ancy Wilson is celebrated as a seminal musician in rock ‘n’ roll history. A guitar virtuoso from the age of 9, Wilson (and her sister Ann Wilson) have led the multi-platinum rock group, Heart, who have sold upwards of 35 million albums. Wilson is revered as an ingenious guitar player, blending elements of flamenco and classical guitar with hard rock, and she’s also a gifted vocalist as can be heard on Heart’s first Number One hit, “These Dreams.” As a songwriter, she has co-written a collection of indelible songs that has earned its way into the classic rock canon (“Magic Man,” “Crazy on You,” “Barracuda,” “Straight On”). In 2013, Heart was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Heart’s debut album, “Dreamboat Annie,” was followed by “Little Queen” in 1977 which reached number 11 on the Billboard charts. The band’s third album, “Magazine,” was released pre-emptively with unfinished tracks and was later recalled. The group’s fourth release, “Dog & Butterfly,” was written over the course of a single day and released in 1978, selling a million copies within the first month and going platinum, the band’s fourth million-selling album.

Heart’s fifth album, “Bébé le Strange,” was released on Valentine’s Day 1980. The band’s sixth album, “Private Audition,” was released in June 1982 and sold only 400,000 copies; it peaked at number 25 on Billboard. Next up was “Heart,” followed by “Bad Animals,” “Desire Walks On” and even a Christmas album. In total, Heart has released around 18 albums as a group, and in 2019, Nancy Wilson released her own solo album, “You and Me.” Wilson has also built a successful career as a film composer, including scores for the Cameron
Crowe (now her ex-husband) films “Say Anything…,” “Almost Famous,” “Vanilla Sky” and “Elizabethtown.” During an era when females in rock and roll were scarce, Nancy Wilson carved out a place for women to front rock bands and dominate on stage. Her icon status and high energy performance make this show a must-see. The concert is held on Saturday, July 16 at The Show, Agua Caliente Casino, 32250 Bob Hope Drive in Rancho Mirage. Tickets range from $25 to $60. Call 888-999-1995 or visit aguacalientecasino.com

ANSWER TO TRIVIA ON PAGE 6
• Who hasn’t wished on occasion for more hours in their day? Well, if you can wait a mere 140 million years, the average Earth day could be 25 hours long, as the planet is slowly — very slowly! — decelerating. • Mushrooms emit electrical signals to each other containing patterns similar to human speech. • Beauty masks in ancient Rome had one heck of an ingredients list, including placenta, excrement, sulfur, sheep’s wool sweat, animal urine, ground oyster shells and bile.
• In 2008, a 13-year-old boy was arrested for farting too much in school. The sheriff’s office claimed he “continually disrupted his classroom environment” with intentional flatulence. • Anatidaephobia is the fear that somewhere in the world, a duck or goose is watching you.
• Japanese sumo wrestlers are bound by strict rules even when out of the ring, governing when they sleep and eat, and how they dress and speak in public. They are not allowed to drive cars and, if they’re in the lower ranks of the sport, cannot have a phone or a girlfriend. • A duel between three people is called a truel. • The cornea of the eye is the only body part without its own blood supply. Instead, it receives oxygen directly from the air. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Starting when we reach age 50, our mailbox becomes flooded with frequent invitations to join AARP. At that age, we don’t want to hear about anything for seniors because, in our eyes, we aren’t seniors yet. We don’t even qualify for a senior discount at local stores. So maybe we don’t even look at the piles of literature and ads AARP sends. But maybe we should. There’s more to AARP than meets the eye. For a mere $16 per year, we get a whole list of benefits and information. The discounts themselves are impressive, in over a dozen categories. Want to send flowers or a gourmet fruit basket? Get a 20% discount. Traveling and need a rental car? Get a 30% discount. Save on RV insurance, prescriptions at Walmart, restaurants, hearing aids (20%), Ancestry.com (30%), Norton computer security

(25%) and much more. There is a jobs board (315 jobs in my ZIP code alone), an auto-buying program to help with dealer pricing, online games, local chapters and podcasts, a government watch...everything designed to help seniors. And then there is the AARP Bulletin monthly magazine that is sent by mail to members. If there’s one thing you don’t want to leave lying around unread, it’s this. I just picked up a recent copy and discovered three must-read articles: Identifying phone scams when you get a call, cutting the cost of online groceries and, most important of all, an article on drug interactions. Imagine my surprise to see two of my drugs listed with information about contraindications no one ever told me about. And what do they do with our membership fees? They advocate for us all over the country, especially with Social Security and Medicare. If you’re not signed up for AARP, it’s something you should consider. If in doubt, go to aarp.org and scroll down the page to see what’s new. If you have questions, call AARP at 888-687-2277 (Monday through Friday, 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. EST) (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

