Rogue & Rebel Wine Ghetto

Lompoc Wine Ghetto is a hotbed for up-and-coming winemakers 8

Temperance. Holus Bolus. Camins2Dreams. Flying Goat. Piedrasassi. Fiddlehead. These are just some of the names you’ll come across when researching Lompoc’s famed Wine Ghetto. If you seek an off-the-beaten-path tasting experience on California’s Central Coast, this is where it’s at. What you’ll find are rogue and rebel winemakers tucked away just off the main drag in “The City of Arts and Flowers.” Comprised of thirteen tasting rooms and numerous wine production facilities, the Ghetto is a hotbed for up-and-coming winemakers and has served as a springboard/incubator for some of the most elegant wines produced in Santa Barbara County. How far back does it go? Esteemed winemaker, Rick Longoria, launched the first Ghetto winery back in 1998. The city of Lompoc was founded in 1874 as a Carrie Nation-style Temperance Colony. If Ms. Nation were to stroll through Lompoc nowadays, I wonder what she’d think of the bustling wine scene and thriving dispensaries in this once dry town. A stunning drive up from Orange County or Los Angeles, or down from Paso and SLO, you’ll find wines that are vibrant and bursting with personality, shining a light on the cool climate varietals that thrive in the extraordinary soils of the Santa Rita Hills AVA. I recently had the pleasure of tasting at Temperance Cellars with winemaker Justin Charbonneau. I swear, I could taste the fog in his Pinot Noir. He shared: “The east-west transverse mountains create a funnel that opens up to the Pacific Ocean at the western end of the Lompoc Valley where the Santa Ynez River meets the sea. When it gets hot inland (SY Valley) in the afternoon, the heat rising creates a vacuum effect that pulls the marine layer in from the Pacific Ocean. Lompoc just happens to be right in the middle of that wind funnel. ” Mr. Charbonneau also produces Albariño, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Grenache, Sangiovese, Syrah, and Viognier alongside his neighbors in the Ghetto. It’s worth noting that several of his wines have nabbed scores in the 90s with Wine Enthusiast. Be sure to plan ahead and book your Ghetto tastings in advance with the individual rooms you’d like to visit, as hours vary. Make a day of it and poke around Lompoc—enjoy the cool ocean breezes (bring a sweater), numerous murals by local artists, diverse dining options, pine tree-lined streets, and charming shops. Happy exploring!

California State Parks to Reopen Hearst Castle, May 11 California State Parks plans to reopen Hearst San Simeon State Historical Monument (Hearst Castle). The world-renowned house museum will reopen to the public on May 11, after being closed for two years following the COVID-19 pandemic and severe rainstorms that damaged the access road to the castle in early 2021. “Hearst Castle is a state treasure and we are thrilled to reopen this wonder to the public to enjoy in a safe and responsible manner,” said California State Parks Director Armando Quintero. “We are confident that these once-ina-lifetime repairs and improvements to the road facility will serve countless generations to come.” Located in San Luis Obispo County, La Cuesta Encantada, “The Enchanted Hill” high above the ocean at San Simeon, was the creation of two extraordinary individuals, William Randolph Hearst and architect Julia Morgan. Their collaboration, which began in 1919 and continued for nearly 30 years, transformed an informal hilltop campsite into the world-famous Hearst Castle – an estate that comprises the magnificent 115-room main house plus guesthouses, pools, and 8 acres of cultivated gardens. The main house itself, “La Casa Grande,” is home to Hearst’s extraordinary art collection and has hosted many influential guests, including President Calvin Coolidge, Winston Churchill, George Bernard Shaw and Charlie Chaplin. “They say that the Hearst Castle is a jewel in San Luis Obispo County’s already dazzling crown, and I couldn’t agree more; and Hearst Castle is not only a fascinating place to visit, it serves as a backbone to the North County’s economy,” said State Senator John Laird. “So, I couldn’t be happier about its re-opening, with a safer and more rewarding experience for residents and tourists alike. I want to thank State Parks for their diligent work in getting the Castle re-opened." State Parks will celebrate the reopening of the castle and the delayed 100th anniversary of the construction of the castle by offering a new tour entitled The Julie Morgan Tour as part of the reopening celebration. The tour takes an in-depth look at the life and career of this extraordinary woman, focusing on rarely seen areas of Hearst Castle that highlight her gift for design, and photographic displays of architectural drawings, family photos, and personal items. Tour reservations are strongly recommended and can be made online at HearstCastle.org or by calling 1-800444-4445. For more information about Hearst Castle, visit parks.ca.gov/HearstCastle.

CHARDONNAY Travel to just about any wine region in the world and you’ll find Chardonnay. It’s considered an adaptable winemaker’s grape that can handle almost anything thrown at it. — BY STEPHANIE CULEN — Courtesy of California Wine Institute

C

hardonnay was born in the Burgundy region of France, where it is often referred to as White Burgundy. Recent DNA research from UC Davis in California found that Chardonnay is a result of the cross between Pinot Noir, Pinot Blanc and Gouais Blanc. There are few Gouais Blanc vines remaining and most of them are found in Germany. It is not certain when or where the crossbreeding occurred but estimates conclude that the Romans planted Gouais Blanc in French soils where Pinot Noir were planted and nature then took its course.

The vine was planted in Champagne and the grape became one of the dominant varieties for the famous French sparkling wines. But it is in Burgundy, where the wine gained its reputation as an elegant white wine. Lovely dry white wine expressions of Chardonnay can be found in the cool-climate of Chablis, as well as the notable Côte d’Or, where the finest, and most expensive, wines are often found. The Mâconnais in the south end of Burgundy

also produces larger volumes of Chardonnay that is more affordable. While France is certainly the grape’s spiritual home, especially in the various Burgundy appellations, the grape also produces high quality wine in many parts of the world including the United States, New Zealand, Australia, Chile, South Africa and several other countries. In the United States, it is grown in numerous states from coast to coast with its greatest success found in Sonoma Coast appellations of Northern California. Some of the best Chardonnay in California can be found in Sonoma County mostly from the Russian River Valley, Carneros and Coastal areas. Chardonnay also enjoys great success in the Santa Barbara and Central Coast appellations.

In general, California Chardonnay can be separated into two distinctive styles. One is fuller bodied with rich, juicy fruit that is fermented and aged in lots of new oak. The other can be lean and restrained with more French-style notes and European temperament. This kind can be either oaked and aged in neutral oak, stainlesss steel or concrete. Today, there are about 34 different clones of Chardonnay that offer different expressions of the varietal.

swirl, sniff, sip, savor How to identify wine in the glass The flip side to Chardonnay’s easy growing nature is that its flavors can be quite varied depending on terroir, conditions and winemaking techniques. It is a white wine that can be simple or stoic, youthful and fresh or aged, consumed in the present moment or set aside. The grape can produce a dry wine as well as Champagne, sparkling and dessert wines. It can also be made to taste crisp and stony, buttery and toasty, or brilliantly fresh and sparkly. Expect the wine flavor of the Chardonnay to be representative of where it was grown. For example, Chardonnays from cooler regions will have more acidity and fresher structure leading to more citrus flavors and subtle floral essences. These wines tend to be more lean and crisp. On the other side, the warmer climate Chardonnays will be more sweet and reflect the more tropical flavors of pineapple, mango and guava. These wines tend to be more fuller-bodied with stronger buttery flavors. Overall, expect strong fruity profiles ranging in notes from crisp green apples to baked apple pie, tropical zesty pineapple to lemon curd and pineapple upsidedown cake, and lean minerality to spices and smoke.

What’s in the glass? Would wine in any other glass smell as sweet? White wines are typically served in smaller bowled glasses that preserve the floral aromas and maintain their cooler temperature, but as with all things Chardonnay, the style of the wine will determine the glassware used. A classic Chardonnay glass is considered a “standard” white wine glass. Fuller-bodied Chardonnays, however, may benefit from a larger bowled glass similar to a Red Burgundy or Pinot Noir glass.

how to pair like a pro Chardonnay comes in a wide variety of styles with different structures, levels of sweetness and acidity. Because of this adaptability, there are an equally diverse array of wine and food pairings that work with Chardonnay making it a relatively easy wine to choose for many different dishes. Typically all types of seafood from shell fish to grilled fish pair well with Chardonnay. Depending on the way the seafood is prepared will determine the style of Chardonnay to choose. A richer Chardonnay will work better with a buttered, meatier, fatty fish such as salmon, crab or lobster, while a crisp Chardonnay fits a flaky fish, shrimp or scallops better. Lean, mineral-driven Chardonnay will go well with raw seafood dishes, as well. For meat lovers, white meats such as grilled chicken, smoked turkey, veal with cream sauce and pork are all good pairings with Chardonnay. Again, depending on the preparations of the dish will determine the style of the Chardonnay that works best with the food. In general, the simpler the preparations, the leaner the Chardonnay to pair with it. There is a lively natural acidity in Chardonnay that makes a perfect pairing with a wide variety of hard and soft cheeses, as well as creamy cheeses like baked brie with almond slices and apples. Consider semi-soft mild goat and cow’s milk cheeses such as Humboldt Fog or a simple white mild cheddar cheese with your next glass of Chardonnay. For a completed cheese tray, add cut apples, figs or artichokes to round out the flavor palate. Vegetarians will find Chardonnay goes well with many dishes especially those that have fresh herbs and spices of tarragon, parsley, thyme, lemon zest, marjoram, white pepper mixed with yellow squash, peas, zucchini, asparagus, sun chokes, white mushrooms, truffles, chanterelles and slivered almonds. With its versatility and all-around good nature, Chardonnay is one of the the world’s most popular grape for white wine. It is the fifth most widely planted grape variety and its long standing popularity has awarded the grape its own holiday. Open a bottle of your favorite producer and celebrate Chardonnay Day on May 26! Cheers!

SLO COAST AVA Standing on its Own

O

ver the past decades, much of the San Luis Obispo County Coast was simply “part of” the Central Coast AVA, which stretched from San Francisco to Santa Barbara. Although unique in its own way in terms of terroir, geography, weather, and especially the grape varieties that grow well, the coastal grape growing region of SLO County was without its own designation. That changed as of April 8, 2022, with the official introduction of the San Luis Obispo Coast AVA, becoming California’s 143rd official AVA. California represents over half of all the AVAs in the United States. Ben Schupack, geologist, explains the uniqueness of this new AVA: “The SLO Coast AVA sits on top of what is known to geologists as an accretionary wedge. These are ocean sediments which smashed into the west coast as the Farallon plate was being dragged under the North American plate over geologic time. Soils within the SLO Coast AVA are highly varied due to the complex history of the landscape.” Welcome to the Family, SLO Coast AVA! With more than 97% of the vineyards in this new AVA located within six miles of the Pacific Ocean, this is truly an area whose grapes and wines speak specifically to “place.”

*(American Viticultural Area, or AVA is a delimited grapegrowing region with specific geographic or climatic features that distinguish it from the surrounding regions).

12

It’s About Place Over the last eight years, Aaron Jackson of Aaron Wines was one of the leads to establish the SLO Coast area as its own AVA. Since 2011,

Wine Country This Month: Central Coast

Jackson, through his Aequorea label, has focused on single vineyard Pinot Noir, sourcing grapes from several premier vineyards in this unique coastal region. aaronwines.com Perhaps, summing up this new AVA best, is the description that Stolo Vineyards uses on their website, referencing their Hillside Reserve Vineyard: “Planted by world famous John Alban in 1998 Stolo Vineyards Hillside Reserve Vineyard expresses a sense of place unique to Northern Coastal San Luis Obispo County.” stolofamilyvineyards.com There are over 50 wineries in the new SLO Coast AVA, some large, some small, where you can come to sip the unique expression of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay, and other cool weather (not so commonly grown) varietals such as Sauvignon Blanc, Gewürztraminer, and Gruner Veltliner, to name a few. Some of the many wineries in the SLO Coast AVA include: Absolution Cellars: “Specializing in limited production SLO Coast single clone Pinot Noir, Dirk Neumann likes to boast: “You could say my tasting room, overlooking the water in picturesque Morro Bay, is the most coastal one in the county.” absolutioncellars.com Bailyena/Tangent: The Niven Family first planted vines in 1973, and have been an area and community mainstay, contributing to the region’s history for fifty years. You can sip wines in the tasting room, an original 1909 K-12 Schoolhouse! Baileyana specializes in Burgundian-style Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, while their Tangent label features estate grown, unoaked whites, including Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris, and Viognier. Experiencing these wines truly gives another dimension to the complexity and “specialness” of this SLO Coast AVA. baileyana.com Cal Poly Wine & Viticulture Winery: Cal Poly SLO certainly deserves major “kudos” for their part, with their world class in Enology and Viticulture degree programs. In addition, they have a working vineyard and winery where students learn the winemaking process literally from the ground up. Chamisal Vineyards: The vineyard that started it all. In 1973 Chamisal planted what was the first vineyard in the area, in what would eventually become the Edna Valley AVA. “Chamisal Vineyards strives to produce wines hat express the wild and inspiring beauty of California’s Central Coast, and their 82-acres estate.” chamisalvineyards.com Claiborne & Churchill, founded in 1983 is another family-owned winery. Inspired by the wines of Alsace, the climate and geology of this region was a perfect place for growing Alsatian varietals. Claiborne & Churchill’s initial crush produced 585 cases of Dry Riesling and Dry Gewürztraminer. Today, there are several other small lot varietals produced in this cooler climate region of the SLO Coast AVA. claibornechurchill.com Kynsi Winery, a “newcomer” was founded in 1995, by Don and Gwen Othman, well known in the local community. The origins for the name of Kynsi’s estate Stone Corral Vineyard is steeped deeply in California’s Central Coast history, dating back to Mission days of the late 1700s. The Othman family produces small lot wines, preserving the integrity of the history, and reflecting this special place. www.kynsi.com

We are over the moon about the news and excited to use this designation on our labels, as a large portion of the vineyards we work with are located within the SLO Coast AVA. We will be celebrating this milestone with a bottle of Stephen Ross Blanc de Noir, a delicious wine representing the amazing growing region we are so lucky to be a part of. – STEPHEN ROSS CELLARS

Stephen Ross Cellars: You can taste Stephen Ross Dooley’s wines in their San Luis Obispo winery/tasting room. In addition to their estate SIP Certified Stone Corral Vineyard, focusing exclusively on Pinot Noir, Dooley also contracts with several premium vineyards, including the highly regarded Spanish Springs Vineyard. Dooley has been producing wine since 1994 – with a focus on making wines that reflect the specific micro-climates of the vineyards the grapes come from. He is also committed to sourcing grapes from only SIP Certified vineyards. Now, he can proudly list many of these wines as coming from the SLO Coast AVA. stephenrosswine.com Talley Vineyards: Talley has been a mainstay in the local area since 1948 when Talley Farms was started by Oliver Talley, who first planted avocados, lemons, and cabbages in the Arroyo Grande Valley. This was expanded in the early 1980’s when his son started to plant vineyards. Today, Talley Vineyards is run by Oliver’s grandson, specializing in Pinot Noir and Chardonnay. Their wines have been featured at the White House on many occasions, but the thing the Talley Family is most proud of, is their contribution and involvement in the local community for close to 75 years. talleyvineyards.com These are just a few of the many “new” SLO Coast AVA recognized wineries. So, get out your map, start planning day trips, weekends, and extended trips to explore this exciting new AVA.
