A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT As we wrap up another great year here in Berwyn, our fair City has had yet another year Full of Character to look back on. The Corrida del Mariachi 5K Race/Walk really got us moving this summer and we can’t wait to welcome it back every year as another Berwyn tradition. The WeatherTech® Berwyn Route 66 Car Show sponsored by City Barbeque had another successful year and brought out more than 600 cars and over 20,000 visitors. Last but not least, Berwyn’s Oktoberfest presented by Loyola Medicine | MacNeal Hospital was a blast and was—as always—the best way to kick off the fall season. Moving into the holiday season, there are plenty of family-friendly events coming our way. Check out the community calendar on WhyBerwyn.com for a full listing of cheerful events around town! Since July, the Berwyn Development Corporation proudly presented two philanthropic grants for the Hiawatha Elementary School STEAM Lab & Mini Museum and Solutions For Care Senior Summerfest. The City of Berwyn has also welcomed many new businesses to our community. With the continuous development of our business community, our fair City offers both our residents and out-of-towners new and exciting shopping opportunities and services. Along with the success of our community events and businesses, other accomplishments to be proud of this year include the resolution commemorating Hispanic Heritage Month from September 15 to October 15 and the recent proclamation declaring October as LGBT History Month in Berwyn. Berwyn welcomes diversity with open arms, and this gives our community a few more exciting traditions to celebrate each year. #BerwynPride!

Having said that, please enjoy your holiday season in our fair City and Happy Holidays from all of us here at the BDC!

HIAWATHA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL STEAM LAB & MINI MUSEUM Hiawatha’s STEAM Lab allows students to carry out explorations and curricular extensions in science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics. The project aims to support the STEAM Lab by including components of a children’s museum in the school, including a magnetic wall, a sensory center, ramps, gears, a light lab, ropes and pulleys, Makerspace materials, and more that will help students develop a sense of inquiry-based learning. In this manner, discoveries can be organically made and guided by collaborative conversation with teachers and peers.

SOLUTIONS FOR CARE SENIOR SUMMERFEST Solutions For Care organized the inaugural Senior Summerfest along with local organizations and businesses that serve Berwyn’s older adults. Senior Summerfest was a monthlong celebration for active older adults, featuring a collection of events that took place at several locations throughout Berwyn. RETHINKING HIGHER EDUCATION DR. STAN FIELDS

With the new year kicking off at Morton College, we’re excited to welcome 581 new students to our student body. As quickly as Morton College’s campus will be filled with students eager to learn and seek opportunities, high school seniors will begin their final year faced with decisions that will affect the rest of their lives. It’s not an easy decision for an 18-year-old. Our society places an enormous amount of pressure to determine a career, choose where to pursue that path and finally find a way to pay for it. As parents and students weigh the traditional higher education options over the next year, we encourage them to consider Morton College. Our graduates are well known across the country in the arts, business, government, science, and education worlds. In its 94 years, Morton College has grown to offer 39 Career Certificates, 17 Associate Degrees in Applied Science and 5 Transfer Program Degrees. In 2018, Morton College awarded 639 degrees and certificates. Nearly 33 percent of our students are enrolled in a transfer program. This two-year curriculum was specifically designed for students transferring to a four-year college in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. Outside of the transfer program, we accommodate students at the level of education they want to pursue. Thirty percent of our students are enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science program with the intent of joining the workforce upon graduation. Additionally, nearly 18 percent of our students are taking adult education or ESL courses. We also offer online courses for students to access their education when it fits in their schedule.

12

We require all introductory students to take an English and Math placement test. This exam helps students determine their beginning course level. Additionally, we offer a College Study Seminar to help the traditional college student as well as the continuing education student with academic and personal skills needed to make their college experience successful and rewarding. Along with flexible class schedules that fit students’ educational needs, Morton College is reasonably priced and provides many financial aid opportunities. Over 125 students received some form of financial aid through scholarships offered by the Morton College Foundation and other organizations affiliated with the college. Qualifying students could also be eligible for work study programs offered by federal, state and local organizations. Our small but involved student body, measuring nearly 6,700 students, creates a traditional university feel across campus. There are multiple ways for students to get involved and meet their fellow classmates. Outside of campus-facilitated events, such as Welcome Week, student success workshops, and regional and national conferences, there are 17 active clubs and organizations ranging in interests. Participating students have the opportunity to join these organizations and meet new people, as well as build their resume and add to their leadership or team experiences. If you think Morton College might be a good fit for you, your son or daughter, or someone you know interested in continuing their higher-level education, I encourage you to call our Admissions office at (708) 656-8000, Ext. 2250 to schedule a visit. You can also visit our website: Morton.edu. We’d love to welcome you to the Panther family.

OUTDOOR ART Go on a walking tour and check out all the jaw-dropping murals, old and new alike! See Berwyn’s largest sombrero or snap a pic with the mural at Lavergne’s Tavern before heading in for dinner. You’ve probably seen walls throughout the Depot District come to life thanks to the Berwyn Public Art Initiative, and you can find mural collaborations done by local youth, community groups and city officials throughout Berwyn.

LOCAL ART ON DISPLAY Heading for dinner or a night out? Check out The Outta Space for artwork to admire and even purchase as you sip on something delicious and enjoy your favorite local band, or gaze at the local art featured at Flapjack Brewery complemented by locally crafted brews and delicious wood-fired pizza. Add unique pieces to your home—head to the Craft & Vintage Market at Friendly Tap, organized by local artist Jessy Laubis, on the third Saturday of the month (Feb.-Dec.) and peruse plenty of handcrafted items by locals, or get a custom painting by local artist and resident Antonia Ruppert Fine Art.

