ust like you, we’re anxiously awaiting live theatre. And, until that happens, two talented actors have come together to present more than 15 characters in a zany musical about two guys who believe theatre can save their town.

That sounds about right, doesn’t it?

Before, after or during your Thanksgiving Day celebration, tune-in to a One-Day Only Streaming Production of “Popcorn Falls,” starring Anthony Nannini and Nicholas Sloan. The sleepy town of Popcorn Falls is forced into bankruptcy when a neighboring town threatens to turn it into a sewage treatment plant. The hope of saving the town lies in the dreams of opening a live theatre there. Writer James Hindman spins a world of farce, love and desperation, with musical compositions by Jeffrey Lodin, which proves that art can save the world!

Beyond Sloan’s first performance in a wild west stunt show in 1999, he’s been seen as Jesus in “Jesus Christ Superstar” at Performance Riverside, Enjolras in “Les Misérables” at The Palm Canyon Theatre, Sky in “Mamma Mia” at The Moonlight Amphitheatre, Riff in “West Side Story” at Riverside Repertory, and many others.

With most of us spending most of our days at home, it’s time for us to take advantage of the internet.

Here are some resources that can enrich our lives.

Inquire at the local senior center about any exercise classes online.

Some classes will be live on Zoom and others will be videos that the instructors record and post on the center’s website. If they’re not hosting any classes, search online for “seniors exercise at home” and look for some that are produced by other senior centers.

Virtual art classes can open up new areas of interest and reveal talents you didn’t know you had.

Better yet, if you’re a beginner or are exploring a new art medium, look for videos that you can review over and over. Look online for free art classes online for seniors.

Exercise and art aren’t the only free classes you’ll find online.

Yoga and tai chi, sewing, baking and cake decorating, creative writing, a new language — if it

can be done online, there’s a class for it somewhere.

And don’t forget Class Central (www.classcentral.com). Check the website for a list of MOOCS (massive open online courses).

There 15,000 different free and low-cost classes in its searchable database from colleges and universities around the world. Imagine taking a philosophy course from the University of Edinburgh or Introduction to Classical Music via Yale University. (I put art history into its search box and got back 165 results.) Read the details for any class you’re considering.

It will tell you if the class is selfpaced, whether it’s free to audit, the class level and how much time per week you can expect to spend on the work, as well as reviews from other students.

Read With Me Program helping students, seeking volunteers Distance learning is not getting in the way of a 16-year-old tutoring organization to keep doing what organizers know is needed to help valley students. Read With Me Volunteer Programs did a major pivot this year, when the pandemic led to distance learning, and volunteers continued tutoring students – virtually. The Auen Foundation is supporting the program with a $30,000 grant to train volunteers, most of whom are people over 55.

“The schools we work in have a high incidence of children living in homes where English is not spoken. These children have lost a great deal of academic progress since last March and need additional tutoring more than ever,” said Roberta Klein, Founder of Read With Me, which normally transports trained volunteer tutors to schools in the east valley.

“We have demonstrated that poorly achieving students that have a volunteer tutor make twice as much academic progress as the rest of the students in school.”

Me had about 750 volunteers, many of whom are snowbirds.

When Read With Me volunteers were no longer able to tutor at school sites, the organization worked with Coachella Valley Unified School District to develop an effective, virtual tutoring program. Read With Me established three training locations – at the Berger Charitable Center, Southwest Church and Hope Lutheran Church – to train volunteers how to use Zoom and help students with reading and English language skills virtually. Volunteers can also train virtually, if they live outside the valley or are not comfortable coming to the socially distanced, in-person training.

Flying rats?

In New York City they call them “flying rats” because they are considered a nuisance but in Belgium they train pigeons to race and the best of the breed can fetch big bucks. Last year a Belgian pigeon, by the name of Armando, was sold at auction for more than $1.4 million. And now another Belgian pigeon, New Kim, has been auctioned off for the tidy sum of

$1.89 million, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. They’ve been breeding pigeons for racing for more than 200 years in Belgium and they are, obviously, good at it.

Palm Desert’s Certified Farmers Market gets new home on San Pablo Palm Desert’s Certified Farmers’ Market will have a fresh, new address starting next month. Beginning on Wednesday, December 2, the popular weekly market will move from its existing location in Entrada del Paseo to debut at its new location on San Pablo Avenue.

A celebratory and socially distanced ribbon cutting will take place at 8 a.m. with the first 250 shoppers receiving Unite Palm Desert reusable grocery bags from the City of Palm Desert booth.

The Market’s move to San Pablo capitalizes on the street’s recently reimagined pedestrian and bicycle friendly design and will begin to realize the centrally located venue’s potential as a new outdoor community event space.

San Pablo will be closed between Alessandro Drive and San Gorgonio Way every Wednesday morning for the market, which

runs from 8 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., October through April.

A perennial favorite, Palm Desert’s Certified Farmers’ Market gives residents and visitors an opportunity to shop for farm fresh produce and other artisanal products. TURKEY SALAD

Turkey Salad made from Thanksgiving leftovers Hosting the Thanksgiving feast usually means a variety of leftovers tucked away in the refrigerator for building piled-high sandwiches. If you’re ambitious, you might even make soup or a casserole with the good and seasoned food.

Here’s another tasty option that will please your family: Make a big, savory, crunchy, nutrient-packed turkey main-dish salad, and serve it at a weekend brunch with croissants and fresh fruit on the side.

Purple Heart Phony With snow expected that afternoon, I suspected the veteran crew might not have shown up outside the coffee shop, but there they were, socially distanced around the sidewalk. And they were in the middle of a hot conversation when I stepped up.

The topic was a guy who had potentially faked his military history and worse, had claimed he was a Purple Heart recipient, this time right here at home.

“He’s in our VFW. We took him

in.”

“He needs to be brought down, if he’s a liar.”

“So, do I make the call? I’ll be calling in a favor if I do.”

The group took a vote, going around the circle. It was 100% to find out once and for all if their fellow veteran was indeed a liar and a thief.

The main guy slid a phone out of his pocket, stabbed in a number, said a few words, listened and then hung up.

I can’t repeat here his exact angry words, but the summary was: Their friend and fellow veteran had lied. He hadn’t served where he’d claimed he had, hadn’t had the MOS he’d claimed he had, and he certainly had not earned a Purple Heart.

MOS is a code that identifies the job someone has in the military. This particular veteran had

worked in supply at a small CONUS base. Unless he’d gotten a paper cut while stocking shelves, he’d never been wounded. Somewhere there was a faked DD-214.

I tossed my coffee cup in the trash and walked away, leaving the group to their collective misery while they explored just how they’d been taken in. I’d heard the story too many times. Veterans and those who’d never served claiming benefits, medals and admiration they never earned, enjoying a higher-level Priority Group at a Department of Veterans Affairs medical center, telling tall tales.
