.Avahof grand magasin. Salzburg, Austria Diploma 2017 Atelier Valentin Bearth, director Walter Angonese Assistants Francesca Torzo & Mihail Amarei

The choice of the program is related with the intention to offer a large public covered space, for both tourists and locals, which the city center of Salzburg is missing. The stores inside display and sell luxury items and clothing that are hard to find in the historical center where the shops are mainly over-focused on tourism and the Mozart culture. The project settles in continuity for height, volume and alignment with the urban fabric and at the same time acts as landmark in the historic cityscape of roof slopes, bell towers and domes evocating a baroque imaginary. The entrance guides visitors naturally towards a long nave with niches, just as in cathedrals iconography, where a plurality of scales composes a scenography of grandeur and intimacy. The wings of the nave are defined by an articulated system of niches that funtion as showcases and changing rooms and create a more intimate world of shops overlooking the river and the city. The rhythm of the tectonic logic of the construction system of pillars and concrete slabs is shown in facade throughout the vertical arrangement of prefabricated concrete panels finished with lithic inlays.

.Theatre studio in Campo dei Miracoli. Venice, Italy Master I Atelier Pia Durish & Aldo Nolli

I decided to design a theatre studio that can be used as a rehearsal room and as a show space for the exploration of more experimental modes of performance. A place where artists and people can meet and exchange ideas. The choice of the program is related with the will to offer to the neighbourhood of Canareggio a program that could serve the primary school and the Reinassance church Santa Maria dei Miracoli, situated in the same square, and as well the larger theatre Malinbran, located just one minute walking away from the site. The idea was to create a long, narrow, street-like space where, differently from the former theatres, the public, the technicians, the architecture are literally on stage with the actors and where the city can become part of the scenography. Even if volumetrically the building detaches from the urban morphology it does not want to compete with the church. The theatre in fact sets back from the square and the street and is positioned on top of a one floor story basement where all the functions such as foyer, reception, cafe, fitting rooms and all the services are placed.

.Max Bill foundation. Zumikon, Switzerland Master II Atelier Jonathan Sergison

This semester the atelier focused on the theme of cultural institutions. Each student had to develop a concept for an exhibition space that could host the permanent collection of the Swiss architect, artist and designer, Max Bill. The task was to consider how his existing atelier house can be reconfigured with a new programme of exhibition spaces that can be accommodated within the existing and neighbouring site of Zumikon. The site is located enclosed between a road and a stream near the artist’s house. The main facade, hosting the entrance, is aligned parallel to the direction of the road while the volume follows the geometry of the landscape embracing the existing trees. The plan is composed by a sequence of rooms that differ in size and proportion and develop along diagonal views. The exhibition space is organized around a central courtyard that functions as a sculpure garden with which one constantly has a visual relationship. The path ends in a gallery, resting area, opened to the landscape, that guides the visitors back to the entrance space. The connection with the Haus Bill is made possible through a walkway and a bridge accessible from the back of the building.

.New parlament house in Ouagadougou. Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso, Africa Bachelor III Atelier Diebedo Francis Kéré in collaboration with Nadia Ruseva

The project is a political statement following the events in the Burkina Faso revolution in October 2014. Mass protests resulted in the torching of the existing parliament and put an end to the president’s dictatorship. The intention of this parliament project is to establish a new standard for public buildings in Africa with the purpose to embody the new democratic values and partecipation for a new Burkinabe nation. The focal point of the project is the debating chamber while all related parliament functions are organized as a spiral around it. The volume peels off gradually from the ground creating a series of ramps inside while all external spaces are shaded and open to the public. The extreme desert-like climate in the Sahel and the poor economic situation in Burkina Faso required a design that takes as much as possible advantage from the natural resources such as wind and sun. A concrete permeable skin gives unity to the facade and allows natural ventilation strategy. The big concrete roof is orientated in order to screen the sun’s heat and sunlight.

