The Roots DIPSENSARY

Exceptional Professionalism, Great Products and Exceptional Service As Lompoc becomes a key player in the cannabis industry due to its welcoming city ordinance, there is a team of local residents who are striving to deliver the best cannabis shopping experience around. Focusing on individual client needs and providing unparalleled customer service sets these passionate connoisseurs apart from all others. In the beautiful valley of flowers, lies an unrivalled facility known as The Roots Dispensary. The Roots is the first locally owned and operated facility to open its doors in Lompoc. Opened in late 2019, the 2800-square-foot building at 805 West Laurel Avenue, Lompoc, CA (formerly the Whistle Stop Pub) has been transformed into a modern cannabis dispensary. It took roughly two years to complete the build, from when the application was first submitted to their grand opening. “It was a very long and tedious process, but I wouldn’t change it

14

for the world. The end result was worth every bit of what we went through for our community,” said Victor Sanchez cofounder and Lompoc resident. Operating in the newly remodeled La Chiquita Plaza, The Roots is home to more than 120 strains of cannabis, commonly called flower. “We pride ourselves on having a unique and carefully curated menu to ensure we carry something for everyone,” said Alex Orozco Purchasing Manager. The diversity of the products displayed can be overwhelming for a first-time visitor. Fortunately each person is paired with a trained employee, better known as a budtender. This creates an atmosphere where questions could be answered about products and individuals can get recommendations according to their needs and likes without ever getting a sense of pressure or rush. Upon entering The Roots, the elegant lobby gives you the same warm feeling you get at home, whilst a gorgeous glass partition separates the lobby from the show room. The friendly staff make it their mission to greet every person as if they have been friends for years. Co-founder Beth Thuna noted, “The dispensary is where knowledgeable, friendly staff provide private patient education and consultations and efficient service to access the highest quality of pure, precisiondosed medical cannabis products.” With the feel of an ultramodern bakery shop, gleaming display cases will showcase a wide variety of products and formulations, such as tinctures, salves, tablets, fruit chews, flower, dissolvable films, and oils, to ensure patients can conveniently find the medication via their preferred method to receive predictable relief. Each staff member has been through weeks of training to ensure they make the best recommendation for each individual patient. “For the first time in my life I can honestly say I wake up every day excited to come to work,” said co-founder and resident Luis Castaneda. “I get to talk to people who share the same

passion as I do on a daily basis.” “We are grateful to the City of Lompoc for their support of this facility which will help thousands of patients and customers who have been waiting for local legal cannabis to relieve symptoms and side effects of cancer, epilepsy, and many other medical conditions,” stated David Garcia, Treasurer of The Roots Dispensary. Customers can view available inventory and order products from The Roots Dispensary website (www.VisitTheRoots.com) and choose from either pick-up or delivery.” OPEN MONDAY-SATURDAY 9AM-9PM SUNDAY 9AM-6PM

ready to talk about their favorite hiking trail or barbecue joint, or to point the way to the winery with the best Pinot Noir. It’s all part of the SLO life, that combination of good stuff that makes visiting here so nourishing to the soul. San Luis Obispo’s unusual natural beauty, along with its gentle climate, first attracted the Spanish padres to the area in the 1700s. In 1772, they built the fifth of California’s 21 missions here, on the banks of San Luis Creek, and named it Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa. Today, many consider this the most beautiful of the Spanish missions. More than 200 wineries produce critically acclaimed vintages in Paso Robles, Edna Valley and Arroyo Grande Valley. Visitors can head out along the gorgeous country roads to sip their way through the vineyards. For more information on San Luis Obispo County, visit the websites visitslo.com or www.pasowine.com.

