hat will you do with the precious time allotted to you in this life? See a waterfall in the desert? Yes! Let your soul breathe beneath the whispers of aspens and the songs of a thousand birds? Sounds perfect. Visit a banana museum? Why not! Explore is about just that — exploring places from the sublime to the supremely kitschy. So many new experiences are waiting for you just down the road, no matter where you are here in the desert. Art and dance, go-karts and golf, covered wagons and rejuvenation machines, history and soon even hockey … it’s all out there, and

it’s all here in this book too. These pages are absolutely brimming with places to go, but it’s more than that. It’s a breakdown of over 100 chances to change your life in maybe small but important ways. To “stuff your eyes with wonder,” as the author Ray Bradbury wrote. To cast off your troubles and cares and sink into something new and different. To take time for yourself, leave your little nest and make some memories. It may be the case that you’ve been stuck in a rut, or thinking there’s nothing much more for you to experience out here. Those days are over. Here are your next destinations. Go out and explore!

Salton Sea

Salton Sea 100-225 State Park Road, Mecca

The massive inland body of water known as the Salton Sea started as a vacation place for Hollywood stars in the 1950s. Over the years rising salinity and agricultural runoff began to deter visitors and the health of the sea declined. Now it is one of the main bird migration areas in the West and a geographical oddity. View old advertisements and posters of the sea’s heyday at the visitor center. Rangers will point you to the best birdwatching areas and other surrounding locations. Picnic tables, hiking trails, biking and kayaking are permitted.

While religion may have been the catalyst for this creation, the true inspiration, made clear by creator Leonard Knight, was pure love. Visitors can climb parts of the massive sculpture and peek into rooms, or admire the additional found art items, such as painted cars, placed around the base.
