Wow, I can hardly believe we are in December and Christmas is only just around the corner. Time is such a funny thing isn't it? In so many ways this year has felt never ending yet, now that we are here, it feels like it's flown by! With time in mind, these next four weeks are sure enough going to travel at the speed of light as we enter the busiest period of trade for our industry. Given the fact that many of our clients have not had the attention of treatments in quite some time due to lockdowns and overflowing appointment books, our days are getting longer as the silly season sets upon us. During this time, it's crucial that you be gentle with yourself. Keep in mind your energy on a physical, mental and emotional level and give yourself space to refresh, refuel and replenish your cup between clients. Food is always a staple that will either nourish or punish you through back-to-back clients, so this month, we've included some easy to make and bloody delicious (if I do say so myself!) recipes from two of my favourite nutritionists, Georgie Gunn and Fiona Tuck. Considering post-Christmas celebrations generally end in talk of resolution (with the overindulgence of food at the forefront of our mind), I want you to truly spend a moment considering what your resolution for the new year is. For me, I'm hopeless at sticking to a resolution, so instead, I find one word that I hope will serve me throughout the year. In 2020, my word was 'considered', which sat on a post-it note on my computer daily to remind me and keep me accountable.

Beaute Industrie || Issue 04

If like me, a resolution doesn't feel quite right but a word for the year does, I would love you to share it with me over in our Beaute Industrie Facebook Community for everyone to see. When I share things with others and 'put them out to the universe', they generally fall into place more easily than if i didn't. I'm not saying that, 2021 won't be without it's challenges, but it is about looking at the light, the shadow and too the opportunities that present themselves looking towards the year ahead. Excitingly, we are BACK for 2021 with our in person events! Kicking off our calendar is our Annual Strategy Summit on January 18th. This event is a hybrid event so you can join us for connection in person, or connect with us virtually from your home, office or treatment room! On behalf of our incredible team here at Beaute Industrie, we wish you a happy end to the new year and a fun and festive time. Until next time, Stay Connected.

YEAR THE

2020 that was

We came, we saw pivoted, we conquered. In a year when we reckoned with climate catastrophe, business closures and a global pandemic which pushed us into the face of a National recession, we also witnessed the triumph of technology, the power of retail and the unity of our industry.

Bushfires, floods, a global pandemic and an industry wide closure. Goodbye, 2020.

# C O N V E R S A T I O N S

To say that 2020 hasn't been the year everyone had planned for is an understatement to say the least. While we faced one of the harshest Summer seasons in a long time, many of us were celebrating the farewell to 2019, naively cheers-ing full champagne glasses in hopes for the following year to be better unfortunately, that hope was not fulfilled. There were ups and downs that made up the 365 days that has been 2020. Some downs were notable more than unforgettable, which taught us resilience and gave us uncountable lessons to learn. The blackening charcoal remains as the year started off with Black Summer; a period of unusually intense bushfires in many parts of Australia making it a heartbreaking start to the year that no one could forget. With the initial announcement in the month of June 19' describing an early start to the Summer season (not normally noted until August), the acting director sent warning based on the forecast noting advanced dry conditions and a lack of soil moisture. The perfect breeding ground for wildfire to spread. By the time we were three months into the year, just enough to stop writing 2019 on documents and adapt to the year change of 2020, an estimated 18.6 million hectares was destroyed, over 5,900 buildings, killing at least 34 people and driving nearly three billion animals to be impacted, some endangered while others declared extinct. Pleas reached out to the nation for unity and solidarity in the spirit of Australia's far and wide to dig deep, donate and do whatever one can to provide for those who had been caught in the face of the fires. Off the back of these cries, we saw a tremendous amount of strength and resilience, shining not burning through the ashes with 'Empty Esky' and 'Spend with Them' campaigns set to help rebuild the small towns which were hit the hardest.

