The First Word Dear Parents, The importance of communication in today’s world cannot be denied and this importance increases when we consider communication between parents and children. For it is when these channels are open, that children can confidently turn to parents with their questions regarding the why and what of different matters. Children are curious about things around them and what they see and hear from peers and TV, etc. It is important that children are shielded from topics which are age inappropriate, so we should keep a check on what they view on TV and computer and also on the friends they make. We as parents must remember the following when faced with queries from our children: When a child wants some information, we must answer according to the age of the child. Children can sense when we try to evade answering so we must be open without being embarrassed by the question . No matter what the question is , we must not make fun of the child especially in front of others. No parent is a know all, so if we do not know the answer or are not sure how to answer the query, we should very honestly admit so. Children look up to us and learn many important lessons of life from us so we should try to satisfy a child’s dilemma with patience , honesty and understanding. It is through this that we can ensure our children blossom into well balanced and mature adults, able to solve their problems and may be those of others.
warmest regards,
Huma Moin

BSS Assessment Policy Beaconhouse School System lays total emphasis on providing quality education and in line with this focus is always looking at ways of improvement and innovations in the education system, After conducting a research on our current assessment policy for class I till III and through the feedback received, a revised assessment policy was proposed for class I – III. The revised assessment policy is in compliance with international standards and practices in education following are the salient features of the policy. Only Two formal assessments per term instead of three. Focus on informal ongoing assessment Assessment will be spaced out evenly with no assessments week in each term i.e. no more than two assessments per week. Parent will be notified through a note in the student’s homework diary.
Global Dignity Day To foster character development among students, a variety of activities were planned on October 20, 2011, to celebrate Global Dignity Day. The students of Classes I, II and III watched videos and the Classes IV and V students read the ‘Dignity Principles’ as introductory activities. The class discussions that followed were aimed at helping students understand the concept of dignity and its importance. To the younger students, ‘dignity’ meant ‘everyone is the same/all people are equal’, ‘treat everybody with respect' and ‘help others without hurting their feelings’, whereas the older students discussed the importance of dignity and reflected upon whether we incorporate it in dealing with others and the need to do so particularly when we help others in different situations. Students made headbands and badges to commemorate Global Dignity Day and shared their own ideas and stories orally, in writing as well as through role play.
Universal Children’s Day On November 20, people all over the world celebrated Children’s Day where everyone talked about children’s rights: their rights of special protection including their right to association with both parents, human identity as well as the basic needs for food, education, health care , etc. We, at Beaconhouse, understand that with rights come duties and responsibilities. We understand that we have an important role to play in making the world a better place to live . Hence the teachers helped their students select a presentation for annual concert that had a related message for the other children.
