ow’d we do it? Over the last several years Berwyn has become a model of aggressive and successful economic development and vitality. And in these troubled times, Berwyn’s achievement is exceptional. Many of our regional neighbors look at us Jon Fey with amazement and envy. And they SWF Products Berwyn Rt 66 Museum have good reason to be envious, as we have won national awards for our new developments and have set personal best records for numbers of new businesses and total economic investment. But what is it about Berwyn today that makes us so exceptional? Why are we succeeding where others languish? I see several factors that are unique to Berwyn: the citizens, the businesses, the city itself and the Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC). Each of them play an important part in the economic success and vitality of our proud city. Berwyn’s citizens have always been strong, solid folks with honest family values, hard-working ethics and community pride. They recognize the value of shopping at our local stores and keeping their sales tax dollars here to benefit the schools, the parks and the city itself. They know that strong businesses mean

lower taxes and higher economic values for their homes. They support their local businesses, invest in their homes, take pride in our schools and participate and appreciate our growing arts and cultural opportunities. Businesses are an essential component of Berwyn’s economic vitality. They are the engines that provide jobs, generate sales taxes, contribute property taxes and in many ways act as the face of our community. Berwyn businesses have been going beyond the standard. They have invested in updating their properties. They have opened new locations that create jobs and economic benefit where there was none. They believe in our community, and they take action. Many business owners give back to the community through volunteering, mentoring and lending their voices in support of development in Berwyn. The City of Berwyn has shown great leadership as well. They have prioritized economic development. They have streamlined the process to open a new business while maintaining the highest standards of code enforcement. The effectiveness of their participation in the attraction of new businesses to Berwyn cannot be overstated. The mission of the BDC is very simply, “a commitment to the economic growth and vitality of our proud city.” We are a public-private partnership with the City of Berwyn that provides chamber services and economic development to all segments of the Berwyn community. The BDC focuses its efforts on those activities that will improve the overall climate for local businesses and residents, in addition to encouraging the development of new commercial venues and employment opportunities. To support this mission, the BDC continually strives to develop new programs, services and special events that promote Berwyn businesses and the community. Our Executive Director and Staff work tirelessly to these ends, guided by a determined and knowledgeable Board of Directors. All of these elements of Berwyn’s success – the citizens, the city, the businesses and the BDC – work together to accomplish great things and with your continuing cooperation, support and participation, we will make Berwyn the best place to work, live, learn and grow.

Discover Berwyn’s Depot District The Depot District has been at the center of this year’s chart topping redevelopment and new business growth for Berwyn. The Depot District is Berwyn’s traditional downtown area featuring quaint shops and restaurants housed within a charming collection of unique storefronts, and the recent developments have made the corridor more family-friendly than ever. Whether families decide to spend time treasure hunting through movie posters or vintage toys at Reel Art Collectibles, indulging in frozen novelties and ice cream at Over the Rainbow Ice Cream Parlor, or grabbing a bite to eat at Brando’s Beef & Pizza, the Depot District offers plenty to discover. One of the most exciting additions to the Depot District has been the highly anticipated opening of Bounce Sportsplex at 3310 S Grove Ave on the ground floor of the Municipal Parking Facility. This Bounce offers high-tech batting cages multi-sport training and with an indoor multipurpose field. educational facility spans

17,000 square feet and includes a multi-purpose turf field, batting cages, and a half basketball court. Bounce Sports offers practice space to youth and adult leagues and specializes in training for soccer, baseball, softball, lacrosse, and basketball. Bounce Sports is estimated to bring over 10,000 players from 15 western suburbs and Chicago into Riddles Comedy Club opens the first the Depot District. week of November. For those looking for nightlife options, Riddles Comedy Club is the new entertainment hot spot. The owner brings over 15 years of experience in the comedy business to his new comedy club located at 6910 Windsor Ave. Riddles hosts national and local comedians with shows on Friday and Saturday nights and open mic nights throughout the week. In need of a night cap? Off the Traxx, located at 3144 S Oak Park Ave, is the latest addition to the Depot’s bar scene. Reminiscent of a vintage train stop watering hole, the décor will take you back to days of old. Once inside, you’ll notice the hardwood floors and exposed brick as well as copper tin ceilings accented with exposed duct work and industrial lighting. Train equipment and memorabilia line the walls. A light food menu compliments an extensive drink menu. Positioned as Berwyn’s transit-oriented district, the Depot can be navigated through a range of transportation options, including public transit via Metra’s BNSF Railway and Pace Bus Service, biking and walking. Drivers can also find plenty of street parking or low-cost options in the five-level parking facility. What’s more, a streetscape project is on the horizon. At the City Council meeting on September 25, the Request for Qualifications for the Streetscape Design and Engineering Project was approved. This marked the first step towards transforming the Depot District’s overall appearance. The anticipated design will feature variations to current street furniture, lighting, signage, parking and general landscape and streetscape improvements. Appreciating the seasons change will be even more serene while sitting in the Depot’s new pocket park. On September 15, the Berwyn Development Corporation, Berwyn Park District, and Mayor Lovero dedicated the park

ASK DR. RON How does my back pain cause pain into my butt and leg?