Another notable event that happened this year was the extreme rain which doused fires and caused catastrophic flooding throughout the country. In a season of extremes punctuated by raging wildfires, scorching summer temperatures and long-term drought, our Australian weather took a dramatic turn by soaking soil, enraging rivers and drenching dams left, right and centre. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology reported widespread rainfall totals above 200 millimeters (8 inches) in just 24 hours, with some reports as high as 500 to 700 millimeters (20 to 28 inches) across a week - more rain than many areas saw in the entire year of 2019. As quick as the rain came, the worry returned just as fast as the world tuned into the news of a worldwide virus fast spreading cross-country through touch and talk. Many Australians watched on in disbelief as some of our most sought-after travel destinations announced closures and friends and family swiftly cancelled holidays while others made arrangements to board the next flight home. The contagious nature of the virus and scalability of the spread saw Australian borders close to all non-residents on the 20th of March, as well as mandatory quarantines implemented, shortly followed by social distancing rules the following day. While news and speculation spiraled around the words 'unprecedented' and 'essential', industry debated the pros and cons of closure, before having the final decision made for us the evening of the 22nd. With just 72 hours to frantically perform as many treatments as humanly possible, provide a support system for our clients and stabilise our own emotions, the professional aesthetic industry as we knew it went into unforeseeable closure. Pushing business owners to pivot their once purely serviced based businesses into online e-commerce stores and begin providing virtual consultations was the pivot our industry needed. We realised the unprofitable model we had been running by for such an extensive period of time was no longer servicing us, our teams or our clients.

Confusion set in as each state started to control their COVID cases and governments had their set sights to ease their restrictions with little leeway. The beauty industry was the first to close, and it was evident by this point, that we were going to be the last to open. Then, the world turned upside down once more, throwing Victorian's into a second round of lockdown. This time, many wouldn't make it. Emotionally and physically exhausted from the back and forth nature of the closure rollercoaster, Victorian's felt more isolated than ever before. The second wave of closures injected a second wave of tenacity and unity as associations, brands, businesses, owners and every person with a voice sung loudly and proudly for Victorian beauty businesses.

This velocity of voice singing in unity showed the power of our presence far and wide from local to state government throughout Metro Melbourne and regional Victoria. The announcement of business opening sent a distilled shockwave through the industry as treatments were able to resume, however treatments on the face were to continue to be halted. The use of masks and extensive PPE procedures, enforced COVID safety plans, reiteration of our previous qualifications and one ferocious publicity push (#SAVEVICSKINCLINICS), the message of our industry was heard and businesses were starting to be seen in an allied health light, rather than our aforementioned alignment with hair. As businesses reopen with a new standard of normal, clients rushed to appointments like ants to sugar, validating the very nature of the treatments we perform on every single level of the physiology of our being. Shoulders once again were able to drop from the pressure of a massage, smiles reappeared on clients faces after having tidy-ups and skin soon cleared after treatments on the face. The year that was 2020 is one the world will undoubtedly remember forever. Though we've been catapulted to places in business and life we may have never thought were possible, we are now armed with the strength and the knowledge that our industry is recession and pandemic proof. We too are proof that when our industry is faced with combat, we come together and create community stronger than any industry has ever seen before. While we close the chapter on 2020 hoping for more calm and clarity to ease us into the new year, there is still a level of uncertainty, but our hope has not diminished. So, as we wait for midnight to announce the new year, let us all say our thanks to 2020 for it's jagged lessons and welcome in the much needed fresh start of 2021. Let us thank everyone who has been there for us this year. Those who have given us a light at the end of the tunnel, those who have provided a helping hand and those who have seen strength in us when we weren't able to. Let not any superstitious belief dictate how we live our life in this new year. It will all be our choices. And if ever we meet unfavourable events, the challenge now is how to respond proactively. Are you ready? Now we all say, happy new year! Hello 2021, we are more than excited to start the new year. Beaute Industrie || Issue 04

SEASONAL SALON style.

