This is that time of year, again, when we need to make decisions about Medicare plans. From Oct. 15 to Dec. 7, we are eligible to compare our coverage between the original Medicare, Advantage plans and the Part D drug plans in open enrollment. They change every year, and we need to know how those changes will impact us. To compare plans, go online to Medicare.gov and click on Preview 2022 Health & Drug Plans. Click on the plans you’d like to see and enter your ZIP code. If you want to compare drug costs, enter that data as well. Have pen and paper on hand and do the math. While it’s said that the average Advantage plan will come down $2, the average drug plan will go up that much. Beware the deductibles. If you have an Advantage plan and think you want to continue it, read the fine print. If you’re used to having benefits for glasses, gym membership or other

How switching the clocks can affect your health

ANSWER ON PAGE 10

ANSWER ON PAGE 10

ANSWER ON PAGE 10

Much of the world adjusts their clocks each spring and fall. In the fall, clocks are fixed on standard time, while in the spring they’re moved forward one hour to daylight saving time, or DST. The rationale behind DST has long been based on energy savings, as the demand for electricity to light homes is related to the times when people go to bed at night and rise in the morning. Studies conducted by the U.S. Department of Transportation in 1975 determined that moving clocks ahead one hour could save a small amount of energy each day. In New Zealand, power companies registered a 3.5 percent decrease in usage when daylight savings starts. Even though the energy savings associated with DST can be significant, some suggest those savings come at the expense of human health. Research suggests that a one-hour time change twice a year can significantly throw off humans’ internal clocks. A report conducted by the Massachusetts Legislature in the summer of 2016 found that people lose a significant amount of sleep in the days following DST, which can lead to an increase in both traffic fatalities and on-the-job injuries. Disrupted sleep cycles can leave

people restless and coping with anxiety. A 2012 study published in the Journal of Applied Psychology found shifts related to DST led to killing time on the internet and other “loafing” around from lack of energy and motivation. Finnish researchers analyzed more than 10 years of stroke data and its relation to DST. The overall rate of ischemic stroke increased by 8 percent in the first two days after transitioning to DST. Similarly, other issues arise when clocks are switched back to standard time in the fall. Danish researchers found the rate of people seeking care for depression rose for up to 10 weeks after clocks were turned back. Various petitions have been created to urge legislators to maintain DST all year long. The United Kingdom-based Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents says doing so will reduce road deaths currently caused by darker evenings in autumn and winter. Keeping the time consistent can help avoid body clock resets, may prevent accidents and could increase productivity in the evening hours when the autumn arrives. Only time will tell if turning the clocks back and moving them forward will become a relic of the past.

Try Italian cheesecake for a great holiday dessert this recipe for “Torta Dolce di Ricotta” from Daniel Paterna’s “Feast of the Seven Fishes: A Brooklyn Italian’s Recipes Celebrating Food & Family” (Powerhouse Books). Torta Dolce di Ricotta Serves 10 to 12 After a delicious holiday meal, there’s a good chance guests will be looking forward to a sweet treat. Many families have their go-to desserts on special occasions, but holiday meals can be made even more memorable, and flavorful, by taking a chance on new recipes. A decadent cheesecake is on the menu in many Italian American families, who may dive in after enjoying a bowl of fruit, fennel and chestnuts. Italian cheesecake does not typically contain the cream cheese or graham cracker crust found in many commercial cheesecakes. Rather, Italian cheesecakes are full of citrus flavor and made with modified pie crust. Dig into

Crust • 2 cups all-purpose flour, plus extra to dust board and pan • 3⁄4 cup sugar • Zest of one lemon • 1⁄2 cup unsalted butter, softened, plus extra to grease the pan • 2 large eggs Filling • 8 large eggs • 3 pounds ricotta cheese, drained of excess water • 2 teaspoons vanilla • 11⁄2 cups sugar • Zest of 2 oranges • Juice of 1 orange • Juice of 1 lemon • 1⁄4 cup candied pear, chopped (optional)

To make the crust, place the flour, sugar, and zest on a pastry board or clean, dry, flat surface. Mix thoroughly to combine. Add the butter and work it into the dry ingredients. Gather the mixture into a round and create a well in the center. Drop eggs into the well, beat with a fork while gathering the dry mixture, then knead once the dough completely forms. Refrigerate for 30 minutes. Preheat the oven to 350 F. Butter and flour a 10-inch springform baking pan. Set aside. Meanwhile, to prepare the filling, combine the eggs, ricotta cheese, vanilla, sugar, orange zest, orange juice, lemon juice, and candied pear (if using) in a large mixing bowl. Mix thoroughly and set aside. After the 30 minutes, remove the dough from the refrigerator and place it on a large board or clean, dry, flat surface, lightly dusted with flour. Using a floured

