Welcome to the latest edition of the Berwyn Magazine! In here, you will find available resources, meet local business owners, and read about exciting new projects.

For example, programming for entrepreneurs rapidly expanded in 2023. Specifically, the BDC re-opened the Berwyn Shops with 12 new small businesses. We also helped start two shared retail spaces located in the Cermak Plaza, Berwyn Boutique and Berwyn Sprout. We encourage you to visit all three locations this holiday season! We encourage you to learn more about them on page 12.

Beyond these homegrown projects, I am pleased to share that the BDC continued to connect businesses to funding, educational training, and networking opportunities. We also hosted dynamic events, such as Oktoberfest and the Route 66 Car Show - none of which would have been possible without the support of the Berwyn community!

As my tenure as BDC Board President comes to an end, I want to personally thank the BDC board, Berwyn businesses, and residents for your kindness these past two years. I am proud to have worked alongside you and I cannot wait to see where Berwyn goes next.

As a final note, I’d like to recognize the passing of a beloved board member, Nora Laureto. There are not enough words to truly honor the years of service she committed to the Berwyn community, from being an alderwoman to serving on countless committees and boards.

However, her contagious laugh and enthusiam to make Berwyn a better place will be remembered for years to come. Our hearts go out to the Laureto family during these difficult times. Nora was truly the Mother of Berwyn and we will continue to keep her legacy alive here at the Berwyn Development Corporation.

A MESSAGE FROM MAYOR ROBERT J. LOVERO, CITY OF BERWYN Greetings neighbors and visitors, As we usher in the fall and winter seasons, I am proud to say that the City of Berwyn is unquestionably a community that cares. Our people look out for one another, something that is especially true when the holidays approach. That is why, along with a group of community-minded individuals, I established the Berwyn Holiday Fund, now in its 15th year, having served 5,594 dinners to the residents of Berwyn over the previous fourteen years.

This community-led event is generously supported by local businesses and residents, with the goal of providing a warm traditional Thanksgiving meal on Thanksgiving Day for our most vulnerable residents. During the Christmas holiday, we work with local grocers and community members to deliver a Holiday Food Basket to disadvantaged families.

The volunteers, local youth leaders, and the city employees, the Berwyn Police Department, Berwyn Fire Department, and park districts who gather to help with these acts of charity are what continues to propel these efforts, and we look forward to these holiday events on Thanksgiving Day and on December 16, 2023 for the Holiday Food Box. Information on how you can get involved or contribute is available on the city’s website, City News section, at berwyn-il.gov, or by contacting my office during normal business hours at (708) 788-2660.

The public health and safety of our residents and those who visit and shop in our city is a top priority for our administration. The U.S Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is requiring local governments to survey residents regarding their water service lines.

In order to accomplish this, the City of Berwyn has developed a survey that will allow the city to make improvements to the city water system by collecting valuable data from the responses. We are asking residents to help with this survey by performing a quick and easy inspection of their water pipes. Visit our City’s Official YouTube Channel (@CityOfBerwyn) to view our instructional video, complete the survey, and enter to win a raffle prize. As a reminder, the City offers various seasonal services throughout the year. Take a moment to visit the city’s website and check out the Seasonal Care section to review our guidelines for proper homeowner/landlord maintenance for the Fall Season and Winter Season. A yard waste application can also be downloaded from this page.

As you deck the halls this holiday season in your home, be fire smart. A small fire that spreads to a Christmas tree can grow large very quickly.

In 2023, the BDC donated $10,000 in Philanthropic Grants to non-profit organizations that positively impact the Berwyn community!

This opportunity is open to non-profit organizations in Spring and Fall of each year with up to $2,500 available to one organization. The applicants are reviewed by the BDC Philanthropic Committee each season and then approved by the BDC Board of Directors.

With the ribbon cut, the 2023 season successfully launched with 12 NEW small businesses, offering everything from hand-poured candles and curated apparel to gorgeous accessories and baked goods.

Now in its second year, the Berwyn Shops continues to grow in recognition as a community event space, unique destination, and vibrant mini shopping center. In fact, this homegrown project has already hosted 26 events, 7 artists, and 7 musicians. The vendors have also been spotlighted across several media platforms, including ABC7 Chicago, WGN, Univision, and Daytime Chicago!

The most popular classes taught at the Berwyn School of Music are piano, voice, and drum lessons. Another popular class is Friday Bandlab, where instructors teach youth and adult students how to write songs together. Jack fosters a culture of creativity, where he is planting the seed for a future generation of musicians to build a strong and vibrant music scene in Berwyn. Jack is quoted as saying “I didn’t choose Berwyn; it chose me, and that’s a long story for another day.”

LETTER FROM THE ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT MANAGER Welcome to the Economic Development Corner! We aim to support small businesses, cultivate a strong community, and connect entrepreneurs to available resources.

In 2023, we did this by re-vamping our outreach efforts and creating new partnerships. Specifically, we hosted 6 dynamic corridor roundtables throughout Berwyn. At each, business owners tried local cuisine, met fellow entrepreneurs, and learned about new financial opportunities directly from the experts.

Outside of roundtables, we also facilitated informational sessions, one-on-one grant application assistance, and unique educational events. A big thank you goes to the Cook County Small Business Source, Women’s Business Development Center, Illinois Restaurant Association, and Illinois Capital Development Board for partnering with us to support Berwyn!

Finally, as your new economic development team, Paola, Marcos, and I have enjoyed getting to know you, your business, and the Berwyn community. Over the past year, you have shared your successes, challenges, and concerns. Based on your input, we are collaborating with consultants to create a new economic development plan for the City of Berwyn.
