When it comes to buying a phone, there are so many choices that the decision can be difficult. Much depends on what you want to do with it and how much you want to spend. What can we do on our phones? Depending on the type of phone (and our skill level), we can make calls, get voicemails, look at maps, write shopping lists and notes, roam the internet, play games, receive and send text messages, take photos, have face-toface meetings and more. Some of us, however, would rather keep it simple. We want to make and receive calls, period. If a phone comes with a few more features, that’s fine, but we probably won’t use them. How to choose: Decide what you need the phone to do. Ask a lot of questions, especially of tech-savvy family members. Think about whether you want to pay upfront for your phone or have a longterm contract. Decide whether the phone is only for emergencies

It took Elliott Tanner of St. Louis Park, MN only 13 years to graduate from the University of Minnesota with a bachelor’s degree. That’s how old he is, explains the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC]. And the teenage prodigy, who majored in physics and math, says he plans to get his doctorate. Elliott was reading when he was two years old and he graduated from the Normandale Community College with an associate of science degree when he was eleven. But tanner is not resting on his laurels, his goal is to earn his doctorate degree and return to his alma mater as a young – a very young – professor of physics. Visit the phone stores near you, if possible. You’ll need to handle the phones to be sure you can read and press the buttons with ease. Smaller phones are lightweight, but aren’t necessarily the best if you can’t see the screen or the buttons are tiny. The bigger ones, on the other hand, might be too heavy. Look into the flip phones as well, the ones that fold in half for ease of carrying in a pocket. Look for discounts. For example, you might get a discount if you’re an AARP member. They lost their way This flock of swallows was late returning to Capistrano, CA this spring. The birds seem to have gotten lost and, somehow, wound up in Redding, CA, about 600 miles north of their intended destination. When they got there they decided to stop by the home of Gary and Patti Reitemeyer, reports the Association of Mature American Citizens. The couple were away so hundreds of the birds made themselves at home, entering the Reitemeyer residence via the chimney. A neighbor saw at least 20 swallows “breaking and entering” the house and gave the Reitemeyers a heads up phone call. Gary later told a reporter from KRCR-TV: “As we pulled up, we were thinking you, know, 20 birds or so-that’s no big deal. We open the door and it’s like an Alfred Hitchcock movie. There were birds flying everywhere. I mean, it was crazy. We were ducking and dodging.”

Most pizza lovers agree: What sets pizzeria pizza apart from homemade pizza is that glorious crispy, crackly crust. That’s because commercial pizza ovens cook at temperatures between 700 F to 800 F. Yeah, well, that’s not happening in most home kitchens. But we can achieve a similar effect by using a pan made of cast iron. This will act as an oven within your oven, yielding a temperature high enough to get that irresistible crispy, yet tender crust (cue the angel chorus). Safety warning! This technique is not for the kiddies or the faint of heart. We’re going to get that cast-iron skillet screaming hot. Use caution and protect your skin and your surfaces from the heat. The ingredients I used are below, but feel free to make substitutions. Use this guideline, no more than 2 cups shredded cheese and 1 1/2 cups assorted toppings (vegetables and meats) or you risk your pizza becoming soggy and not cooking completely through the center.
CAST-IRON SKILLET PIZZA Yield: 2 to 4 servings Time: 45 minutes • 1/4 cup olive oil -– divided • 6 ounces Italian sausage, casings removed • 1/3 cup onion, thinly sliced • 1/3 cup bell peppers, green and red, thinly sliced • 1/3 cup mushrooms, thinly sliced • 12 to 16 ounces pizza dough store bought or homemade equivalent • 1 1/2 cups mozzarella cheese, shredded • 8 ounces pizza sauce purchased or recipe below • 2 tablespoons olives, sliced
1. Bring the dough to room temperature and have your ingredients sliced and ready before you begin. If you’re using my pizza sauce recipe, make that now, as well. Prepare the dough by placing on a lightly floured surface and shaping into a 14-inch round. 2. Preheat the oven to 475 F. Preheat a 12inch cast iron skillet on the stove top on medium-low heat. Add one tablespoon olive oil to the skillet and cook the sausage, breaking into crumbles. Drain on paper towel and set aside. Place the onions, peppers and mushrooms in the skillet, cooking enough to soften. Set aside. 3. Now, add 2 tablespoons olive oil, using a brush to spread the oil up the sides of the pan. Carefully place the dough round into the pan. The dough starts cooking the moment it hits the hot pan, so work quickly to avoid the bottom burning. Evenly sprinkle half the cheese over the entire crust. It’ll act as a barrier, preventing the sauce from seeping into the crust making it soggy. Dollop the sauce over the cheese layer, using the back of a spoon to spread it out. It’s OK if it’s not perfect. 4. Next, add the sausage, onion, peppers and mushrooms. Top with remaining cheese and olives. Brush any exposed crust with remaining olive oil. 5. With caution and heavy oven mitts, place the skillet into the hot oven. Bake for 12 to 14 minutes. The cheese should be bubbling and slightly browned, and the crust should be golden. 6. With extreme caution, remove skillet from the oven and place on a heat-protected surface. Run a knife around the outside edge of the pizza to prevent the cheese from sticking. Post a picture to impress your friends. Let cool for 10 minutes before devouring.
