A word from our President.
With 2018 behind us, we are thrilled to see what new and exciting things 2019 will bring. The successes of last year have positioned us for continued growth and success for years to come. A few highlights from 2018 include the hiring of our new Executive Director Dave Hulseberg, under whose leadership the BDC was able to adopt a new 4-year contract with the City of Berwyn with well-defined deliverables. A full list of our Top 10 Focus Points for the year are available for review on our website along with our 4-year contract with the City of Berwyn, extensive TIF information, presentations to City Council, our financials, Annual Meeting presentation, available properties map and much more. We encourage you to take a look and provide your thoughts. As we charge forward into 2019, we are excited to increase our business community outreach with the addition of a few new programs. On a monthly basis, the BDC will host Business Corridor Meetings which will give business owners from that specific corridor the opportunity to learn about upcoming programs available, receive economic development updates, and have open dialogue with fellow business members. We will also launch our monthly Nonprofit Roundtable Meetings open to schools, community organizations and nonprofits that serve the Berwyn community. These roundtable meetings are intended to bring organizations together to collaborate and work to better serve the Berwyn community at large. Additionally, we are excited to announce the launch of our Finish Line Grant Program and Pay As You Go TIF Incentive Program intended to support the growth of our small business community. In closing, the BDC prides itself on the partnerships that we have built and continue to build with our stakeholders. Our work could not be made possible without the support of the City of Berwyn and our current administration. I look forward to continuing to highlight the development that the Berwyn Development Corporation is charged with throughout 2019 in our #HandcraftedCommunity.

Every year, the Berwyn business community comes together to recognize an outstanding Business Person of the Year and Business of the Year. This year’s recipient of the 34th Charles E. Piper Award for Business Person of the Year, Ann Mackin and the George W. Ashby Award for Business Excellence, The James Joyce Irish Pub, were honored at the BDC’s Annual Meeting held on Tuesday, January 15, 2019.

The George W. Ashby Award for Business Excellence is given annually to one Berwynbased business that presents a professional and favorable image to Berwyn, provides quality goods or services, maintains a visually appealing space, and practices high-quality customer service to its patrons. The James Joyce Irish Pub truly embodies this award. From the handcarved bar to the personally selected stained glass, owners Brendan White and Colin Downes wanted to ensure that their space was an inviting community gathering place. Over the past 17 years, The James Joyce has stayed true to the vision that Brendan and Colin had from the start. Aside from their bustling business, they have made sure to give back to the community by hosting numerous events that benefit the community.
The Charles E. Piper Award celebrates Berwyn's "Business Person of the Year" and their exceptional contribution of time, talent and treasures to the betterment of Berwyn. This year’s recipient Ann Mackin demonstrated that she truly is a trailblazer of the community and helped put Berwyn on the map. Over 30 years ago, Ann led the efforts to establish the North Berwyn Park District to provide services to the community north of Cermak Road. From knocking on doors to sitting before a hearing, her commitment to make the North Berwyn Park District was unwavering. Since then, Ann has served as a North Berwyn Park District Commissioner for over 30 years. Three significant programs that were developed under Ann’s tenure include 16th Street Theater, the Corrida del Mariachi 5K Run/Walk and Best of Berwyn.

How the owners of Lavergne’s Tavern are bringing local fare to surrounding suburbs
w hen brothers Jorge and Jerry Hernandez opened Lavergne’s Tavern in 2016, the goal was to create a place that Berwyn residents and families could consider their “hometown spot”. Bringing great food and drinks to the Berwyn area was somewhat of a homecoming for owner Jerry—as he grew up in the area, attending Hiawatha and Morton West High School, he was proud to be able to bring the concept to the community. By renovating the old Garv’s Inn location with an industrial, urban design, and adding in 20 draft beer lines, an elevated pub fare menu, craft cocktails, and a spacious patio seating area, the Hernandez brothers have certainly seen their vision come to life over the past two and a half years since the establishment opened. Lavergne’s Tavern has already enjoyed success and recognition both in Berwyn—winning “Berwyn’s Best” titles (Best Cocktail, 2016; Best Egg Dish, 2017; Best Seafood Dish, 2018)—and within the Chicagoland area, as the restaurant’s Diablo Burger was recently featured on WGN TV’s Chicago’s Best TV. And now Jerry and Jorge are expanding their passion for delicious food and local beer to nearby Oakbrook Terrace with the opening of their fourth restaurant concept, Brook’s Kitchen & Tap. Wellness Fair Here’s to a very healthy 2019! Join the Berwyn Park District for their Wellness Fair on Thursday, March 7 at Heritage Middle School from 5pm-7pm. This event will be chock-full with information for children and family members and a variety of resources on health, wellness and safety topics, as well as exhibitor booths, free screenings and demonstrations throughout the evening. Battle of the Bands Calling all Berwyn teen basement bands, buddies and fans! Berwyn Park District is looking for their next star to represent their community in Berwyn’s Battle of the Bands competition on Friday, March 15 from 6pm-9pm at the Liberty Cultural Center. Bands will be provided a stage, electricity, a microphone, a speaker, judges and an audience. All types of music and abilities are welcome to participate.
