President Mike Reynolds Celebrates 20 Years at HALL Wines

M

■ BY MELISSA VOGT ■

ike Reynolds, President of HALL Wines, is an industry veteran and all-around likable guy. This year, Reynolds is celebrating an impressive 20 years at HALL Wines. His initial role as winemaker began in 2002, but he was quickly promoted to President in 2006. “There was a sense of shared values that were absolutely clear from the very beginning with Mike,” stated Kathryn Walt Hall, proprietor of HALL Wines and WALT Wines. As she

10

reminisced about the early days with Mike, she continued, “He’s a winemaker in his heart, always. And I think that is part of the reason why he is so ideally suited to running a winery. His knowledge goes to the very core of what we do.” In his personal life, Reynolds is a Napa Valley native with deep ties to the community. He is married to a local schoolteacher, Jenny Reynolds, and they have three children together. Outside of Reynolds’ commitment to his family VERY NAPA VALLEY

and his role as president at HALL Wines, he is involved with the Young President’s Association – an association comprised of members in leadership roles who wish to better improve lives, businesses, and the world. His ethics at HALL transcend everything he does – from work to family to the community – and that’s what makes him such a valuable leader. Both as winemaker and as president, Reynolds has always been highly respected and liked by those who work with him. “Mike is incredibly knowledgeable, honest, and one of the hardest working people I know,” said Megan Gunderson, Vice President of Winemaking. “He has been a great mentor and advisor throughout my tenure with Hall Family Wines,” she said as she reflected on 17 years of working beside Reynolds. While there are many examples of Reynolds’ honesty and mentorship, nothing comes close to the past five years of support that he has extended to those who work with him. Through the significant challenges of the Atlas Fire in 2017, the Glass Fire in 2020, and the ongoing pandemic, Reynolds has shown nothing but selfless leadership, ongoing assistance, and a genuine sense of care for those around him. In 2017 and again in 2020, “a lot of our employees were evacuated,” Reynolds stated. “We were able to put them up in hotels for an extended period of time and really make sure that they were safe and had a roof over their heads.” And when COVID forced many local businesses to temporarily close their doors and lay off employees, HALL Wines retained all of its full-time SPRING/SUMMER 2022

employees with Reynolds at the helm. “We found something for everyone to do that would keep a steady paycheck in their pocket,” he explained. “We really wanted to keep people employed through those very hard times.” Undoubtedly, his concern and care for his team come from the core ethos of HALL Wines. “One of

the things that we have really tried to work on over a long period of time is having a strong culture built around doing the right thing,” Reynolds said. This much is clear through Reynolds’ actions in the face of adversity, his willingness to show up for his employees, and his commitment to always doing the right thing.

joined the team 17 years ago and “Iwas immediately impressed with

Mike’s ‘no shortcuts’ philosophy. From the vineyards, production facilities, our five tasting rooms as well as the front office, he doesn’t take the quick route. Careful thought is put into each initiative to help with our team making the highest quality wine and invest in systems that benefit future generations.

Reynolds’ authenticity and good-hearted nature overflow into every aspect of the business at HALL Wines – from how much his team respects him, to his ability to run a successful winery, to his hands-on involvement at every level. Reynolds’ storied experience includes 11 years – eight of which were as winemaker – at Schramsberg. And with one of his two degrees in winemaking and viticulture from UC Davis, it’s no surprise that his deep connection to winemaking allows him to oversee a winery with such a strong passion and commitment to quality. “One of the reasons why I was attracted to working with Craig and Kathryn Hall is that we had a shared vision that this was a long-term business. We knew we weren’t going to take shortcuts in terms of the production and development of the wines,” Reynolds said. “Wine quality is always at the core of what we do.” Under his leadership, Reynolds has guided HALL Wines to endless praise and countless high scores from world-renowned wine critics. The quality of the wines is on display through a variety of elevated experiences at the winery – most of which include high-end wine education led by experts that are certified in wine knowledge. The Ultimate Cabernet Experience, which is led by a wine educator and showcases a collection of highly rated and allocated Cabernets, is one of HALL Wines’ most popular tasting experiences. VERY NAPA VALLEY

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

A Versatile Character Reynolds’ experience in winemaking makes him an involved president when it comes to crafting the wines – he still makes one bottle of wine in the HALL collection. The same can be said for all other aspects of the business. “There isn’t a job at the winery I haven’t seen him do,” said Natalie Bell, Reynolds’ Executive Assistant, who has been working with him for 19 years. Countless tales of times he stepped in to assist in the vineyard, cellar, stockroom, or tasting bar are told by those who have worked with him. In his most authentic form, Reynolds is genuinely there to help every member of his team. “He is able to weigh in on decisions from both a winemaker point of view as well as a business point of view,” stated Vintner Jennifer Brown, Kathryn Hall’s daughter. Reynolds’ second degree is an MBA from UC Berkeley and his education and skillset make him a truly inspiring leader, and one who continually receives praise from those around him. “He is whip smart, and able to keep a lot of disparate areas of the company current in his mind and stay on top of a lot of moving parts,” Brown furthered. “We are so incredibly lucky to have him as our president.” Further testament to all of the praise from the HALL Wines team is the incredible tenure of those who work with him. It’s not often that you see other employees with longstanding careers of 15+ years alongside the same president. This speaks volumes for Reynolds. “We are a strong team,” said Kathryn Hall. “It’s a really good working relationship. And it’s more than that – it’s a personal relationship, too.” It’s clear that HALL Wines operates just as much like a family as it does a business, but that comes as no surprise from this family-owned winery who is committed to community, arts, responsibility, and entrepreneurship.

