Tin City

A Personality of its Own

Aaron Wines

Tin City, located about four miles south of downtown Paso Robles, is a fun-zone of wine, food, and salivating experiences. It is exciting, eclectic and a must-visit destination. Boasting its own special vibe, you will be consumed by the energy. So, park your car, start walking, explore, and experience this enclave and its unique Paso personality!

THE WINE You’ll need a week or more to visit all the tasting rooms in Tin City. These are small, boutique wineries featuring handcrafted wines of the utmost character and quality. In many cases, you’ll be sipping with the winemaker. With over two dozen tasting rooms, here are a few to start exploring: Aaron Wines: Aaron Jackson is a surfer. He brings the adventure and excitement of surfing to his wines. Aaron’s motto is “boundaries are few on the road less travelled.” Experience his Aaron Wine label (mostly Rhône blends) or Aequorea’s label, featuring Pinot Noirs and aromatic whites (sourced from coastal SLO vineyards). Experience the surfer’s personality in a bottle.

Monochrome

Nicora

Benom: A partnership between two French brothers, Arnaud Fabre, and his older brother Guillaume Fabre (of Clos Solene). Focusing on Cabernet Sauvignon as the mainstay, explore eclectic blends of Cabernet with Rhône and Spanish varietals. Enjoy quintessential French hospitality. Emercy: You may be familiar with Orion Stang from Dilecta. Emercy is his new project. Sourcing grapes from some of the Central Coast’s most esteemed vineyards, Orion currently produces several exciting wines. Emercy is located in the Tin City Annex. Hubba Wines: Riley Roddick is a young, exciting winemaker, with knowledge and experience transcending her age. As Riley says, “I make the wine I love to drink.” And you will also love to drink these fun, exciting wines. Riley sources from select vineyards to express the Central Coast AVA. Her wines are as vivacious as she is. Join her journey, you won’t be disappointed.

Wine Country This Month: Central Coast

Jacob Toft

Jacob Toft: Jacob Toft is no newcomer to the Paso scene. He has been making small-lot, artisanal wines for more than two decades and has earned a stellar reputation. Sourcing from some of the finest vineyards (G2, Caliza, Stolpman among them), you will be exposed to enticing single varietals and blends of character and excitement. Monochrome: Dave McGee describes himself as a “contrarian.” His mission was to disprove the notion that “white wines are simple.” As such, Dave produces only white wines, mostly blends. Dave has demonstrated that white wines, given care and effort, will stand side by side to reds in terms of complexity and overall wine profile. Several of Dave’s wines have received accolades being among the highest scoring ever awarded to that particular varietal or blend.

McPhee’s Canteen

Riley Roddick/Hubba Wines

serving up at McPhees Grill in Templeton, for decades. Whether it’s gourmet pizzas, salads, tacos, or fish & chips, take a food break between your Tin City adventures. Negranti Creamery: A cornucopia of delicious hand-crafted flavors, featuring sheep’s milk ice cream. Also check out their downtown Paso and Atascadero locations. Six Test Kitchen: A Michelin Guide listed restaurant, for the gourmet and fine food lover, this is a true “foodie” experience in creativity of ingredients, flavors, and hospitality. With limited seating, advance reservations are a must. Every dinner here is “a happening.”

But That’s Not All

Nicora: Nick Elliott is a Paso success story. Coming to Paso on a construction job over twenty years ago, falling in love with the area and the wines, Nick is one of Tin City’s (and Paso’s) premier winemakers. He was also one of the first winemaker to open in Tin City. His love is Syrah, and if you love Syrah, Nicora is not to be missed.

Plan time to explore these other Tin City purveyors:

ONX: With beautiful, comfortable, inviting indoor and outdoor seating, you’ll want to visit ONX. Primarily a blend house, winemaker Drew Nenow works magic with a variety of mostly estate-grown Rhône blends. However, ONX also sources from premium Central Coast vineyards to offer a wide, exciting selection of other varietals.

Etto Pastificio: Pastas made fresh daily. Shop for full an assortment of Italian delicacies.

