A word from our President. I would like to highlight yet another successful events season in our community. We were lucky to have some beautiful weather for the WeatherTech Berwyn Route 66 Car Show sponsored by Paisans Pizzeria & Bar that hosted 607 registered cars and brought out more than 25,000 attendees this year. In September, Berwyn’s Oktoberfest presented by Loyola Medicine and MacNeal Hospital was a fantastic way to ease into the Fall season in Berwyn. There is still plenty happening around our fair city, so check out WhyBerwyn.com for a full list of events and our business directory.

The BDC also launched the 2019 Berwyn Resident Survey, which is a follow-up to a property owner survey conducted in 2008-2009. This survey allows residents to voice their opinions and help identify community priorities in the coming years. Results from the survey and outcome from the Strategic Planning Session conducted on October 12th can be found on pages 12-13 of this issue. In the third quarter of 2019, we welcomed two new businesses with grand openings: Friendly Insurance Advisor Group and Alphabet Learning Center. This fall, we’re excited to announce the addition of Old Navy and Pet Supplies Plus to our retail mix. Both will open their doors just in time for the holiday shopping season. As this decade is coming to a close, Berwyn is set for even greater success in 2020. Enjoy the holiday season, remember to shop and support local, and Happy Holidays from everyone here at the BDC!

Economic development continues to thrive, and new programs are available for existing and potential business owners. Programs such as the Finish Line Grant and Pay as you Go program help to reinforce the already strong commercial investment climate in our community. In the first half of 2019, Berwyn saw more than $3.8 million invested in commercial property alone.

DEVELOPING

BERWYN

Berwyn has continued its steady economic development progress through the summer months. Recently, the BDC partnered with the City of Berwyn to create a dynamic vacancy tracking tool. This Vacancy Report, published quarterly on the BDC website, will help community stakeholders identify long-standing vacant properties and develop tools to address chronic issues. One such tool the BDC has developed to mitigate vacancies and improve properties is the Finish Line Grant program. The BDC is actively working with Berwyn’s business community to take advantage of these rehabilitation dollars. Since its launch this year, more than 20 business and property owners have expressed interest in this property improvement matching grant. Finish Line Grant applicants can apply for the reimbursement of 50% of eligible project costs, or up to $5,000. If you own a business or property in Berwyn, and plan on making improvements, please reach out to the BDC to see if you qualify. The BDC also helped welcome several new businesses with grand opening celebrations, including Friendly Insurance Advisor Group (2145 S Cuyler Ave) and Alphabet Learning Center (6958 W Windsor Ave). Later this fall, the BDC is excited to welcome Old Navy and Pet Supplies Plus, filling the last available retail spaces in Cermak Plaza. Both retailers plan on opening in time for the holiday shopping season. In addition to these new retailers, Berwyn is excited to welcome a new restaurant to Cermak Rd. The recently purchased 6710 W Cermak Rd location will be transformed into the next hot Berwyn eatery by the family behind Rustico in Oak Park. We look forward to sharing additional details as the project moves forward!

In 2019, the BDC moved to build on that survey from 10 years ago with greater depth, a broader scope and with a clear action plan to help cast the vision for the City of Berwyn.

Spread some holiday cheer this season with the Berwyn Township! Join fellow Berwynners and businesses in giving back to the community through the Holiday Cheer program, designed specifically for Berwyn residents who need help during the holiday season. Low-income families and individuals are matched with sponsors who provide food and gifts to make the holiday season a little brighter for everyone. Sponsors have the opportunity to get to know these families and individuals and can donate monetary gifts or coordinate a delivery with the Township for purchased gifts. The Township also organizes a Winter Coat Drive and has several drop off locations around Berwyn. If you have any winter coats and jackets, hats, scarves, and gloves that are gently used, please consider supporting local and donating this holiday season.

In August, the Berwyn Public Art Initiative launched its largest project to date: Art on Track, which will feature 30 free standing murals and 3 outdoor sculptures in addition to the 7 different murals already on display along Berwyn’s Depot District. 15 different local artists contributed to this unique collaboration, and their murals can be found between Harlem Ave and East Ave, on both Windsor and Stanley Aves. Don’t forget to bring your phone along for these Instagram-worthy works of art. The North Berwyn Park District, Berwyn Public Library and North Berwyn District 98 have also unveiled murals throughout the community over the past few months. Hit the town and check out these works of art solo or with friends and family. Head west on 16th St and you won’t be able to miss the sombrero mural on the corner of 16th St and Clarence Ave advertising Berwyn’s only Corrida del Mariachi 5K Run/Walk hosted by the North Berwyn Park District. On your next trip to the Berwyn Public Library, you will be greeted by a beautiful mural promoting literacy and diversity within our community. If appreciating art al fresco is your thing, gather the kids and check out each unique mural recently completed at each North Berwyn District 98 school playground. Keep an eye out for some Berwyn Easter eggs in some of the murals around town!