Achieving a 100-point score is the dream of many a winemaker; and, sadly, will continue to be a dream for most. By Laura Ness

14

I

t’s like standing on the top tier of the Olympic podium. Or making a hole in one. This is no small feat. There aren’t enough legitimate reviewers of wine to bend the odds in a winemaker’s favor. But there are a few storied brands that have managed to collect more than one precious perfect score, and it’s their wines that are studied and dissected, looking for those telltale signs of perfection, if they can be surmised. Much has been written about the use of numerical wine scores: whether you love them or hate them, they are here to stay, and represent a universal language for conveying wine quality. Well-known wine reviewer, Jeb Dunnuck, says his scoring system is roughly based on the High School Grading System most US students understand. It begins at 50 points and ends at 100 points. His website states: 100 to 96 – As good as it gets. These wines reach the peak of my personal scale of quality. 95 to 90 – Outstanding wines. These wines are outstanding for their type and are worth the extra effort to seek out.

VERY NAPA VALLEY

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

Jim Gordon of Wine Enthusiast remembers well the first wine to which he awarded 100 points. It was the 2016 Domaine de la Terre Rouge “Ascent” Syrah from Sierra Foothills AVA. To him, the wine exhibited the hallmarks of greatness: concentration, depth, layers, creaminess, balance, finesse and structure that can promote aging. His decision to award 100 points came down to this. “I couldn’t think of anything that the wine lacked. It seemed to fulfill every wish or expectation one could have for a Syrah, no matter where the grapes came from. In my judgment, as someone who has spent decades reviewing wines, it reached the pinnacle of quality.” At a recent wine competition, three wines out of a thousand entries were awarded 100-point scores. For the judges, these wines exhibited quintessential varietal character, impeccable balance, and lacked nothing warranting demerit. “Is there anything more you could possibly want from this Riesling ice wine?” asked Dan Berger. “How could this raspberry wine be any more mouthwatering, vivacious and luscious?” I asked. “I don’t believe there’s a thing the winemaker could have done to make this Late Harvest Vignoles any better,” said Larry Van Aalst. Perfection, like beauty, is in the eye of the beholder. But when three people easily agree they’ve tasted it, take heed. Here are four winemakers that have scored the Big 100. We asked all of them what they believe makes a 100-point wine. Did they think, “This is it!” when finalizing the blends on their winning wines? And what makes them special?

Chris Tynan has racked up an impressive number of 100-point wines. Three during his tenure at Cliff Lede, which began in 2012, and a seven more at Colgin prior to that. “The recognition is always welcome and fun, but you can’t let it change what you do or what you think of each wine,” says Tynan. “There’s always the next wine to craft and the bar gets higher and higher with each 100-point score.” Some vintages are just given to deliciousness, and offer what he calls “a plethora of exceptional raw material.” 2013, 2018 and 2019 were certainly rich with such fodder. Tynan says a great wine really grabs his attention right away. “I get the paradoxical perception of both an effortlessness expression of the vineyard and vintage, while simultaneously also sensing the precise and masterly artistry of the maker. Standing in front of a great painting or listening to a beautiful song, you can see the brushstrokes, hear the notes, but you’re joyfully lost in the numinous, otherworldly pleasure of delightful sensations.” Simply put, though, he and the team are “really just trying to ‘wow’ ourselves and make a wine that represents the best of the vineyard and vintage.” The 2018 Poetry has a rich expansive expression, full of lush red and black fruits with layers of violet, tea, and jasmine aromas, while the 2019 Poetry builds on this core with an added layer of freshness and the complex spice notes of bergamot, cardamom, and clove. ••• Being in business for 100 years has enabled the Mondavi Family to develop foundational friendship with legends like Rothschild and Marchese Frescobaldi. “I have been very fortunate to meet and work with many individuals and properties considered to be among the finest in the world,” says Winemaker Tim Mondavi. “These and many other benchmarks have clearly been important references for us. Critics are first and foremost lovers of wine and the best are aware of the great wines and properties of the world. Fortunately, our Sage Mountain Vineyard is an extraordinary site.” He credits the Sage Mountain vineyard as key to producing stellar wines like the 2018. He quips, “I said, ‘This is it!’ when we were able to secure this fabulous property in 2008 and 2009!” Being all estate has distinct advantages. “Overseeing the evolution of wines in barrel allows us to build upon our knowledge base and informs how we tend to our site for the next year. It also allows us to better reveal the nuance and complexity of the vintage. This is the strength of a completely estate-based entity.”

