Former stray offers love to Frisco mother KATHRYN HORNER fhsadmin@friscohumanesociety.com

risco resident Ann Burt knew she had found a gem after adopting Mindy, a 2-year-old Shih Tzu mix, from the Frisco Humane Society in December 2010. Burt had been looking for a little dog she could play with, take on long walks and who would also be a gentle companion for her aging mother, LaVerne Bailey, who had recently lost her 12-year-old poodle, Tiffany. “I had checked out two or three other dogs online, but none were ‘just perfect’,” Burt said. “We had decided maybe our beloved Tiffy could not be replaced and had given up on finding another dog.” Then they found Mindy on the FHS website and were moved by her story. Mindy and Milo were strays who lived for months at a country truck stop,

scrounging for scraps to survive but running away from people. After many attempts, Mindy was finally caught and brought to the FHS foster home of McKinney resident Mary Jane Stewart where Mindy quickly learned just how good her life had become. Stewart remembers how filthy Mindy was that day. “Mindy had to be shaved because she was so heavily matted and dirty,” she said.

“You couldn’t even tell she was white in color, but Mindy was the perfect little lady from the time she arrived.” Burt knew that Mindy’s loving personality would be a perfect match for them. Her happiest place is on either hers or Bailey’s lap. A few months after adopting Mindy, Bailey fell and fractured her hip. “Mindy has been an amazing companion, guard and buddy for mother,” Burt said. “Mindy visited the skilled nursing facility almost daily until Bailey recovered and returned home.” Mindy is also showing love to others in the nursing facility. “Mindy made friends with several of the residents, and they looked forward to her happy face and sweet demeanor,” Burt said. “She seemed to know who needed the most therapy, and showered them with love. “We cannot imagine our life without her. I know we are going to have a long and loving relationship.” Kathryn Horner contributes to neighborsgo on behalf of Frisco Humane Society.
