BERWYN’S ACTIVE TRANSPORTATION SYSTEM When it comes to transportation, Berwyn lies right in the heart of the Chicagoland transit system. Located just eight miles west of the Loop and in between I-290 and I-55 with convenient access to both, the suburb offers easy access to commuters whether they travel by car, on the CTA’s Blue or Pink Lines, Pace Bus or onboard Metra. Berwyn also stands out because it offers an urban experience through a variety of active transportation modes that also support walking and biking. These options offer ease of access to both downtown Chicago and the far west suburbs.
Downtown Depot District has three stations: LaVergne, Berwyn and Harlem. CTA’s Blue Line is just four blocks north of Roosevelt Rd, while the Pink Line is less than a mile east of Berwyn’s limits on Cermak Rd. Multiple Pace Bus routes tie Berwyn to these stops, along with many other destinations throughout the surrounding area.
Determine your best route with the Regional Transit Authority (RTA) Trip Planner, which allows travelers to plan trips in the Chicago region using public transit (CTA, Metra, and Pace buses and trains) and includes driving, biking and walking directions. A free RTA Trip Planner app is available for download on iTunes and Google Play. Rideshare is widely available through apps like Lyft and Uber, and local cab service is also available.
In recent years, Berwyn has prioritized bike infrastructure, providing dedicated routes that connect to regional routes and trails. Berwyn worked in partnership with the Cook County Department of Public Health through the Model Communities Grant Program and the Active Transportation Alliance on a number of healthy community initiatives to help Berwyn become more bike— and pedestrian—friendly. Berwyn’s Active Transportation Plan initiatives have also ensured safe active travel to Berwyn’s schools and parks. Check out the Active Transportation Network Map to the left on page 6.
Metra-BNSF trains offer a quick commute to counties throughout the Chicagoland area. Berwyn’s

Why Berwyn? Because we’re
#NothingLikeASuburb We believe that Berwyn cannot be blended into suburbia because we are a thriving, self-made city defined by our local pride. It’s our active nightlife spots, unique bungalow homes, progressive policies and focus on creating more independent businesses that sets us apart from any other city. For the past 12 years, the Berwyn Development Corporation has partnered with the City of Berwyn to position our community as a top choice destination for first time and move-up homebuyers, as well as business entrepreneurs and visitors. The objective is to create a driving desire in our audience to visit and live in Berwyn. The #NothingLikeASuburb campaign is tied directly to WhyBerwyn.com and our social media. The campaign also includes an annual installation of outdoor advertising, digital marketing campaigns and direct outreach at Northalsted Market Days. The 2018 Campaign will go live this June and features chef Ambrocio Gonzalez of Las Quecas de Berwyn, chef Brendan O'Connor of Big Guys Sausage Stand, resident and local musician Kara Kesselring and resident and local artist Naomi Martinez, also known as Monstrochika. This year's images were captured in collaboration with local resident and WeOurStory creator Joel Gonzalez!

SHARED TRADITIONS OF
COMMUNITY & SERVICE MacNeal Hospital Celebrates Joining Loyola Medicine
22 | 2018 Berwyn Community Guide | WhyBerwyn.com
Nearly 100 years ago, an unassuming, 10-room frame house was the first home of MacNeal Hospital, founded in 1919 by Dr. Arthur MacNeal. On the cusp of celebrating a century of service, MacNeal–now a 374-bed facility with a robust network of outpatient services and affiliated physicians–also celebrates joining a new family. MacNeal Hospital and its affiliated networks have joined Loyola Medicine, a nationally recognized leader in academic medicine.
MEET MACNEAL HOSPITAL
MacNeal and Loyola come together with a set of underlying values centered around community commitment, personal integrity, compassionate care and providing service to those most in need. As part of Loyola Medicine’s regional health system, MacNeal will continue to provide care that patients and families have known for generations.
LOYOLA MEDICINE AT A GLANCE
In addition to MacNeal Hospital, Loyola Medicine includes Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood, Gottlieb Memorial Hospital in Melrose Park and convenient locations offering primary and specialty care services throughout Cook, Will and DuPage counties. All three hospitals are members of Trinity Health, one of the nation’s largest health systems with 94 hospitals in 22 states. Loyola is ranked among the top three Illinois hospitals by U.S. News & World Report, has six nationally ranked specialties and three high performing specialties. Loyola’s primary, specialty, tertiary and quaternary care providers deliver innovative, research-based care to 83,000 patients annually. As an academic medical center, Loyola trains the next generation of caregivers through its affiliation with Loyola University Chicago Stritch School of Medicine and Marcella Niehoff School of Nursing.
GROWING A VIBRANT LOCAL ECONOMY
Hospitals are a vital part of the communities they serve. Illinois hospitals generate $95.3 billion in state economic impact annually and produce 466,000 jobs. As major employers and consumers of goods, hospitals help support the local economy as well as providing healthcare, education and outreach. MacNeal’s role as a vibrant economic engine for Berwyn and the surrounding communities continues to strengthen. MacNeal has a local workforce of more than 2,000 employees and a medical staff of more than 500 physicians Each job at MacNeal has a ripple effect, creating 1.3 jobs in other sectors MacNeal provides millions of dollars each year in charity care and financial assistance for eligible community members In addition to the positive local financial impact, MacNeal also provides ongoing community support through education, screenings, community partnerships and sponsorships.
COMMUNITY AT THE CORE
MacNeal is privileged to join an organization with a tradition of community commitment as rich as its own. In FY2017, Loyola Medicine provided more than $190 million in community benefit investments, including through charity care and financial assistance, as well as support for health education and research. Loyola also subsidized services responding to community need and provided community benefits through volunteer support, health screenings and other initiatives. As we prepare for the next century of service under a new banner, our mission remains the same– delivering exceptional patient-centered care rooted in compassion.