.Holiday house in Tavolara. Tavolara island, Sardinia, Italy Bachelor II Atelier Valentin Bearth

The uninhabited Tavolara island looks like a majestic limestone massif overlooking the sea and nowadays it host just two restaurants and a private military area. The project of a holiday house, seen as a place where you can escape from the everyday life, offered the possibility to investigate the meaning of an unconventional way of living. The house is accessible from a portico located adjacent to the main existing walkway path. A main staircase connects the entrance with the level of the two symmetrical open plan bedrooms where the view towards the bushes gives the feeling of protection. The lower floor functions as a concrete basement that adjusts to the terrain’s slope and on top of which the kitchen, the common area and the terrace open the view to the landscape.

.Social housing in el Raval. Barcelona, Spain Bachelor II Atelier Valentin Bearth

The plot is located in el Raval, one of the oldest historical neighborhoods that marks the border between the historical city centre known as “Ciutat Vella” and the “Eixample” area. The project is inserted within the urban morphology and follows its traces articulating semi public open spaces, a courtyard and a green area on the back. Four apartments are organized in each floor that share the same balcony that functions not only as access and circulation but also as a shared multifuncional space.

.A covered courtyard for Monchique monastery. Monchique’s monastery reuse, Porto, Portugal Master I Atelier Martin Boesh in collaboration with Juliette Blatter

Monchique’s monastery is located in an heterogeneous urban context of the historical heart of Porto. This complex is in an advanced state of ruin and characterized by a composition of buildings that differ in scale, height and sizes. Starting from a precise analysis of the neighborhood, the idea of a space dedicated to architecture for the diploma students has progressively developed as an extension of the Facultade de Arquitectura Universitade do Porto, which today requires more work spaces for its students. The need to provide a large multifunctional central space, where students can perform any activity needed has been satisfied designing a large metal structure that covers the existing outdoor courtyard. This element became the main reasearch theme of the project. After studying references and evaluating several possibilities, our solution consists in align and connect the different heights of the buildings adding another floor.

.Territorial Traces. The Limit, Boulevard Périphérique, Paris, France Bachelor III Atelier Made in, lecturer Francois Charbonnet in collaboration with Elena Blanchaert

The aim of the research was to investigate the manifold understandings of the notion of “territorial trace”. The project was developed in groups of two, working with textual research, oral narrative argumentations and architectural representation. Starting from the definition of the word “territory” we identified the city wall as the first form of architecture with the aim of limiting a territory. The city in fact was surrounded by walls since ancient times. With time, each wall was destroyed and its site built up or transformed into a street. We focused on the case of the city of Paris where the boulevard Periphériqué was built to replace the Thiers Wall. Today this highway represents the limit between the largely privileged space inside the city and the suburbs or banlieues. Even if the massive wall was demolished, today the void brought the same effect of the wall: enclosing the city. The incessant traffic is perceived as a difficult barrier to cross. As the accesses to the city before was through gates today is through the walkways crossing the Periphériqué. Analysing the limit which is represented by the Periphériqué, we investigated on the three cases in which it manifests itself: elevated, at the same level of the city and excavated. For each of these cases, we proposed an utopic project which expresses a way to overcome this limitation.

.Hoofddorp island fort. in collaboration with Serge Schoemaker Architects Hoofddorp, the Netherlands

The redevelopment design of Fort near Hoofddorp transforms the 8100 m² world heritage site into a 300-seat open theatre and restaurant. It envisions a conversion and restoration of both the concrete fort building and the island on which it is situated, saving the monument from further decline. My contribution to the project was working for the executive drawings and the interior images.

.Bussum garden studio. in collaboration with Serge Schoemaker Architects Bussum, The Netherlands

The project replaces an existing shed in the garden separated from main house situated in Bussum. This garden house has the function of workspace, studio and bike garage. The dark wooden facade made with the rough wooden black painted shingles is in contrast with the light and clean interior. I worked throughout the entirity of the project; from initial design to final construction.