Woods Humane Society cares for over 3,000 cats and dogs each year at their facilities in San Luis Obispo and Atascadero until they can be united with loving families. In November of 2018, they opened the first North County low-cost spay and neuter clinic at their location in Atascadero. This clinic can be utilized by any pet owner. Wine 4 Paws helps ensure that Woods can continue to offer our community animals the highest level of care – it’s a win-win for everyone! Wine 4 Paws began in 2009 and has grown to almost 100, plus restaurants, breweries, and olive oil producers! Overall, Wine 4 Paws has raised over $400,000 for Woods. Woods Humane Society is a nonprofit organization which receives no tax funds, but is supported by donations, grants, bequests, fundraising events and fees for services. Woods is independent of San Luis Obispo County Animal Services, but works in close cooperation with them and other animal groups in the county for the welfare of all animals. As part of their commitment to work towards ending pet overpopulation, not only is every animal at Woods spayed or neutered, they also provide low-cost spay and neuter services for San Luis Obispo County Animal Services, many other local rescue organizations, and for owned animals in our county. The Humane Education Program offers a wide range of activities for tots to teens and provides insight and enrichment for the next generation of animal advocates. Their full-time Training and Behavior Coordinator provides expert care for dogs in the adoption program as well as dog obedience training classes for the public, designed to keep pets in their homes and out of shelters. Financial support from donors and the dedication of staff and hundreds of volunteers ensure the success of their work. There‘s a map available on the Wine 4 Paws website, or at any participating business during the event. When you help generate a donation, you can get your map stamped. Once it’s full turn it in to any participating winery for entry in the Wine 4 Paws Drawing. For details, visit www.wine4paws.com.

Chamisal Vineyards Edna Valley’s First Vineyard Imagine one of many perfect days on the Central Coast, sipping wine, surrounded by vineyards, mesmerized by the gently rolling Santa Lucia hills in the background. You take that first sip, exhale, and think, “this is what life is all about.” Better yet, don’t imagine it, take a drive up the fabled “Ventura Highway in the sunshine,”* turning off around Pismo Beach, driving east about 12 miles to the Edna Valley. Traversing through some of the richest and most scenic agricultural and vineyard land in California, you arrive at Chamisal Vineyards, where you will experience the magic first hand.

It’s about Terroir “Terroir,” a French word with Latin roots meaning “earth,” signifies so much more when related to grape growing and winemaking. “Terroir” is unique and expressive, because it is the soil, weather, topography, geology and environment of a “place” that imparts the individual characteristics, tastes and flavors of the grape – which you experience in the glass. Chamisal was the first vineyard planted in the Edna Valley, in 1973. It has always been the objective to showcase the grapes and wine that can be grown in this cool-weather climate. Primarily, Chamisal is a producer of fine Burgundian-inspired wines, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. However, there are micro-climates that are exceptional for showing off certain Rhône varietals such as Syrah and Grenache. During your tasting at Chamisal, you will savor, and understand, the difference soil type, location and elevation makes in the growing of grapes. (The typical Chamisal flight will consist of two Chardonnays, two Pinot Noirs, and a Syrah or Grenache.) Delve into a one-of-a-kind experience by scheduling an Estate Vineyard Tour. Walk and ride among the vines,

24

learning first-hand (in an easy, fun-to-understand way) about terroir, viticulture and the winemaking process. End the tour with a personalized tasting on the patio, accompanied by a cheese platter to accentuate the flavors of your wines. On this fun tour, you will come away with new knowledge and appreciation of how even a slight difference in location or elevation will dramatically change the characteristics of the wine that is ultimately made from site specific areas, and that is what Chamisal wines are all about.

Environmental Leaders Since 1973 From the time the first vines were planted, it was a paramount goal of Chamisal to not only produce wines that were expressive of individual sites in the area, but just as, or even more important, to respect and preserve the land. Chamisal has always made it a point to farm responsibly. Through the years they have refined, improved and set the example for preserving and protecting the land-terroir. SIP** certified in the vineyards since 2010, in 2016 Chamisal also became the second winery in California to be awarded SIP certification. But, they don’t stop there. Sustainable practices are followed wherever possible, including composting, use of cover crops, drought-tolerant rootstock, moisture-sensors to reduce irrigation, solar panels, and a water-recapture system reclaiming 100% of winery processed water for irrigation needs. Chamisal is an environmental leader paving the way into the 21st century. Step back into the history of the Edna Valley as you experience and drink in the future of winemaking, during your visit to Chamisal Vineyards, as you travel the Ventura Highway BY DON SONDERLING in the sunshine. *Ventura Highway, by the group America, 1973 **SIP: Sustainability in Practice; www.sipcertified.org

Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery Old World Farming and Modern Sustainability Create The Perfect Marriage It’s a cool January day just after the new year and vineyard manager Lee Alegre is standing on a hilltop overseeing the release of 700 sheep into the vineyards. It’s a sight to behold, he says, and an experience that he never takes for granted. His work at Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery is a way of life that brings him great satisfaction through his relationship with the Riboli Family, who own and operate the 103-year-old business. A native of Lodi and a Cal Poly University alumnus, Lee oversees a wide array of grape varieties grown across 1,200 acres on five estate properties in

East Paso Robles, Templeton, Creston and Monterey County. Nearly two decades ago, Lee met the Riboli Family when they bought grapes from one of his vineyard clients. A shared ethic for quality fruit and environmental sustainability made for a perfect match that has improved cultivation and management at all of the company’s vineyards. The family continues to own and operate its original award-winning winery in Los Angeles, where Santo Cambianica, an Italian immigrant, founded the business in 1917. A devout Catholic, Santo avoided bankruptcy

during Prohibition by making sacramental wines. A century later, the family established a second tasting location and wine store in Ontario. Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery’s third tasting room, which includes a bistro and gift shop, is located just off Hwy. 46 East in Paso Robles, not far from the family’s hospitality center and fully sustainable production facility.

Stewardship is key Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery’s membership in the California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA), a Central Coast-based nonprofit created by the Wine Institute and the California Winegrape Growers Association, isn’t just a label; it’s a foundational commitment to farming and doing business in a way that promotes responsible stewardship. In a recent CSWA audit, Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery netted a score of 92 percent for its vineyard practices, a measure that Lee endeavors to perfect. “At all our properties, we trimmed and cleaned up the oak trees, which helps protect limbs and avoid issues

Stefano Riboli: Memories of a Patriarch during a storm,” said Lee. “Being good stewards means taking care of the trees and building the property around them. Had we not cared for and watered them during drought years, they would have died.” Old World farming practices and new technologies are integral, says Lee. “Microbiology testing in the lab, cover crops, and composting for plants and soil really do help. Insectary plantings to encourage beneficial environmental conditions also help. We encourage the bird habitat to thrive, which helps sustain native plants here.” Equally important, water use in the vineyards has declined dramatically through smart practices, such as substituting slowdrip irrigation for wasteful overhead watering. Planting vines in strategic locations also helps minimize leaf transpiration during hotter months.

Livestock in the Vineyard At Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery, 3,000 sheep make for valuable team members. Nature’s little “tractors” not only help with soil rotation by trotting amongst the vines, but they also provide other benefits. “Introducing sheep into the vineyard has been a huge help. Sheep do a ton for weed control by foraging under the vines, which in turn, require less herbicides for the same results,” said Lee of his nibbling livestock. “After harvest and pruning, sheep do their job to fertilize the vineyard without over-compacting the soil. Chickens do their part, too. Three hundred hens have a field day of insect and weed abatement and work the ground yearround.” The winery also recycles grape pomace into its feed for the chickens and sheep. “Through research, we’ve found new ways of composting, working the ground, using cover crops, and incorporating biological aspects into the vineyard,” Lee said. “We want our ranches in the family to be healthy for future generations. It’s not just a job, it’s what I love to do so much. It’s amazing to have BY MELISSA CHAVEZ found a wonderful way to enjoy life.”