Berwyn has become a rising star in the western suburbs in retail business development. With the help of the City of Berwyn and Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC), new and existing businesses are thriving. The BDC and City of Berwyn have worked to recruit new businesses to meet the needs of Berwyn residents. In 2018, Cermak Plaza will gain Tony's Fresh Market, bringing in nearly 200 additional jobs. Berwyn Gateway Plaza (BGP) Phase II recently saw the additions of City Barbeque and Mattress Firm and in early 2018, Panera Bread opened up in the third and final phase of BGP. Comcast Xfinity's new concept store will join Panera, as well as an additional retailer. The City and BDC are working on several new leads for this development for the remaining space. Cermak will also gain Legend Tasty House, which specializes in hand-rolled Thai-ice cream. Mayor Robert J. Lovero stated, “The consistent and steady increase in total investment is a positive sign that entrepreneurs and national retailers consider Berwyn to be a good home. We have solid infrastructure, a supportive community and a cooperative, business-friendly environment in our City administration, which makes Berwyn a stand-out location.” In the Depot District, new restaurants Conga Cuban Cafe and Capri Ristorante Due have expanded the dining options for the community and visitors alike. Notable eatery Las Vegas Vietnamese Restaurant opened its doors in late 2017 and early 2018 saw the grand re-opening of community staple Czech Plaza Restaurant. On the "Mother Road"—Ogden Avenue—the redevelopment of Buddy Bear Car Wash brought economic
investment to the corridor, as well as $100,000 in local taxes annually. Amy Crowther, Deputy Executive Director of the BDC, says that while part of the puzzle is attracting new businesses to Berwyn, the other piece is sustaining all of Berwyn’s businesses through marketing and support services. “At the BDC, we work to make sure that businesses in Berwyn are successful. We try to go above and beyond typical Chamber of Commerce activities. We publish Berwyn Magazine on a quarterly basis. This is the only publication that is delivered to every mailbox in Berwyn, so it has amazing reach for our message and advertisers.” The BDC also coordinates the Why Berwyn? marketing campaign, which reaches outside of Berwyn to the Chicago area to remind the region about the benefits of visiting, living and doing business in the near-west suburb. Crowther emphasizes the personalized business support that the BDC offers neighborhood businesses. “We host seminars, afterhours events and a monthly women’s group among a host of other programs. We try to act almost as a concierge service to provide personalized connections between businesses and resources.” At the end of the day, the City of Berwyn and the BDC are always at work for Berwyn’s business community. By attracting, retaining and supporting Berwyn’s businesses, the BDC gives them the marketing programs and services they need to succeed.