Among countless reasons why the Christmas season is tough for any business owner, styling, gifting and merchandising is just another challenge to contend with. For some, there is so much going on that styling becomes an afterthought, and for others who don’t feel they have that natural eye for design, it can be a real struggle to find a balance between elegant and cluttered. If you are one of these business owners feeling like your retail space ends up looking like a dog’s breakfast leading up to Christmas, then read on! We’ve sought some professional advice to help you bring out your most stylish self and leave your Christmas retail space feeling welcoming and sophisticated. Nicola Murray is a Brisbane-based interior designer at She Creates Co, and puts together seriously lust-worthy business spaces around the country. We asked Nicola for her best styling tips for beauty businesses to keep in mind when decorating this season. “Be super clear on your brand and translate the style/vibe of your brand into your space through colour and styling,” says Nicola. “When someone steps into your space they should know it’s your business before they even see signage, as the style and the feeling represents your brand so clearly.” When it comes to colours and decor items, Nicola says to use the 60/30/10 rule. “60% being a neutral colour such as whites and neutrals, 30% being your branding colours with 10% being a pop of colour or coloured items such as gold and greenery.” Beaute Industrie || Issue 04

As for no-nos to avoid, Nicola tells us you shouldn’t decorate just for the sake of decorating. “If you are going to do it, make the most of it and create a beautiful standout solution that makes your clients excited to come into the space and encourages them to get photos - which in turn is great marketing for your brand and is also an opportunity to create content for your business that aligns with the new season. Forget about the traditional Christmas colours and style, break the rules and make it your own. Incorporate your branding colours and go strong with that." So how can businesses stop their styling and decorations from looking cluttered or tacky? Nicola suggests only use 1-3 colours within the same tonal palette. “This is nicer on the eye and more effective. A great tactic is to simplify and amplify, so don't over complicate things, do one solution really well and repeat it. For example spray a tree in your branding colour and decorate it then repeat the tree exactly the same a few times to really create a "wow" solution.” When it comes to merchandising, less is definitely more. “Look through the eyes of the consumer and display your items in a way that makes you feel inspired not overwhelmed. This is extremely important, the way your products are merchandised can affect the quality impression of the product. Work at having all your products styled and placed in groups so there is no confusion. Keep it neat and simple, bring in plants and decorations to complement your product areas and create more interest.” Bliss Brows & Tanning, designed by Nicola Murray. Image Supplied

Tarli's top 4 Christmas merchandising tips. 1. Less is More - Make an impact with a simple bold statement. Over cluttered shelves are not inviting and can seem confusing for buyers. I often advise when I’m doing the final styling for a client after the fitout, to put one of each product out on display and keep the rest out the back or out of site so the product display can become like a small art installation. 2. Tell a story - Group complementary items together. The story should make sense, there should be logic to your groups. Use the power of grouping. Group by colour or theme. Also, group upgrades or upsell products together. For example, place hair oil next to a hair mask to encourage buyers to purchase both for the best results. 3. Know your market - Know your best sellers, AND your best purchasers. Do you sell to your existing clients, or do you sell more to people walking by? This should advise you where to place your product displays. Make the most of your display space, don’t use up your top real estate on low turnover or low-profit items. Position the high-value items and upgrades in the most visible position, ideally near the main counter. 4. Inform - Ethical and value-based brands are on the rise, so make sure you use clever ways to inform the buyer why your product is the best choice for them. Identify the reason you chose to partner with that brand and how and why it connects with your own brand. And remember to change it up to keep it fresh and draw people’s attention.

Another interior designer in the beauty space is Tarli de Courcier from Sabi Interiors, whose work some may recognise from Perth’s incredibly stunning Olive & July skin clinic. Tarli has also weighed in on nailing tasteful Christmas style, particular when it comes to retail and merchandising. “With the festive season in full swing, it’s a great opportunity to enhance the retail presence of your salon, providing your clients with easy gifting opportunities," says Tarli. "However, when it comes to making an impact with your product styling, here are a few tips, to make the most of your efforts and convert to useful sales for your clients.” Bliss Brows & Tanning, designed by Nicola Murray. ust when we thought the hard yards were over. The most manic time of the year is almost upon us, and judging by how busy most salons and clinics around the country have been since reopening after COVID closures, the Christmas period is looking to be as crazy as ever - if not more-so! This being said, booked out schedules and waitlists up to our ears are no reason to sacrifice our mental or physical health. Often one of the first things that falls by the wayside when we’re busy is proper meal breaks.

