Now in its 6th year, I am pleased to share our annual Community Resource Guide, a publication that provides our community, neighbors, and prospective residents a glimpse into what makes Berwyn Nothing Like a Suburb. This past year presented challenges unlike any we have faced in recent memory. But the last year also showed Berwyn for its true character: tough, dynamic, innovative, and caring. As vaccinations continue to roll out and the pandemic recedes, we encourage you – as you are willing, comfortable, and able – to get out and explore some of the many assets Berwyn has to offer.

Within 4.4 square miles reside almost 56,000 residents, making Berwyn the densest township in Illinois. This creates an opportunity for residents and visitors alike to explore our community. With access to public transit and a high walkability score (73, or Very Walkable, according to Walk Score) Berwyn is easily accessible to all.

With the health and safety of our residents in mind, we made the tough decision to cancel last year’s signature events. However, given the progress made towards inoculating Berwynites, we are pleased to announce the return of Berwyn’s events season for 2021! Please keep in mind that our calendar is tentative, and we will pay close attention to guidance from the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) and the US Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Our businesses continue to survive and thrive in large part because of you! It is important—now more than ever—to recognize these champions and celebrate all they do for our community. s I look back at my Mayor’s message from last summer, I am truly reinvigorated by the tenacity of Berwyn residents, businesses, and essential employees to rebuild and recover as a community. This has undoubtedly been difficult for so many, in different ways. While we may not yet be out of the woods, it is my hope that with our continued diligence in adhering to the recommendations from public health officials, we will turn a corner and better days are ahead. As we forge past the one-year mark of the pandemic crisis, I am incredibly proud of the hard work of our businesses, schools, parks, and open spaces in maintaining important protocols to keep our community healthy while moving our local economy forward. Summer is always a time of the year when people want to safely come together and celebrate with family and friends. I am extremely grateful for the many vaccination sites located within our community that are actively providing this critical resource to all residents, while prioritizing our senior population and those most at risk. The whole community becomes protected when we all do our part. I, along with my administration, have all been vaccinated without any complications or issues. When we get vaccinated, we contribute to making our city healthy by making informed decisions that have a greater impact on our community as a whole. I look forward to seeing the residents of Berwyn as the City will begin hosting events again starting with our Independence Day Fireworks Celebration on July 2nd at Morton West High School, and continuing with our Back to School Picnics, 5K Mariachi Run, Fiesta Nuestras Raices, Oktoberfest, Brewfest and block parties. Although safety guidelines will be in place, these events will allow our community to come together once more.

Lastly, as the weather warms up in the summer, more people are expected to be out and about. As part of my commitment to creating a welcoming and safe city for everyone, I will continue to focus on partnerships with our Berwyn Police Department and community organizations to expand Neighborhood Watch initiatives throughout the entire city. I recognize the important role our community plays in keeping us safe and believe that these partnerships will foster trust and unity with the goal of reducing crime and violence. RESIDENT GUIDE BACKYARD CHICKENS

Berwyn City Council lifted the local ban on chickens in March 2016 with an amendment to its Offensive Keeping of Animals ordinance. Backyard chickens are legal to keep in residents’ backyards. Learn more at Berwyn-IL.gov.

DOG AND CAT REGULATIONS

City ordinance limits the number of pets (combination of cats and dogs) to three (3) per building or using the same premises. All dogs and cats must be licensed with the City at a fee of $10 per year, per pet, due in June. Applications are available at City Hall and on the city’s website: Berwyn-il.gov/forms.

This system enables the City of Berwyn to provide you with critical information quickly in a variety of situations, such as severe weather, unexpected road closures, missing persons and evacuations of buildings or neighborhoods. If you do not have access to the Internet or need assistance registering for emergency notifications, leave a message at 708-749-6563 and a representative will call you to complete your registration.

BUILDING REGULATIONS

Residents must obtain a permit from the Building Department located in City Hall before proceeding with building repair or remodeling projects. All contractors and subcontractors must be licensed and bonded with the City before permits can be processed. Information is available through the Collector’s Office at 708-788-2660.