PETITE PORTION PIZZA SAUCE • 1 (8 ounce) can tomato sauce • 1 teaspoon garlic powder • 1 teaspoon Italian seasoning • 2 teaspoons sugar Drain tomato sauce through a coffee filter set in a strainer over a bowl for 15 minutes to remove excess liquid from the sauce. Into the drained sauce, stir in garlic powder, Italian seasoning and sugar. Pizza night just got a whole lot better. Drool. Eat. Repeat. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Brain Teaser Answer Nine. Two parents, six sons, and one daughter. All of them have one sister (not six sisters).
Second Chances We recently had Second Chance Month, courtesy of a presidential proclamation. Its goal was to “provide meaningful redemption and rehabilitation for formerly imprisoned persons.” It requires, per the proclamation, a holistic approach that eliminates long sentences, and provides job and education training during incarceration plus opportunities to enter the workforce after release. What that means for veterans is that the Department of Veterans Affairs is taking action to help
vets rejoin society after they’ve been in prison. In a mutual help program, the Bureau of Prisons, the Social Security Administration and VA benefits will work to ensure that the VA is notified within 30 days of release. Help for imprisoned veterans includes: • Expanding outreach into prisons to let veterans know about the services they can use and hook up with while still in prison. • A web-based program that prison staff can use to identify veterans who will need VA services when they get out. The prison staff will need the veteran’s name, Social Security number, date of birth and so on to access the site: Veterans Reentry Search Service. • Finding “justice-involved” veterans (through outreach by specialists) and encouraging them to access VA services. Those can include pre-release assessments and links to care for social, mental,
medical and employment services. To learn more about the health care services available to veterans released from prison, check the VA website at www.va.gov/homeless/ reentry.asp. Scroll down to watch videos about supporting and assisting incarcerated veterans, second chances for incarcerated veterans and suicide prevention. Further down the page are email links for the specialists in each state. Once they’re released from prison, veterans are at risk for homelessness, death from drug overdoses and suicide. Per a U.S. Sentencing Commission study, 67% of incarcerated veterans had mental health problems, and 55% had served in a combat zone. Of those, 41% reported post-traumatic stress and 67% had used illegal substances ... yet 62% had separated from the service with an honorable discharge. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Jewish Family Service of the Desert provide mental health conseling Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. Together, we can realize a Coachella Valley where anyone affected by mental illness can get the appropriate support and quality of care to help live healthy, fulfilling lives. “Unfortunately, mental illness still has a stigma attached to it preventing individuals from seeking the treatment they need. Mental Health Awareness Month is important because it brings awareness to those suffering and everyone around them including the caretakers and those who care about them. Hopefully, through education, everyone knows it is okay to ask for help. Please reach out if you or someone you know needs mental health treatment,” said Judy Monetathchi, LMFT, JFS Clinical Director. Counseling at JFS is available for the entire family. Appointments are available for both Telehealth
and In-Person counseling. JFS clinicians are there to help. Needsbased emergency financial assistance is also available. Please call 760-325-4088, or by e-mail: Counseling for new clients 760-325-4088 ext. 121, intake@jfsdesert.org. Counseling for existing clients, 760325-4088 ext. 0, appointments@ jfsdesert.org. Italian-Herb Roasted Chicken Our master roasted-chicken recipe combines dried Mediterranean herbs and garlic. • 1 whole (3 1/2-pound) chicken • 1 tbsp. olive oil or soft butter • 1/2 teaspoon dried basil • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano • 1/2 teaspoon dried rosemary • 1 clove garlic, crushed with press • 3/4 teaspoon salt • 1 1/4 teaspoon coarsely ground black pepper • 1/2 cup water 1. Preheat oven to 450 F. Remove bag with giblets and neck from chicken cavity; discard or reserve for another use. 2. In cup, mix olive oil, herbs and garlic. With fingertips, gently separate skin from meat on chicken breast. Rub herb mixture on meat under skin. Tie legs together with string. Rub chicken all over with 3/4 teaspoon salt and 1 1/4 teaspoons
coarsely ground black pepper. 3. Place chicken, breast side up, on rack in small roasting pan (13 by 9 inches). Pour 1/4 cup water into roasting pan. Roast chicken 1 hour or until juices run clear when thickest part of thigh is pierced with tip of knife and temperature on meat thermometer inserted into thickest part of thigh reaches 175 F. 4. When chicken is done, lift from roasting pan and tilt slightly to allow juices inside cavity to run into pan. Place chicken on platter. Let stand 10 minutes to allow juices to set for easier carving. 5. Remove rack from roasting pan. Skim and discard fat from pan juices. Add remaining 1/4 cup water to pan juices; cook 1 minute on medium, stirring constantly. Serve chicken with pan juices. Makes 4 main-dish servings. Each serving: About 390 calories, 23g total fat (6g saturated), 161mg cholesterol, 700mg sodium, 1g total carbohydrate, 1g dietary fiber, 41g protein. (c) 2022 King Features Syndicate, Inc.
