t’s springtime, the season of green leaves on the trees, flowers in the garden and warm breezes. Here at the BDC and in our volunteer commissions, we are creating community events, networking opportunities and educational seminars for you, the Berwyn community. In this issue of Berwyn Magazine, you will see expanded information about the host of events scheduled for this year. From Cruise Nites to the Route 66 Car Show and from Music, Art and Vintage in the Street to the Bungalow Tour, all of Berwyn’s events are a must see for both our residents and everyone in the entire Chicago area. The volunteers who work tirelessly on these events deserve many thanks as they bring untold benefit to our community through the value of their work and the economic impact of the visitors who come to visit us. These popular events are great opportunities to promote your business through sponsorships and direct advertising. And they are great fun to attend. I hope to see you there. On the business side, Berwyn Business Connect is a new regularly scheduled educational and networking event that features information that is useful to both existing and new businesses in Berwyn. It is a city-wide business roundtable meeting that meets monthly to provide Berwyn businesses a

place to share their successes and form partnerships as well as have an audience to troubleshoot areas of concern. Business owners can also make announcements on new products, services and specials. The meetings are open to all Berwyn businesses. In addition, the BDC staff and volunteer commissions have been creating educational seminars on topics ranging from the Benefits of LinkedIn and other social media to Every Door Direct Mail, a new and amazingly inexpensive way to do targeted, local bulk mail through the US Post Office. These seminars are scheduled periodically and are featured in the BDC’s email blast and on the BDC’s online calendar. To sign up for the BDC’s e-blast, visit Berwyn.net and click on the “Sign up for the BDC’s weekly e-blast” in the upper right hand corner of the home page. And don’t forget, the Berwyn Development Corporation’s mission is: “Through a shared vision with the community, the Berwyn Development Corporation is committed to those activities that support and contribute to the economic growth and vitality of our proud City.” Share your vision with us; join us; and become a member today.

A
s we wish away the last moments of winter and break into spring, the majority of us want to make the most of every moment to shake off our cabin fever and get outside. Among warm weather’s treasured activities is the outdoor eating experience. That sidewalk seat is a wonderful way to feel like you’re a part of the city’s energy. The fresh air, the birds chirping and the sun on your face turns an ordinary meal into a memorable one.

Public Meetings Set for Zoning Ordinance Update The City of Berwyn approved their new comprehensive plan last summer as part of Chicago Metropolitan Planning Association’s (CMAP) Local Technical Assistance (LTA) program. The plan was the result of a year-long process to map out the future of Berwyn’s land use. Also with the help of CMAP and the LTA program, the City will be updating its zoning ordinance to make it consistent with the newly adopted comprehensive plan. CMAP will be hosting two public meetings to gather input for the ordinance changes. The first meeting will be on Wednesday, May 8 at 6:30 pm in the Berwyn Police Department Community Room at 6401 W 31st St. The second meeting will take place on Saturday, May 11 from 10:30 am - 12:00 pm at Havlicek School located at 6401 W 15th Street. When was the last time you did a Google search on yourself? If you answered “never,” then we challenge you to do this after you read this article. Why? You should know what pages, profiles and information is easy accessible about you or your business and how it ranks in the search. Carefully review your postings, articles, contacts, pictures, comments made and received, and blogs. This quick test will give you a sense of your online reputation. In today’s world, your online presence is as tied to your reputation as anything. Even if you’re not currently looking for employment, you might be in the near future and you want to ensure that you are projecting a professional image. And businesses should consider how their customers would view their business in light of the search results. You might be surprised to find accounts that are no longer active or relevant to your life or that send out a message that doesn’t represent you or your business well. In this case, think about deleting them. Also review your contacts’ postings, pictures, and comments and ask them to remove any that are unprofessional. Put yourself in an employer’s or a customer’s shoes. Posts that are cleaner, less angry, and more positive tend to be more acceptable and productive for your online reputation.
gOOGLE PLACES ICON
Google is the quickest and easiest way to be found on the internet, getting more traffic than any other search engine.
If you own a business, you should verify if you’re on Google Places. If you are not, do not worry! You can add yourself to Google. Why? Google is the quickest and easiest way to be found on the internet, getting more traffic than any other search engine. In Google, business listings are called Places. Google displays Places listings on the first page which makes it easiest to get found. Make sure you optimize your listing by filling out all of the information and adding items like photos because Google gives preference to those with more complete listings in the search results. Spending some time may reap the rewards. Additionally, Google is mobile-ready and we know everyone has a smart phone these days!
When you do a Google search and find that your business is already listed, make sure you claim it. Even if it’s already there! By claiming, you are confirming that you are the owner, and more importantly claiming prevents others from unauthorized editing of your information. But if your business is not listed, you can add it at www.google.com/placesforbusiness. When setting up your Google Places, enter your contact information and business category. Please take special care to fill out your “business description” and “additional details” fields. Be sure to include keywords that best describe what someone might be looking for on the internet. Take advantage of these sections because they help with your ranking. Be creative.
We have your back! Go to our step-by-step tutorial on how to set your Google Places listing which can be found at www.berwyn.net/small-business-resources.

On March 20 Irving Principal Mary Havis, Board President Jim Swicionis and Superintendent Stan Fields traveled to Springfield at Governor Pat Quinn’s invitation to attend the Illinois Breakfast Challenge luncheon held at the Governor’s mansion. Mrs. Havis was also personally invited to participate in a panel discussion on Breakfast in the Classroom and the many benefits children who participate in a breakfast program enjoy. Our district’s health and wellness initiative has had a ripple effect on our school community. It is a normal occurrence to see various after school activities such as Zumba, yoga and running clubs. As our schools continue to practice what brought them their Healthier US School Challenge (HUSSC) awards in 2012, we continue to be amazed at the level of participation from the staff, students and their parents! nb98.org Berwyn District 98 On Saturday, March 2, 42 Lincoln Middle School students participated in the 27th annual Speech/Drama Festival. Also in attendance were several parents and their coaches Holly Striska, Lisa Tiess, and Sherry Campbell. Lincoln Middle School competed against 17 other schools from the western suburbs. In all, Lincoln students were awarded 49 individual ribbons, 48 first place award, and 1 second place award. District 98 would also like to congratulate Lincoln Middle School student Christopher Sanchez and student Kayla del Valle from Havlicek. Christopher was presented with the prestigious SCOTY award, for school citizenship. His numerous activities in school clubs as well as being on the honor roll, makes him a true role model. Kayla del Valle represented Havlicek in the Regional Spelling Bee and made it to the third round. berwynparks.org Berwyn Park District Check out the fun this summer!
