hen we were young and in good health it seldom, if ever, occurred to us that one day we would be too old to dance the night away. We were full of vim and vinegar. No one had to tell us that we needed to get more exercise; we were always in motion from the time we woke up in the morning to the time we called it a day -- sometimes in the wee small hours of the next morning. And then, one day, we realized that it was time to slow down. So we took off our dancing shoes, put on a pair of house shoes and passed the time on a comfy couch reading a book or watching TV. But, just as we began to accustom ourselves, friends, family and our doctors sounded the alarm, telling us that we needed to get more exercise. Go for a long walk, they said. Go to the gym and work out. They were right, of course: as Sir Isaac Newton put it, “A body at motion stays in motion; a body at rest stays at rest.” And, too much rest, can lead us to a final resting place. Indeed, according to the American Academy of Family Physicians ‘Exercise is an important part of nearly everyone’s everyday health, including older

adults. Experts say seniors should be as active as possible. If you are an older adult, exercise can help you live a longer, healthier life.’ We Baby Boomers tend to be nonconformist individualists, as someone once put it, and a goodly number of us may not be the type to engage in organized workouts. But we do prefer an active lifestyle. That means we like to keep busy and we like to engage in systemic activities in our daily lives -- activities that keep us on the go in ways that burn energy. So, does that count as “exercise?” The consensus is that it just might. National Academy of Sports Medicine [NASM] says “Absolutely, cleaning your house is exercise. While you may not be in a gym pumping iron or running on a treadmill, it is still ex-

ercise and requires you to work and burn more energy than being sedentary. Cleaning the house is an example of moderate intensity activity, the kind the NASM and health experts recommend that you perform daily to maximize health and fitness. Daily chores like cleaning your house, mowing the lawn, cleaning the car, shopping for food and other things are all examples of moderate exercise, which helps improve health and fitness.” As always, says the Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC], when it comes to matters of health, it’s always a good idea to consult with your healthcare provider. So rather than “guessing” that your daily chores provide the exercise you need, make a list and check it with your doctor.

The price of prescription drugs has, like everything else, inched up. In some cases, the cost has made a massive, sudden jump, and it comes as a shock when you check out at the pharmacy. But there are ways around this horrible surprise. I recently discovered a way to save a lot of money ($80 on a 90-day prescription) by doing two things: I changed pharmacies, and I started using GoodRx. Here’s how: Go to the GoodRx website (goodrx.com) and put in your ZIP code so that all the local pharmacies show up. Enter the name of the drug you take, as well as the dose and number of pills. See what each pharmacy charges using GoodRx. They will vary widely. Boy, did I get a shock. It took me all of two minutes to call a new pharmacy and ask them to have the prescription transferred. Then I printed out the GoodRx coupon showing the pharmacy name, the drug and dose, the price

and so on. I took that to the pharmacy and voila! Eighty dollars saved. Here are a few other ideas if GoodRx isn’t going to work for you: • Ask your doctor if a generic would be just as good, or if another drug would work just as well. • Find out if you qualify for the Extra Help program to pay for your drugs by calling Social Security at 1-800-772-1213, or read the information at www.ssa.gov/ pubs/EN-05-10508.pdf. • See if you qualify for the Pharmaceutical Assistance Program. (www.medicare.gov/plan-compare/#/pharmaceutical-assistance-program) • Get a different Medicare drug plan more in line with the drugs you take (www.medicare.gov/ plan-compare). One Note You can’t use GoodRx along with a deductible from Medicare or Medicaid, but you can use it instead of those. Beware whether you’ll reach your annual deductible if you don’t use a Medicare drug plan or if you’re in the doughnut hole (cover gap) already. (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

Supermom Halima Cissé knew she would be giving birth to a goodly number of babies when her time came. In fact, says the Association of Mature American Citizens, the doctors told her she could count on septuplets, perhaps even, octuplets as she went into labor. Close but no cigar! She’s the first known mother in the world to have nonuplets -- that’s nine babies in one fell swoop! It hap-

pened last year, but it was announced just recently. Halima hails from the Republic of Mali in West Africa but spent the first year with her newborns in Morocco where she gave birth. It was a precautionary stay. What did Halima have to say? “I hope God blesses everyone who doesn’t yet have children, that they can have what we, the parents of nonuplets, currently have.”

