in his own words
Hello and Happy New Year!
MAL MONTOYA
B
efore I share with you my hopes and vision for continued success for Berwyn in 2015, let me take a quick moment to review some of the Berwyn Development Corporation’s many economic development highlights from 2014. By any measure, last year was a successful year for Berwyn. The City and BDC hosted 19 ribbon cuttings, including the opening of Frank Thomas’s long awaited Big Hurt Brewhouse. Our partnerships also provided TIF assistance to 10 businesses and continued to successfully manage its $5M commercial loan portfolio. In total, Berwyn improved 71,827 square feet of commercial space including the groundbreaking for the new Ross Dress For Less in Cermak Plaza. Approximately $1.8 million in public investment was used to leverage more than $4.6 million in private investment. Across all four TIF corridors over 289 permits were pulled in 2014 totaling over $16 million in total investment. It must be noted that this is a record investment never before achieved! As we roll into the New Year, it looks like we’ll continue our unprecedented levels of activities. I truly believe that the success achieved by our Chamber Services and Economic Development Commissions in 2015 has the potential to be greater than what was achieved last year. Of note we’re looking forward to unveiling the City’s new Integrated Marketing Campaign, the final piece of the
President BDC Board of Directors
development project at Cermak Rd & Oak Park Ave, and the second phase of the highly successful Berwyn Gateway Plaza at Harlem and Cermak. I’d like to acknowledge those that have accepted the call to get involved and joined the BDC Board. Please join me in congratulating Jennifer Mitchell, Brendan O’Connor and Gilbert Peña as our newly elected board members. In conclusion, I would like to reiterate that none of these great projects are done by the force of one individual. We affect change through a partnership among the great City of Berwyn, our local business community, Berwyn residents, BDC staff and our dedicated Board of Directors. This is a very exciting time to get involved. If you have the desire to roll up your sleeves to make Berwyn a better place, we’d love to have you join us. Please feel free to contact the BDC directly or reach out to any of our fine members. Thank you and have a great year!

BDC aims to make impact through charitable giving Good for community | Good for business
T
he Board of Directors of the Berwyn Development Corporation recently established a Philanthropic Committee to coordinate charitable contributions to causes within the community. A pilot program was created in 2014 with full program roll-out to begin this year. The BDC committee will make awards to local not-for-profit For the Love of Lee check presentation. public charities, giving priority to those efforts that positively impact economic vitality, provide services directly to beneficiaries, address root problems and serve disenfranchised groups. The program’s first beneficiary was St. Leonard Catholic Church for their assistance with the For the Love of Lee project. Established by the adoptive parents of Lee, a 9-year old St. Leonard’s parishioner with Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy, the project will fund the build-out of safe and accessible living quarters.

World’s Largest Laundromat Honored for Business Excellence World’s Largest Laundromat was recognized with the George W. Ashby Award for Business Excellence at the Berwyn Development Corporation’s Annual Meeting on January 13, 2015. This father-sons business has been featured in newspapers and newscasts on every continent except Antarctica, and the operation has even become a tourist destination. The 36-panel solar thermal system – one of the largest installations in Illinois – sustains the hot water for its washers. The emissions it saves is the equivalent to planting 56 acres of trees each year. Other green features include: “express” washers that cut dry time in half, retrofitted efficiency lighting, and recycle bins for everything from laundry detergent bottles to old clothes. The Sundance Channel featured them on their “EcoBiz” segment. Pictured: Tom Benson and his son Mark. Established in 1983, World’s Largest Laundromat is the flagship store of the laundry industry, known worldwide for its stateof-the-art technology. With more than 300 machines spread over 13,500 sf, the laundromat does indeed fit the profile as the “world’s largest.”
Beyond the green initiatives, the store offers a host of amenities including free Wi-Fi, 16 flat screen TVs (including a 91” TV), live entertainment, free pizza on Wednesday nights, free donuts every morning, play area for the kids and a bird sanctuary. Open 24 hours per day, 365 days per year, the staff provides excellent customer service, and the business is known for its generous support for community organizations.