The BAABs Awards Honor Local Business Champions Berwyn’s greatest asset has always been the dedication of our exceptional people. The Berwyn Development Corporation hosts Berwyn Above & Beyond, aka the BAABs, which is an evening of cocktails and accolades where the community comes together to honor the year’s business champions while celebrating the entire business community. And the awards go to…
EDDIE GARCIA, 33RD CHARLES E. PIPER AWARD WINNER
Eduardo “Eddie” Garcia was born in Pachuca, Hidalgo and is a graduate of St. Joseph High School. He is a first generation MexicanAmerican born to proud immigrant parents, Florencia Rosas and Aristeo E. Garcia. The Garcia family migrated from Mexico City to the United States in 1989 when Garcia was only 5 years old.
A strong work ethic was instilled in Garcia by his parents at an early age, beginning with his first job at the age of nine. At 21, he attained his Real Estate License, sold his first property six months later and fell in love with the real estate business. In 2012, Garcia founded Realty of Chicago, signing his first agent without an office and from his truck at a time when the market was deteriorating. In 2017, Realty of Chicago closed $126 million in sales and has grown to over 80 agents with three offices located throughout the Chicagoland area. Garcia’s core beliefs all share the idea of community as a focal point. He believes that “building a successful company is great, but building a successful company that can give back is even greater.”
BERWYN’S CULVER’S, 8TH GEORGE W. ASHBY AWARD WINNER
Culver’s will be recognized as the recipient of the annual George W. Ashby Award for Business Excellence. The award is a local honor named after one of Berwyn’s distinguished early architects. It is given annually to one Berwyn-based business.
Franchisee Guy Hollis was attracted to Berwyn because of the sense of pride he felt from residents. Hollis rode his bike through town to get to know the area better and knew the location was perfect for a brand new Culver’s. In 2011, Berwyn’s Culver’s was built on Roosevelt Road, replacing a vacant mixed use space. Culver’s invests in the community that invests in them, giving back 1% of their total sales through various Berwyn-centric endeavors including community-focused events and fundraisers, providing jobs to residents, donations to local schools—even donating a scoreboard to the Berwyn Park District. They have participated in notable local events like Berwyn’s Oktoberfest, where brand mascot Scoopie makes highly anticipated appearances in the family pavilion. “We were excited to work with the Berwyn Development Corporation because they really helped us become familiar with the community and where to get involved,” said Hollis.

OGDEN AVENUE Ogden Ave is Berwyn’s stretch of Historic
Route 66 – the Mother Road – designed for automobiles when the car was king of American culture. One of the first eastern suburban communities along this stretch, we celebrate our heritage at the Berwyn Route 66 Gift Shop, the annual Berwyn Route 66 Car Show (August 25, 2018) and through our four scenic byway wayside exhibits. Streetscape improvements incorporate a 1950s automotive theme for the now thriving business highway that is home to a number of auto-oriented businesses like Berwyn Kia and Ogden Top & Trim, one of the winningest and most diversely capable auto and marine upholstery shops in the nation. Make it a point to stop at Berwyn’s Toys & Trains, a toy and model train store treasured for its stock of 20,000+ toy brands, including vintage toys, as well as an amazing selection of model trains. The shop features a toy train landscape with interactive buttons that can be enjoyed by children and adults.
For those in need of a pit stop, look no further than some of our award-winning restaurants. Cigars & Stripes BBQ Lounge is a neighborhood staple filled with Route 66 kitsch, live entertainment, craft brews on tap, excellent BBQ with homemade sauces and a fine selection of cigars. Hit up Paisans Pizzeria & Bar for a taste of their award-winning pizza, burgers, salads and wings all housed in a family-friendly experience. If locale and food offerings aren’t enough, come out for the amazing decor. Paisans has created a kitschy, Route 66 feel, complete with custom motorcycles and a dragster on display! For a more intimate and traditional pizzeria experience, Michael Anthony’s Pizzeria & Bar is the place where you can get a classic slice of pizza, grab a beer and watch the game with locals. On the fast-casual side, we recommend stops at Novi’s Beef, proud winner of Chicago’s Best Beef; El Meson Express for their Taco Alhambra (it has bacon!); an original slider from the oldest White Castle on Route 66; or a timeless Mr. Submarine sandwich (go “super” for extra meat) on fresh baked Turano bread from Chicago’s original submarine franchise.