Southwest Airlines continues to grow at Palm Springs International Airport and has announced yet another nonstop route, adding daily yearround service to San Jose from Palm Springs. Southwest’s new San Jose service starts on Sunday, November 6, 2022, and will operate once daily on one of their 737 family aircraft. With this new route, Southwest offers nonstop service to nine airports from Palm Springs. Six routes, including San Jose, operate on a year-round basis and three operate on a seasonal basis. “Our new daily service to San Jose brings a third northern California airport with nonstop service for our Palm Springs Customers,” said Adam Decaire, Vice President of Network Planning, Southwest Airlines. “This new link connects the Peninsula and Coachella Valley with the time savings, value, and Hospitality that only the People of Southwest can deliver, and underscores the kind of investment in California air travel that’s made Southwest the largest carrier within the Golden State for two decades and counting.” “We’re thrilled to see the continued investment in our community by Southwest,” said

Lisa Middleton, Mayor of Palm Springs. “Since their arrival we’ve seen our airport set new passenger records, add more and more nonstop options, and we now have more summer service than ever before. I want to thank Southwest for continuing to grow at PSP.” Southwest first landed at Palm Springs International Airport on November 15, 2020, and they have continued to grow ever since. Their most recent announcement, the addition of a second daily round trip flight to Las Vegas, launches next month. Visit flyPSP.com to view all routes and airlines available at Palm Springs International Airport.

Friends help friends keep cool Now that summer is here please remember these tips to take care of your pet when it is hot. EXERCISE pets in the very early morning or late night hours to minimize the risk of heat stroke. Anytime the temperature goes over 90 degrees, there is a risk of heat stroke. PROTECT THEIR PAWS before walking your pet outdoors, test the temperature of the pavement with the back of your hand. If you can’t comfortably touch the pavement for 10 seconds, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws. NEVER LEAVE A PET IN A CAR even with

the windows cracked! Temperatures inside a car can easily soar to deadly levels in a matter of minutes. Not only is leaving a pet in a hot car extremely dangerous, IT’S AGAINST THE LAW and can be prosecuted in the City of Palm Springs. Above all, remain vigilant. Symptoms of heat-related illness come on suddenly and are always a veterinary emergency. But, by being aware and taking action to keep your pet cool, you can safely enjoy all the desert has to offer with your fur babies this summer!

She sought freedom Her name is Happy and she was allegedly being held against her wishes, according to the Association of Mature American Citizens. But the New York Court of Appeals ruled that she has no right to a writ of habeas corpus in order to seek her freedom simply because Happy is an elephant who is being detained in the Bronx Zoo. The petition was filed by the Nonhuman Rights Project, which sought to release her after 50 years in “captivity” at the zoo so that she can spend her remaining years in an elephant sanctuary. Five judges ruled against Happy, but two objected saying that though she may be an elephant she had a right to “freedom.”

The Coachella Valley Firebirds, the 32nd AHL team debuting in Fall 2022 and the affiliate of the NHL Seattle Kraken, announced the hiring of Dan Bylsma as its first head coach in team history. Bylsma comes from the Charlotte Checkers, home of the defending Calder Cup Champions where he was named assistant coach by the Seattle Kraken August 2021. Bylsma commented, “I am honored and excited to be joining the Coachella Valley Firebirds as the first coach in team history. This is a unique opportunity to continue collaborating with the Seattle Kraken in building a championship organization from the desert floor up. I look forward to curating the product on the ice to be a proud representation of the people, spirit and passion that define the Coachella Valley.” Bylsma has eight seasons as an NHL head coach under his belt – a six-season run in Pittsburgh from 2008-2014 that saw him capture a Stanley Cup in 2009 and a Jack Adams Award in 2011 as the league’s most outstanding coach, followed

by a pair of seasons in Buffalo from 2015-2017. In June 2013, Bylsma was appointed head coach of the United States Olympic Hockey Team for the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia. A month before coaching at the Winter Olympics, Bylsma became the winningest coach in Penguins history with 233 wins. Bylsma began his coaching career in the AHL in 2004-05, spending three seasons as an assistant coach for Cincinnati and Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, and one year with the NHL’s New York Islanders before earning his first head coaching position with the AHL Penguins in 2008-09. As a player, Bylsma logged 429 NHL games over nine seasons as a winger with Los Angeles and Anaheim. The Michigan native also spent time in the AHL, IHL and ECHL over his career, giving him a total of 840 pro games to his credit. The puck will drop for the team’s inaugural season at Acrisure Arena, the newest world-class concert and sports venue designed specifically for the Coachella Valley, in December 2022.

Age is no deterrent when it comes to academics Students often experience some jitters on the first day of school, but the prospect of such nervousness doesn’t appear to be too great a deterrent for students 60 and older. Officials at Toronto’s York University estimated they had around 430 students aged 60 and older in undergraduate and graduate programs in 2021. Increased enrollment among people at or nearing what is often considered

retirement age could be a reflection of what the AARP notes has been an increase in continuing education courses at many colleges and universities. Such courses may be offered to individuals of a certain age at reduced tuition. They also can help workers over 50 learn new skills that can benefit them in an ever-adapting professional landscape that increasingly relies on technologies that may

not have been around when older professionals attended college and began their careers. In addition, the AARP reports that individuals interested in going back to school for personal enrichment, as opposed to achieve an advanced degree, may be able to audit classes for free. In such instances, older adults often do not receive academic credit but still get to benefit from taking the class.