Winery: Continuum Estate Winemaker: Tim Mondavi Wine: 2019 Continuum 100th Harvest

The 2018 is special, but he’s equally jazzed about the subsequent vintage. “The 2019 Continuum is emotionally significant for us as it represents the 15th vintage of Continuum and our family’s 100th consecutive harvest in wine.” Mondavi describes the signature characteristics of Sage Mountain Vineyard as wild sage, bay laurel, minerality, and vibrancy. “These elements, along with the iron core of our rocky soils, are the through line of our terroir each year.” •••

Winery: Lokoya & Cardinale Winemaker: Christopher Carpenter Wines: 2001 Lokoya Mount Veeder (2011, Robert Parker) Christopher Carpenter had already scored 100 points for his 2001 Cardinale (2010, Steve Heimoff, Wine Enthusiast) when he received a 100 rating in 2011 from Robert Parker for the 2001 Lokoya Mount Veeder. “It’s huge personally and professionally and helps bring attention to the winery and justifies all the attention to detail myself and my team put into growing the grapes and making the wine,” says Carpenter. What defines a 100-point wine? “I think it’s a combination of elements. How does this wine reflect place, variety, and vintage? Is it balanced across all the factors that create the flavor: the grapes, the microbiology that carried out the various fermentations, barrels, ageing elements and the blending process? If all those things are in alignment and if that particular critic makes that connection on the particular day that they are evaluating the wine, that is when you see the 100-point score.” The financial commitment on the part of their collectors and retail partners drives him to approach every wine with “a 100-point mentality.” He admits to being his toughest critic and is always nervous when tucking a final blend into the cellar. “It comes down to having confidence and taking a leap of faith. I can’t control any of the critics, but I can control the path of excellence I demand of myself and the people and processes with which I work.” ••• 18

Winery: Shafer Winemaker: Doug Shafer Wine: 2016 Hillside Select Cabernet Sauvignon Stags Leap District, Napa Valley

Doug Shafer is pretty straightforward about what he thinks comprises a 100-point wine. “For me, a delicious, beautiful wine is one that speaks to the place where it’s from in a way that is elegant, balanced and pure. The way to achieve that is by planting the right grape variety in the right place and then ensuring the vineyards are healthy. A healthy, carefully tended vineyard makes gorgeous wine. It sounds simple but took us decades to get it right and we continue to fine tune.” The 2016 Hillside Select wasn’t Shafer’s first 100-point rodeo. “We’ve been incredibly fortunate over the years to have received a number of great reviews accompanied by scores that hit that 100-point mark. I don’t think it’s possible to get blasé about it. When you pour everything you have into making a wine, getting that kind of acknowledgement is great.”

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

Shafer admits their winemaker, Elias Fernandez, is their toughest critic. “Elias and I have been working together since 1984,” Shafer tells us. “We’ve learned a lot together but it’s really Elias who’s the perfectionist. It’s been a privilege to be his friend and colleague.” They both knew there was something special about vintage 2016. “When we grow the fruit and make the wine, our total focus is to let the wine become the best version of itself,” says Shafer. “With 2016 all the elements came together in the vineyard, on the crush pad, and in the winery. It was exciting to follow its progress over the years and it’s been an amazing experience to see the reception it’s gotten with people who love wine.” ••• And that’s really what it’s all about in the end. Giving people who love wine something to get excited about.

CHATEAU MONTELANA

ANNIVERSARY MILESTONES of Iconic Napa Valley Wineries

BY TANYA SEIBOLD

The year: 1972. The Napa Valley wine industry was in its infancy with only a handful of wineries beginning their foray into commercial winemaking. Some of the valley’s most iconic names today began their journey in wine and grape growing decades ago this year; each of them celebrating milestone accomplishments and showing no signs of slowing down. There’s no better time to become acquainted with each estate and partake in their momentous accomplishments than this year through a host of anniversary tasting and tour experiences, commemorative bottlings, and many festive private and public events.

Nestled in a mountainside in the hills of Calistoga, Chateau Montelena shot to fame by winning top honors at the famous 1976 Judgment of Paris tasting, with their Chardonnay, putting not only their winery on the map as a worldclass producer, but also rising the tide for all wineries in the valley. This historic event proved that Napa Valley had all the right conditions for producing the highest caliber of wines – its soils, climate, weather, and passionate people who believe in crafting exceptional wines. Chateau Montelena deeply honors this first milestone, but it’s the forward-thinking vision of CEO and Owner Bo Barrett, son VERY NAPA VALLEY