Pets in the
Parks The Berwyn Park District Board of Commissioners adopted Resolution R-18-02 which amends the Berwyn Park District General Use Ordinances effective May 1, 2018. The amended ordinances now provide for park users to bring domesticated animals and pets into permitted areas of parks operated by the Berwyn Park District. The change in the ordinance was based on several factors including a survey conducted in 2017 in which more than 70% of the respondents favored allowing leashed pets into the park system. Effective May 1, 2018 people may bring domesticated animals and pets into the park system, with said animal on a leash with a maximum extension of 6 feet and the owner or person must be in-control of the leash at all times. There will areas where animals are prohibited including playgrounds, pool, tennis courts, waterways, botanical areas, or sports fields. Animals may not be allowed to run at large (off leash). Violators are subject to a $100.00 fine and four (4) hours of community service at the park district. All current State of Illinois and Cook County animal requirements are also in effect. Pet owners are also reminded not to let their pets interfere with natural wildlife and migrating species who enjoy the protection of both federal and state laws.
As part of the District’s efforts to be more pet friendly, the District will be installing pet waste bag dispensers and additional signage in all of the parks.
The Karban Park Dog Park will remain as the only off leash permitted areas within the park system which is governed under rules prescribed by the Cook County Animal and Rabies Control. Due to the county requirements, the cost of an annual Karban Park Dog Permit is $35.00 per year. More information related to Cook County animal related regulations is available at www.cookcountyil.gov/agency/animal-and-rabies-control-0.
The District will be monitoring pet owners for regulation compliance but believes that most pet owners are responsible and will self-govern themselves.
The entire General Use Ordinance is available for inspection at www.berwynparks.org.

North Berwyn Park District's "Best of Berwyn" Mural
Berwyn has HEART Berwyn is a creative hub of the western suburbs with an ever-growing population of artists, musicians and performers. the North Berwyn Park District’s Executive Director Joe Vallez. Now in its eleventh season, 16th Street Theater has become one of the area’s most intimate and highly regarded presenters of engaging and thought-provoking new plays. Locals can also grab tickets to a production at Jedlicka Performing Arts Center (JPAC), a professional non-equity theatre on the campus of Morton College. With over thirty seasons under their belts, JPAC has become known for Chicago premieres of new and rarely produced work.

It’s hard to pinpoint whether so many artists are drawn to live and work in Berwyn because of numerous arts-dedicated venues here or if so many exciting venues are thriving due to the large number of creative-minded people in town. Regardless of who came first, all of Berwyn benefits from the community’s focus on the arts. A number of independent artists in the visual and performing arts make up the creative fabric of Berwyn. A few who are making their mark include painters, sculptors, comic creators and music aficionados. Joel Gonzalez captures the human spirit on camera as WeOurStory and has a Berwyn-centric Instagram page (@storiesofberwyn). Jessy Laubis is a local artist who coordinates the Craft & Vintage Market at Friendly Tap—you may recognize her from the 2017 Why Berwyn? Marketing Campaign! Raf Nieves, also known as Unca Raffy, is a local artist who specializes in drawing Berwyn’s buildings and also creates comics. Naomi Martinez creates unique paintings, zines and knit art out of her home studio in Berwyn. This year, she is highlighted in the Why Berwyn? Campaign. Founded late 2007, Berwyn’s only professional equity theater is the collective brainchild of Artistic Director Ann Filmer and 34 | 2018 Berwyn Community Guide | WhyBerwyn.com
Berwyn has long been home to a wide variety of musical venues that attract people from throughout the Chicago area. Stalwart FitzGerald’s Nightclub has a national reputation for American roots music from jazz to zydeco and Friendly Tap has a solid following as a juke joint with a small stage for local performers. Versatile venue Wire brings an eclectic mix of performances from acts with both strong national and local followings. The live entertainment continues as you head south into Berwyn. Horse-Drawn Productions showcases their artists and their students locally at spots like Cigars and Stripes BBQ Lounge. Cigars and Stripes also regularly hosts their own calendar of eclectic stand-up comedy and live music shows and the Depot District’s darling, The Outta Space, brings live music and variety shows to the area. Last but not least, Harlem Avenue Lounge has history and great acts on its side, attracting a notable lineup of Chicago’s finest Blues musicians. For those looking to hone their musical skills, Berwyn offers plenty of opportunities. Music lessons are available at HorseDrawn Productions, Wire, Above and Beyond Music and the Friendly School of Folk Music. Eric Yoder and his wife Darlene operate the music recording studio

