You know when you're in a conversation and someone says something and you have so much to say on the topic but you cannot find the words to say? Well, I've been feeling like that about life recently. The prospect of celebrating wins and planning for the future while holding our breath has placed me in limbo - somewhere between crawling and walking almost. It's like I'm trying to crawl before I've learnt how to walk. I want to get up off the floor and put on foot in front of the other, but at the same time I haven't quite mastered the concept of hand to feet coordination and the weight of my body isn't yet ready for my legs. The most frustrating thing about the entire situation is that I've already learnt how to run! So, how did I end up back here? Will I remember how to run when the time comes? For the most part, people in our industry are runners, they're the doers. A new facial, you learn it. New ingredient, you study. Advanced machinery, you master it. So when a doer isn't doing what are they doing? I think the answer is - we are 'being'. And I'm kind of sick of just doing. Because after all, a human doing and a human being are two very different things.

Taking a look at how we can can activate the 'being' part of life, enters July with some pretty promising initiatives and events. With last month's launch of the Aesthetic & Beauty Industry Council (ABIC), the fire in our belly has been lit with talks of governance, regulation and compliance, along with an abundance of support gives me sour-worm like tingles that I'm more than ready to gobble up! Ready for us to all be in the same space at the same time is the exciting promise of Beauty Expo Australia. More so than usual, this year's expo is so much more than just an expo it's the chance to reconnect, reinspire and reignite our passion. I don't know about you, but I'm ready to hug every damn person in our industry about one million times upon entry into that hall! There's also some pretty cool initiatives happening around our sector including sustainability through product packaging which Rachel Medlock writes a beautiful piece about, as well as the ever progressive wellness space, giving us all the good vibes under the umbrella of 'self care' which Mala McAlpin brazenly writes. Our Beaute Intern Mary-Ann pieces together a comparison on Beauty Therapy V Dermal Therapy and takes us back to our original roots of study which lets me come full circle into the need of 'being' more than we are currently doing. f you are as excited as we are about Beauty Expo 2021, and travelling in from interstate, you’ll likely want to make the most of your trip and create a weekend that is as fabulous and action-packed as it can be!
We’ve taken the hard work out of the planning and designed the perfect Sydney weekend itinerary, so you can make the most of your time here, see some gorgeous newly-launched locations, and hit that perfect balance between business and pleasure. Here are a few of our top recommendations, as written by a Sydney-sider.

Every lavish detail of the clinic has been thoughtfully hand-curated, from the olive and citrus trees, the Greek feature tiles, the large arched doorways to the decadent marble kitchen where you will have coffee lovingly prepared, down to the extravagant outdoor pool complete with outdoor cabanas and the Little Europe logo tiled on the pool’s floor. The bright pops of hot pink Bouganvillias throughout offers a pleasant summery feel no matter the weather, and all of its impressive features come together beautifully and tastefully. Among its vast number of services, the clinic has already developed quite the following for its teeth whitening treatments, so why not get those pearly whites glistening before you step through those conference doors tomorrow?

With so much to do and so little time, we recommend flying into Sydney Airport bright and early Friday morning. Thankfully, whether you’re travelling by Uber or public transport, you will find yourself within close and convenient proximity to the city. ICC Sydney Darling Harbour is also just a hop, skip and a jump from the CBD. While you have the entire day free to yourself before you dive headfirst into conference mode, we recommend a trip to Little Europe, a newly launched Greekthemed paradise located west of Sydney. It’s a little ways to drive, roughly 35-40 minutes from Sydney, so we recommend the visit if you have hired a car for the weekend. We promise - it’s worth the trip. You will quite literally feel as though you are strolling through Mykonos the moment you walk down the paved drive and through the front entrance.

You know what else is conveniently located from ICC, just a mere 2km away? Crown Spa. Whether you’re staying at the hotel or just swinging by for the spa, it is an absolute must-visit. Book yourself a luxurious signature massage to melt away the tension of this year’s stresses so you can head into your weekend ache-free and ready to learn, then sit back and take in the sumptuous surroundings in the aqua retreat, complete with vitality spa, steam room, sauna and swiss shower.
6pm Dinner at Grounds Of The City
This one is for those staying in the hustle and bustle of the city centre. You’ve probably heard of the Grounds of Alexandria before - an absolute Sydney icon and institution. Well, for those who can’t make it out to Alexandria, the Grounds team decided to bring a little of their flagship eatery to the city, opening Grounds of the City right next to Town Hall station. It’s the perfect option for those that enjoy the paddock-to-plate style but just a little bit fancy, complete with gorgeous cocktails.