Clos du Val Winery World-travelers from a young age, winery founders John and Henrietta Goelet fell in love with the French lifestyle, and Bordeaux wines in particular, calling the iconic region home for many years. Their dream was to one day replicate the fine wines of Bordeaux back here in the States at their own winery. After an exhaustive two-year search, kismet struck in 1970 with a chance meeting of a fresh-out-of-wine-school French winemaker named Bernard Portet. Their visions aligned and together they planted their first vineyard and began production of their beloved Bordeaux-style wines in 1972 under Clos du Val. The winery’s name translates to “small vineyard estate of a small valley” in French, but it wasn’t long before this petite winery was gaining big recognition at top wine competitions in France and around the U.S. Fifty years on and three generations of Goelet family ownership later, Head of Winegrowing and Chairman, Olav Goelet, practices a vineyard-centric approach to making the finest Bordeaux-style Cabernet in Napa Valley. Clos Du Val Winery’s 50th Celebration Activities: • Anniversary tasting experience at the estate Hirondelle House featuring wines from their vast library collection. BARTOLUCCI FAMILY

Madonna Estate Winery A most impressive milestone is being commemorated this year by Madonna Estate Winery, a longstanding anchor in the Los Carneros region that is celebrating their 100th year of winemaking. The winery also holds the prestigious honor of second oldest family consistently making wine today in the valley. Established in 1922, the winery was founded by Italian immigrant Andrea Bartolucci and originally located further up-valley in the Oakville district. Between 1955 and 1965 Bartolucci Sr. and his son Louis, who was now leading the winery, purchased land in the Carneros appellation. The winery blazed a path of many “firsts” such as first to dry farm the vines in this region without added irrigation, and the first vintners to plant varietal vineyards – a single grape variety per block or vineyard as opposed to the traditional European practice of planting a “field selection” of multiple varieties all growing in the same vineyard. In 1991, they received their official organic CCOF certification for their estate vineyards from which they produce bottlings of Pinot Grigio, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Merlot, Dolcetto, Barbera, Cabernet Sauvignon, Gewürztraminer, Muscat Canelli, Reserve Pinot Noir and Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Today, the third and fourth generations are at the winery helm with Andrea’s grandson “Buck” Bartolucci leading the team along with his wife and their two adult daughters, Brette and Taylor, both of whom are integral to the daily operations of the winery overseeing the marketing/pr and hospitality.

Napa’s Iconic Heitz Cellar Celebrates the Grand Opening of a New World Class Hospitality Experience The Lawrence Family and Carlton McCoy Jr. introduce a state-of-the art hospitality center that creates memorable, elevated tasting experience for guests.

T

his year, Heitz Cellar opened its new Tasting Salon and Hospitality Center. Located in St. Helena, the space features a grand tasting room, a private tasting room, the Quartz Creek garden, veranda, and chef larder designed by renowned architect Peter Fleming. Founded in 1961 by Joe Heitz, Heitz Cellar helped shape the story of California winemaking. For this venture, The Lawrence Family and Carlton McCoy Jr. seek to honor Heitz’s storied history while continuing to innovate in the hospitality space. Led by Estate Director Erik Elliot and Advanced Sommelier, and Director of Membership & Guest Experiences Chloe Tyer, world-class service is at the forefront of Heitz Cellar’s tasting experience. Design elements merge the historical charm of St. Helena 19th century and luxury, seamlessly blending vintage and modern touches. All of the details for the Tasting Salon have been meticulously assembled: a flight of handblown Zalto glasses, freshly pressed white linens, custom silver pieces, California nature art adorning the walls, and white oak custom tables in a nod to the cellar’s wine barrels. For Elliott, it was crucial for the Tasting Salon to be authentic, elegant, and refined. “We want guests to feel as comfortable as they would be in their own home and offer an experience that gets to the roots of a guest’s desire to visit the Napa Valley: real wine, luxury, and authentic hospitality,” says Elliott. “Peter Fleming created an elegant design aesthetic for the Salon, blending quintessential California elements. This refinement was important as we are seeking to showcase a sixty-year legacy of crafting wines.” The calming and intimate nature of the Quartz Creek Garden makes it a special setting for guests. Prior to being seated, they can sit by the fountain and sip a glass of wine as jazz music plays. Elliott notes that a spot for guests to slow down and have this relaxing experience prior to a formal tasting is an experience that he has not seen in Napa. All of

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

the custom outdoor furniture has been made from sunken Cypress which is material salvaged from the bottom of lakes and rivers in South Carolina. McCoy’s thoughtful vision for the Tasting Salon and Hospitality Center ranges from the sequencing of the spaces to the pace at which each experience is enjoyed, placing an emphasis on hospitality in every aspect. “Tasting rooms in Napa often tend to be transactional, a quick experience focused almost exclusively on conversion to sales,” says McCoy. “When we had our first discussions with Peter Fleming, it was a priority for us that Heitz reset the bar for winery hospitality to focus on guest experiences through the lens of a three-star Michelin restaurant. We approached the design and experience with same level of detail as the world’s great restaurants to bring true hospitality to the Napa Valley. The team that I hired was also incredibly intentional. They have between them 25 years of fine dining experience and I feel confident that they will create an unparalleled guest experience.” Heitz Cellar debuted a new tasting offering with both hospitality and the winery’s legacy in mind, The Timeless Experience. Located at the site of the original property that Joe and Alice Heitz purchased in 1961, The Timeless Experience offers guests an unforgettable combination of history, luxury, and hospitality. They will taste and learn about Heitz Cellar’s iconic Single-Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon’s from the Napa Valley’s premier appellations and their remarkable ability to be paired with fine cheese and charcuterie. Heitz Cellar’s Wine Curators will guide you on a journey through the unique terroir and vinification methods that have enabled the wines to become revered and respected all over the world. The Tasting Room is open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Reservations are required for visits; guests can make reservations by going to hwww.heitzcellar.com/reservation.