Vineyard manager Lee Alegre recently shared fond memories of Stefano Riboli, Riboli Family of San Antonio Winery’s patriarch, who passed away eight months ago at the age of 97. “Stefano was a kind and brilliant person,” said Lee. “The main thing I liked and the way I saw him is that we had a lot in common. He loved animals and had a little farm with chickens and sheep. He got a kick out of it, and we hit It off.” Lee reminisced about planting Stefano’s namesake vineyard, an 83-acre parcel located within the beautiful and peaceful El Pomar District in Templeton. “It was during the 1990s when we started this thing. After we planted the first Cabernet vines, Stefano brought a priest to bless and honor the vineyard,” said Lee. “He always had great stories of how things were done and what he was up against in his lifetime, like Prohibition. Stefano loved every aspect of this place, and he’d often drive out here to check on the progress of the vineyard. “I’m grateful for all of that,” said Lee, “and I’m blessed to be here.”

‘Do not miss’ this Rhône Wine Event

– Says Somm Journal

Hospice du Rhône (HdR)® , an international wine organization based in San Luis Obispo, will host their biannual Paso Robles conference presenting ‘A 2020 Rhône Vision’ on April 23-25 at the Paso Robles Event Center. Uniting the growing Rhône wine community, the three-day event will gather attendees for wine tastings featuring over 150 international Rhône producers, seminars on the forefront of Rhône thinking, an exclusive live auction, delicious meals by Sonoma-based the girl & the fig, and their motto – serious fun. For over 20 years, the Hospice du Rhône Paso Robles event has played host to a diverse group of Rhône personalities, acting as a launching pad for many Rhône-focused wineries and fostered international ties. Hospice du Rhône president, Vicki Carroll, was a nominee for Person of the Year for the 2019 Wine Enthusiast Wine Star Awards; and in 2010 the organization began a partnership with Blackberry Farm in Tennessee, working together on an annual event now in its 11th year. The 2020 HdR Paso Robles Seminar Series will present focused educational opportunities led by producers and moderators striving to broaden knowledge of Rhône varietal wines, and offer memorable tasting experiences. Taking stage the first day will be vigneron Christophe Baron discussing his label, Horsepower Vineyards. With moderator Jeb Dunnuck, Baron will go into detail about his high density, Walla Wallabased vineyards cultivated by draft horses. Also moderated by Dunnuck, a seminar focusing on the Ventoux AOC region in the Southern Rhône will present wines from five of the benchmark estates of the appellation, showcasing the quality and diversity of an AOC currently in the spotlight. The seminar ‘Syrah to Rock the World: The Rocks District of Milton-Freewater’ moderated by Elaine Chukan Brown, will include six estates from one of the most distinctive viticultural regions in the world, which has quickly become a pre-eminent growing area for Rhône varieties. Over 150 international Rhône producers are planned to

pour at each of the event tastings, sharing different wines at both. The Opening Tasting provides an opportunity for producers to highlight a vertical tasting, large format bottles and wines from the 2014 vintage, or earlier. Age-worthy white wines will also take the stage. The Closing Tasting looks to the horizon of ‘A 2020 Rhône Vision' for producers as they focus on pouring current releases, futures and barrel samples. A list of participating Rhône wine producers and importers may be found on the organizations website. This biannual conference could not be made possible without the generosity of sponsors. Supporting the 2020 Paso Robles gathering is Cellar Masters, Epoch Estate Wines, Famille Sylvain Groupe, Farm Credit West, Itek Wine, Moonsprings Vineyards, Onx, Pack n’ Ship Direct, Riedel, Somm Journal, Sunridge Nurseries, Taylor Rental Party Plus, Tonnellerie Cadus, Umpqua Bank and Wine Country This Month. From weekend passes to individual tickets, guests can purchase the option that best fits their interest. Tickets begin at $100 and are now on sale. Larner Vineyard & Winery On your next visit to the charming wine town of Los Olivos, make the Larner Winery Tasting Room a destination adventure. Adjacent to the Los Olivos General Store (filled with all sorts of unique, one-of-a-kind gifts) and Panino (the place to go for hand-crafted sandwiches, salads and soups), Larner’s admittedly petite tasting room makes a huge impression! Just look for the vintage gas pump in front of what used to be a service station building back in the early 1900s!

