek help or even talk about it with their loved ones for fear of being judged and facing unnecessary backlash. Simple logic dictates that if we are hurt anywhere, we must seek treatment to get better. This applies
to both our mental and physical well-being. Joslyn Center and our Wellness Center offer a range of mental health services, from activities that reduce isolation and fitness classes that reduce stress to one-on-one counseling sessions with licensed therapists (English & Spanish-speaking). Cuddly creatures
What can be more soothing than having an affectionate cuddly creature as a pet – a dog, a cat, a hamster or a Dusky Pademelon? Although they are very rare, indeed, Pandemelons – also known as miniature kangaroos – are nonetheless as cuddly as they come, says the Association of Mature American Citizens. Unfortunately, for a variety of reasons they are threatened with extinction. And so, when the caretakers at the Chester Zoo in Cheshire, England spotted a newborn in its mom’s pouch recently, there was quite a bit of excitement. The zoo announced the birth on its website, explaining that they are also referred to as dusky wallabies and that “they can only be found in the forests of New Guinea and some smaller nearby islands in Indonesia. Sadly, its population has declined by 30% in the last two decades as a result of trapping, hunting and deforestation to make way for rice farming and logging.”

Midcentury modernists now have another opportunity to celebrate midcentury modern architecture, art, interior and landscape design, and vintage culture in the Palm Springs area during the month of May, complementing the annual February and October events. During May, Modernism Week has teamed up with acclaimed design expert and Emmy-nominated host of Netflix’s Queer Eye Bobby Berk to offer Modernism Week Showcase Home: Casa Tierra, an idyllic desert modern escape located in Palm Desert. Also being added is “Neutra’s Neighborhood: Tour Six Richard Neutra Works in Los Angeles,” a
guided walking tour to explore architect Richard Neutra’s neighborhood in the Los Angeles area of Casa Tierra Silver Lake. The other new program is “Temple Isaiah - The Evolution of Classical to Extreme Modernism,” a guided tour which contrasts the E. Stewart Williams modernist-designed 1950s Al Liberman Chapel with the 1980s west-facing addition. Attendees can also plan on historical walking tours, craft cocktail mixology classes, a dinner and live music experience, and a special “Top Ten” tour excursion highlighting Desert Modernist architecture. Halloween is still about six months away but that isn’t stopping a British conservation group known as English Heritage, from attempting to break the record for the largest number of people wearing vampire costumes. The Association of Mature American Citizens reports the gathering will take place on May 26 at Whitby Abbey in North Yorkshire, England, which appropriately enough is said to
have been Bram Stoker’s inspiration for his Dracula novel. And so, they are hoping to attract 1,897 appropriately dressed attendees to mark the 125th anniversary of the book’s publication even though they need just 1,040 visitors to break the Guinness World Record. The record is currently held by an American organization in Doswell, VA, which had 1,039 Dracula wannabes in attendance.

