President
The
in his own words
B
efore I share my vision for 2014, I would like to personally thank my predecessor, Jon Fey, a devoted business leader who has given tirelessly to Berwyn. During his tenure as President of the Berwyn Development Corporation, we saw Berwyn recognized regionally and nationally for its coordinated business development and retention activities. One can also look at the burgeoning dining and entertainment venues on Roosevelt and the continued development of the Gateway Plaza on the west end of Cermak Road as a true testament to Jon’s dedication to Berwyn. Moving into 2014, the BDC will give its highest priority to economic development. To assist in attracting and retaining businesses and home buyers to Berwyn, I have asked two individuals to bring their expertise to the Economic Development and Chamber Services teams. John Aranza, of Horrorbles and Autre Monde Café & Spirits, will serve as Vice President of Economic Development, and Berwyn resident Jousef Mondragon will serve as Vice President of Chamber Services. Now, for the first time, all BDC commissions, led by members of our Board, will have direct representation at the executive level. This, in conjunction with the award winning BDC staff, will see Berwyn poised to have a phenomenal year.
Mal montoya, bdc President VP, Business & Community Development AztecAmerica Bank
I’m proud of the BDC’s innovative array of resources available to Berwyn businesses including programs designed to help develop and promote their products and services. Understanding the importance of access to capital, we recently introduced MicroLending to our commercial lending program. We’ll continue to examine all business corridors and how to best serve each, in order to create a better experience for those who live, work and shop in Berwyn. To this point, a recently completed comprehensive corridor analysis provided tremendous insight into business needs, concerns, and development opportunities. This critical information was used in a recent joint strategic planning session with the Mayor, Aldermen and the BDC Board of Directors. Now, I ask all of Berwyn, with its unique and diverse populations, to join the BDC in this renaissance, and show the rest of the region that Berwyn is truly a destination for one and all.

New Local Grocery Stores Focus on Fresh Berwyn has experienced a great deal of growth in recent years, attracting a variety of new food options from fast casual to fine dining as well as grocery chains like Meijer Marketplace. What’s more, two new grocery stores are set to open up later this year. The stores will bring jobs and enhance Berwyn’s quality of life with greater access to healthy fresh fruits, vegetables and meats.

TREASURER
Coming this summer, Torres Fresh Market will open on the northeast corner of 26th Street and Harvey Avenue, providing residents with a much needed local grocery option.
A long vacant site in the Depot District will be getting a new tenant this year. Familia Fresh Market is currently renovating the 12,000 square foot former grocery building across from MacNeal Hospital. The project’s owners previously ran Familia Foods, which successfully operated in Cermak Plaza for several years. With a strong customer base already in Berwyn, and the obvious need for a grocer in the Depot District, Familia Fresh Market is eager to open its doors this spring.
SECRETARY
Owner, Adolfo Linares, operates four other supermarkets in the Chicagoland area. He chose Berwyn for his fifth operation because he loves the city and feels there is a strong market demand to have a local grocer in east Berwyn. Torres Fresh Market’s approach is to provide exceptional customer service with an emphasis on great produce and meat. Mr. Linares anticipates hiring 30 full-time and 20 parttime employees. He plans to hire residents of Berwyn because he wants to establish a strong community market feel for his customers. The building will total approximately 16,000 square feet. There will be a 12,000 square foot market with an additional 4,000 square feet to be used for back of the house operations and a dedicated parking lot, which will have capacity for 35 vehicles.
Familia Fresh Market will focus its offerings on fresh meat and produce. The family grocer will also have a food stand with fresh prepared foods. The store will employ 10 full-time and 15 part-time workers. For shopper convenience, a parking lot next to the building will accommodate approximately 48 cars.

TIF Project Update CIGARS & STRIPES BBQ Lounge 6715 W. Ogden Avenue
I
f you’ve stopped by the Ogden Avenue staple Cigars & Stripes
BBQ Lounge recently, you’ve probably noticed a few changes. This full service lounge and cigar shop is touted for its craft beer selection, live entertainment and best-in-class smoked barbecue wings. Approved for TIF funding in late 2012, Cigars & Stripes has slowly but surely been changing things up. A new, expanded kitchen capitalizes on the rave

A
utre Monde Café & Spirits, 6727 W Roosevelt Road, was recognized with the George W. Ashby Award
for Business Excellence at the Berwyn Development Corporation’s (BDC) Annual Meeting on January 8, 2014. Opened in 2011, this pan-Mediterranean restaurant and bar was an adaptive re-use of a vacant storefront into a new destination restaurant. Autre Monde has the ambiance of a European wine bar and offers shared plates for dinner as well as Sunday brunch. Autre Monde’s list of accolades are many, including their most recent honors as the first Berwyn business to be recognized as a Michelin Guide Bib Gourmand and the first independent Green Seal Certified business in Berwyn. Autre Monde sets itself apart with farmto-table sourcing and a seasonal menu built around the flavors of Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Greece and Morocco. Partners in our COMMUNITY bsd100.org berwyn school district 100 The Board of Education approved two referendum questions for the March 18 election. These referendums are vital to ensure that we continue to provide Berwyn’s children with an excellent education in a safe environment. All 6 of our elementary buildings are in need of renovations to address serious problems with heating, ventilating, air conditioning, flooding, cracked walls and foundations, leaking roofs, mold and overcrowding. Space is a major concern. In 2003, we housed 3,388 students and this year enrollment increased 18.9% to 4,107. From 2008 to the present we have 516 more students with no additional funding or space, resulting in high numbers of students being forced transferred to other schools and the need to hire 19 additional staff. Unless the referendum passes, transfers will continue and the serious issues with heat and space needs will not be resolved. We need the support of our community and District 100 voters on March 18. For additional information please visit bsd100.org or call 708.795.2300.