We understand the burden of trying to cram in both our appointments and our lunches, and can all picture racing out to the back kitchen and stuffing something in our mouths with no more than 2 minutes to spare before our next client walks through the door. But no matter how bad we all know this is for us, we continue to do it. So instead, this year we've asked for some

wisdom from not one but two nutritionists, so we can instead learn to prepare balanced, nutritious meals at lightning speed - so we no longer have to sacrifice our health for our clients’ happiness. Georgie Gunn talks to Beaute Industrie to guide us through some quick 5 minute meals for the silly season. "Fuelling your body with good, basic wholefoods during silly season is essential and does not have to be the headache it often is for many of us," says Georgie. "With all of the beautiful looking buddha bowls and sophisticated salads on social media, it’s easy to adopt the mindset that every meal has to be complex and difficult. They don’t! I’m here to bring it right back to basics for you. I’m talking the old school classics which allow you to put your own spin, flare, pimp-my-ride edge that keeps things interesting, easy and delicious in just 5 minutes. Why? To fuel your bodies with the energy it needs to socialise, dance (no more than 20 people please), work and flush out any excess toxins you may or may not have indulged in from the night before."

"With good food, comes good mood. Those happy hormones simply won’t be able to do their thing without the nutrients they require. You’ll find these in abundance in my recipes below." Serve the remaining salad as a side with the wedge of lemon. FLAVOUR KICKS Add a dash of paprika in the mayo to give it a spicy hit. More wisdom and health services can be found at georgiegunn.com.au Another nutritionist and regular Beaute favourite, Fiona Tuck, is here to share her wisdom on quick and easy meals that will help take care of our minds and bodies this month. “Take a little extra time on the weekend to prep your food for the week ahead and your body and your wallet will thank you for it,” says Fiona. “Ensuring that you have nutritious meals and snacks on hand means that you are nourishing your body and your skin, leaving you feeling energised and radiant.”

FLAVOUR KICKS Omit olive oil from dressing and add 5-7 pitted and chopped olives into salad Add ¼ cup of chopped fresh parsley leaves for some herby goodness. Add ½ cup canned and drained chickpeas for some added flavour and energy NOTES Make a 5 x quantity of the dressing to have in the refrigerator for the weeks lunches. I don’t precook beetroot, it’s such a hassle during a time poor week! I buy freshly cooked, peeled and packaged in the fresh produce section at supermarkets, it’s about $3 for 250g.

Particularly during December, we're often find ourselves eating sugary snacks to get us through the day or give us a little pick-me-up during all the stress. According to Fiona, this can cause ongoing issues rather than a 'quick fix'. “Eating junk food high in fat, salt and sugar can relieve pain or stress and calm us down by stimulating endorphins or feel-good chemicals. Eating these highly palatable foods activates the opioid circuits in the brain, which in turn encourages us to eat more. Junk food is therefore highly adictive- the more you eat, the more you crave. Gradually weaning yourself off these foods and replacing them with healthier options will in time curb the cravings.” “Cravings often become worse when you’re stressed or anxious," Fiona adds. "The more stressed you are, the more you crave high-carbohydrate foods. Beaute Industrie || Issue 04