rolling pin, roll the dough out into a large circle, approximately 14 inches in diameter. Now roll the dough over the rolling pin and carefully unwind it over the baking pan, gently easing it to fit evenly in the bottom and up the sides of the pan. Pour or spoon the filling mixture into the crust, leaving about 1⁄4 inch below the rim of the pan. Place the pan in a preheated oven and bake for 1 hour and 45 minutes, until the center is slightly firm. Cool for at least 2 hours. Author’s note: I have left it unrefrigerated overnight when I have baked it the night before to save time. Carefully run a plastic knife or rigid spatula around the sides of the pan to remove it, so that no crust is pulled away when you release the spring of the pan. Serve at room temperature.

Have compassion for lonely elders, there are a lot of them out there and they need your help By John Grimaldi One man’s agony: “I am 77 years old. I was happily married for 55 years but I lost my wife a year and a half ago. No, she didn’t die. In fact, she is in great physical health—except for her Alzheimer’s Disease. She is in a Memory Care Facility. I see her a couple of times each week. Her confinement and my isolation have left me devastated. I love her and wake up each and every morning sad and abandoned.” It’s not easy growing old and alone, no matter the circumstances. And, while that man’s situation is particularly difficult, a growing number of seniors will be condemned to spend the winter of life in solitude in the coming years. The Association of Mature American Citizens [AMAC] cites a report produced by the Joint Center for Housing Studies at Harvard University, which reports that “By 2038, there will be 17.5 million households in their 80s and over, more than double the 8.1 million in 2018. These households will also constitute an increasingly larger share of all US households, doubling from 6 percent in 2018 to 12 percent in 2038. As we note in our recent report, Housing America’s Older Adults 2019, the majority of these households will be made up of just a single person.” And, says AMAC, a growing number of those “singles” will be senior citizens. “Seniors who live alone in America are increasing with each passing year and, currently, nearly a third of men and women 65 years of age or older live alone. The Census Bureau reports that more than 12 million aging seniors live in alone-- more than 28% percent of folks over 65 years. And, interestingly, they do so because they want it that way.” The Merck Manual, a comprehensive medical resource for the past 122 years, “almost 90% of older people living alone express a keen desire to maintain their in-

dependence. Many fear being too dependent on others and, despite the loneliness, want to continue to live alone.” Nonetheless, the Manual points out that in order to remain independent they need to live healthy lives and engage in social activities. But the reality is that not only has isolation impacted their quality of life, 12% of seniors who live by themselves say they have difficulty making ends meet, not even enough money to deal with basic expenses. And their loneliness, in too many cases, has been increased by the COVID pandemic and is poised to become especially painful as the holiday season grows near. But friends, family and caring neighbors can help alleviate their pain, according to the National Council on Aging. Here’s how: • With the holiday season fast approaching it’s easy for them to feel even more alone than at other times. So, get them involved, help them to make celebration preparations. Keep them encouraged and hopeful by conversing with them in person and/or on the phone to make them feel that you care. • Offer to help them to get out and about and go with them for moral and engaging supp[ort. • Encourage them to socialize, perhaps convincing them to take adult education classes or to take up a hobby. It’s never too late in life for such activities. And, by all means, keep them on your list of people to call and/or visit on a regular basis and help them feel wanted.

Here’s How to Find Where Vet Is Buried The Veterans Legacy Memorial website has been expanded by 500,000 names at 93 veterans cemeteries across the country. This is in addition to the 4 million names already there at 155 cemeteries. The VLM is a digital platform and repository for information on veterans buried in those cemeteries. Friends and family can add biographies, photos, documents and other information to the

listing for each veteran as a way of paying tribute. So far, 22,000 friends and families have added information to their veteran’s profile page. For those of us who live far from the cemeteries where our veterans are buried, being able to add to a legacy page helps. For me, my family is only partially covered at this point. My grandfather at Fort Sam is in the database. Another relative at Riverside is in the database. Three others aren’t, including my parents at Arlington National. They are, however, in ANC’s website, although there is no way to add photos (except for the photo of the marker that is already there) or stories or biographies. Perhaps Arlington will be among those added in the half-million new names. Eventually the proj-

ect intends to cover veterans buried in state and local cemeteries, as well as private cemeteries. To look for your veteran, go to www.vlm.cem.va.gov and put in the name -- first name last name, no comma. Click on the FAQ for more information. To find a veteran at Arlington National, go to www.arlingtoncemetery.mil. If your veteran is listed in the Veterans Legacy Memorial, contribute to the profile. Pictures are a great addition, as is bio information and personal stories. As a side note, Wreaths Across America will be on Saturday, Dec. 18, 2021.