Avocado Tuna Stack Is Perfect Summer Meal PICO DE GALLO

With food prices rising across the board, it’s nice to see that (so far) the price of canned tuna remains affordable. In fact, I bet you have a can or two in your pantry right now. Tuna is incredibly versatile, from sandwiches and creamy casseroles to zesty salads. Plus, it’s packed full of heart-healthy omega-3 fatty acids, high-quality protein, selenium and vitamin D. However, not all tuna is created equal. There is a huge range in product quality available at the market. Between sustainability, nutrition and health, there’s a lot to consider before stocking up on tuna. It’s hard at first glance to determine which tuna brands are doing their part in responsible fishing and environmental practices because language on labels and company websites can be misleading. A quick online search can help find which brands are observing sustainability, as well as ethical and fair-trade practices. Resources like the Monterey Bay Aquarium Seafood Watch Site or Greenpeace’s canned tuna report are great places to start making informed choices with canned fish. Spoiler alert -- just because a brand is popular doesn’t make it responsible. Please make the best choice you can, when choosing your can. Now, how about a deliciously easy, no-cook recipe that’s perfect for a warm summer evening? We’re dressing up ordinary canned tuna into a zesty flavorful dish with a Latin flair by adding pico de gallo and avocado in colorful layers. It’s almost too pretty to eat. Almost. This composed salad is a perfect light lunch or dinner, or a gorgeous appetizer for your next party. Serve with tortilla chips for extra crunch. I used the tuna can as a mold to shape the salad, but you

• 1/2 cup tomatoes, diced • 1/2 cup white onion, diced • 1/4 cup cilantro, chopped • 1 small jalapeno pepper; cored, seeded, minced • 1 lime juiced and zested

could use food molds or a biscuit cutter. Alternatively, you could simply layer in small glass bowls.

AVOCADO TUNA STACK Yield: 2 servings Time: 10 minutes • 1 (5 to 7 ounce) can albacore tuna in water, drained • 1 1/2 tablespoons mayonnaise • 1/4 cup celery, minced • 1 tablespoon green onion, minced • 1 tablespoon fresh cilantro, minced • 2 1/2 tablespoons lime juice, divided • 1 large, or 2 medium avocados • 1/8 teaspoon salt • 1 cup pico de gallo (purchased or recipe below) • Tortilla chips 1. Prepare the pico de gallo if not using purchased. Drain the tuna, reserving the can to use as a mold for the salad if desired. 2. In a bowl, mix tuna, mayonnaise, celery, green onion, cilantro and 1 1/2 tablespoons lime juice. Add a pinch of salt, and stir it all together. 3. Peel and dice the avocado then place in a bowl with the remaining tablespoon lime juice, add a pinch of salt and stir. 4. If using the can as a mold, rinse and dry the can, and spray with cooking spray. Line the inside of the can with plastic wrap and spray that, too. Place half the tuna in the bottom of the can and gently press down. Next, layer with half of the avocado.

5. Place your serving plate over the can and flip them both over. Carefully remove can and plastic wrap. Top it with a mound of pico de gallo. Repeat for second serving. Serve with tortilla chips.

Combine everything in a bowl. Refrigerate to allow flavors to combine. If the Latin flair doesn’t light your fire, replace cilantro with parsley and substitute 1 cup fresh ripe tomato for the pico de gallo. Enjoy! (c) 2022 King Features Synd., Inc.

The early years of midlife are a hectic time for many people. Around the time many people reach their late 30s and early 40s, they’re balancing the responsibilities of a career and a family. But as people enter their 50s, some of those responsibilities tend to be less significant, leaving more time for recreational pursuits. Hobbies and other pursuits outside of work are often more fun when enjoyed with friends. People over 50 undoubtedly recognize that it’s not always so easy to make new friends, even though it’s undeniably beneficial to have supportive relationships into your golden years. A 2017 study from researchers at Michigan State University found that valuing friendships was a stronger predictor of health and happiness among older adults than valuing family. Those results align with an earlier Australian study that found Australians age 70 or older tended to live significantly longer if they had more strong friendships. Making friends after 50 might not be as simple as it was during your school days, but these strategies can help men and women in midlife build new friendships. • Identify your interests. Fiftysomethings who have spent