Pain in the buttocks and legs can be caused by an impinged (pinched) nerve as it leaves the spinal cord. Pressures on the nerve can be caused by a herniated disc or spine degeneration (arthritis). Inflammation within the low back causes local back pain as well as increased pressure on the nerve. Once a nerve is impinged the function becomes altered. Pain can be felt along the whole course of the nerve. The pain can be severe and lead to possible tingling and numbness into the leg. Prolonged untreated bouts of buttocks and leg pain can lead to muscle weakness and leg dysfunction. The majority of people experiencing leg pains get better with therapy (usually a few weeks or months). Because the pain can have different causes and levels of impairment it is always safe to seek medical care.

28th Annual Charles E. Piper Award Honoring Mayor Robert J. Lovero

A

nnually, the BDC membership selects an individual who best exemplifies the energy and industrious spirit of one of Berwyn’s original developers, Charles E. Piper. The BDC is proud to present this respected community award to Mayor Robert J. Lovero to honor his achievements and contributions towards the growth and development of Berwyn’s business community.

Township Democratic Committeeman (2005 to Present), Berwyn Township 708 Mental Health Board (1987 to 1990), Berwyn Development Corporation, Blue Ribbon Historical Committee, Local Law Enforcement Advisory Board, Delta Theta Phi Law Fraternity – Sir Edward Coke Chapter, Alpha Delta Gamma National Fraternity (Alpha Chapter – President), and co-chairman of the Berwyn Holiday Fund.

Having resided in Berwyn for fifty years, Mayor Lovero has made public service and business expansion an integral part of his everyday life. He began his grammar school education at Berwyn’s St. Mary of Celle and continued on to graduate from Fenwick High School. He graduated from Loyola University Chicago with a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice before receiving his doctorate at Northern Illinois University College of Law and passing the bar in 1981. In 1982, after becoming a licensed attorney, Mayor Lovero served as Assistant City Attorney and City Prosecutor to the City of Berwyn. He also practiced at a few Chicago law firms before opening his own law practice within Berwyn that continues today.

Mayor Lovero’s public service experience started in his youth while participating in Boy Scout Troop 63 at St. Mary of Celle in Berwyn; he rose through the ranks and earned the achievement of Eagle Scout. He continued serving the City of Berwyn as 7th Ward Alderman from November 2000 to April 2009. Elected as Berwyn’s Mayor in May of 2009, he has played a vital role in the business development renaissance occurring within the City.

Mayor Lovero has been an active member in the following organizations: West Central Municipal Conference (Executive Board from 11/2010 to present), American Bar Association, Chicago Bar Association, West Suburban Bar Association, Justinian Society of Lawyers, Illinois State Bar Association, the Italian-American Civic Organization of Berwyn (President 1996 to 1998 and 2010 Man of the Year), Berwyn Democratic Organization,

In collaboration with the BDC, the Mayor has led the City of Berwyn in creating a more businessfriendly environment within City Hall and in redefining what it means to be a Berwyn business. “Through overhauling the permit process to hosting direct meetings with prospective businesses, I wanted to make a strong business community a cornerstone of my administration. This partnership with the business community has led to a lot of success in Berwyn, and I’m honored to receive this award,” stated, Mayor Lovero. The Piper Award dinner took place on November 3 at Pierre’s Banquets.

Local Resources to Grow Your Business BDC on Instagram @bdc_berwyn

Photo Sharing Reinvented: Get the #BerwynBuzz with Instagram Instagram is a free app for Android and iPhone that provides a fast and simple way to share your photos with friends and family. Take a picture with your smart phone, choose a filter to transform its look and feel and then post it to Instagram. Instagram users can follow each other’s photo postings and “like” the photos. The app gives everyone the ability to be a creative photographer! The app also allows you to share your pictures with your #BerwynBuzz Facebook and Twitter followers. Instagram is a community of users and focuses solely on posting photographs. In order to organize the photos, the app uses hashtags (words or phrases that follow the # symbol) to group pictures and allows these hashtags to be searched. The BDC recently opened an account where we will be posting pictures of grand openings, community events and other activities. You can keep in the loop by following our username @bdc_berwyn. We have created the hashtag #BerwynBuzz so that users can easily find our photos.

Instagram can be as powerful as you want it to be. There are business owners that jump in with both feet and have their customers get involved in the sharing process. For example, at a customer event, a restaurateur announced a custom hashtag and had signage around the event to encourage attendees to take pictures of their friends, the restaurant and their food. It was a simple plan and helped spread the word about the restaurant opening to all of the attendees’ friends and social media followers. Maybe a dish looks so good from a picture on Instagram that the viewer decides to try it next time they are out. Or they see a restaurant that they thought about going to – but never did – and now the picture lured them in. The possibilities are endless and that’s what marketing is all about! Some businesses have run contests for posting great pictures and have rewarded those customers with either a small gift or just a simple mention that thanks them. And who doesn’t want that! There are many ways to use social media. The most important step is starting, testing the waters and seeing what works for you. There’s no wrong way. So have fun, experiment and happy Instagramming! Each of them eventually discovers that they are dead, and they are heading toward Judgment Day. When no producers wanted to stage the production, fearing its unusual combination of fantasy and drama, Vane decided to produce it himself.