These are only a handful of the artisan, handcrafted wine tasting rooms that await your Tin City exploration. Most tasting rooms require reservations in advance. Please check individual website for details

THE EATS There’s no need to leave Tin City to assuage your hunger! Here are a few Tin City eateries: Lebber’s Pizza: Located next to Hubba. Serving mouthwatering gourmet wood-fired pizza. (Thursday-Sunday, 11:30am-7:00pm) McPhee’s Canteen: McPhee’s brings the same commitment to freshness, quality and fun that Ian McPhee has been

Barrel House Brewing Co: “Good People, good time and great beer.” You’ll find it all at Barrel House: An ever-changing variety of craft beers, music, a mobile kitchen on site, and most of all ... fun people! Switch it up at the Barrel House Brewing Co., (also in San Luis Obispo, Visalia, and Fresno).

Olivas de Oro: Shop from a selection of “home grown” awardwinning olive oils. Tin City Distillery: Tin City Distillery/Wine Shine is an elite project producing a variety of bourbons, brandies and specialized spirits from Don and Claudia Burns of Turtle Rock Vineyards (located in Tin City, next to Monochrome). A fun experience when the spirit moves you for something out of the ordinary. Check individual websites, plus the latest news and updates on what’s happening and where to go in Tin City on their website: www.tincitypasorobles.com. Wine-adult beverages-food-specialty purveyors, it’s all in Tin City. Just park and get your walking shoes on! Cheers! Wine Tasting

Helpful Tips

Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations. Following the guidelines and etiquette tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go: • Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved. • Understand that there may be a time limit •A sk about the different tasting experiences and costs. • I f you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person. • I f this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly. •B e sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.) •B e flexible •D on’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart. • Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period. •Y ou don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking – use the dump bucket. Those little sips add up fast. •Y ou don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like. •T ake time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will! • Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?

10

• Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help. • Don’t feel pressured to buy a bottle or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bottle). • Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting). • Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white! • Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit. • Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries. • Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine. • Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a baguette, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery • Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day. • If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being. • Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them. • Enjoy yourself! Be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time. Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind ... let’s go tasting and have fun! Sta. Rita Hills Wine and Fire Weekend

Rick Longoria, 2022 Sta. Rita Hills Wine Alliance Vintner of the Year, founder of Longoria Wines.

The Sta. Rita Hills Wine Alliance is gearing up for their annual Wine and Fire Weekend. Four separate events will take place August 18th – the 21st at multiple venues throughout the Santa Rita Hills in Lompoc. Thursday night’s kick off Barn Party will be at The Hilt’s new winery on Santa Rosa Road. Library and large format wines will be poured by the winemakers at a casual walk-around tasting. A country-style BBQ will be served up by Central Coast Specialties along with an array of charcutiers. On Friday night, Rick Longoria, founder of Longoria Wines, will be honored as SRHWA Vintner of the Year as one of the true pioneers of Santa Barbara County. The La Paulee style dinner will take place at Babcock Winery. Wines will be hosted by member wineries and guests are encouraged to bring bottles to share at their table. The evening begins with a sparkling reception from 6 to 7 p.m. The BBQ buffet being prepared by High on the Hog Catering will be served following a short program. This will be an exciting evening as we toast Rick Longoria’s 40-year career. Saturday morning, we are off to Speed Tasting with a Winemaker. This event will take place at Margerum Winery in Buellton and is an opportunity to talk with the participating winemakers while tasting their wines. The winemakers rotate to a different table every ten minutes giving guests an opportunity to have focused conversations with eight local winemakers. A panini boxed lunch, prepared by Cups and Crumbs, will be served at the conclusion of the speed tasting. Participating winemakers include Rick Longoria, Vintner of the Year, Adam Tolmach, The Ojai Vineyard / Fe Ciega, Aaron Walker, Pali Wine Company, Doug Margerum, Barden Wines, Justin Charbonneau, Temperance Cellars, Kathy Joseph, Fiddlehead Cellars, Mireia Taribo, Camins 2 Dreams, Peter Work, Ampelos Cellars. The Wine and Fire Grand Tasting tops off the weekend’s events at the beautiful La Purisima Mission just outside of Lompoc from 5 to 8 p.m. Thirty-five Sta. Rita Hills wineries and local chefs gather under the oaks for this favorite event of the year! Participating food vendors include Babe Farms, Campbell Farms, High on the Hog Catering, SRH BBQ Team, Central Coast Specialties, Cups and Crumbs, South Side Coffee Co., The Ballard Inn, and Homegrown Cowboy will be serving up local barbequed favorites and goodies. Tickets are available now as a weekend package or individual events. For ticket options and more information, go to staritahills.com.