years to the 13th century. Of course, you come for the wine, but your visit will combine the wines of Castello di Amorosa with history, making you feel as though you are visiting an authentic 13th century Italian Tuscan castle – because you are! This is not just a “tourist” replica, and as you stroll the grounds, sip the wines, drink in the history, you will understand why. It took fifteen years to build the Castello. No detail was left to chance, from Italian artisan’s hand forging iron, searching out and using handmade antique bricks and tile, to the construction of the battlements, torture chamber, great hall with hand painted frescos, and hidden passageways; Castello di Amorosa is just a wow factor. There are several wine experiences to choose from, including mouthwatering pairings (and for sweet lovers, a Belgian Chocolate pairing). Experience a multi-dimensional

blending of wine, food, history, and art at this one-of-a-kind locale. Now is the Time Rediscover Downtown Napa BY PAUL FRANSON

Visitors and locals alike have been flocking to Downtown Napa’s restaurants, wine-tasting salons and shops even before the prime season began, and it’s becoming one of Northern California’s most vibrant and popular destinations. There’s already something for everyone, and new developments are appearing in every direction as downtown expands with even more attractions.

■ ■

RESTAURANTS

A number of rew restaurants are coming to town. Mango on Main closed recently, but Osha Thai, one of San Francisco’s most popular Thai restaurants, will take its space on Main Street. And another famed San Francisco Asian restaurant is coming to Napa: Vietnamese Slanted Door will soon open in the old Budo/Cuvée spot in front of the River Terrace Inn soon. The local favorite food truck Los Agaves took over the former Corner in the Riverfront with Mexican food. Locals are excited to see Winston’s Café and Pauley’s Bagels coming to the space that long held ABC, Alexis’ Baking Company. Another local favorite, Kitchen Door, is moving into First Street Napa from the Oxbow Public Market. In turn, C Casa is graduating from its kiosk in the Market into the Kitchen Door space with a fullfledged Mexican cantina. Popular tapas bar Zuzu is expanding into the former Asia Café next door, and also will create a cozy bar next door in what was once Henry’s. Sadly, some restaurants have closed and not been replaced (yet), including popular Ca’ Momi Osteria, Stone Brewing Company, Basalt, Fratelli Gelato and Miminashi. Rumor says Morimoto will open a pan Asian restaurant in the Basalt space, but they aren’t talking. 40

Ox and the Fox is a wine bar in the First and Franklin Marketplace, but offers food, too. ■ ■

The Waterfront Seafood Grill is open on the Napa River in the River Front complex offering fresh seafood and quality, locally sourced ingredients.

New on Clinton Street: Napa Barrel Project – a beerfocused, world-class food and beverage experience – explores fermentation without boundaries. Beers from Big Stump Brewing Company plus limited production barrel aged beers. Specialty pizzas, salads and snack foods from locally sourced, quality ingredients. Barnhouse Napa Brews is a coffee shop plus with comfortable sofas and tables. Like European cafés, it also serves local cider, beers, seltzers and wines by the glass, as well as sodas and kombucha, making it an attractive place to hang out after peak coffee time. It offers graband-go food, including English pie and sausage rolls, panini, pastries, local chips, popcorn and donuts.

Wilfred’s Lounge is an authentic Tiki experience with Island-inspired cocktails, food and surroundings. Featuring rooftop views of the Napa River, Wilfred’s Lounge appeals to locals looking for a fun, new hangout and visitors seeking a fresh scene after a day of wine exploration. SPRING/SUMMER 2022

On First Street, Tannery Bend Beerworks is opening a taproom and full restaurant in the classic brick building featuring an indoor/outdoor beer garden. Plans for this hub of community activity and excitement include delicious barbeque, extensive cocktail list, and live music.

MUSIC AND ENTERTAINMENT

■ ■

Of course, Covid stopped live music and theater performances, but they’ve mostly returned though the situation remains fluid. The Blue Note, JaM Cellars Ballroom at the Opera House, the Uptown Theatre all opened for performances. John and Michele Truchard bought the historic Napa Valley Opera House, home to the Blue Note club and the JaM Cellars Ballroom, assuring the building will stay a performance center and receive needed maintenance. 42

BE BUBBLY

BottleRock and Oxbow River Stage concerts are returning during the summer, bringing many name performers to town, quite an accomplishment for a relatively small city. Concerts planned this summer include Norah Jones, Widespread Panic and Bonnie Raitt. New venues like Be Bubbly, The Yard at Feast It Forward, Napa Barrel Project and Barnhouse Brews are offering music and entertainment. In a departure for Napa, Wilfred’s Lounge is Napa’s first tiki bar with suitable drinks and food, while vintner Judd Finkelstein hopes to open The Fink cocktail lounge in the former Silo’s Club in the Napa Mill complex this summer. It will also include music.