7am Pilates at Vive Active
If you’re an early riser, we recommend kick-starting your day with a Vive Active class. Vive is an ultra-modern chain of reformer pilates studios, with their latest opening in Neutral Bay just a few weeks ago. Vive is like no reformer class you’ve done before, and they go the extra mile to set their brand apart from the rest. Studio finishes are luxe and modern, with hair styling tools and blissful showers in the changing rooms, and the reformer studio itself feels more like a nightclub than a gym. Bright LED lights and pumping music set the tone for an invigorating workout, and mirrored ceilings make it easy to apply corrections and follow along with others if you aren’t sure what to do next! Their most popular studio is located in Double Bay, just a few kilometres from the city centre.
8am breakfast at Little Jean
While you’re in Double Bay, stop in for a spot of breakfast at nearby Little Jean, one of the most popular brekky destinations in the area. Best of all, their ethos is sustainable and ethical, with products sourced from local and passionate suppliers only.
9am Expo Day 1
It’s time to head on over to ICC for Beauty Expo Day 1. This year hosts an absolutely jam-packed conference agenda, catering to interests in business, dermal, wellness, and aesthetics. 5pm Glow Up at Blown Lux
Once you’ve exhausted yourself for day one, it’s time for a glow up before dinner. If you’re staying by the waterfront and fancy a short walk, head over to Blown Lux 1.5km away in Barangaroo. You will enjoy a beautiful scenic walk with views of the Harbour and when you arrive, can sip a glass of bubbles while you enjoy a full face makeup refresh and blow-dry or style session, according to your package of choice.
7pm Dinner at Barangaroo House
From Blown Lux you will be minutes from one of Sydney’s most revered fine dining destinations, Barangaroo House. On level two, you will find the elegantly lit, leather-lounged oasis that is Bea Restaurant, and if you decide it’s a little too early for dinner at this point, you could opt to head first to level three and enjoy a cocktail or two at the stunning rooftop Smoke Bar.

7am Bondi to Bronte walk
Another Sydney gem, the iconic Bondi to Bronte walk is an absolute classic for locals and visitors alike. It spans over roughly 3.5kms, including Bondi, Tamarama and Bronte beaches, starting at the southern end of Bondi Beach. It’s a relatively easy-grade walk, including occasional seating, and several staircases. Guides recommend allowing 1.5 hours to complete.
9am Return to Bondi for wellness drinks and Slow House

Whether you brave the return walk back to Bondi, jump in an uber, or perhaps even start your walk at Bronte and finish at Bondi instead, we recommend making your way back and hitting Orchard Street. Founded in 2012 by Kirsten Shanks, a qualified Naturopath with over 20 years experience, Orchard St. is dedicated to herbal holistic health concoctions. Their North Bondi Elixir Bar has a full range of organic juices, hot herbal elixirs, organic coffee and a delicious range of nourishing delights that are available to eat in or takeaway. Once 10am rolls around, you can head to Slow House, Sydney’s newest wellness destination specialising in Infrared Saunas. Various packages are available, and in addition to a sauna, you can complete your visit with any combination of Omnilux, traditional coal sauna, ice bath, or body scrub.
12pm Complete Your Expo Visit
Mosey on back to ICC to wrap up your expo visit, hopefully feeling completely detoxed, refreshed and invigorated! Partake in your chosen conference topics, peruse the exhibits, and be sure to grab any off-thestand specials you can find before the day wraps at 5pm (final conference topic ends 4pm).
5pm Time To Get Glam

You’ll either be headed back home Monday morning OR - if you’ve been travel-deprived, as so many of us have, you may want to extend this trip into the following week. If you choose to do so, there are several options we would recommend. The first is the famous Villa Thalgo, just short of an hour from the city. Located alongside Crowne Plaza Hawkesbury Valley, this is ideally situated for those who don’t want to stray too far from the airport but are looking for some gorgeous, quiet countryside to relax by. Villa Thalgo is set within 8 hectares of manicured, landscaped gardens, and features a wet steam room, hydrotherapy spa, and beautiful indoor heated swimming pool. Guests can also enjoy access to their relaxation lounge, serving complimentary refreshments for a period of up to 2 hours. If you're ready to truly spoil yourself, a number of packages are available, including spa treatments and accommodation packages. A little further from the city, this one is for those who have been dreaming of a Hunter Valley getaway. In addition to your wine country experience, add a true wellness retreat to your itinerary with the new Elysia Wellness Retreat, located in Pokolbin. As with similar retreats, various package options are available, with most of these including airport transfers, daily meals and classes, and most importantly, treatments at the spa. Each year, 9 million metric tonnes of plastic enter our oceans in addition to the 150 million metric tonnes already circulating the waters. Unfortunately, the beauty industry, in all its wonderfully diverse forms, is a key contributor to this.

For years, eco-trends have circulated the notion of ‘living green’ and how making ecologically conscious or ‘green’ swaps contribute to a healthier and thriving environment. Green living, including green beauty, is built around creating transparency with ingredients, awareness of harmful chemicals, ethical product sourcing and sustainable logistics. Whilst it’s incredible that so many consumers and businesses alike have truly taken some huge steps in a green direction, the preservation and protection of our oceanic environment still needs a lot of help. According to the official Ocean Conservancy Organisation, plastic impacts over 700 marine life species across the globe. Plastic has been found in more than 60% of all seabirds and in 100% of sea turtles species, that mistake plastic for food, causing life-threatening problems. Despite many people’s efforts to go green, plastic consumption is expected to continue to rise over the coming years. It’s time for us to start thinking not just green, but blue too, and empower our marine ecosystems through our purchasing choices. Part of the blue movement that we can all get involved in is Blue Beauty. Blue Beauty exists to support ocean conservation by prioritising reef-safe ingredients, formulations that are not detrimental to marine life and packaging that is zero-waste and virtually plasticfree.

