ANA Inspiration returns

he 2020 ANA Inspiration will see eight of the world’s top ten players gather at Mission Hills Country Club, Rancho Mirage, California from September 10 – 13, marking the strongest field gathered globally since COVID-19 stopped play.

Along with four of the world’s top five, there are 17 players in the world’s top 25 and seven past champions in the field.

World No.2 Danielle Kang and World No.3 Nelly Korda head a home challenge of 41 US players competing for the 49th edition of this historic Major tournament.

World No.4 Sung Hyun Park and World No.5 Sei Young Kim are making their 2020 Major debut having not travelled to the UK for the AIG Women’s Open, while former Champion Inbee Park is the third top ten ranked Korean in the 106 player line up with the 2019 Champion Jin Young Ko choosing not to travel this year.

Sung Hyun Park commented: “I am really looking forward to playing in my first LPGA Major of the year. It has been an uncertain time, but I always knew I wanted to return to the USA for the ANA Inspiration! It is one of the best events of the year and although I am really going to miss all the amazing ANA Inspiration fans this year, I am really looking forward to seeing all my friends on the LPGA Tour having spent so much time away.”

There are 20 Major Champions with 24 Major titles, 30 Solheim Cup players with over 90 appearances between them and 22 nationalities represented this year.

Continuing the tradition of giving the world’s best amateurs invaluable Major experience, there are six amateur stand-outs invited: China’s Lei Ye, Texan Kaitlyn Papp, Australia’s Gabriela Ruffels, California’s Rose Zhang, Northern Ireland’s Olivia Mehaffey and North Carolina’s Emilia Migliaccio.

This prestigious Major, postponed from its traditional March date, will be going ahead without spectators for the 49th edition following close consultation and collaboration with partners ANA, the LPGA, the City of Rancho Mirage, Mission Hills Country Club and in consultation with the Riverside County Health Department, following the State of California Public Health Department guidelines.

Dear Paw’s Corner: I live in an area where eastern equine encephalitis and West Nile Virus are active.

On my walks, I make sure to wear plenty of bug spray to prevent being bitten by a mosquito infected with either disease. Are my dogs at risk of catching it? Can I use bug spray on their fur? -- Shellie in Worcester, Massachusetts DEAR SHELLIE: While dogs (and cats) are at risk of catching either disease, most pets recover fully, especially with veterinary treatment (which is mainly supportive, to keep them strong while their bodies fight the infection).

Humans can get seriously ill from either EEE or West Nile Virus, so I’m glad you’re using plenty of bug repellent. Mosquitoes are very active just before sunset, when most of us prefer to take our pets for walks during the hot summer months.

However, pets do not tolerate bug spray made for humans very well. (Citronella candles also can be very irritating.) They still should have some protection from mosquitoes, as these flying pests also carry diseases that can be very harmful to pets, like heartworm.

Pet-friendly repellents are available at the pet store or through your vet’s office. You can try natural repellents like lemon juice (try mixing it half-and-half with water in a spray bottle and applying to your dogs’ coat just before walking), crushed peppermint leaves, or rosemary.

Keep up with your pets’ heartworm medication and check them for ticks and fleas after each walk, too. This will reduce their risk of getting a serious illness from an outdoor pest. (c) 2020 King Features Synd., Inc

Prices on so many necessary items have gone up over the past six months.

Most worrisome is food.

Of all the grocery store price increases, beef and veal went up the most. But they’ve all gone up: bread, seafood, cereal, vegetables.

Fresh fruit, on the other hand, reportedly went down (although not at my store), as did milk (again, not at my store, which saw a ridiculous increase).

It likely won’t get better for the rest of the year.

What hasn’t gone up is our income. In fact, for those seniors who had part-time jobs to supplement Social Security, incomes have gone down because of the loss of those jobs. Yes, many of us got that $1,200 stimulus check ... how many months ago?

For so many of us, the time has come to admit that we need help.