Wine is About Place

Talk to almost any winemaker, and they will tell you wine is grown in the vineyard, however, that’s just a starting point. You need a special winemaker to coax the nuances and characteristics from each vintages grapes, but to begin, you need climate and soil (terroir) that can produce grapes of exceptional character. Michael Larner’s 34 acres, located in the Ballard Canyon AVA, is just such a place. In fact, the vineyard has been described by the famous wine critic Robert Parker as a California “Grand Cru.” Combine the grapes from this unique site,SANwith Michael MAR COS PASS RD Larner’s passion, knowledge and expertise, 154

and the result are wines that are world class. Larner specializes in Rhône varietals, and on any given visit to the tasting room you are certain to be tantalized and seduced not only by his GSM (a blend of Grenache, Syrah and Mourvèdre), but especially, his Syrahs. The tasting menu will change with availability, as these are small production wines, which sell out quickly. In addition to the Rhônes, there is a very special “plus” that, when available, is a distinctive treat, Malvasia Bianca. This Italian grape, and the wine is, in a word: Elegant. Malvasia Bianca holds a special place in Michael’s heart – as he trained in, and loves Italy; this is Michael’s special homage to the people, land and wine of Italy. When visiting Los Olivos, don’t miss the Larner Tasting Room. As special as Syrah is to Michael Larner, this tasting room and the wines, will find a special place in your wine life. A visit to Larner, first time and every time, is like returning to the warmth and friendliness of your own home and family after being away. >> BY DON SONDERLING

Ventura County Sun, Sand, History and Wine Fun! and premium wines. Take the self-guided tour which is educational and fascinating. Magnavino Cellars, is a mile down the road from Herzog. Entering, you will feel transported into a delightful Italian wine country getaway. Robert and Barbara Wagner have created a haven to come, sit, sip and relax with old and new friends alike, while sampling their assortment of hand crafted award winning wines. On Friday evenings (between 5:008:00pm) you can accompany your tasting with a gourmet cheese platter or small bites as you “time travel” to this Italian retreat, even if just for a few hours. Less than 10 minutes from Magnavino, you’ll arrive at Four Brix Winery in Ventura. Step into this fun, funky tasting room-winery to savor wines made from grapes that are an homage to four great grape regions: Italy, France, Spain and California. Offering a “tapas menu” to accompany your wine tasting, Four Brix is a special “community.” Live concerts and special events are a constant at Four Brix – the fun never stops here. A few blocks from Four Brix is Panaro Brothers Winery. Being fifth generation Italian-American winemakers, the four Panaro Brothers offer a wide selection of mostly singlevarietal wines, grapes sourced from vineyards stretching from Monterey through the Central Coast. You will be warmly welcomed into “la famiglia,” so come sit, sip and

“Ventura Highway in the sunshine, where the days are longer, the nights are stronger than the moonshine, you’re gonna go I know.”* What better reason to go than to spend a rambling day (or two) along the Ventura 101 Freeway (or King’s Highway), from Camarillo to the seaside town of Ventura, (named after Mission San Buenaventura, founded in 1782), sipping wines, enjoying the sunshine and drive as you meet winemakers in their welcoming, friendly tasting rooms.

So Many Tasting Rooms—Not Enough Time (but plenty of wine) With more than 20 tasting rooms to choose from, the Camarillo-Ventura corridor is less than a two-hour drive from central Orange County, and an hour or less from greater Los Angeles and Santa Barbara. Enjoy the fruitful bounty of what Ventura County has to offer – you won’t be disappointed.