Meet the star of your Mother’s Day Brunch

What longtime NFL reporter and insider for ESPN was known as “The Professor”? 4. Wallace Wade Stadium is the home field of what university’s football team? 5. Three pitchers in Major League Baseball history threw unofficial no-hitters, having pitched eight hitless innings in losing efforts on the road. Who are they? 7. In ice hockey, what is the name of the shaded area directly in front of each team’s goal?
This Sunday is Mother’s Day! Here’s the plan: Let’s “take” Mom to her own personal French bistro for brunch. Place a table somewhere unexpected, like your garden or in front of the fireplace or a pretty window. Set a lovely table with flowers, coffee and mimosas. Add some twinkle lights and music. To complete the Mother’s Day bistro experience, have her wait outside for an hour to be seated. Just kidding! Don’t do that. Here’s a lovely recipe perfect for Mother’s Day (or any day!). We have a decadent dish that’s fancy pants, frugal and fabulous. Drum roll please ... Clafouti! Clafouti (pronounced klafoo-TEE) is a simple French dish that serves as dessert, a special breakfast or the star of your next brunch. It’s extremely versatile, very inexpensive and certainly elegant. Did I mention it’s easy? If you can make pancakes, you can make clafouti. You make this classic French dessert by pouring a sweet crepe-like batter over fruit in a baking dish and baking. The eggy batter cooks around the fruit, resulting in a light, airy, flan-like texture. Use whatever fruit you have on hand, whip up a quick batter in your blender, and bake to impress. It is delicious warm, at room temperature or straight from the fridge. I’m using fresh strawberries in this recipe because they’re coming into season, so they’ll be affordable, abundant and delicious. Frozen strawberries are available year-round.
STRAWBERRY CLAFOUTI Yield: 4 brunch or 6 dessert servings Prep: 10 minutes Cook: 45 minutes • Softened butter for the baking dish • 1 1/2 cups half and half or whole milk • 1/3 cup white sugar • 1/3 cup brown sugar • 3 eggs • 1 tablespoon vanilla • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 1/2 cup flour • 1 pound frozen or fresh strawberries • 2 teaspoons cornstarch, if using frozen berries • Powdered sugar, for garnish 1. Preheat oven to 350 F. 2. Lightly butter an 8-cup baking dish or heavy pie dish. Using a blender, combine the half and half, sugars, eggs, vanilla, salt and flour. Blend for 30 seconds. 3. Let the batter rest while you prepare the berries. If you’re using frozen strawberries, drain the juice and toss berries with 2 teaspoons cornstarch to help absorb some of the remaining juices. If your berries are whole, slice them in half. 4. Place berries, cut side down, in your baking dish. Pour the batter over the berries. Bake in the oven for 45
minutes, or until it’s puffed up, browned and a knife inserted into the center comes out clean. Remove the clafoutis from the oven and allow it to cool for a little while, during which time you’ll see it deflate and settle a bit, so have your camera ready. 5. Serve warm or at room temperature, dusted with powdered sugar and whipped cream if desired. Now, once you know how to make this batter, it’s a perfect blank canvas for almost any fruit you can think of. Cherries, bananas, plums, peaches, nectarines, blueberries, raspberries and blackberries can all get into the clafouti club. Depending on the season, enjoy sauteed apples and pears, dried figs, raisins and cranberries. This is an excellent place for thawed frozen fruit to shine; just make sure to drain the liquid off before using them, or it will compromise the setting of the custard. And, because the recipe calls for a small amount of flour, you can easily make it gluten free; just swap an equal amount of brown rice flour. Give your next soiree French flair with this versatile frugally fabulous dish. Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Divas on a Dime. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Palm Desert’s Concerts in the Park return for springs series
The City of Palm Desert is hosting a series of free, weekly concerts at the Palm Desert Civic Center Park amphitheater throughout the month of May. Featuring a variety of music, the concerts will be held every Thursday from 6:30 – 8 p.m. with some of the top acts from across the region performing. Plenty of free parking, food trucks, games for kids and more. This season’s concerts offer a mix of styles from country to classic rock. The season starts on Cinco de Mayo with a performance by Santanaways, an electrifying Latin/blues rock band that pays tribute to Santana. Bandleader Benito Meschoulam’s uncanny similarities to Carlos Santana in appearance and playing style helps this band deliver its authentic vibe.
Other concert series performers include Flashback Heart Attack, a nationally acclaimed 80’s show from Orange County scheduled for May 12. Clad in flashy outfits and occasionally delivering a bit of choreography, Flashback Heart Attack nevertheless plays the biggest New Wave hits of the 80’s with precision and respect. It’s a high-energy show the audience will long remember. Country takes center stage on May 19 when the Kelly Rae Band delivers crowd-pleasing tunes that will have concertgoers on their feet. While the music is the main draw, food and beverage trucks will be available each concert evening offering a variety of culinary offerings an hour before the concerts. Concertgoers may also bring picnic baskets along with blankets and lawn chairs to enjoy the shows. Alcoholic beverages and smoking are prohibited at Civic Center Park. Families are encouraged to arrive even earlier to take advantage of the games and activities offered by Family YMCA of the Desert prior to the start of the concerts. Palm Desert Civic Center Park is located on the northeast corner of San Pablo Avenue and Fred Waring Drive. For more information on attending the Concert in the Park series, visit www.DiscoverPalmDesert.com, or the VisitPalmDesert page on Facebook & Instagram.