the last couple of decades building a career and raising a family can give some serious thought to their interests outside of work or passions they hope to pursue now that they have more time to commit to such pursuits. The more interested you are in a given activity, the more likely you are to stick with it. And the longer you stick with something, the more likely you are to meet likeminded individuals (i.e., future friends) willing to make similar commitments. • Utilize social media. In years past, men and women over 50 may not have had any readily available tools to reach out and connect with new people. Social media has made it much easier to build such connections. Even the most obscure passions likely have a social media group of locals devoted to them, and these

groups can be great ways to meet new people. A local runner’s club may have its own social media accounts, and local governments and community groups often share information about sports leagues and other groups via social media. • Sign up for group outings. Communities often sponsor group outings to museums, the theater, sporting events, and other day trips. Signing up for a bus trip to a local museum presents a great opportunity to meet people who share your interests, providing the potential to build lasting friendships built on a foundation of shared interests. • Broaden your horizons. Just because you’re in your 50s doesn’t mean your friends have to be. Don’t hesitate to invite younger or older acquaintances and colleagues over for dinner or on weekend excursions. Friends come in all shapes, sizes and ages, so you could be missing out if you’re not willing to extend a hand in friendship to people of different ages and backgrounds. Making friends after 50 can be challenging. However, various strategies can help men and women over 50 connect with new people.

Step Up to Help Your Fellow Vets What are you doing this summer? If you have spare hours or days, consider stepping up to help your fellow veterans. Stand Downs are a good place to start. Stand Downs were started in California in 1988 by two veterans who saw the great need for services to homeless veterans. Over the years, the number of events and the veterans served has grown to include help from government agencies, veteran service organizations, groups and individual

volunteers all across the county. The need is so great that many locations see hundreds of veterans lined up outside the door before they even open on the first day. The list of help provided at each Stand Down can depend on the location and the length of the event (usually one to three days), but typically includes health screenings, clothing, showers and haircuts, food, legal advice, dental and eye-care services, mental health counseling, substance treatment referral, employment help, benefits counseling (both Department of Veterans Affairs and others, such as Social Security), housing referral and more. The schedule of Stand Downs in 2022, whether you need services or want to help, can be seen at www.va.gov/homeless/events. asp. Keep an eye on that page be-

cause new events can be added at any time. Another page to watch is the National Coalition for Homeless Veterans (nchv.org/currentstand-downs). Or you can call your local VA medical facility and ask what’s scheduled for your area. Best bet is to call them anyway and ask if the event is still planned due to COVID playing havoc with scheduling. Ask about transportation, if you need it or can offer it. Sometimes an event will send a vehicle around to pick up veterans who have no other way to get to their local Stand Down. If you’re a veteran in crisis (either homeless or about to be) and can’t wait for a Stand Down, call the National Call Center for Homeless Veterans: 1-877-424-3838. ARIES (March 21 to April 19) Be prepared to face some challenges stirred up by an envious colleague. Your best defense is the Arian’s innate honesty. Stick with the truth, and you’ll come out ahead. TAURUS (April 20 to May 20) Your sensitivity to the needs of others is admirable. But be careful to avoid those who would take unfair advantage of your good nature, especially where money is involved.

LIBRA (September 23 to October 22) Your understanding helps a colleague get through a difficult period. Although you didn’t do it for a reward, be assured that your actions will be repaid down the line. SCORPIO (October 23 to November 21) You score some high marks in the workplace, which will count in your favor when you face the possibility of changing direction on your current career path. SAGITTARIUS (November 22 to December 21) Your goal lies straight ahead. Stay focused on it and avoid distractions that could throw off your aim and cause potentially detrimental delays.

GEMINI (May 21 to June 20) Having an optimistic attitude is fine, as far as it goes. But don’t be lulled into a false sense of confidence. There still are problems to deal with before you can totally relax.

CAPRICORN (December 22 to January 19) Keep that burst of exuberance in check and resist pushing through your new project before it’s ready. In your personal life, a family member again needs help.

CANCER (June 21 to July 22) You might feel somewhat “crabby,” as you fuss over plans that don’t seem to work out. Maybe you’re trying too hard. Ease up and let things happen without forcing them.

AQUARIUS (January 20 to February 18) Paying attention to your work is important this week. But so are your relationships with those special people in your life. Make time for them as well.

LEO (July 23 to August 22) Heed that keen Leonine instinct. It’s trying to tell you to delay making a decision until you’re sure there are no hidden problems that could cause trouble later on. VIRGO (August 23 to September 22) This is a good time to reach out to those who might be nursing hurt feelings over recent events. Best advice: Ignore any pettiness that could delay the healing process.

PISCES (February 19 to March 20) Good news. Someone is about to repay a long-standing debt. But be warned. That same someone could try to charm you into lending it back unless you say no and mean it. BORN THIS WEEK: You are sensitive to matters that involve your home and family. You would make a fine family-court judge or social worker. (c) 2022 King Features Syndicate, Inc.