COMPLIANCE INSPECTIONS

At the time a property is listed for sale with a realtor or by owner, the property must be inspected for compliance with all city ordinances. If violations do exist, this ordinance allows the seller adequate time to rectify any problems prior to sale, thereby expediting the closing on the home.

PERMIT REGULATIONS FOR HOME/ BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT & CONSTRUCTION

Permits are required on all improvements made to buildings and property, including but not limited to, the following work: electrical and plumbing; concrete or asphalt; HVAC or boiler; all demolition (including permit for dumpsters); dormers or additions; interior and exterior structural alterations; garages; replacement windows and glass block; porches, decks, and steps; sewer replacement; fences and gates; swimming pools and hot tubs; roofing; kitchen and bathroom remodeling; cabinet removal and replacement; and drywall. Permits are not required for inside painting, cleaning, appliance installation or replacement and floor coverings. CURFEW

Persons under the age of 18 are not allowed to be in public places between 10:30PM and 6AM on Sunday through Thursday nights and between 11:30PM and 6AM on Friday and Saturday nights. Exceptions are provided for those with a parent or legal guardian and those persons going to or from their place of employment.

BERWYN CITY COUNCIL

City Council meetings are held at 8PM every 2nd and 4th Tuesday of the month at City Hall. All residents are welcome to attend. Meetings are live-streamed through the City of Berwyn’s YouTube page: www.youtube.com/cityofberwyn

LIBRARY CARDS ELECTRONIC & HAZARDOUS WASTE RECYCLING

Residents receiving Waste Management services through the City of Berwyn will be able to utilize At Your Door. By contacting Waste Management, a resident can schedule a pick-up of home-generated special materials (ex: automotive products, garden chemicals, paint products, electronics, mercury containing items, household cleaners, and sharps, needles and lancets) at no extra cost. GARBAGE PICK-UP

Place bagged household garbage in the waste containers provided by Waste Management for weekly pick-up. The disposal of large household appliances, building materials, or other large accumulations of materials can be arranged directly with Waste Management at 800-964-8988 or at home.wm.com/berwyn.

RECYCLING & YARD WASTE

Recycling bins are available from Waste Management (800-964-8988) or home.wm.com/berwyn for clean recyclable items such as aluminum cans, glass bottles and jars, tin cans, magazines and newspapers. Pickup is the same day as garbage pick-up. Yard waste, including grass clippings and leaves, may be placed in large brown paper bags, or in your own plastic garbage cans (32 gallons or less in size) identified with a Yard Waste sticker (provided free at City Hall). Yard waste is picked up from April 1 through December 31. Do not rake leaves into the street as they block storm drain sewers and damage street sweepers. This violates Berwyn City Ordinance 672.04 and may result in a ticket with a fine up to $750. Recycling items must be placed loosely in recycling bin.

Library cards are available at no charge to residents. Residents must provide documentation to verify their identification and residency. For more information, call the Berwyn Public Library at 708-795-8000.

METROPOLITAN WATER RECLAMATION DISTRICT OF GREATER CHICAGO (MWRD)

Multiple locations • mwrd.org MWRD offers rain barrels for purchase. For more information and to place your order, visit mwrd.org/rain-barrels. MWRD’s Restore the Canopy program offers free oak saplings that can be picked up at their water reclamation plants every Wednesday from 9am-12pm (April-October). Residents must contact Berwyn Public Works before planting trees.

In a continuing effort to improve service to our residents, the City of Berwyn provides a convenient online bill payment option for water, sewer and garbage bills. Visit Berwyn-IL.gov and click on “OnLine Bill Pay” to pay your bills.

SERVICES FOR SENIORS & PERSONS WITH DISABILITIES

The mission of the Senior Services Division is to provide quality services for Berwyn’s seniors and persons with disabilities, including low-cost transportation, lawn service, leaf blowing, snow removal, a handyman program for minor home repairs, and social programming. CERMAK ROAD PARKING: VACIN FAIRWAY PARKING PERMITS

The Vacin Fairway is the parking area behind the stores on the north side of Cermak Rd. Visitors can park for free for up to two hours. If longer parking is needed, annual permits can be purchased at the Collector’s Office in City Hall or online on the city’s website: berwyn-il.gov/forms.