at Horse-Drawn Productions and have expanded their focus to offer lessons in piano, guitar, violin, drums, dj’ing and recording. An accomplished musician, producer and engineer, Yoder notes that one of the benefits of living in Berwyn is how connected it is to the music community. “That is one of my favorite things about Berwyn. Everything is connected. It’s like a really big small town.” Along with independent artists, Berwyn is home to many who are dedicated to building the community arts scene. Aaron Mitchell, founder of The Outta Space and Berwyn Arts & Music (BAM), was drawn to live in Berwyn due to the thriving arts scene. Mitchell works to foster the arts throughout the community by hosting and planning a variety of events in his venue that doubles as a social meeting place for artists of all persuasions and ages. Berwyn also has some truly unique pieces of public art created by Berwynners, for Berwynners! A group of Berwyn students helped to bring the North Berwyn Park District’s cultural arts center to life by painting a mural on the side of the building to showcase their community pride. The mural, located on the south side of the building at 16th Street and Clarence, was painted by 12 “Best of Berwyn” students in August 2016. The then-eighth graders worked with professional muralist Traz Juarez to showcase a celebration of the City’s diversity and many artistic opportunities. In 2015 and 2016, the Outta Space collaborated with teens from local non-profit Youth Crossroads and resident adult artists from BAM on a unique beautification project, Paint the Plugs. This collective transformed ten fire hydrants – or “plugs” – along Roosevelt Road between Wenonah and East Avenues. In late Summer 2017, creative youths collaborated with Youth Crossroads and muralist Sam Murillo to craft a 20' by 20' mural on the side of Heritage Middle School. From diversity to landmarks to education, equality and love, the students were able to create a visual for others reflecting how they envision the community of Berwyn. The “Gatekeepers” is a representation of how our youth inspires our community and how our community inspires our youth.

The City of Homes
Although the Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District’s notable brick homes continue to be popular with homebuyers and have landed the collection onto the National Register of Historic Places, the charm of all of Berwyn’s architectural styles, its genuinely welcoming neighborhood feel and the ease of transportation into and out of Chicago have built the Berwyn real estate market into one of the hottest markets in the near-west suburbs. Here's a peek at just some of the unique housing styles Berwyn has to offer first-time homeowners, empty-nesters and everyone in between. Add your own DIY charm or restore your home to it's old school roots!
Bungalow
The bungalow style that Berwyn has is essentially a Chicago-style bungalow on a bigger lot. Berwyn’s builders wanted to use this style of home throughout Berwyn because of the affordability, toughness and aesthetic. Berwyn’s bungalows, for the most part, were built around the same time in the 1920s to 1930s. Although many bungalows on a block were built by the same workers, each house in Berwyn will always be unique and different from its neighbors. The roof line, style of shingles, limestone accents and even the style of decorative face brick is different from house to house. The bungalows in Berwyn are also full of ornamental details such as tiled roofs, stained glass windows, checkerboard brick patterns and intricate limestone insets.

American Foursquare
Tudor Revival
American Foursquares are unique in their effective use of space and were some of the first homes built in Berwyn. They were popular to build during the 1910s and were chosen because of their simplicity compared to their Victorian counterparts. Common features of an American Foursquare are two-and-a-half stories, large overhanging eaves, and a large front porch with wide steps. They tend to be built on larger lots, providing residents with plenty of space to plant and craft beautifully landscaped front lawns.
Tudor Revival style houses are some of the most recent houses to be built in Berwyn, starting to appear in the 1940s. These homes tend to sit on smaller lots than their bungalow neighbors and were built as a more affordable option. Tudor Revivals boast a very steep pitched roof, intersecting gabled roofs, and are always 1.5 stories high. Some have small front porches but many also feature no porch at all. Berwyn’s Tudors tend to feature intricate stonework that frames different parts of the house.
French Normandy
National Register of Historic Places
After World War I, the French Normandy architecture style grew popular among the growing middle class in America. Inspired by French chateaus, these houses were built on a smaller and more affordable scale. French Normandy houses can feature a round stone tower topped by a conical roof usually serving as the entrance or a design feature, arched doorways, steep roof pitches, high ridge lines, dormers and half-timbering.
Part of the Berwyn appeal is the city's location. Commuting to Chicago is a breeze with easy access to I-55, I-290, Metra, Pace and CTA. What's more, Berwyn is affordable—the average home sales price is $200,500! Looking to purchase? Check out our list of real estate agents on WhyBerwyn.com or flip to page 70!
In addition to the Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District, Berwyn has two houses on the National Register of Historic Places—the Silhan House (pictured top) and Arthur Dunham House (pictured bottom). These homes serve as perfect examples of the styles in which they were built— Streamline Moderne and Prarie School respectively. WhyBerwyn.com | 2018 Berwyn Community Guide | 41
