Tips for running in the Frosty 5K By VICKY SMITHEE Contributor

The city of Frisco is hosting the Frosty 5K and Merry Mile on Dec. 10 to warm up the holiday season. Dr. Troy Diehl, a doctor of osteopathic medicine at Centennial Medical Center, gives recommendations on how to run safely and properly in the cooler weather. Q: Do muscles and joints need longer to warm up when the temperature is colder outside? A: They don’t necessarily need more time to warm up because of weather, but they definitely benefit from pre-run stretching and a solid base of nutrients the days before and the day of a run to ensure Dr. Troy Diehl

proper function and recovery. Q: Are there any warm-up activities that should be done inside? A: As long as there is some effort to stretch or warm up at a low intensity, that is good. The more important aspect of getting ready for a run outside is to ease into the run while outside and let your muscles warm up in the cold air, as this allows your body to acclimate to the cold. Q: Are there any specific items of clothing that are more necessary during the winter? A: Hat, gloves, long sleeves and pants. Keep the skin covered. In addition, layers are important with moisture wicking layers worn next to the skin, but not tight layers. The outer layer should be focused on wind resistance. The idea is to stay warm but not create excessive sweat because this will actually cause your body to cool too

much. Q: How cold is too cold to run outdoors? A: It depends, but I would recommend not running below 32 degrees, mainly because of the increased risk of coming across ice and increased loss of body heat. Q: After finishing a run, should you cool down outside, or can you go directly inside? A: The most important thing after running is stretching either inside or outside, which helps decrease the risk of aches and strain for the next run. Also, don’t allow yourself to get too cool; after the run, relayer your clothes and remove wet clothing. Vicky Smithee contributes to neighborsgo on behalf of Centennial Medical Center.

BRIEFS Frisco mom to host fifth annual blood drive on Saturday Monique Pritchard, wife, mother and Carter BloodCare Advocate of the Year, invites the community to participate in the fifth annual Emma Pritchard Memorial Blood Drive from 7:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church, 7659 Preston Road in Frisco. Monique Pritchard was a blood donor long before she had a personal experience with the need for blood transfusions. Her baby daughter, Emma, received blood transfusions while undergoing treatment for a sudden and severe disease onset. Ultimately, Emma lost her fight against the disease, but because of blood donors, Pritchard and her husband were able to spend extra time with their daughter while doctors worked to help her. Today, Pritchard pours her passion into an annual blood drive as a legacy to Emma. Potential donors can be 16 years old with a parent’s consent. Ages 17 and older may donate independently, and there is no age cap for giving blood. All donors must weigh at least 110 pounds, be in good general health and present a photo ID. Ideally, a donor should also eat a good meal and drink plenty of fluids before giving blood. To receive more information, volunteer or register for an appointment time, contact Monique Pritchard at 469-261-4591 or by email at monique.pritchard@ya-

PETS OF THE WEEK

BOGEY

Breed: Labrador retriever mix Bogey is a happy and healthy 5month-old pup. Rescued from a local shelter, he is learning about the world and how nice it can be. On his first day at his foster mom’s house, he would not come inside, even with the door left open for him. It took him three hours to decide to venture in and meet the other dogs. He now likes to chase and be chased by his new canine friends. Born in April, Bogey weighs 55 pounds, so he will be a big boy when fully grown. He has taken to his crate and has never had an accident. Bogey’s new family must be willing to continue helping him learn to be a good dog, which will require their patience and time. The reward for this family will be a loyal and loving companion.

MOLLY

Breed: domestic shorthair Molly was born in March on the streets. She and her siblings were fed by a friend for months before being rescued. While her brothers were released after being neutered, Molly, who responded positively within two weeks to human touch, was brought in to to further learn to be loved and find a forever home. Molly adores a good back scratch and will rub all over the walls just to get attention. She’s purring and happy with a beautiful healthy medium length coat. She gets along fine with other cats but is still weary of dogs. She’s still shy, and it will take her longer to adjust to your home. She may not ever be the most outgoing kitty in town, but she certainly is one of the most loving ones. For more information or to see all adoptable pets, visit friscohumanesociety.com.