It’s not easy, but it’s really not giving up any independence. There are many organizations and groups out there giving away food. Have you seen the lines of cars waiting for food pickups? The trunks of those vehicles get loaded with bags and boxes of food, gallons of milk, sacks of potatoes, frozen meat and fresh bakery goods. Other groups focus on seniors and deliver individual boxes of food to the door.

Don’t jeopardize your health because of lack of food. Pick up the phone, make calls. Find out where the free or low-cost food is in your area. Call the senior center, all the churches, the food pantry and your state’s National Council on Aging (www.ncoa.org). Get on the internet and look for seniors dining sites and Meals on Wheels, senior food boxes, Commodity Supplemental Food Program and “free food for seniors in (your state).”

1. Heat grill to medium-high.

Clean and lightly oil the grill.

Grilled Chicken with Nectarines and Cucumber Succulent grilled chicken gets jazzed up with an array of summer produce, like juicy nectarines, crisp cucumber and sweet fresh corn.

• 3 tablespoons olive oil • 1 tablespoon white wine vinegar • Kosher salt • Pepper • 2 ripe nectarines or peaches • 1/2 small red onion • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts • 1 small Kirby cucumber • 1/2 cup fresh corn kernels • 1/2 cup chopped fresh basil

2. In a medium bowl, whisk together 2 tablespoons oil, vinegar and 1/4 teaspoon each salt and pepper.

Add the nectarines and onion and toss to combine; set aside.

3. Rub the chicken with the remaining tablespoon oil, season with 1/2 teaspoon salt and 1/4 teaspoon pepper, and grill until cooked through or the internal temperature reaches 165 F, 4 to 6 minutes per side. Transfer to a platter.

4. Using a vegetable peeler, cut the cucumber into long, thin strips.

Decisions Made by Neighbor?

How would you like it if you were admitted to a hospital, unable to express your wishes and ask questions, and a neighbor strolled in and started making medical decisions for you?

The Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General was asked to investigate after this happened to a veteran who was hospitalized for three weeks.

The OIG determined that the neighbor had no legal authority to make medical decisions for

that patient. Medical staff didn’t try to even check the identity of the neighbor, much less his legal standing. They went through the veteran’s stuff, but didn’t look into his VA benefits records.

A mental health staffer decided the veteran could not make decisions and had delirium caused by medical origins, yet a social worker helped him sign forms.

Emergency room staff said the veteran had indicated he had family, but no one followed up ... except to contact the neighbor to come get the service dog.

Based on his agitation (my opinion: caused by pain from a urinary tract infection), they put the veteran on antipsychotic drugs and flung around a possible diagnosis of schizophrenia. The American Geriatric Society has said that the elderly shouldn’t be given antipsychotics because they cause agitation and delusions.

Even worse, the OIG discovered, the medical records “did not contain sufficient documentation of physicians’ clinical assessments to support diagnoses and treatment decisions.”

After three weeks, the neighbor “authorized withholding life-sustaining treatments” and the veteran was shipped off to hospice to die.

The OIG concluded doctors did that “without fully pursuing other diagnoses and treatment options.” The veteran died five days later — then they finally located the family.

Practice makes perfect “Golf is deceptively simple and endlessly complicated,” according to famed linksman Arnold Palmer.

Annual Tamale Festival on hold With the California Department of Health still assigning Riverside County in the “Widespread” tier for COVID-19 risk, officials at the City of Indio made the difficult decision to delay the upcoming Tamale Festival to 2021.

This year’s festival was originally scheduled for Dec. 8 and 9.

“The Tamale Festival is an extremely important part of what makes Indio so special,” said Indio Mayor Glenn Miller. “There is nothing we’d like more than to end 2020 with such a positive

celebration of our culture and history. However, we can’t risk people’s safety by bringing together such a large number of people when metrics in Riverside County have not been met.”

Indio’s 29th annual Tamale Festival is currently rescheduled for Dec. 4 and 5, 2021. However, the City continues to recognize its 90th Anniversary this year, and alternate dates and locations are being considered for a creative way to celebrate these two important events together before next winter.
