The Devil Makes Three – The power of words isn’t lost on longstanding Americana triumvirate The Devil Makes Three— Pete Bernhard, Lucia Turino, and Cooper McBean. For as much as they remain rooted in troubadour traditions of wandering folk, Delta blues, whiskey-soaked ragtime, and reckless rock ‘n’ roll, the band nods to the revolutionary unrest of author James Baldwin, the noholds barred disillusionment of Ernest Hemingway, and Southern Gothic malaise of Flannery O’Connor.
All required COVID-19 health & safety guidelines in place at the time of the festival will be followed to offer a safe festival experience. whalerockmusicfestival.com
Children 4 & under are free and 5-12 are just $10.
Whale Rock Music and Arts Festival features back-toback band performances on two stages, a gallery of local artists, all-ages yoga, kid crafts and games, Castoro wines, Bethel Rd. spirits, craft beers, hard ciders, food trucks and more. The Udsen family has gifted event proceeds to local, education-based non-profit organizations each year. Total donated over the first seven years exceeds $120,000. The 2022 benefactor is again the Templeton Instrumental Music Boosters Association (TIMBA), a parent volunteer organization dedicated to enhancing the experiences of Templeton High School musicians.

Grace Potter – Described by Spin as “one of the greatest living voices in rock today,” and by SF Weekly as “the whole package,” Grace Potter continues to impress both critics and audiences with her musical achievements and captivating live shows. Heralded as one of today’s best live performers, Grace Potter has played every major music festival from Coachella and Lollapalooza to Bonnaroo and Rock in Rio. Her latest album “Daylight” was nominated for two Grammies including Best Rock Album.
The 9th annual Whale Rock Music & Arts Festival is right around the corner and tickets are moving fast!

THE TOWN
Explore the wine town of Los Olivos, with close to 30 tasting rooms, all within walking distance. Enjoy tasting what the Santa Barbara wine region offers. Park your car, put your walking shoes on and get ready to explore and enjoy many Los Olivos’s tasting rooms, such as: Larner Vineyard and Winery, located on the corner of Grand Ave. and Alamo Pintado Ave, in an old historic building, fronted by an early 20th century gas pump. The smallest tasting room you may ever visit, Larner delivers wine tasting in a big way with estate grown wines. Experience the terroir driven wines of Michael Larner as you sit and sip outside, people watching. Specializing in Syrah, Michael Larner is intent in bringing out the nuances of the terroir from these single varietals and blends. Also, if available, try Michael’s homage to Italy, Malvasia Bianca. This delicious white wine is a definite “go-to,” especially on a warm day or summer’s eve. Following your Larner tasting, if it’s lunch time, grab a specialty sandwich next door at Panino or dine down the street at Los Olivos Wine Merchant and Café. Strolling around town, discover and enjoy some of the many tasting rooms, this small town has to offer, such as: Tercero Wines where you may taste Larry Schaffer’s recently released Malvasia Bianca, or Bien Nacido & Solomon Hills which offer tastings from their two highly acclaimed vineyards, Dragonette Cellars, and so many others awaiting your discovery.

Zaca Mesa Winery is one of the iconic, early pioneers of the area. In 1973, it was only the third bonded winery in Santa Barbara County. Plantings at the time were mostly Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot Noir and Riesling. It took a few decades to realize that the micro-climate was best suited to Rhône varieties. Ripping out their vines and replanting, since 1997, Zaca Mesa has focused exclusively on producing exceptional Rhône wines. Among these is the iconic Black Bear Block Syrah. Planted in 1978, this is the oldest block of Syrah in Santa Barbara County. Zaca Mesa has a history of quality, experimentation, and a “thinking outside the box” mentality. Their early winemakers included pioneers that set the standard for Zaca Mesa and Santa Barbara, such as Ken Brown (Zaca Mesa’s fi rst winemaker), Jim Clendenon, and Bob Lindquist. Today, Kristin Bryden leads the winemaking team, always looking for new methods to highlight the fruit and Underlyingterroir.this philosophy, is Zaca Mesa’s newly introduced TREAD label.