Brain Teaser Answer Mount Everest. It was still the highest in the world, it just hadn’t been discovered yet.
Honor Flights Resume Honor Flights are back. After sitting out the trips for the last two years due to the pandemic, Honor Flights are up and running again. The Honor Flight Network consists of independent groups (hubs) that take veterans on allexpenses-paid trips to Washington, D.C., to visit the memorials and monuments. This involves free airfare and visits to the memorials with guardians and volunteers every step of the way while in the company of other veterans.
You only have to see the trip photos and videos to understand how much these trips are appreciated. In 2019 alone (the last year they had the trips before COVID shut things down), they flew over 23,000 veterans and 18,000 guardians. Since its beginning in 2005, Honor Flights has taken over 245,000 veterans on these trips. At this point their focus is signing up veterans who served in World War II, as well as veterans who are severely ill or injured. Would you like to go, either as a veteran, a guardian or a volunteer? Go online to Honor Flights at www.honorflight.org. Click the regional hubs for a map of states; click your state for contact info and the hub’s website and schedule, as well as the applications for veterans, guardians and volunteers. My state, for example, has one flight planned every
month through October. Scroll down the page for state-related info and videos. Call them at 937521-2400 with your questions. Honor Flights is non-profit and can use our dollars. (They rate 4 stars from Charity Navigator.) You can donate on their website (www.honorflight.org/donateonline.html), either to one of the regional hubs that covers your state or to the network as a whole. Or, if you’d rather send a check than make a donation online, you can send it to: HonorFlight, Inc. 1405 South Fern Street No. 702 Arlington, VA 22202 We haven’t opened our wallets in quite a while. I think we should do so for this. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

ARIES (March 21 to April 19) You Ewes and Rams will find your ideas cheered by a mostly receptive flock. Those few dissenters could well be turned around by your charm and powers of persuasion.
CANCER (June 21 to July 22) That unpleasant situation you hoped would go away by itself needs immediate attention before it affects an upcoming decision. Expect your supporters to rally around your cause.
TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) It’s time for the bold and beautiful Bovine to shake off the dust of the past and shape up with new ideas for the future. This could surprise some folks, but they’ll soon adjust.
LEO (July 23 to August 22) You’re moving up and away from that recent setback. But remain cautious about finances. An exercise in thrift today helps cushion a possible end-of-the-month money squeeze.
GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Those nagging new doubts about an upcoming decision should alert you to step back (at least
VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) You’re still dealing with overtones of pessimism that cause you to doubt your ability to make some
needed changes. But the negative pressures will ease up by week’s end. LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) There could be some fallout from the way you handled a recent family problem. But those who know that you were in the right won’t hesitate to step in on your behalf. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) Financial strains ease by week’s end. Meanwhile, focus on cultivating that new relationship if you hope to have it blossom into something more meaningful. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Health matters once again dominate the week. Be careful not to ignore recurrences of an old problem. An almost-forgotten commitment resurfaces.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Reassess your decision to stay with the status quo. It might seem like the sensible thing to do right now, but changes around you could make that choice a risky one. Palm Springs Cultural Center hosts 70MM Film Festival this weekend Palm Springs Cultural Center is honored to host The Secret Movie Club’s Palm Springs 70mm Getaway Film Festival. The Secret Movie Club, a community of film lovers based in LA, will screen three classic films on 70MM in the Cultural Center’s Historic Camelot Theater, one of the largest screens in the Coachella Valley. 70mm delivers an incredibly rich visual experience, revealing details and color dimensions not seen in traditional formats.
Friday, May 6 at 8 p.m., 2001: A Space Odyssey Saturday, May 7 at 8 p.m., Lawrence of Arabia Sunday, May 8 at 2 p.m., West Side Story All three films were originally shot on 70MM film, a format still considered the ultimate cinematic experience by many filmmakers. The original 625 seat Camelot Theatre, located at the Palm Springs Shopping Center,
was opened by the President of Metropolitan Theatres, Sherrill Corwin, in February of 1967. The heralded state-of-the-art cinema, equipped to the standards of only three other theaters in the United States, debuted with a star-studded screening of “Dr. Zhivago.” Lauren Wolfer, Program Director of the PSCC, said “Cinema is a core part of our identity as an arts and cultural nonprofit organiza-
tion, and what better way for us to honor the legacy of the Camelot Theater than to show these wonderful films as they were meant to be seen. We’re so grateful to the Secret Movie Club for this opportunity.” Tickets and more information are available at psculturalcenter. org/pscc. The theatre is located at 2300 E. Baristo Road, Palm Springs.