Carbohydrates boost serotonin, which has a feel-food calming effect. Constant sugar cravings may be a sign that the natural microflora or bacteria that are present in our gut may be out of whack. When the gut is healthy it sends normal, healthy appetite signals; however, when the gut bacteria are out of balance (a condition called dysbiosis) it can upset the healthy functioning of our intestines, which also affects general health and wellbeing.” Here is one of our favourite recipes from Fiona: Abundance bowl ½ avocado Kale leaves, stems removed ½ red onion ½ cup brussel sprouts 1x sweet potato (small) 2x yellow squash ¼ cup pumpkin noodles (spiralised) ¼ cup zucchini zoodles (spiralised) 2x radish 2 tbsp pomegranate seeds Handful of English spinach Protein of choice (Chicken, fish etc) Dressing ½ tbsp Vita Sol Purity Wholefood Powder ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) 1/2 fresh lime, juiced Salt and pepper to taste Walnuts & chervil/parsley to garnish Preheat the oven to 180 degrees Celsius. Chop the sweet potato, onion and yellow squash into bite-sized pieces and lay on a baking tray along with the brussel sprouts. Drizzle the veggies with a little EVOO and roast for 25-30 minutes. In a fry pan, add a little more EVOO and add the kale leaves. Sauté over a medium heat, stirring through salt and pepper, for around 4 minutes until softened. Start to assemble the bowl starting with the greens - a bed of spinach, then add kale, roasted brussels and zucchini zoodles. Top with pumpkin noodles, roasted sweet potato, radish, onion, squash, avocado, chervil and walnuts. Finish with a sprinkling of pomegranate seeds. Make the dressing by mixing together the lime juice, Purity Wholefood Powder, EVOO and seasoning. Pour the lime dressing and enjoy! Add a protein of your choice if you wish. COMMUNITYconversation Holding space for progressive and inclusive conversation, our Facebook Community produces thought-provoking and insightful delights into the lives and businesses of our community members. This month, we've been loving the conversation on seeking advice across products, services and business expansion.

With 90 comments on the post, Jessica Rowe's thread sparked quite the conversation. "Is anyone else feeling slightly underwhelmed with brow lamination?" In comparison to keratin straightening plus the added retail and client upkeep to maintain the result, Jessica found many other community members agreed. Lee Shaw started the commentary by wondering 'if a tint, shape and good brow soap would not offer the same result', while Beth Purcell was too feeling the same before swapping brands, only now realising the true wow-factor that clients seem to be thrilled with.

Making the move from Sole Tradership into employer can often seem daunting. What kind of procedures need to be put into place and where does one start onboarding an employee into a business where there hasn't been such structure in the past? Amanda Beckman posed this question to the Beaute Community after being slightly worried about the current industry recruitment landscape and her current demanding fully booked appointment schedule.

Chelsea Deboer on the other hand says that she 'loves brow lamination' and it’s her most popular service. 'I have recommended it over tattoo for some clients who have oddly shaped tails. Each to their own, it takes practice', with similar sentiments Liesl Pivac adds 'lamination is one of our most popular treatments! We are obsessed but it definitely needs to be done correctly'.

Knowing too well the feeling of this cross-road, Jasmine Scarr says, 'I hired my first staff member at 27 and am now almost 35 so I waited a bit to start a family - I’ve been very upfront to my clients and staff about my plans and growth and it worked out for me when stepping back/taking holidays'. Skye Louise adds some sage advice about knowing what qualities you want before hiring. "Do a trade test. Follow up references. Make sure they will suit the vision you have for your business."

How have your clients responded to brow lamination services?

Would you provide any further advice?

One of the most sticky situations therapists face is when they're caught between a dermatologists recommendation and a client concern. Rachael Richardson found herself faced with a client who was in an accident where she fell face first into a fire while camping. To assist with wound healing, her doctors suggested she use Sorbolene for the burns. Though Rachael's clients skin is healing well, Rachael's skin knowledge is conflicted with the doctors prescription. The community adds weight to the conversation. Brayden Rogers notes that the product is 'very occlusive, retains water and speeds up wound healing' while Nika D'jamirze sheds insight into her husbands work as a Doctor, adding that 'these doctors only treat people while their skin is very highly compromised, this is what they’re trained in, not the aftermath, months or years down the road when the skin is healed and they are potentially able to start treating their skin with active ingredients'. What's your go-to wound healing?

