The
in his own words
A
s summer is upon us, the beauty of the season is representative of the vibrancy that is being felt throughout the City of Berwyn. The adage, “the only thing that is constant is change,” has never been more apropos for the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC). Continued efforts to further increase the vitality and economic strength in each of our corridors within our fair city are showcased through the openings of a variety of new businesses such as Starbucks, Lavergne’s Tavern, The Outta Space, Oliver’s and the forthcoming Blaze Pizza. In tandem, the launching of the Integrated Marketing Campaign, “Nothing Like A Suburb,” takes our message beyond our borders with the goal of shaping Berwyn as a true destination city to live, work and play. This campaign will protract commercial exposure for Fall Events in each of our corridors such as the Berwyn Route 66 Car Show, Oktoberfest, Taste of Main Street on Cermak Road and the Zombie Walk & Pub Crawl and will also elevate local visibility for citywide promotions such as Berwyn’s Best Burger. Truly, Berwyn is at the center of it all and the place to be for every reason in every season! Much has been said about past and present growth and expansion, but not enough about the BDC’s role in community activism and philanthropy. Thus far in 2016, grants have been awarded to North Berwyn Park District’s “Best of Berwyn Program,” Lincoln Middle School Choir’s “America Sings Music Festival” and Youth Crossroads’ “Youth Social Media Project.” It is not enough to celebrate economic
JOUSEF MONDRAGON President BDC Board of Directors success without being mindful and responsible for representing, embracing and supporting the diversity of every resident and civic organization in our fair city. In keeping with the spirit of giving, the generosity continued with the return of the 4th Of July Fireworks sponsored by World’s Largest Laundromat. Time has a way of creating a multitude of paths leading to many peaks and valleys. Local history has shown that Berwyn continues to be steadfast and progressive in its journey. The journey for the BDC began 33 years ago with its first leader in Ed Karasek. Mr. Karasek’s leadership established the foundation and guiding principles by which this organization operates and holds in the highest regard. His 50 years of service to the Berwyn Park District continues to inspire greatness and social responsibility. It is with great pride that I congratulate and thank Mr. Karasek for his unbounded dedication to the BDC and selfless dedication to the City of Berwyn. All The Best, Jousef Mondragon

Lavergne's Tavern opens in Berwyn's Depot District
MAGAZINE
Lavergne's Tavern recently opened in the old Garv's Inn location at 6546 W. Windsor Avenue.
B
erwyn natives and brothers, Jerry and Jorge Hernandez opened Lavergne’s Tavern on June 21. The brothers have been in the restaurant business for 15 years, also operating Warren’s Ale House in Wheaton and Ellyn’s Tap in Glen Ellyn. Jerry, who attended Berwyn's Hiawatha Elementary and Morton West High School, says the number one goal is for Berwyn residents to feel like Lavergne's is their hometown spot. The name Lavergne's is a nod to the days when Berwyn was split between three townships that included Lavergne. The tavern's interior was designed by Chicago's award-winning architecture firm, Bauer Latoza Studio. The tin ceiling and hardwood floors were restored, and the storied Garv's Inn bar was rebuilt from scratch using reclaimed black walnut. A combination of high-top bar seating and lower tables help keep the atmosphere friendly to both families and those looking to join a date or friends for a night out.

Congratulations to the 2016 Best of Berwyn winners: Mickla Dees (Winner) Emily Bittorf (1st Runner up) and Mia Coronado (2nd Runner up).
The Lincoln Middle School Choir was awarded a philanthropic grant to help fund their choir trip to the America Sings! Music festival in Washington, DC. New Store Openings from the BDC Commercial Loan Program The Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) Commercial Loan Program is operated in conjunction with the City of Berwyn to assist existing businesses and to encourage new business projects. The BDC program aims to assist those who may not qualify for traditional banks loans by offering more flexible terms, while still ensuring a sound investment for the community. Three recent projects have ties to the commercial Loan program: The Outta Space, Lavergne’s Tavern, and New Seneca/Zacatacos. The Outta Space, Inc., a new business venture located at 6840 32nd Street, is a multifaceted collaborative arts venue that will provide in-house exhibitions and performances, gallery shows, shared studio space, classes and workshops for the community. Their loan was used to fund the buildout of the commercial space as well as start-up expenses.

Lavergne’s Tavern recently opened at the former Garv’s Inn location at 6546 Windsor Avenue between the Berwyn and Lavergne Metra stops. The owners of Warren’s Ale House in Wheaton and Ellyn’s Tap in Glen Ellyn, who are originally from Berwyn, purchased this property from the City of Berwyn. The City took ownership of the building through the loan program and recruited Lavergne’s. The former New Seneca restaurant at 6544 Cermak Road was another property the City took ownership of through its loan program. The property was recently sold to the owners of Zacatacos, who operate two longstanding restaurants in Berwyn. They plan to turn this space into a traditional sit-down restaurant.