CITY SPEED LIMIT & GENERAL PARKING

The speed limit is 25 mph unless posted otherwise. All alley speed limits are 15 mph unless posted otherwise. Parking is for residents only between 3AM to 6AM on all streets unless posted otherwise. Visitors will require a parking pass. Visitor passes may be purchased in a pack of 15 one-time use passes for $5 at the Police Department and City Hall, or online at berwyn-il.gov/forms. Residents and visitors should be sure to check the block in which they are parking for any additional signed parking restrictions.

COMMERCIAL TRUCK PARKING

Locations for commercial truck parking have been made available in the Vacin Fairway, Library Parking Lot and along the Depot parking areas. Annual and quarterly permits are available. Contact the Collector’s Office in City Hall or the Parking Department at the Police Department for permit pricing and parking locations.

DEPOT DISTRICT PARKING: PARKING FACILITY, MUNICIPAL LOT & PARKING PERMITS

The parking facility is located south of the Berwyn Metra train station in Berwyn’s Historic Depot District at 3320 S Grove Ave. Depot permit holders can park on the first four levels with a City of Berwyn Depot Parking Permit, which can be obtained at City Hall. Daily permits can be purchased at the pay stations located on the first floor of the two stairwells for $3. The fifth (top) level is open to the public at an hourly rate of $0.25. Daily pay parking is also available at the Municipal Lot at 32nd St and Oak Park Ave. It is open to the public at an hourly rate of $0.25. Depot parking permits for Metra commuters, employees and residents are sold as annual and quarterly permits on a first-come, first-serve basis at City Hall or online at berwyn-il.gov/forms. Parking areas are located in the Municipal Parking Facility and along Windsor Ave and Stanley Ave from Ridgeland Ave (LaVergne Station) to Harlem Ave (Harlem Station).

BICYCLE REGISTRATION

No-fee bicycle registration is taken at the Berwyn Police Department.

GARAGE SALES

A permit is required to have a house, garage or yard sale, limit two sales/year. The first permit is free and the second costs $20. Signage rules allow you to have two signs on city parkways, which may be rented for a $10 deposit/sign. Signs can be displayed between 7AM to 7PM. Sales can be held from 9AM to 5PM. Permits can be obtained at City Hall. Restrictions may apply during the COVID-19 pandemic.

VEHICLE STICKERS

City ordinance requires that any resident owning and/or operating a car, motorcycle, truck, tractor, bus or RV within the City must obtain a Berwyn vehicle sticker each year. Stickers are renewed annually on June 1 and must be displayed by July 1. New residents must purchase a Berwyn sticker at City Hall or online at berwyn-il.gov/forms within thirty (30) days of residency. Stickers are available online, by mail or in person. If you are seeking a sticker and your vehicle registration matches your current Berwyn address, you will need to show proof of license plate number and a valid driver’s license. If you have recently moved to Berwyn, you must show an updated vehicle registration with the new Berwyn address. Changes to your vehicle registration can be made at the Secretary of State or Currency Exchange. The fee for passenger cars is $50, motorcycles are $35 and RVs, trucks, tractors and buses are assessed according to class. Seniors aged 65+ years receive one free passenger vehicle sticker per household, and vehicle must be registered in the senior’s name to qualify. Retired veterans receive one free sticker with proper ID or military license plate.

VOTER REGISTRATION

Residents may register to vote at the Berwyn City Clerk’s office located at 6700 W 26th St in City Hall during normal business hours. Online registration is available at ova.elections.il.gov. Call 708-749-6451 for help.

RESIDENTIAL FLOOD MITIGATION PROGRAM

For information on the City’s Residential Flood Mitigation Program and Downspout Disconnection Assistance Program, please visit: Berwyn-IL.gov/Flood%20Information.

On April 11, 2017, the City of Berwyn passed a “welcoming city” ordinance that stops city officials and police from collaborating with the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agency with regard to persons solely because of immigration status. Visit bit.ly/WelcomingCity2017.