MUSIC & THEATER Berwyn is home to tons of local talent—and you can catch them at a show at your local music venues like FitzGerald’s Nightclub & Sidebar, Wire, Friendly Music Community, The Outta Space and more. If you’re in the mood for a night at the theater, check out an engaging and thought-provoking play at 16th Street Theater during their highly anticipated 2019 Season.

START ‘EM YOUNG! Whether your little ones want to belt out their favorite tunes, learn to play the ukulele or get hands-on with painting, Berwyn has plenty of options for your wee ones. The North Berwyn Park District serves as a one-stop shop, offering a variety of dance, music and art programs ranging from photography to sculpture and more. Sign up for one of four Kindermusik Programs available at the Friendly School of Folk Music or check out Above & Beyond Music Store for ukulele classes for little ones as early as 7 years old. If they’re in the mood to boogie, Peggy Rose Academy of Dance and Acrobatics and Chance to Dance will get their little feet moving. Music or dance not their thing? Your little ones can learn to crochet with Monstrochika, a local artist and resident featured in this year’s WhyBerwyn? Integrated Marketing Campaign who is hosting her very own Little Monster Art Skool.

Old Fashioned Candies Since 1969 this family-owned company has been manufacturing and selling candy and became a Berwyn staple after moving here in 1976. Now in the care of the second and third family generations, Old Fashioned Candies is pumping out more delicious handcrafted treats than ever. If you’re in need of handmade party treats or in the mood for gourmet popcorn, this is your one-stop shop. @OldFashionedCandies Berwyn Betty’s Bath & Body Seven years ago, Stephanie began making bath products with her autistic daughter as a labor of love. Stephanie noticed that while her daughter, like her, enjoyed the beautiful smells and soft lather of their bath products, they were going through bars of soap faster than they should. Through much trial and error, Stephanie developed a line of bath soaps and bath bombs that she could manufacture together with her daughter. Stephanie is very proud of the business she has built with her family as she believes that her shop will help spread imagination to every child, no matter their circumstance. “My goal is not to hire people to make soap, but rather make soap to employ people with disabilities,” shared Stephanie. Grab your family and get your imagination going—sign up for one of Berwyn Betty’s Bath Bomb Making Workshops. @BerwynBetty

Little Buddha Established in 2018 by local resident Daisy, Little Buddha is based on finding holistic ways to feed the mind, body and soul. Daisy makes handmade organic products without all the chemicals. All of the products are made with natural and organic ingredients, and fragranced only with essential oils. @LittleBuddhaByDaisy Flapjack Brewery Established in 2017 by brothers Paul and James, this small-batch brewery serves up two flagship beers that are available year-round as well as an abundant amount of styles showcased on their 8 rotating taps. Come enjoy a Flapjack beer accompanied by wood-fired pizza and other tasty eats! Check out their 7 Days of Delicious special on page 4. @FlapjackBrewery

Hope Houses Workshop This family-owned business on Roosevelt Road believes that a child’s brightest future can be unlocked through play, an idea that is the building block for their doll house manufacturing and retail business. Each house is handmade by the family behind Hope Houses, and for every house sold, another is sent to a child in need. What started as a family hobby in the garage blossomed into an initiative that brings imagination to every child, “We say that ‘hope’ is a belief that no matter their circumstances. you can realize what you imagine.” @HopeHousesWorkshop @LoveHopeHouses

Proksa Park

It’s More Than Trees The Berwyn Park District continues improving Proksa Park with new activities and improvements. A grant from the ComEd Green Region Program provided funding for the Proksa Park Butterfly Garden, with more than 1533 pollinator plants and serves as both a pollinator oasis and an interpretive learning opportunity. The garden is highlighted by the two large Butterfly benches. The District has also been working on the renovation of the ponds, which was funded in part by an Open Space Land Acquisition and Development Grant for the Illinois Department of Natural resources. Amenities include a nature themed play area, interpretive signage, and a botanical walk. The water features and running stream provide an oasis for migratory birds. Increased storm water holding capacity helps reduce local flooding during peak sewer loads. Lastly, the District constructed the Shadow Creek 9-Hole Disc Golf Course that provides social interaction and low impact physical exercise opportunities. Shadow Creek was funded through the generous support of the Berwyn Development Corporation, MacNeal Hospital, Paisans’s Pizzeria, and the generosity of local residents. So with all of the ongoing improvements, why not come out to Proksa Park and experience the best back yard in Berwyn-Where Park Meets City.

Healthy Reasons for this Holiday Season

TOWNSHIP OF BERWYN PUBLIC HEALTH DISTRICT The Holidays are quickly approaching…. Berwyn Township is seeking individuals, businesses, and organizations for our Adopt A Family Program. We work in close partnership with our schools to determine which families may be in need of additional assistance. This program pairs those willing and able to help others with those within our community that need a little extra help during the holidays. Please consider sponsoring a family and making someone else’s holidays a little brighter. We are also collecting new or gently used winter coats, hats, scarves and gloves to help keep Berwyn families warm. Donations can be dropped off at the Township offices: 6600 W 26th St, 2nd Floor. Please contact the Berwyn Township at 708-788-6600 for additional information.

Hollywood has always capitalized on Christmas— seeing Jimmy Stewart’s thrill at returning to Bedford Falls is as much a part of the holidays as decorating a tree, exchanging gifts and enjoying extra time with family. Take a break from your holiday preparations and join us to enjoy this video recap of some of the best (and some of the lesser-known) holiday-themed cinematic gifts, and even test your memory with a Hollywood Holiday Trivia Challenge!
