The

in his own words

Bienvenidos, Ben Arrivata, Vitejte, Witaj!

A

s another progressive year is upon us, Berwyn is positioned to continue its path for being a destination city of cultural diversity, economic growth, social awareness and civic pride. As a public-private partnership with the City of Berwyn, it is the mission of the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) to enhance the strengths for each of these foundational pillars that define our nationally recognized community. Organizationally speaking, 2016 will be a stellar year as the Why Berwyn? Integrated Marketing Campaign will be in full effect. Expect each of Berwyn’s four distinctive corridors to showcase their individual personalities while adding to the vibrancy of Berwyn as a whole. Six newly developed Membership Tiers will offer business owners the opportunity to select a marketing initiative that best aligns with their business expectations and projections. Networking and educational seminars will serve as vehicles whereby business owners can openly collaborate with one another. And finally, special events within each corridor such as Oktoberfest, Route 66 Car Show, Zombie Walk & Pub Crawl and the Taste Of Cermak Road will provide venues for Berwyn residents to embrace the social aspects of our City. From a development perspective, significant growth and expansion is underway at the second phase of the highly successful Berwyn Gateway Plaza at Harlem Ave & Cermak Ave which will include new restaurants such as Noodles & Company and Blaze Fast Fired Pizza. The completion of this development will bring 18,000 square feet of new retail to our local economy and is projected to create over

JOUSEF MONDRAGON President BDC Board of Directors $171,000 in local property taxes and over $95,000 in local sales tax along with varied employment opportunities for our residents. Immediately across the street, Ross Dress For Less will open as the final piece of the multi-year redevelopment effort at Cermak Plaza. Adding to the redevelopment initiatives, Home Run Inn Pizza will round out the last phase of the Superblock Redevelopment Project on the corner of Cermak Rd & Oak Park Ave. And lastly, The Depot District will be the backdrop for two new eateries, The Garage Smokehouse and Lavergne’s Tavern, formerly Garv Inn. Through the commitment and fortitude of our partnership with the City, Berwyn businesses and residents will continue to experience the benefits borne from ventures and territories unknown. Notwithstanding, the dedication shown by The BDC Board & Staff will

continue to explore and execute innovative measures destined to showcase Berwyn as the pinnacle of progress and tradition. By no means do we rest on our laurels for which I ask of each of you to give of your time, talent or treasures. It is through your involvement that our city, the City of Berwyn, will reach new heights that garner individual gains and achieve collective successes.

The Café Nutella is a cafe latte with a healthy scoop of Nutella hazelnut spread steamed into the milk. The drink is built around fresh roasted La Capannina espresso shots for a masterful blend of Arabica and Robusto coffees that encompass the essence of Italy.

The Café Con Leche (coffee with milk) is known throughout Latin America. It starts with a Café Bustello dark roast espresso shot, mixed with steamed milk for a smooth and velvety texture and sweetened to preference.

The Classic Latte has two shots of Bridgeport Coffee signature Hardscrabble blend, which is a full-bodied Vienna roast with dark chocolate and a hint of spice. The drink is mixed with steamed milk and poured slowly to create a creamy texture.

HAPPY BUDDHA CAFE

MISSION HOUSE CAFE

The Café de Olla is a sweet and savory Mexican coffee that is an earthy mixture of freshly roasted Montes de Oro coffee, cinnamon, aniseed and piloncillo, an unrefined brown sugar.

The Café Latte is a hand crafted latte made from the I Have A Bean espresso blend and steamed milk. No sweeteners are needed as the fruity notes of the Northern Italian style espresso blends with the natural sweetness of steamed milk.

CAFÉ NUTELLA! Avito Caffe walked home the winner with its Café Nutella! Vito Brancato reacted to the award, “After 14 years of serving up Italian “caffe” at 6510 Ogden, it’s an honor to be voted Berwyn’s best coffee shop. I share this honor with the cast of loyal characters (oops, I mean customers) that inspire my filmmaking. PAGE And as always, DRINK COFFEE, YOU CAN SLEEP WHEN YOU’RE DEAD.”

Partners in our community EDUCATION bn98.org BERWYN NORTH SCHOOL DIST. 98 This year represents the second year of work towards our Five Year Long Range Plan. We are well under way to accomplishing some major goals. The achievement gap between the district and the state is closing and our students are meeting the expectations that have been set before them. Our Dual Language Committee has been working for over a year researching various models. There are many models and many hybrids of those models. We have selected what we feel will be the best model that will meet the needs of the Dist. 98 community. Our Language Academy program will be implemented at the pre-school and kindergarten levels for the 2016-2017 school year. For more information please join us Feb 25 at our next Community Conversations at Lincoln Middle School 6432 W 16th Street from 4-5pm in English and from 5-6pm in Español. bsd100.org BERWYN SCHOOL DIST. 100 School District 100 is excited to be hosting Students Involved in Technology (SIT) on Feb 20. This is the premier student led technology conference in the State of Illinois and we are proud to be one of the seven districts in the state chosen to participate. Adults can only volunteer in this all student led conference, giving role reversal a new meaning. Former Superintendent Stan Fields, School Board President Bob Pauly and Interim Superintendent Mary Havis continue to fight for fair funding for all schools in Illinois. They provided testimony to the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) Budget committee on Nov 20 urging them to revamp the funding formula used throughout the State of Illinois. Funding in communities such as ours is $11,000 less per child than more affluent communities. The formula is unfair for all Berwyn and Cicero children. Contact your representatives for a fair formula. http://fundingilfuture.org/ morton201.org MORTON WEST HIGH SCHOOL School Dist. 201 is one of 425 school districts in the U.S. and Canada honored by the College Board, the Advanced Placement governing body, with placement on the 6th Annual AP® District Honor Roll for increasing access to AP course work while simultaneously maintaining or increasing the percentage of students scoring high enough on the AP Exam to earn college credit. Reaching these goals indicates that we are successfully identifying motivated and academically prepared students who are ready for college. To be included on the Honor Roll, Morton had to increase the number of students participating in AP while also increasing or maintaining the number of students scoring

high enough on the AP Exam to earn college credit. We’re very proud of the results. In the last few years we have increased the number of students attending some of the most prestigious universities in the country including Harvard, Oberlin and Northwestern. Although still early in the year, a number of Morton West students have already accepted full ride offers to some of the best universities in the country including the University of Chicago and the engineering program at Trinity College in Hartford Connecticut. #MortonPride morton.edu MORTON COLLEGE The Morton College community is excited to expand possibilities in our highly anticipated 15,778 sq. ft., two-story addition opening in Fall 2016. The new building’s plans include cutting edge technology in 10 high tech classrooms for our Adult Education, Career and Technical programs and general education courses, as well as a student lounge and Teaching and Learning Center. Students will thrive in new creative and dynamic learning spaces. Morton College strives to be environmentally friendly through LEED certification for the addition.