SIDEWALK REPLACEMENT PROGRAM

If you would like to have the public sidewalk in front of your property replaced, the City of Berwyn is offering a cost share replacement program. Please visit: Berwyn-IL.gov/sites/all/files/pdfs/community/sidewalk.pdf for more information.

SNOW REMOVAL

It is the homeowner’s responsibility to maintain all surrounding walkways to be clear of snow. Snow should not be shoveled into the street, alley, onto a fire hydrant or any other City property. For snow emergency information, call 708-749-6514. Parking on a snow route after 6 inches of accumulated snow has fallen is strictly prohibited. The parking ban will remain in effect until the snow has been completely removed from curb to curb. Snow routes are signed accordingly. Always follow all signage on a snow route. Your vehicle will be ticketed and/or towed if it is parked on a snow route. The following streets are snow routes—(East-West): Roosevelt Rd, 16th St, Cermak Rd, 26th St, Riverside Dr, 31st St, Stanley Ave, Windsor Ave, 34th St, Ogden Ave and Pershing Rd. (North-South): Harlem Ave, Home Ave, Oak Park Ave, East Ave and Ridgeland Ave. Snow removal for residential streets will follow the street maintenance schedule. It is the responsibility of you and/or any visitor of your residence to be aware of the signage posted near your home. No parking for your side of the street will be strictly enforced from 9AM to 4PM or as posted. This will allow for additional street cleaning and snow removal passes, as well as regular maintenance activities. If you are towed, contact the Police Communication Center at 708-795-5600.

Focuses on improving the overall local economic climate through the development of new jobs and commercial venues and the infill and improvement of existing properties. Offers the Finish Line Grant Program and Pay As You Go Program aimed at assisting business and property owners with the rehabilitation and renovation of buildings in our TIF districts. Available BDC Loan Programs The BDC Commercial and Micro Loan Programs are operated in conjunction with the City of Berwyn to retain and improve Berwyn businesses and to encourage new business investments. The loans may be used for almost any business-related expense, including build-outs, façade improvements, equipment, inventory and working capital.

The Commercial Loan Program offers: • Traditional loans of $10,001 or greater. • Annually-established interest rates. • A maximum term of 5 years.

The Micro Loan Program offers:

• Micro loans between $1,000 to $10,000. • Annually-established interest rates. • A maximum term of 3 years.

The BDC Recognized as a Certified Lender through the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity’s Advantage Illinois Program In early 2021, the BDC received notice that we had been recognized as an approved lender through the Advantage Illinois Program. This State of Illinois program allows the BDC to submit eligible loans to the Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity for further approval. Eligible loans would receive additional financing from the State which can act to reduce the BDC’s lending risk profile, reduce the borrower’s interest rate, and reduce the borrower’s equity requirement. The State of Illinois would take a second position on the loans, ensuring subordination to the BDC. These additional funds are not right for everyone, as they do come with specific job creation criteria. However, this recognition provides additional lending power to the BDC’s already diverse programs and services.

Apply and/or remain BDC members in good standing. Operate or plan to operate a licensed and for-profit business in Berwyn. Comply with all city ordinances and ADA regulations. Be able to secure their loans.

EDA Revolving Loan Fund Summer Launch Stay tuned for more details regarding the BDC’s Summer launch of the EDA Revolving Loan Fund, made possible by a $2 million grant from the United States Economic Development Administration, and matched with a $500,000 commitment from the City of Berwyn. These funds will reinforce the programs and services that provide a much-needed infusion of capital as our small businesses transition out of this pandemic.

DEVELOPING BERWYN Southeast Corner of Oak Park Ave and Cermak Rd, Movin’ Right Along! The redevelopment of the southeast corner of Oak Park Avenue and Cermak Road continued its progress. Nearly complete, this prominent and highly visible corner will offer additional medical office space and parking.