Attendees are encouraged to walk, carpool, take advantage of local rideshare options, or take the train, to ensure safe and convenient transport to and from the festival.“Santa Barbara Wine Country has been internationally recognized as the Wine Region of the Year because it produces globally competitive wines from one of the most diverse growing regions in the world. • If possible have a designated driver (or use a driving service). If staff feels you have had enough to drink they may refuse service, it’s for your own well-being.
• Take time to smell the roses, or wine! Swirl the wine in the bowl of the glass then take your time, put your nose into the bowl of the glass … and inhale to experience the bouquet. See what fragrances you can identify: Earthy? Lemon? Honeysuckle? Cherry? Tobacco? It’s okay if you don’t identify any of those things, with time and tasting you will!
Be respectful of all conditions and procedures. Wineries have had challenges to adjust their normal procedures due to Covid-19. Everything they do is to insure your safety, pleasure and that you have a great time. Covid-19 has had many positive effects for wine tasting: More intimate, less crowded, more time to really talk to your winery host. With this is mind ... let’s go tasting and have fun!
• Plan in advance. Most wineries are now by appointment and in some cases “as space is available” (should you not have made reservations). Don’t be shy to ask at the last minute, but understand they may be full or be reserved.
• Be flexible
• Remember the five “S’s” of wine tasting: See (the wine in the glass), Swirl, Smell, Sip and Savor. (Take a small sip. Let the liquid surround your taste buds, what flavors can you identify)?
•
Don’t wear scents into a tasting room (cologne or perfume), and try not to wear white!
• You don’t have to finish the glass. You are tasting, not drinking –use the dump bucket. Those li le sips add up fast.
BY DONALD SONDERLING
TastingWine
• Don’t try to do too much. In general, three to four wineries will fill your day.
• Be sure to adhere to individual, local and state guidelines in place at the time (i.e. mask wearing until seated, etc.)
• Eat breakfast before you leave for the day and … hydrate – hydrate – hydrate! Hint: Drink one glass of water for each glass of wine.
Visiting a winery tasting room may sometimes be intimidating, especially if you are not used to wine tasting and aren’t quite sure what to expect. Additionally, Covid-19 has made it necessary for some changes and adaptations.
Following the guidelines and etique e tips below will help enhance your experience as you travel through wine country. Due to Covid-19, there have been changes to the wine tasting adventures. So please before you go:
Ask questions! Remember … there are no stupid questions. You are there to enjoy and learn, and your server is there to help.
• Don’t worry if you think you don’t know good wine. “Good wine” is what you like. Period.
• Don’t be self-conscious to share a tasting (*if appropriate) with your companion – it’s not looked on as being cheap, in fact, it’s smart.
Enjoy yourself!
• If this applies, ask if the winery is dog/child friendly.
• Ask about the different tasting experiences and costs.
•
• Understand that there may be a time limit
•
Bring something to snack on such as crackers, breadsticks or a bague e, (but inquire in advance if outside food is okay to bring in). Take time for lunch. When picnicking at a winery, never bring wine from another winery
• Seek smaller, out-of-the-way, boutique wineries.
Helpful Tips
• Trust your palate. Don’t worry if you don’t like what your friends or companions like. Not everyone likes the same things. This is about you – not them.
(It’s prudent to double check your planned visit, if possible, the day of your visit.)
• You don’t have to like everything poured. The reason you are tasting is to see what you do and don’t like.
• If you plan to “share” a tasting, ask if it is okay. You may still be charged per person.
• Leave a tip if you have had a nice experience ($5-$20 is a general rule, depending on the type of tasting).
• Ask your server to recommend their favorite wineries to visit.
•
• Don’t feel pressured to buy a bo le or to join a wine club, (however, if the tasting is free, or if you have a private tasting with a winemaker, it is good form to purchase a bo le).
