A few months ago I escorted three very nervous elderly ladies to the food bank. By “escorted,” I mean I had to scout out the situation in advance, come back with a report (no, the food bank staff wouldn’t ask embarrassing questions about finances) and then actually take the ladies to the food bank in my car to pick up their groceries. Fast-forward a few months, and I’ve just learned that said ladies actually went to the food bank by themselves today ... and had a wonderful time. You wouldn’t think that “wonderful time” would be an apt description of a trip to a food bank, but they were delighted by the whole experience. For this pickup, the food bank did things a different way: Having received an abundance of donations from various places, this time they in-

vited their “guests” into the storage area and allowed them to pick out exactly what they wanted for their holiday meals. One of the ladies chose a small turkey, another a turkey breast to be made into sandwiches and pot pies, and the third a ham for future casseroles, knowing that they were going to split the bounty when they had holiday meals together. They negotiated their way up and down the storage area aisles, accompanied by a friendly staffer, chatting about potential recipes and collecting a wider variety of foods than each would get individually during a typical food pick-up. I’m told I will be a recipient as well: I am invited to share their meals when they carve the turkey, make the sandwiches and turn the ham into delicious casseroles as my reward for having introduced them to the joys of the food bank. The food bank is to be lauded for their largess this holiday season. They might never know just how happy they made those three ladies. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Remarkable, inspirational Baseballer Joe Musgrove recently traveled to Antarctica to celebrate his 30th birthday and to break the record for the world’s fastest pitch, according to the Guinness Book of World Records -- an 86 miles per hour fastball. Joe was accompanied by his San Diego Padre teammates and athletes from the Challenged Athletes Foundation, including 16-year old Landis Sims who’s accomplishment defies probability, reports the Associa-

tion of Mature American Citizens. Sims was born without hands or feet yet he earned the position of second baseman on his Elizabeth, IN high school varsity team. He idolizes Musgrove. As he put it in an interview with KGO-TV in San Francisco: “The first time I met Joe Musgrove, he told me, ‘Life rewards those who start.’ So I think every day, if I start going, if I start working, then I’m going to be rewarded at some point.”

New restaurants and shops headed to Palm Springs Airport Palm Springs International Airport has announced plans to double the number of restaurants and bring in more local representation with new concessions program set to begin in 2023. Palm Springs Farmer’s Market will be featured as a curator of local gourmet foods and snacks, and downtown Palm Springs Favorites Trio and El Mirasol will join the airport as well.

Amazon’s Just Walk Out shopping technology will be added to some retail locations, and a seasonal local ice cream truck will be offered along with the airport’s first DutyFree shopping experience. Palm Springs City Council approved ten-year contracts with two concessionaire companies. Paradies-Lagardere (Paradies), the current restaurant operator, was

Isn’t golf a gentleman’s sport? Who knows what they were arguing about. It had something to do with a golf game, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. Fifty-one year old Mark Curtis Wells of Biloxi, MS got into an argument with an unnamed fellow golfer and wound up biting the guy’s nose off. Biloxi’s SunHerald news reports that Wells, his victim and

other golfers had been arguing about a game played earlier that day. They took the quarrel into the parking lot where the cops found the victim with a “disfiguring facial injury.” The cops arrested Wells on a charge of felony mayhem. It cost him $5,000 to bail himself out but he will soon be facing charges that could land him up to seven years in prison.

How to Make the Best Latkes for Hanukkah

Beginning at sunset Sunday, Dec. 18, the Festival of Lights begins. The eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights, also known as Hanukkah, is celebrated by lighting the menorah, playing the game of dreidel and eating special holiday foods. Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Temple in Jerusalem after it was defiled by the Seleucids in 164 B.C. During the rededication, a miracle happened. A small quantity of oil that was sufficient only for one day continued to burn for eight days. Therefore, Hanukkah is one of the happiest Jewish holidays of the year. The roots of this holiday include liberation from oppression, religious freedom, divine miracles, and courage. Of all the traditional foods eaten on Hanukkah, the potato latke is always a favorite. This is a potato pancake fried in oil, which references the miracle of the oil in the temple. Even if you don’t celebrate Hanukkah, you’ll love having this

delicious and inexpensive recipe in your rotation. Latkes are crispy on the outside, light, soft and tender on the inside, and full of flavor. There are lots of ways to make latkes, and each family loves the ones their “bubbe” makes. I don’t want to step on any bubbe’s toes, but this recipe is a classic. Traditional toppings are applesauce and sour cream, but you can top them with many other delectable goodies. To stay somewhat traditional, try smoked salmon with sour cream and chives, or pastrami with brown mustard.