This month saw the arrival of a new skin supplement range - Advanced Nutrition Programme, who will be distributed by Margifox Distributors. Launched in London in 2006, Advanced Nutrition Programme is currently stocked by dermatologists and skin experts around the globe, with the brand's arrival in Australia officially giving it a presence in 20 countries. The brand aims to deliver internal vitamins and nutrients that can be used in conjunction with topical skincare in order to complement and maximise the effect of one's homecare and professional treatment regimes. Managing Director, David Alpert, says "We have made it our business to look at, understand skin, and find out how it is that we can help skin through oral skincare. As many of you as skincare professionals know, it's extremely hard to get molecules to penetrate the skin from the outside, so getting something at efficacious levels through the skin is challenging. When you feed the skin from the inside, the way nature designed it, it's much easier to feed all of the cells all over the body and you can feed it for 24 hours a day and bathe them in nutrients."

An Australian First 21% Niacinamide Terri Vinson, founder and formulator of Synergie Skin, has achieved an exciting Australian first with the release of her XCell B Serum, containing a whopping 21% niacinamide. “When I first formulated my original Vitamin B serum over 15 years ago, women were gobsmacked at how their skin transformed and became more luminous in just a few days. Niacinamide has become an increasingly popular ingredient and is one of my favourites due to the multitude of cosmeceutical benefits. I thought it was time to take my original, award-winning formula and see how I could create an even more potent option. I am so proud to release this Australian first!” says Terri. Another Step Towards Inclusivity The consumer makeup industry has taken another positive step towards inclusivity with M·A·C Cosmetics' introduction of the ’67 Shades, 67 Faces’ campaign, highlighting beauty and diversity that spans our country. Influencers including she/ her, he/ him, they/ them across First Nation (Indigenous,) Caucasian, Asian, Middle Eastern, Indian decent and African backgrounds were invited to virtually match their Studio Fix Fluid Shade via the M·A·C Cosmetics Foundation Finder Tool, an online service that works with skin tone and undertone in order to match your foundation shade. 37

Lisa and Matt Williams of Professional Beauty Solutions Family owned and operated by Matt and Lisa Williams, Professional Beauty Solutions started out over two decades ago with just one brand (the ever-popular Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics), and has grown to become Australia’s most trusted distributor of professional beauty brands. Representing 15 worldclass brands, they currently supply over 2000 salons, spas and clinics across Australia with innovative, high-performing beauty brands, along with exceptional service, training, marketing support and business education. Listen here.

Stefanie Milla, Dermalist Skincare CEO and Founder From a young age where her chemistry and scienceloving father would bring home the latest research journals for her to read, Stefanie has held an interest in advanced technology, which comes as no surprise as to how her career in the aesthetic industry has planned out today. Stef is a skin expert in the highest form of the title, whose passion for client outcomes and results has driven her through to further study as a Dermal Educator.

Tandia Walsh of Mother SPF MOTHER SPF was born out of necessity several years back when Tandia’s mother was diagnosed with Leukemia. After extensive research to help her mother reduce the amount of toxic chemicals in her skincare whilst undergoing treatment, Tandia discovered how nasty some conventional sunscreens can be and couldn’t find a mineral sunscreen suitable for everyday wear, so she decided to be a boss lady aka daughter of the year and make her own. Apart from the incredible story behind the brand and Tandias passion to bring the product to life, Mother SPF is a unique blend of ingredients, ethics and values that the company abides by which clients and our professional industry are seemingly loving. Listen here.

For the past 20 years, Stef has directed some of Australia’s most highly regarded dermal clinics where she has lead teams of dermal clinicians, nurses and doctors to perform non-invasive skin and laser treatments. That career recap would generally be enough to satisfy anyone, however, through noticing a disconnect between a therapist recommendation and client compliance in understanding why they had to use such a vast amount of products at home to gain the desired result, Stef saw a need to simplify but not compromise the way we achieve healthy skin and developed Dermalist. Stef and Tamara do not hold back in this episode, discussing the need for science and beauty to be combined, the truth behind multifunctional skincare, inclusive marketing campaigns, and what makes Dermalist so revolutionary in the way it works. Listen here.