La Quinta’s Chúla Artisan Eatery to be featured on Food Network’s ‘Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives’ Guy Fieri’s popular Food Network show “Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives,” where the host takes cross-country road trips to discover America’s classic dining joints, will air a feature on La Quinta’s Chúla Artisan Eatery, owned by local chef Katherine Gonzalez, on Friday, July 15, and Saturday, July 16. Known for Gonzalez’s preparation of some of her mom’s traditional dishes made with the chef’s own creative spin, Chula’s is dedicated to honoring its family’s culture and highlighting the products of nearby growers. Chúla’s Mom’s Chilaquiles will be Fieri’s highlighted dish. Palm Springs Rewind film retrospective celebrates iconic directors
ANSWER ON PAGE 10
Palm Springs Rewind is a new film retrospective series this summer featuring films from three directors. The July line up could be subtitled, “Works of Director Quentin Tarantino,” with featured films to include “Pulp Fiction” (July 16) and “Kill Bill-Volumes 1 and 2” (July 23 and 30). All films will screen beginning at 8 p.m., and for those who want to grab a drink, the bar opens 90 minutes before showtime with drink specials available. The August line-up is just as scintillating, with planned
screenings of “Rushmore,” “The Royal Tenenbaums,” “Moonrise Kingdom” and “The Grand Budapest Hotel,” all master works by famed director Wes Anderson. All the filmmakers have established cult followings. Their films have received or been nominated for multiple awards and nominations, implementing innovative visual styles and cinematography. You’re in for a welcome taste of nostalgia and a chance to see how these creators have influenced subsequent generations of filmmakers.

Black Rock Art Gallery opens Land Escape Exhibition Joshua Tree National Park management is pleased to announce a new art exhibition by former Mojave National Preserve Artist in Residence, Natalie Larsen. Land Escape is a series of works on paper about her 2019 residency. Through intricate and layered drawings, Larsen creates a rich depiction of the Mojave Desert. As the descendent of Mormon pioneers, Larsen has struggled with the complex history present in the desert landscape and her inheritance of its legacy; however, she says, “when I spend time in the desert, I feel at peace.” A Pittsburg native, she still finds herself creating work about the desert and her family’s ties to its settlement. She was an artist-in-residence prior to the 2020 fires, and this
body of work is a memorial to the Mojave as it was in 2019. Spending significant time in the Cima Dome area, so many of her drawings are of places that are very different now. “It was important to me to work from a place of remembrance for what I saw in 2019… There is a genre in art called ‘Memento Mori,’ paintings and drawings that reflect on mortality… For me, these drawings serve as Momento Mori for the Mojave.” The exhibition run through August 27, at the Black Rock Art Gallery in the Black Rock Nature Center. Located at 9800 Black Rock Canyon Rd, Yucca Valley, CA 92284, the building is open weekend hours only, Friday–Monday, 8 am–4 pm. • If you want to cool your canned drinks quickly, add water to the cooler with a lot of ice, submerge all drinks under the ice line, and wait about 20 minutes. Without the water, it takes much longer. The water extends the surface contact of the ice.
• Got lots of fresh herbs from your summer garden? Hang bunches upside down in a cool place for a week or so. Crumble the leaves into small jars. You’ve made your own dried herbs. • “Want super-crunchy fries at home? Soak potato pieces in very cold water for an hour (fridge is best, or add ice often); dry and fry. Drain fries well, dust LIGHTLY with flour and quick-fry one more time for only a minute or so.” — T.C. in Idaho
Yikes! The experts say that your rubber tires will not stop lightning from striking your car, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. It’s a lesson that Mr. and Mrs. Edward Whalen learned the hard way as they were driving in a storm near Tampa, FL recently. Edward was in his truck and Michelle was behind him in her car when a bolt of lightning struck the truck and proceeded to hit her car. It was a fierce storm and it was all caught on video. A county deputy, Kristen Miceli, happened to be driving in the next lane and saw the whole thing. No one was injured.
• If you run out of bleach, add 4 tablespoons of hydrogen peroxide to a small load of white laundry. • To keep your ladder from sinking into soft sand or dirt, put each leg into a can or bucket. It creates a much larger surface area, thereby stabilizing the legs. • Be certain to use only distilled water in your iron. The water from the tap can leave mineral stains on clothing, and will kill your iron if you do it all the time. — R.E. in Louisiana (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Caregiver Reassessments Paused If you’re a family caregiver, or if you’re a veteran receiving family care services, heads up: The Department of Veterans Affairs is suspending the annual reassessments for those in the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers. At the same time, at least for now while they review the program, the VA won’t change stipends based on a reassessment nor remove anyone from the program. They will, however, continue to
do reassessments when there is a reason, such as the veteran or caregiver is asking for an increase in the stipend or if there’s a need for more personal care services. The VA also will keep making wellness visits. If you aren’t part of the program and want to be, the Program of Comprehensive Assistance for Family Caregivers (PCAFC) is for veterans who were seriously injured (or who now have a serious illness) while in active duty on or before May 7, 1975, or on or after Sept. 11, 2001, if they meet two criteria: -- Service-connected disability of 70% or more. -- Need personal care services for at least six months because of inability to perform activities of daily living or have a need for supervision, protection or instruction. Primary caregivers can receive a monthly stipend, access to CHAMPVA health care insurance
and 30 days of respite care per year for the veteran so the caregiver can take a break. Other caregiver benefits include online and in-person educational sessions, counseling, use of telehealth and techniques and skills for caring for the veteran. Apply online at www.caregiver. va.gov/support/support_benefits.asp or download VA Form 10-10CG on that same page and send it in by mail. You also can hand the form in at your local VA medical center by contacting the caregiver support coordinator. For more info, call them at 855-2603274 Monday - Friday 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Saturdays 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Do not send in any medical records with this application. They’ll ask for it later. Simple Savings on Summer Salads
When it’s hot, I barely want to eat, let alone heat up the house cooking something. So we’ve been on a salad kick lately. One drawback to having salads is the cost quickly adds up. Here are some tips to help you save some green while buying your greens. Bag the bagged salads. Read the ingredients for inspiration, then put it back on the shelf, because they cost more and go bad quickly. Skip the convenience if you want to save a buck. Buy the three pack hearts of romaine and chop them yourself. It’s easy and takes mere seconds. One heart makes two or three nice salads. Next, add the goodies they put in the prepared salads yourself. Leave the lettuce. Even better than romaine, select heartier greens like cabbage and kale. They keep longer, have more flavor, more health benefits and are usually cheaper. Bonus, if they start to wilt, you can saute them. Save on proteins. While salmon and steak make lovely salads, use chicken, beans, boiled eggs, lentils, nuts and canned fish to pack
protein onto your greens. Dress yourself. If you have delicious homemade dressings in your fridge, your chances of making a salad increase exponentially. Vinaigrettes can be as simple as three parts oil to one part vinegar. Add flavorings like mustard, herbs and spices, and experiment to your heart’s content. The recipe below is a summertime favorite. The dressing doubles as marinade for chicken. And if you grill the chicken outdoors, you get the down-home aroma of smoke without heating up your home. HONEY MUSTARD CHICKEN SALAD Yield: 4 generous servings Time: 1 hour plus marinating time For Marinade/Dressing 1/2 cup honey mustard 3 tablespoons apple cider vinegar 2 tablespoons whole-grain mustard 2 tablespoons olive oil 1 tablespoon brown sugar 1 teaspoon minced garlic 1/8 teaspoon salt Pinch black pepper 4 chicken breasts or 8 chicken thighs, boneless skinless For Salad 1/2 cup bacon, 4 strips, diced 2 boiled eggs, sliced 6-8 cups romaine lettuce, chopped
2 cups tomatoes, sliced 1 large avocado, pitted and sliced 1/2 cup corn kernels 1/4 cup red onion, diced 1. Whisk marinade ingredients together. Divide in half, reserving half in the fridge to dress the salad. Pour the remaining marinade over the chicken and refrigerate. Marinate chicken for two hours, or better, overnight. 2. The chicken can be grilled, sauteed on the stovetop or oven baked. 3. To grill, preheat to mediumhigh heat and grill for about 7 to 10 minutes on each side or until your thermometer registers 160 degrees. 4. To saute, heat a pan or skillet over medium heat with a little oil and cook in batches, until cooked through. 5. To bake, preheat oven to 375 degrees and cook for 30 minutes or until cooked through. 6. While the chicken cooks, saute the bacon and hard boil the eggs. 7. In preparation for the salad, slice chicken into strips and prepare the lettuce, tomatoes, avocado, corn and onion. Crumble the bacon and slice the eggs. 8. Whisk 1 tablespoon of water into the remaining dressing and drizzle over the salad. It’s potent, so add to taste. Arrange salad artistically or just plop it all in a big bowl and have at it.