CLASSIC POTATO LATKES Yield: about 20 latkes Total Time: 1 hour • 5 large russet potatoes, peeled • 1 large onion • 1/3 cup matzah meal, cracker meal or dry breadcrumbs • 1 teaspoon kosher salt • Freshly ground black pepper • 2 eggs • 1 cup vegetable oil + more as needed Using a good old-fashioned box grater, grate the potatoes and onion together. The onion juice slows the potatoes from oxidizing and turning brown. You could use a food processor with a

grating blade, but you won’t get that beautiful rustic look of hand grating. Transfer the mixture to a clean dish towel and squeeze, then squeeze some more to wring out as much of the liquid as possible. This is the secret to crispy latkes. Place the mixture into a large bowl. Add the matzah or breadcrumbs, salt and pepper, and distribute through the potato mixture. Add the eggs and mix well. After this is mixed, transfer the mixture to a colander and place it back in the bowl. This is to keep the mixture from sitting in liquid, making sure there are no soggy latkes at the end of cooking.

Pour about 1/2 inch of the oil in a medium heavy-bottomed pan and place over mediumhigh heat. Once the oil is at 350 F (a drop of mixture placed in the pan should sizzle), drop heaping tablespoons of the mixture into the hot oil, flattening with a spatula and cooking in batches. When the edges of the latkes are brown and crispy, flip. Cook until the second side is golden brown. Transfer the latkes to a paper towel-lined plate to drain, and sprinkle with salt while still warm. Add oil as needed. Repeat, then eat! Current trends show people adding all kinds of ingredients into the latke, like sweet potato, zucchini, cilantro, cheese, apple and such. Also, some air-fry them. Although we usually like to use less oil, the symbolism of the oil is really the point of latkes for Hanukkah. Variety is fun, but for Hanukkah, it’s best to be a purist. In this holiday season, let’s say thanks a lot, for lots and lots of latkes.

Brain Teaser Answer

Two Tasks to Start the Year In a matter of weeks, we’ll have a new year when, ideally, we’ll have more control over our lives. Here are two things we can all do to start with a clean slate. Clean out your medicine cabinet. Pull out expired drugs (both prescription and over the counter) and go on a hunt for a location to drop them off. Some towns have only one drug disposal day per year, but other towns keep a machine in their police department to drop off drugs anytime.

Short.

Ask if your local Department of Veterans Affairs medical facility has disposal. Or you can go to https://apps.deadiversion.usdoj. gov/pubdispsearch to search for a controlled substance public disposal location near you. Whatever you do, don’t put them down the sink or toilet. Organize your military files and information. If the worst should suddenly happen to you, don’t add to your relatives’ grief by making them dig for your information or wonder what your final wishes would be. Here are some of the things you’ll need to gather up: • Your DD214 or service equivalent. If you don’t have one on hand, send for it. • Your birth certificate. • Your final will. If you don’t have one, now is the time to make

an appointment for January with an attorney. Call the nearest military base and ask for Legal Aid to see if you qualify for a free will. • Any life insurance policies, copies of marriage certificates and divorce decrees, and a list of all the places you served while on active duty along with the dates. Download or send away for the following: • Application for United States Flag for Burial Purposes (VA Form 27-2008)

• Claim for One Sum Payment Government Life Insurance (VA Form 29-4125e) • Application for Standard Government Headstone or Marker (VA Form 40-1330) Print out the Federal Benefits for Veterans Dependents and Survivors book or send away for it by calling the VA (800-827-1000) and add that to your stack. Once you’ve gathered all this information (a box on a closet shelf will be enough), make sure someone knows where it is. Remember: Once it’s done, it’s done. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc
