in his own words
MAL MONTOYA President BDC Board of Directors
Hello Berwyn!
B
y all accounts, Berwyn’s business community has started off this year very busy and productive. I would like to begin by sending congratulations to three of our wonderful dining establishments, Autre Monde Café & Spirits, La Notte Café and Paisans Pizzeria and Bar, for being recipients of the Open Table 2015 Diners’ Choice Awards. I would also like to congratulate Culver’s of Berwyn for receiving the prestigious Commitment to Excellence award by the restaurant chain for consistently maintaining a high standard in operations, guest experiences, community relationships and team development. Again, thank you and congratulations to the hard working teams that have earned the right to be called the best at what they do. Although the aforementioned have officially been recognized, it is my sense that many of the fine businesses who call Berwyn home are equally focused at providing the best experience for those who look to them. I draw inspiration from all who live and work in Berwyn, as we at the Berwyn Development Corporation are always looking at ways to improve the “Berwyn experience.” In fact, we have recently engaged a nationally recognized firm to assist us in
evaluating the effectiveness of our programming to ensure that our residential and business communities are well served by our efforts. As a not-for-profit membership organization, we strive to provide the best possible opportunities and quality of life for all who reach out to us. As much as we enjoy receiving recognition and awards, at the end of the day we know that our success will be measured by your success. Speaking of great opportunities, we invite you to come out and meet your neighbors at our sponsored community events. Please take a moment and update your calendar with the upcoming Depot District Mini-Golf Pub Crawl on April 25 from Noon – 6PM, Cinco de Mayo Crawl on May 5 from 5:30PM–10PM, and the always enjoyable Clean Sweep Garage Sale on June 6 from 8AM–3PM. You can get more information and register online for any of these events at WhyBerwyn.com or call us direct at 708.788.8100. Mal Montoya

Berwyn’s Best Pizza Contest Paisans Pizzeria & Bar crowned winner for its signature supreme pizza
T Paisans Pizzeria & Bar Supreme Pizza.
he Berwyn Development Corporation’s Berwyn’s Best Pizza competition crowned Paisans Pizzeria & Bar (6226 W Ogden Ave) a winner for its signature supreme pizza. The dish starts with a thin crust covered in sweet tomato sauce and is filled with sausage, onions, mushrooms and green peppers. It is then topped with a shredded in-house blend of premium mozzarella cheeses and pepperoni. Pizza dough and sauce are made daily from scratch.
Paisans Pizzeria & Bar went up against other local favorites Waldo Cooney’s Pizza, Bubba’s Place, Benny’s Pizza and Nonno’s Pizza. The final competition brought together a group of local judges for a blind taste-test event to compare each specialty pizza slice side-by-side based on flavor, texture and presentation. Owner Pete Fejzuloski reacted to the award, “I’m very excited to have won and thank the people that voted for us. Our whole crew tries its best and works very hard to make a great dining experience. We have a great menu of many dishes besides pizza too, and we’re happy to be here in Berwyn.”

STANDOUT A City that Cares.
Urban and Sophisticated. Classic and Time Tested while Unique.
TRADITION
C
ity of Berwyn goes bold with its shift to classic imagery. These contemporary badges of honor reflect our proud history and bold vision for the future.
Emblems carry a solid sense of place and are marks of civic pride. Berwyn’s emblem loosely references the size and rectangular shape of the city’s geography. The diagonal line represents Route 66 and this structure is pulled into the shape of the custom lettering. The angled ends reference an arrow shape which can be thought of a placement marker saying, “You Are Here.” Bottom Right: Each major commercial corridor has its own mark within the brand system.

I
n partnership with the City of Berwyn, the BDC markets Berwyn regionally and nationally as a prime residential, business and leisure destination. These efforts are supported by an annual integrated marketing campaign. You may have seen the billboards that were part of past efforts. Now in its 9th year, the 2015 Nothing Like a Suburb campaign has refreshed the City’s marketing efforts, refining the visual style and message to better tell the stories of our proud community and well-crafted neighborhoods. The new custom font, emblems and colors complement the craftsmanship and character that set Berwyn apart from an otherwise indistinct suburbia. Research and design were part of a year-long effort with Chicago’s award-winning Firebelly Design. While there is a fresh face, the campaign’s focus on creating a driving desire to visit or move to Berwyn remains unchanged. Our messages maintain that Berwyn is a progressive urban environment that offers unique experiences for those that are looking for a city to call their own.
Nothing like a suburb. IT’S OUR ACTIVE NIGHTLIFE SPOT S, UNIQUE BUNGALOW HOMES, PROGRESSIVE POLICIES & FOCUS ON CREATING MORE INDEPENDENT BUSINESSES THAT SETS US APART FROM ANY OTHER CIT Y.

MORTON WEST HIGH SCHOOL This year, Morton West produced 58 Illinois State Scholars, the highest number in its history. So it comes as no surprise that students continue receiving acceptance letters to their dream university or college. Many of our hard-working students have earned the luxury of choosing between their top schools; like Senior Shannon Fricke who was accepted to the University of Illinois in Urbana-Champaign, DePaul University and Marquette University or Marcel Thomas and dozens of others who have received several offers and scholarships. Our students are attending universities across the country from coast to coast and some will be attending Ivy League schools next fall. With their Morton education, students will continue to excel academically at whichever university they choose. Morton West leadership and staff congratulate every senior on their latest accomplishment and wish them the best of luck next school year.