Economic Development Business Outreach The most important tools in our economic development kit over the last year were the many federal, state, and local resources put in place as a result of the pandemic. The BDC’s efforts allowed Berwyn businesses to access resources at an outsized rate, be it through the Paycheck Protection Program, the Small Business Administration’s Economic Injury Disaster Loans, the State of Illinois Business Interruption Grant Program, or Cook County’s Covid-19 Business Recovery Initiative. Combined, these programs infused more than $7 million into our business community. This total does not include the Restaurant Revitalization Fund and the second round of the Paycheck Protection Program, which recently closed. We also know that more dollars are on their way in the form of the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant. As additional resources become available, we will continue our daily outreach to ensure every single eligible business is aware of and applies for funds.

Finish Line Grant Program Outside of the pandemic recovery dollars, the BDC continued operation of the Finish Line Grant program. This grant program not only sought to assist businesses and property owners with rehabilitation and renovation of physical properties, but was also expanded to include marketing costs. Eligible businesses and property owners must be located in one of our TIF Districts. While the program was developed to increase viability of redevelopment projects, we also know that the program was critical in driving private commercial investment. In 2020, the BDC committed more than $200,000 in grant funds, leveraging more than $1 million in private commercial investment. This grant fund commitment is more than twice as much as 2019 but leveraged more than five times as much investment. In 2021 the BDC has budgeted $650,000 for this grant program, earmarked for the Roosevelt, Harlem, and Depot TIF districts. BDC BUSINESS RESOURCES: CHAMBER SERVICES THE CHAMBER SERVICES DIVISION... The Berwyn Chamber division consists of over 300 members from a wide variety of business industries. This arm of the BDC is funded in part by membership dues and as a result develops unique educational programs, networking opportunities and partnerships to meet the diverse needs of our members and business community at large. Local Public Art Berwyn is home to many public indoor and outdoor art projects funded by several art initiatives and grants. It all began with “The Picnic,” a mural painted in 1942 inside the Berwyn Post Office as part of FDR’s New Deal Public Works program. In the nearly 60 years since, Berwyn has continued to incorporate art across the city. The Depot District is home to a series of public murals made possible by the Berwyn Public Art Initiative, both on buildings and freestanding from Harlem Ave to Ridgeland Ave. Some of Berwyn’s public school buildings and Youth Crossroads, Inc. also offer murals for the community to enjoy. Tour the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District in Oak Park (4 miles) Just north is the Frank Lloyd Wright Historic District in Oak Park. The area, roughly defined by Harlem Ave, Ridgeland Ave, Lake St and Thomas St, is dotted with historic homes built, renovated or lived in by the famous Prairie-style architect, who called Oak Park his home from 1889 to 1909. The suburb holds the country’s largest concentration of architecture in the Prairie School design, including 25 designs by Wright himself. D100 2020-21 Report Card District 100 staff facilitated school improvement work focused on implementing a rigorous curriculum, enhancing instructional practices, and providing ongoing support for the social emotional development of all students. The district’s preschool programs received the Award of Excellence and are rated GOLD by ExceleRate Illinois. District 100’s preschool director and teachers shared their newly-developed virtual programs with districts across the state at the StarNet Region II workshop. Staff members have presented at a variety of conferences— including the National and Illinois Council of Teachers of Mathematics, Illinois Digital Educators Alliance, Illinois Council of Instructional Coaching, and Illinois Reading Conference. Several District 100 schools are participating in the Lurie’s Children Hospital Trauma Responsive Schools pilot. School teams receive training on strategies to support students and are focusing on work around trauma, anti-racism, and equity. The district’s Ambassadors of Knowledge conference hosted for kids, by kids was held virtually. The conference featured a keynote presentation on cybersecurity, followed by students sharing their knowledge, skills, and expertise on topics such as coding, robotics, and app usage and design. Two summer school sessions are being offered to provide academic and social-emotional support to students in a variety of programs. In-person and virtual options are available, and include programs for early childhood, general education, extended school year, dual language/bilingual, and enrichment. District 100 got creative to ensure students continued to be recognized through PBIS and health/wellness programs— including virtual assemblies and fitness challenges, surprise home visits, and live streaming school events—despite the pandemic. 56

D98 2020-21 Report Card District 98 saw major upgrades this year! Improvements include a new and updated digital sign at the district office, brand new air conditioning to all classrooms and all school lunchrooms, and Havlicek Elementary will have a new auditorium in the Fall of 2021. A class of 5th graders at Havlicek Elementary School won the “Read to Succeed Contest” twice this year! The contest was sponsored by Achieve 3000. District 98 hosted a Moderna COVID-19 vaccination clinic at Lincoln Middle School to provide vaccines to the Berwyn community in partnership with Berwyn South School District 100 and Positive Health Services.

