FRANKESTEIN FRANKESTEIN Although I had my first contact with Frankenstein few years ago, this story belongs to the 18th century. In Ingolstadt, south Germany, a young student of chemistry, biology, natural philosophy and anatomy named Victor Frankenstein gave life to the creature who, during the entire narrative, has no name. It is a thought-provoking book that describes the journey of a monster, your self-acceptance a n d , s o m e h o w, t h e m a n according to Rousseau.

“We are good by nature but corrupted by society”.

In one of the most exciting parts of the book, in my opinion, the creature naturally learns everything that makes a man go o d. It acquires knowledge and feels for the first

time love and gentleness just by observing a humble family.

“I did not sleep the night. Everything about this family looked perfect, they had a house, food, warmth, they had each other, and still they were sad.”

Frankenstein came in one night. There was a group of friends around the fireplace when one of them suggested that each one would invent their own ghost story and then the brilliant mind of Mary Shelley idealized one of the most famous literary works of terror of the planet. It deals with prejudices, fear, and a critique of the superficial look of society related to the things around it. I highly recommend.

THE RIVER, THE RIVER, THE RIVER THE RIVER, THE RIVER, THE RIVER The third bank of the river tells the story about a father who one day decides that he would spend the rest of his life on a boat on the river near his house. His wife and kids start to worry about him and speculate on the reason why he is behaving that way. Some say that he is going crazy and others even say that he is the next Noah. João Guimarães Rosa is a fantastic author that is mostly known by his capacity of inventing new words. In “ The third bank of the river”, Rosa talks about life, death and lost. It is my favorite short story because it leaves many questions and reflections to be made.

I, down the river, lost in the river, inside the river…

the river.

Death and Life of Severino When I read this book I was 12 years old and was in the 7° grade. The teacher’s name was Simone and I had always read with my classmates at school. During the reading we watched the animation of the book on the projector. The book talks about Severino, a retirante from Pernambuco, who was looking for a better life. But, he had been through several problems, like hunger, thirst, drought, long walks and the contact with death for achieving his goal. This book made me reflect about the lives of these people who had

nothing and always continue trying to be someone in life without giving up. And I also liked how the author portrayed the indifference of the characters in the beginning of the book. So, after the reading, I guess that I started thinking more about the others. I started to think that everyone has a story of difficulties that we don’t know about.

“And all of us Severinos with the same lives will die of the same”

Clarice Lispector was born in Ukraine, but immigrated with her parents and sisters to Brazil. She even studied law for a time and then took up journalism. Lispector is one of Brazil’s most important authors. Her best work is made in the form of short stories. The collection Laços de Famîlia focus on moments of epiphany of the protagonists while dealing with everyday life situations.

Everything in the world began with

Born in 1902, Carlos Drummond de Andrade was the most important voice in the second phase of the Modernist Movement in Brazil. Besides that, he was also a journalist, author of cronicas and literary critic. His experiments with poetic form and his often ironic treatment of realistic themes reflect his concern with the situation of the modern man in his fight for freedom and dignity. In 1962, Andrade was director of the historical section of the National Historical and Artistic Heritage Service of Brazil. He died 25 years later, in August 17.

Brazilian poet, novelist, and short-story writer, Machado de Assis was born in 1839 in Rio de Janeiro. In a deep-rooted pessimism and disillusionment that would be insupportable were it not disguised by flippancy and wit. He became the first president of the Brazilian Academy of Letters in 1896 and held the office until his death.

“one of the roles of man is to shut his eyes and keep them shut to see if he can continue into the night of his old age the dream curtailed in the night of his youth.”