New ‘Artist Alley’ at First Street Napa Showcases Acclaimed Artists with Immersive and Fun Cultural Experiences Di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art and First Street Napa are now collaborating to celebrate and feature artists who inspire the distinct culture of Napa Valley and the Northern California region. Artist Alley will provide Napa residents and visitors alike with an immersive experience that features murals, sculpture, film, and interactive digital media from acclaimed local artists and leading museums.

Folklore, a place to buy vinyl records, drink wine, sip coffee, listen to the radio and chill out, plans to open next to Billco’s Billiards on Third Street. Ace & Vines card club opened not far from downtown and Napa Lounge is a new sports bar with a golf simulator in south Napa. SPRING/SUMMER 2022

OXBOW PUBLIC MARKET

■ ■

The Oxbow District continues to add attractions, increasingly fulfilling the vision of vintners and philanthropists Robert and Margrit Mondavi who donated to its future. The success has expanded far beyond Copia and the Oxbow Public Market, though they are the linchpins of its success. Loveski Deli features “Jew-ish” food from Michelin star chef Christopher Kostow including handmade sourdough bagels, house-made pickles and other ferments, vegetables from the Kostow farm, and the best cured and smoked meats. Then, in the summer, expect Moro Napa from star chef Mourad Lahlou from San Francisco with informal food like you’d find in a market in Morocco. Bar Lucia in the main hall has expanded its food menu to include appetizers, salads and sandwiches to go along with its favored rosé wines. Fieldwork Brewing Company has a new food menu in its beer garden at the “Annex” of the Oxbow Public Market. While they will continue to welcome outside food from the market, they have added sandwiches to the snacks.

Blue Note Charles Krug Summer Sessions 2022 Preliminary Lineup • Friday, May 20 – Jeffrey Osborne ($125, $85, $65) Jeffrey Osborne began his professional singing career in 1969 with a popular funk and soul group called Love Men Ltd. (later known as L.T.D.). After more than ten years with the band, Osborne decided to pursue a solo career, which produced such Top 40 hits as “Don’t You Get So Mad,” “Stay With Me Tonight,” “On the Wings of Love” and a duet with Dionne Warwick, “Love Power.” Osborne’s solo career has brought him five gold and platinum albums, including Stay with Me Tonight (1983) and Only Human (1990). • May 21 & 22 – Damien Escobar ($109, 89, $59) Musician. Entrepreneur. Philanthropist. Humanitarian. Damien Escobar bears many titles and puts no limits on what more he can achieve, making him one of the most prolific figures hailing from Jamaica, Queens. The Emmy-winning, NAACP Image Award nominee, possesses a nearly two-decade-spanning resume that includes Billboard chart-topping albums, sold-out global tours, collaborations with music legends, and more — an inspirational success story that started with Escobar playing his violin on NYC subways. Proving his hustle, drive, passion, and unquestionable talent, are the pillars that hold up his ever-expanding brand. BLUE NOTE CHARLES KRUG SUMMER SESSIONS/Mitchell Glotzer