Coming Soon! Havlicek and Jefferson Elementary will be opening new STEAM centers in the Fall of 2021 to serve students in grades K-5. There will be an increase in after-school activities at all schools—including in academics and the arts. School buildings will continue to see upgrades.

Sports and fine arts were added to Summer 2021 programming. The district hosted its first Children’s Day Parade! The event was so successful, it will be an ongoing tradition. During Illinois Arts Education Week, a 4th grader at Jefferson Elementary School won 1st place in the Illinois State Board of Education art contest. The district provided food to the Berwyn North community in partnership with several organizations, including State Representative Lisa Hernandez and Zakat Foundation of America.

The school was once again recognized as “Commendable” by the federal Every Student Succeeds Act. In 2020, 89% of Freshman were on-track for graduation—a 10% increase since 2016. This year 1,313 student athletes participated in 28 sports— and the numbers are still going. Engineering Club took 1st place at the state competition. Morton West High School saw a number of new clubs this year—such as Allies, Morton Speaks, MTV, and TedX, where students watch and discuss TED talks and share student voices. The 2020 graduation rate rose by 3% from the previous year.

The board fulfills this mission by making grants, funded by local tax dollars, to local agencies that provide these services to Berwyn residents.

BACKGROUND On October 31, 1963, President John F. Kennedy signed into law the Community Mental Health Act, which drastically altered the delivery of mental health services and inspired a new era of optimism in mental healthcare. This law led to the establishment of comprehensive community mental health centers throughout the country. It helped people with mental health conditions, who were until then effectively “warehoused” in hospitals and institutions, move back into their communities. In Illinois, the Community Mental Health Act led to the creation of “708” boards, which are community mental health boards established by a community, municipality, or township for the purposes of planning and funding mental health, developmental disability, and substance abuse services. Through the hard work of area residents and social service agencies, the Berwyn Township 708 Community Mental Health Fund was established in 1974 by referendum.

BERWYN TOWNSHIP 708 COMMUNITY MENTAL HEALTH BOARD TODAY Initially, the Berwyn 708 Board funded four agencies. Some 47 years later, the 708 Board is a well-established grantmaking body that supports organizations that reach Berwyn residents with vital mental health, developmental disability, and substance use disorder programming. In 2021, the 708 Board has committed to funding 14 agencies and their provision of 26 communitybased programs. Over the past 10 years alone, the Berwyn 708 Board has granted $4,303,956 in funds to provided direct service to Berwyn residents.

How to Apply: Nonprofit organizations that provide direct services to improve the mental health of Berwyn Township residents with mental health conditions, developmental disabilities, and/or substance use disorders may apply to the Berwyn Township 708 Community Mental Health Board. orton College, the second oldest community college in Illinois, was founded in 1924 to meet the educational demands in the growing communities of Berwyn, Cicero, Forest View, Lyons, McCook, Stickney, and other near-western suburbs. Students have multiple ways to get involved and meet their fellow classmates. Outside of campus-facilitated events, such as New Student Orientation, Welcome Week, student success workshops, and regional and national conferences, there are 20 clubs and organizations ranging in interests. Participating students have the opportunity to join these organizations and meet new people, as well as build their resume and add to their leadership or team experiences. In its nearly 100 years, Morton College has grown to offer 38 Career Certificates, 17 Associate in Applied Science Degrees and 4 Transfer Program Degrees. Since 2019, Morton College has added four certificate programs in welding and expanded enrollment to meet the needs in high-demand health care fields. Nearly 33% of our students are enrolled in a transfer program. This two-year curriculum was specifically designed for students transferring to a four-year college in pursuit of a bachelor’s degree. Outside of the transfer program, we accommodate students at the level of education they want to pursue. Thirty percent of our students are enrolled in the Associate of Applied Science program with the intent of joining the workforce upon graduation.

