continuing to support and further the arts in the midst of a difficult economy.

S

haron Roland is the director for Frisco Arts, a nonprofit organization that works to preserve, support and develop the arts in Frisco.

What growth and development would you like to see in the arts community this year? We would like to see more collaboration and involvement from art departments in local schools, colleges and universities; a growing volunteer base; an increase in quality and caliber of artistic exhibitions, musical and theater productions in Frisco; more collaboration between North Texas artist groups and a better online presence via our new website, which will debut early 2012, and social media.

What are some highlights for the arts in 2012? Highlights include partnering with Frisco Square for the third annual Arts in the Square event, the fundraising gala in April and a season of fabulous theater productions by Frisco Sharon Area Children's Theatre Roland and Frisco Community Theatre. What arts event are you most looking forward to in 2012? Our major fundraising party gala in April, during which we will relive the disco era with a fun night of themed costumes, dancing, great food and casino games. What are your hopes for the arts community

What challenges and opportunities do you anticipate for the arts community in 2012? We face the challenge and opportunity of

How will this year differ from last year? Last year was our first year at the Frisco Discovery Center. This year, Frisco Arts is more prepared and knowledgeable about how to plan, staff, market and manage successful events. What are some ways community members can get involved in the arts scene in 2012? They can volunteer for an event, donate money, follow us on Twitter, “like” our Facebook page or join our email list to keep up with what’s happening, or sponsor an arts event.

Rescue group continues to battle overpopulation STAFF REPORT

J

ulie Wilson is the president of the Frisco Humane Society board, a rescue organization that works to provide homes for unwanted or abused animals. What challenges and opportunities do you anticipate for animal shelters/rescue services in 2012? We all continue to deal with the animal overpopulation problem. As a rescue group, we have the opportunity and responsibility to keep people informed about how to best care for their pets. We know the importance of keeping your cat inside because indoor cats have longer life spans and that by merely putting a collar and current ID tags on your pet, you can get them back quicker and safer if they get lost. What are some of the needs animal

shelters/rescue services will face in 2012, and how can community members help? Many more animals could be saved if the community would consider opening their homes and hearts to a homeless animal in need — either by adopting or fostering with a rescue group. You would be doing so much good by educating your friends and family on the importance of spaying/neutering their pets. What are some of Frisco Humane Society’s goals for 2012? We are excited about planning our second annual Fido 5K for the spring. We are also starting a new Pledge Pals donation program, which will help cover the costs associated with getting FHS dogs and cats ready for their forever homes. How do you think this year will differ from last year? Economic hardships are happening more and more. The loss of a job or home is forcing people to give up their pets.

Julie Wilson cuddles with foster dog Ladybird (from left), foster dog Piper, Riley, foster dog Radar and Penny. What should those considering animal adoption in 2012 do to prepare? Owning a dog/cat means starting out on the right foot. Getting a pet on the spur of the moment, without knowing what to expect is just setting yourself and the pet up to fail. Do research on breeds to make sure the pet will be a good fit for you, your

family and your lifestyle. Just as you plan to have a child, we should plan for a pet. Is there anything else you’d like to share? With a pet, you will smile and laugh more. They are great listeners and will help balance your priorities and get more enjoyment out of life.