Announcing The 2022 Blue Note Charles Krug Summer Sessions Featuring Jeffrey Osborne, Chris Botti, Madeleine Peyroux, Sergio Mendes and more Blue Note Napa announces the return of music to Charles Krug Winery with its Blue Note Charles Krug Summer Sessions, an outdoor concert series presented on the winery grounds in St. Helena, CA. Blue Note Napa debuted its first music series in May of 2021, and after over 20 artists and nearly 40 successful concerts, is back by popular demand. The iconic club releases its preliminary lineup of seven artists and intends to announce many more in weeks to come. “We are thrilled to be back on the beautiful grounds of the Charles Krug Winery,” says Ken Tesler, managing director of Blue Note Napa. “We are looking forward to shows almost every weekend though September. Charles Krug wine and Blue Note music have proved to make a fantastic combination. We look forward to seeing everyone back this year!” The oldest winery in Napa Valley, the historic grounds of Charles Krug Winery make for a distinctive concert setting. “Our partnership with Blue Note Napa is the perfect pairing of great wine, music, food and community,” says Judd Wallenbrock, president and CEO of Charles Krug. “We are thrilled and honored to keep this new tradition thriving.” All concerts will take place at the Charles Krug Winery, located at 2800 Main Street in St. Helena, CA. Patrons, staff and artists must be fully vaccinated to attend. A full explanation of health and safety guidelines can be found on Blue Note Napa’s website. • June 3 & 4 – Chris Botti ($159, $139, $79) Since the release of his 2004 critically acclaimed CD When I Fall In Love, Chris Botti has become the largest-selling American instrumental artist. His success has crossed over to audiences usually reserved for pop music and his ongoing association with PBS has led to four #1 jazz albums, as well as multiple gold, platinum and GRAMMY® Awards. Most recently, his latest album Impressions won the GRAMMY® for Best Pop Instrumental. Performing worldwide and selling more than four million albums, he has found a form of creative expression that begins in jazz and expands beyond the limits of any single genre. • June 18 – Big Bad Voodoo Daddy ($75, $65, $55) April 2022 marks the 29th anniversary of Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s remarkable arrival onto the music scene. Since its formation in the early nineties in Ventura, California, the band has toured virtually nonstop, performing on average over 150 shows a year, and has produced a sizable catalog of recorded music, with sales of over two million albums to date. Early on, during their legendary residency at the Derby nightclub in Los Angeles, they reminded the world, amid the grunge era no less, that it was still cool to swing. The band, cofounded by singer Scotty Morris and drummer Kurt Sodergren, was at the forefront of the swing revival of that time, blending a vibrant fusion of the classic American sounds of jazz, swing and Dixieland, with the energy and spirit of contemporary culture. • June 24 – Madeleine Peyroux ($85, $65, $45) Madeleine Peyroux’s dusky voice has been likened to that of jazz greats Billie Holiday and Ella Fitzgerald. Much like songbird Edith Piaf, Madeleine Peyroux spent her teenage years busking the busy streets of Paris, befriending the city’s street musicians and making the city’s Latin quarter her first performing stage. • July 8 – Sergio Mendes ($125, $85, $65) Producer, composer, keyboardist and vocalist, Sergio Mendes is one of the most internationally successful jazz artists of all time, with his signature mix of bossa nova and samba defining Brazilian music. His hit single, “Mas Que Nada,” was the first Portuguese language song to hit Billboard’s U.S. Pop chart. A three-time GRAMMY® Award-winner, Mendes has recorded more than 45 albums, with numerous gold and platinum discs among them. With a career spanning six decades, his enduring influence on the music industry continues to evolve. • September 25 – REDMAN · MEHLDAU · MCBRIDE · BLADE: A MoodSwing Reunion ($125, $95, $65) MoodSwing, the 1994 album by Joshua Redman’s first permanent quartet, was an astonishing collection by four precociously talented musicians who would rapidly establish themselves as creative beacons. After years of individual triumphs, saxophonist Redman, pianist Brad Mehldau, bassist Christian McBride, and drummer Brian Blade join forces again for an eclectic night of straight-ahead jazz numbers.

Empress M >> Empress M on the Silverado Trail provides an authentic Chinese fine-dining experience with classics like Peking duck and dumplings. Executive chef Peter Huang’s extensive menu brings fresh, local, and seasonal produce to familiar dishes and showcases his Best Dim Sum awards talent with immense flavor.

EMPRESS M, NAPA

Fleetwood >> Fleetwood serves wood-fired fine foods in Calistoga, doubling down on the comfort and wellness for which this little mountain retreat town is known. Executive Chef Drew Glassell has crafted his own version of Cal-Ital cuisine with a menu graced with pizza, pasta, cioppino, and a trio of classic proteins – grilled salmon, Rocky chicken and striploin steak. The full bar comes complete with local and international wines, craft beer and more than a half-dozen artisan cocktails. House of Better >> House of Better is the newly renovated Dr. Wilkinson’s Backyard Resort & Mineral Springs Spa onsite restaurant and dishes an eclectic and tasteful mashup menu of health food and Southwestern style dishes – offering flavor, health, and wellness in every bite. Chef Trevor Logan elevates good, healthy eats with his Southwestern flair and makes outdoor counter service delicious and playful in this backyard-like setting.

SPRING/SUMMER 2022

SUNSHINE CAFE, NAPA

WATERFRONT SEAFOOD GRILL, NAPA/Bob McClenahan

Kitchen Door >> The highly anticipated grand reopening of Kitchen Door in its new First Street Napa location (moved from The Oxbow) is set for early 2022. California classics with an Asianinspired flare grace this local staple’s menu. The restaurant is known for its Korean-style chicken wings and creamy mushroom soup, and locals are especially eager to bring their families back to this adored local establishment. Executive Chef Todd Humphries will bring back classic Kitchen Door favorites to the menu and offer new takes on cuisine as well. Los Agaves >> The past 20 years Ricky Gonzalez has worked at some of the best restaurants in the Napa Valley including working as a cook at Tra Vigne, front of house at La Toque, and as a manager at Bistro Don Giovanni. He knows the importance of great service, quality, and consistency of food. His Los Agaves food truck has been a favorite of locals for years. Gonzales has now opened a brick and mortar restaurant on Napa’s Riverfront. Using the freshest ingredients and traditional dishes from his beloved Mexico combined with the passion he has for his heritage he hopes to bring Napa an authentic small taste of Mexico.