Additionally, nearly 18 percent of our students are taking adult education or ESL courses. We also offer online courses for students to access their education when it fits in their schedule. With an enrollment of nearly 6,700 students, the atmosphere on campus mirrors those of a traditional university setting. We are bettering ourselves so our students can continue to do the same. erwyn is known as the City of Homes because it is so far from your average cookie-cutter suburb. When you think Berwyn, bungalows most likely come to mind first. Yes, Berwyn’s rich history is reflected in one of the most significant collections of Chicago-style bungalows in the nation today. But it may surprise you to learn just how much variety there is in Berwyn’s charming and affordable housing stock.

American Foursquares

Some of the first homes to be built in Berwyn, American Foursquares are unique in their effective use of space. Popular around the 1910s, they were chosen because of their simplicity compared to their fancier Victorian counterparts. Common features of an American Foursquare are two and a half stories, large overhanging eaves, and a large front porch with wide steps. They tended to be built on larger lots, providing residents with plenty of space to plan and plant beautifully landscaped front lawns.

Victorians

You can’t miss one of Berwyn’s Queen Anne Victorians. Featuring signature style details like beautiful wrap-around porches, turrets, towers, and ornamental details, Queen Annes give a nod to the extravagance of a by-gone era. Despite their ornateness, many of the materials required to build a Victorian home were being mass-produced at the time. They were able to be shipped easily, all thanks to the widespread train routes that were established that included stops in Berwyn.

Workman’s Cottages

The Workman’s Cottage home can be defined by its namesake—a cottage. Most Workman’s Cottages are typically one and a half stories with a pointed roof. Some are frame houses and others were built with brick. Workman’s Cottages are considered the predecessor to Chicagostyle Bungalows. The outsides of the cottage-style homes may appear very different, but the interiors can be very similar with almost the same floor plan.

French Normandy

After World War I, the French Normandy architecture style became popular among the growing middle class in America. Inspired by French chateaus, these houses were versions built on a smaller and more affordable scale. French Normandy houses often feature arched doorways, steep roof pitches, high ridge lines, dormers, half-timbering, and a round stone tower topped by a conical roof usually serving as either the entrance or simply a design feature.

Tudor Revivals

Tudor Revival style houses are some of the more recent houses to be built in Berwyn, starting to appear in the 1940s. Tudor Revivals tend to sit on smaller lots than their Bungalow neighbors as they were built to be a more affordable option. These houses boast a very steep pitched roof and intersecting gable roofs and are always one and a half stories high. Some feature small front porches, but many have no porch at all. Berwyn’s Tudors tend to feature intricate stonework that frames different parts of the home.

National Register of Historic Places In 2015, the Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District made it onto the National Register’s list of Historic Places for the seventh time. In addition, two unique Berwyn homes are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

THE SILHAN HOUSE In 2007, this home made it onto the National Register of Historic Places for its well-preserved style and its many features from the Art Moderne style that make it notable on a local and national level.

Bungalows

Berwyn’s Bungalows were all generally built around the same time in the 1920s to 1930s. Although many Bungalows in a block were sometimes built by the same workers, each house in Berwyn is unique, with subtle differences from its neighbors by design or made by the owners over the years. The roofline, style of shingles, limestone accents, and even the style of decorative face brick combine in endless ways from house to house. The Bungalows in Berwyn are also full of ornamental details such as tiled roofs, stained glass windows, checkerboard brick patterns, and intricate limestone insets. The Central Berwyn Bungalow Historic District is roughly bounded by Cermak Road, Home Avenue, Ridgeland & Cuyler Avenues, and 26th Street.

ARTHUR J. DUNHAM HOUSE In 1982, this home was added to the National Register of Historic Places because of its clear representation of the Prairie style.
