A word from our President.

With 2019 behind us, we are thrilled to see what new and exciting things 2020 will bring. It’s hard to believe we just completed an entire decade of progressive economic development work here at the Berwyn Development Corporation. The successes and initiatives brought forth in 2019 will ensure the BDC continues to provide quality services to the Berwyn community well into the next decade. A few highlights from 2019 include the 12-year extensions of the Roosevelt and Depot TIF districts, the launch of our Finish Line Grant and Pay as You Go programs, and the continued updates to the available properties and vacancy tracking maps on our website. While we celebrate the wins of 2019, we are even more excited about the opportunities that 2020 will bring. The extension of our Roosevelt and Depot TIFs led the BDC staff to think of new and innovative ways to bring additional economic development resources to more of our business community. Because of this exercise, the BDC is pleased to announce the creation of the Ridgeland TIF, and the extension of the Harlem TIF boundary along the entirety of Cermak Road. This will allow an overwhelming majority of our businesses and commercial property owners to take advantage of our economic development tools. The BDC is pleased with the collaborations and partnerships that took place in 2019, both with businesses and taxing bodies. Much of the feedback received from our community will be added to the Community Strategic Plan, which will be adopted in 2020. This plan will further assist our organization in our efforts to serve the Berwyn community in 2020 and beyond. We are incredibly proud of the goals we’ve accomplished in the past year. This work would not have been possible without our partnerships and stakeholders, most notably the City of Berwyn and our current administration. I look forward to meeting our continued economic development goals together and continue building and celebrating a Berwyn truly Full of Character(s).

Every January, Old Fashioned Candies hosts a Candlelight Bowl with 100% of the proceeds going to a deserving recipient. Over $100,000 in proceeds has been donated over the course of the event’s 27 years. In 2019, Old Fashioned Candies celebrated 50 years in Berwyn.

ENTERTAINMENT 16th STREET THEATER

Palestine, written and performed by Najla Saïd and directed by Sturgis Warner is hitting the 16th Street Theater stage April 9 through May 2. About: In Palestine, Najla Saïd provides a unique and personal passage into one of the most volatile and historic corners of the earth with compassion, humor and honesty. Raised in privilege on New York City’s Upper West Side (where many of her best friends were Jewish), Najla recounts a family trip to the Middle East to visit her father’s homeland when she was a teenager. Anorexic and depressed, obsessed with boys and the beach, Najla takes audiences on a whirlwind tour from kissing Jewish boys to encounters with world figures including Yasser Arafat. Najla’s father, Edward Saïd, was a professor at Columbia University and, until his death in 2003, a worldwide spokesman for Palestine and the Middle East.

Support for this project was provided by Representative La Shawn Ford, Mayor Robert Lovero, and Berwyn City Council. In addition to the renovation, the library also launched a free one-on-one tutoring program for adults learning English and/or studying for the citizenship test. The tutoring program is run by TEACH, a non-profit organization, and partners with the library’s Department of Justice Recognized Immigration Services Program to provide comprehensive citizenship services. Individuals interested in either becoming a tutor or receiving tutoring assistance should call Susana Aguilar at 630/217-0396. The library is also now offering free online classes on over 70 languages through Mango Languages. Classes include English, Spanish and French, but also less common languages like Gaelic, Cherokee, Czech, and Finnish. Learning another language offers proven benefits, including lowering your risk for dementia and Alzheimer's. Sign up for an account at berwynlibrary.org/adults/online!

THE 2020 INCLUSION PROJECT On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, January 20, 2020 local students came together to commemorate Dr. King's legacy and volunteer to create a mural celebrating racial and cultural inclusion in Berwyn, IL. The event started with a viewing of a speech by Dr. King and a pizza party. Then, students were led through a mural design and production process by the two lead artists on the project, Antonia Ruppert of Antonia Ruppert Fine Art and Rob Moriarty, Morton West High School Fine Arts teacher. WGN News was there to film the event and interview the project leaders. This event was part of a larger project, the 2020 Inclusion Project. Leading up to January 20, the students participated in workshops that covered the work of Dr. King, drawing and sketching techniques, and how public art can be used as a tool for community development. More workshops are planned for the artists and students to finish the mural design and production. The mural will be installed on the Youth Crossroads building at a later date. This project began as an idea by AmeriCorps Member Ryan Arnold to work on a community mural to commemorate MLK Day as a day of national service. It has grown into a partnership between the Berwyn Development Corporation, Berwyn Public Art Initiative, Youth Crossroads, Inc., and J. Sterling Morton High School District 201 that will continue to engage students in the creation of community murals in Berwyn. A special thank you to BMO Harris Bank and individual donors that have generously donated to the 2020 Inclusion Project.

35o f years paisans pizzeria & Bar •••••••••••••••••••••

It’s hard to believe that this year, Paisans Pizzeria & Bar will be turning 35 years old. From its humble beginnings at the Cicero location to present day with 5, soon to be 7, locations throughout the Chicagoland area, their mission has remained the same: Sharing a good meal among friends is what Paisans Pizzeria is all about. “As a family-owned and operated business, we want people to feel that Paisans is their home away from home. This is a place where they can come together with family and friends and celebrate or watch the game over a good meal”, said Pete. With over 250 employees, Paisans prides itself in the dynamic team they have built over many years. The new locations in the Printers Row and West Lawn neighborhood of Chicago will welcome an additional 150 team members. The design and concept of each new location will be modeled after the iconic Paisans Pizzeria and Bar rustic industrial gastropub. Pete continues to be the design mastermind behind the look of all the locations. From picking fixtures to doing the actual welding, Pete enjoys putting his own touch on each of his locations. For many years, Paisans was always the delivery and “single slice” place until they opened the Berwyn location. “This 20,000 sq ft location on the Historic Route 66 stretch of Ogden Ave in Berwyn was really the next big step for us. We are so proud of what we created here in this community”, said Pete when reminiscing about the company's humble beginnings.

Paisans Pizzeria & Bar 6226 W Ogden Ave, Berwyn

Not only has Paisans committed to sponsoring the 30th Berwyn Route 66 Car Show once again, but they are dedicated to supporting more local initiatives. “This year being our 35th year in business, we have designated it our Year of Giving. Each month, Paisans will work closely with a non-profit organization to help raise funds and awareness”, said Jimmy. With a few recipients already lined up such as Miracles In Progress, MDA, Ronald McDonald House Charities and the Boys Club of Cicero, Paisans is excited to continue working with the community. The future for Paisans continues to look bright as the next generation steps in and adds their creative touch to the current Paisans way. “We are not afraid to venture into new locations or concepts as it shows from our upcoming grand openings in the City this Spring,” says Dominick while discussing where the company is headed next. "Whether you’re getting your kicks on Route 66 or venturing into the City, we want to make sure that a Paisans Pizzeria and Bar is always an option near you. With us, you can expect a good meal and friendly faces waiting to welcome you at any of our 7 locations, so be sure to stop in for a visit."