Mary Elizabeth Restaurant >> Located inside the new Cambria Hotel bordering the Napa River, Mary-Elizabeth’s exhibits the deep history and culture built by the Napa River’s impact on the formation of the Napa Valley wine country. Through the elegant use of small plates, sharables, wine-centric cuisine, and masterful craft beer pairings, Mary-Elizabeth’s showcases why the old saying, “life is good by the river” came to be. North Block >> The namesake restaurant at Yountville’s North Block hotel is open for dinner and serving a seasonal menu with meat and vegetarian dishes. Chef Nick Tamburo’s style of refined California cooking infuses raw and smokey elements, as well as woodfired sourdough pizzas. North Block was recently added to the 2021 Micheline Guide and proves to already be a favorite in Yountville.

North Spirits & Tapas >> Craft beer, local wines, and specialty cocktails come together with international small plates at North Spirits & Tapas in Napa. This hip bar has an impressive spirits lineup and a delicious menu to boot. Charcuterie and local cheese plates pair well with the local wines, while the more adventurous imbiber can choose a handcrafted cocktail and couple it with tasty dishes like crispy brussel sprouts served on soft polenta or grilled salmon on creamy delicious risotto. Olive and Hay >> Olive and Hay at the Meritage Resort in southern Napa offers farm-fresh Italian cuisine that covers everything from classic to innovative dishes like black truffle pizza and rigatoni in lamb ragu. The restaurant welcomes diners with a comfortable indoor or al-fresco dining experience, an award-winning local wine list, and a handful of creative cocktails and aperitifs. Sunshine Cafe >> For breakfast or lunch, this cozy spot has quickly become a local favorite. It may be small but the food packs a big punch with plentiful portions using local, farm fresh, seasonal and sustainable ingredients. Try one of a variety of eggs benedict options with a Sunshine Bloody Mary or maybe Bananas Foster French Toast with a Boozy Hot Chocolate is what you’re craving! Plenty of vegan/vegetarian options round out the menu.

Waterfront SeaFood Grill >> As the name suggests, the Waterfront Seafood Grill is flanked against the Napa River and serves up delicious presentations of fresh seafood from longstanding purveyors. With a 21-year tenure at Cole’s Chop House, Executive Chef Jesus Mendez brings more than forty years of culinary and restaurant experience in Napa Valley to this new restaurant.

Wilfred’s Lounge >> Unlike any other restaurant in Napa County, the recently opened Wilfred’s Lounge brings guests an authentic tiki dining experience with its Polynesian-influenced menu and bountiful list of rum-based cocktails. For the adventurous eater, spam sliders fit the bill, and entrées like line-caught, sustainably sourced tuna are delicious.

Di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art Celebrates 25 Years of Rabble-Rousing Art in Napa Valley 2022 marks a milestone 25th Anniversary for di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art as a public arts organization. During the past quarter-century, di Rosa has originated groundbreaking exhibitions and programs, supported emerging and established artists, while preserving its stunning 217 acres in Napa Valley. Di Rosa is commemorating the silver anniversary all year long with a series of special events ranging from artist talks and films to concerts and theatrical performances. On May 14, patrons are invited to attend a talk by Executive Director Kate Eilertsen and guests on the anniversary of Rene di Rosa’s birthday, reflecting on the importance of di Rosa’s collection and site. On December 3, the festivities will culminate with a 25th Anniversary Celebration Gala honoring Eleanor Coppola and Lynn Hershman Leeson for their extraordinary lives in the arts. A complete listing of 25th Anniversary events can be found on the 25th Anniversary webpage. In anticipation of this banner year, the organization adopted a new mission statement in late 2021, promising to “engage its community in the connective power of art and nature” through its permanent collection, contemporary exhibitions and educational programs. This evokes the vision of founders Rene and Veronica di Rosa, who sold their famed vineyards to Seagram in order to build a public “art park,” which opened in 1997. Originally known as the di Rosa Preserve: Art & Nature, the organization changed its name to

the di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art in 2017. Di Rosa’s 217 acres provide a spectacular setting for the organization’s collection of approximately 1600 artworks – one of the leading collections of art produced in Northern California since 1960. “Rene wasn’t afraid to take risks with his support of young, provocative artists who are now international art world icons,” Executive Director Kate Eilertsen states. Going forward, “these artists will continue to give us the ability to understand the world in new and profound ways.” Looking forward to its next 25 years, di Rosa is committed to engaging new audiences within wine country and beyond through dynamic community partnerships and a renewed commitment to the values of diversity, equity and inclusion. “Rene and Veronica di Rosa gave our community a legendary gift when they not only supported artists from the Bay Area but also a beautiful art park for hikes, picnics, bird watching and watching the sun set,” states Liz Dietz, di Rosa Board of Directors Co-President. Di Rosa Center for Contemporary Art is located at 5200 Sonoma Highway, Napa and is open to the public Friday to Sunday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and by appointment. For more information visit www.dirosaart.org. Photos: Mark di Suvero, “For Veronica” (1987), sited in front of di Rosa’s Gallery 1 atop the Winery Lake dam.