Four Not to Miss Travelling north on the 101 toward Ventura, you may want to make your first stop at Herzog Wine Cellars, in Oxnard. Though a well-known larger winery, Herzog (producing Kosher wines), has a fascinating history, and includes in their line-up smaller lot, limited-edition

A Passion for the Plant When you’re traveling through the Central Coast or even living here chances are you may not yet be aware that you’re in one of the premier cannabis growing meccas of California. With the legalized adult-recreational cannabis industry blossoming, canna-businesses are popping up around the state. Santa Barbara County in particular has embraced new opportunities for economic, recreational, and medical use. After issuing the most permits for cannabis cultivation in the state, SB County is licensing manufacturing, testing labs, and dispensaries. Now the creative energy of home gardeners has sprouted a demand for knowledge and know how when it comes to creating their own cannabis gardens. The state allows for six plants to be grown but always, always, check with your local regulations before making any final decisions on your new farm-to-table endeavor. Setting up an indoor garden is another fun, challenging option for the “I could just grow that weed myself” kind of fearless and economically minded cannabis growing crowd. Cultivating your own cannabis plants allows you access to fresh fan leaves for smoothies and juicing, sugar leaves for cooking and topicals plus the incredible joy that comes with harvesting and smoking your own exotic flowers with an insiders knowledge of the organics and process.

Indoor or outdoor, hydro or traditional, sea of green or acres rich in CBD, this is one inspiring, versatile and fun plant to grow! Whether you are just now thinking that having a little home-grown around would be a good thing or you’re an experienced grower wrestling with humidity, having access to superior supplies, essential equipment, nourishing nutrients and rock solid advice is paramount to your success. Thankfully, from Home Depot to No Stress HydroPonics, California and the Central Coast have led the way in commercial and home cultivation stores. Offering a variety of unique nutrients and cutting-edge equipment almost every shop along the Central Coast has the ability to check off all the specialty grow supplies on your list. Now the fun part! What’s on your home grow list: a new pump, Top Booster formula, wall fans, a new filter cover? When it comes to cannabis cultivation the idea of asking grow-related questions can be daunting. We’ve always felt strongly that each and every home grower deserves the chance to shine and be heard when it comes to growing the tastiest, stickiest, indica or sativa flowers or simply vine-ripe tomatoes. With your home growing success in mind, we tackled the realities of finding Central Coast grow shops that not only deliver a plethora of growtastic nutrients, a cornucopia of

quality equipment for all grow levels, but also that much needed and always greatly appreciated good old fashioned Q & A style of customer service. The journey begins on the southern edge of the Central Coast at Green-Coast Hydroponics in the relaxed enclave of Goleta. GreenCoast is easy to find whether your traveling north or south on Hwy 101. Just past a wine shop, tucked behind a used furniture store is ample parking near a large loading bay door. Park and walk in … a copious variety of grow mediums await you. Numerous brands of liquid and powder fertilizers including both traditional and organic nutrients for vegetative and flowering growth stages line the shelves. Equipment for most all home grow setups is readily available in store, which helps with returns or last minute light bulb replacements. The staff was busy working, bringing in products, but were quick to stop and answer any questions and offer to carry out any purchases. We were impressed with GreenCoast and excited to roll onward and explore the next shop on our list. Sweet Harvest Hydroponics & Organics in Arroyo Grande is tucked along a main street with relatively easy curbside parking and plenty of spots in back. At first glance, with the sunny exterior and quaint signage, you might be fooled into thinking this is a charming little spot for a small order of bloom formula. You’re not far off but like us you underestimated this little engine that not only could but does. The staff at Sweet Harvest immediately greeted us with pleasantries and offers of advice or suggestions. As we browsed the well-stocked shelves it was easy to see this was a store that wasn’t in the business of wasting space. Product and equipment are displayed from corner to corner in an easy to find manner and the selection was beyond expectations. As we quietly perused the store a gentleman came in and inquired about trim machine rentals. Again without hesitation the young person behind the counter quickly articulated what was available, how much the cost would be and then gave a tutorial on safety features and cleaning maintenance. It was a learning experience and we left with friendly goodbyes and a promise to return. As the seasons change and flowers turn to fruit it was nice to drive back down the Central Coast, trunk full of new and exciting nutrient combinations, having that warm golden

feeling that whether you’re down along the Riveria of the west coast suddenly without Cal-Mag or you’re up dodging snowy plovers in Santa Maria while searching for rockwool cubes the solutions are not far away. The journey is always gorgeous when the ingredients include traveling, learning, enjoying and growing a wonderful handful of flowers.