The same way green beauty products highlight clean ingredients and sustainable packaging, Blue Beauty advocates for the end of “one and done” products, bleaching formulations and harmful microplastics that accelerate the beauty industry’s contribution to marine waste. Brands need to consider the entire life of a product – from the moment it’s developed to where it ends up once finished by its customer. When developing a formulation, how much water is required? When the product is washed off by the customer, are those ingredients ending up in waterways? When the product is thrown away by the customer, where does it end up and how long can we expect it to exist? There’s a lot to consider with many beauty brands needing to change their procedures to make the shift to team blue. Fortunately, brands have already started to implement blue habits into their product formulations as well as their packaging and distribution. Today, we’re shining a spotlight on the leading beauty brands that have gone blue for a lifetime of beautiful oceans.

Everyday Humans
There are a number of common chemicals known to be detrimental to our marine ecosystems, in particular, those found in sunscreens. Oxybenzone and Octinoxate are noted to be contributing to coral bleaching, caused by swimmers wearing SPF when enjoying the waves. By no means are these the only two formulations contributing to reef damage, but they are standout ones. In fact, Hawaii has banned the sale of products with these ingredients in them to protect their tropical waters. Now, this isn’t an excuse to stop wearing sunscreen but rather be mindful of the SPF products we’re choosing. A brand that’s fully committed itself to the Blue Beauty movement is Everyday Humans, a sassy skincare brand that’s known for its award-winning SPF. Everyday Humans’ Resting Beach Face is a SPF 30+ broad-spectrum sunscreen that contains an exclusively reeffriendly formulation of Homosalate (8%), Octisalate (4%), Avobenzone (3%) and Octocrylene (2%). The art of minimalism has been a hot topic for the past few years, beginning with many of us learning how to roll our clothes and remove the things from our lives that don’t ‘spark us joy’. Consumers are now Marie Kondo-ing their beauty routines with stripped back hair, makeup and skincare routines trending globally. Sometimes we don’t even realise how much we’ve refined our beauty habits until we come across a 2009 vs 2021 makeup routine on TikTok.
Yikes, whoever said that Maybelline Mousse Foundation was a good choice for me seriously didn’t have my back! Whether they’ve been a victim of too many actives at once, their stage of life has changed or their existing routine isn’t sparking them joy, many have farewelled the extensive 12step routine and gone back to basics. Now, I’m not talking about the Clinique 3-step routine from the ’90s but instead, choosing to invest in core products rather than an overwhelming routine that we barely remember to stick to. This has surged a movement known as Skinimalism and I am a newly noted Skinimalist. So, with this in mind, is it time for therapists to strip back their prescriptions to avoid overwhelming their clients?

Undoubtedly, when we’re passionate about something, we want to share every inch of our knowledge with the person listening.
For me, it’s Khloe Kardashian’s dating history, for therapists, it’s flexing their skincare knowledge. Passion is a wonderful thing but when it begins to overwhelm the client, you start to lose them - and you know what they say, when we confuse, we lose. The likes of jargon, professional lingo and the endless product combinations on offer can be the unfortunate gateway to a client that isn’t receptive to your prescription or confident in their purchases. It comes down to balancing how you showcase your expertise whilst keeping the client at the forefront. Do they really need that pre-cleansing oil, post-exfoliation enzyme and 4 different types of moisturisers? Probably not. They just want products that are going to work and more often than not, are easy and quick to apply. It’s important to not get Skinimalism mixed up with clients who are always driven by price. Many Skinimalists are perfectly content with the investment of professional skincare and are more driven by easing their time-poor lifestyles with the convenience of a fewer step routine. Let’s consider your client’s stages of life for a moment. A mum with a newborn barely has time to brush her hair let alone follow a 12-step routine. She’s taken an hour for herself to get a facial and decided to stock up on some product whilst she’s in the clinic. During your consultation and general in-treatment conversation, you’d already know the stage of life she’s in, especially if she’s caught a few zzz’s during the treatment. This is your cue to not overwhelm her with a complicated routine but choose a few key products that leave her feeling empowered about her skin – especially if that skin has been through the wringer over the past 9 months.

If your client is driven by price, this doesn’t always mean they’re not committed to their skin and shouldn’t be a reason for therapists to shy away from them. More often than not, it means they’re realistic about what they can promise to their skin therapist. Skinimalism fits perfectly with this demographic as it gives them the best of both worlds – the quality skincare they’re craving but in an easy to manage portion. One standout way therapists can cater to them is through the hero product. For younger demographics, the hero product can set them on the pathway to beautiful skin. I look back at my days as a university student. Of course, I was beauty-obsessed but I frequently needed to choose between a new face mask and a can of tuna for dinner.
The same goes for celebrity-owned beauty brands such as Kylie Skin and Go-To Skincare. When you take away the fancy packaging and million-dollar marketing budgets, these ranges are not complicated and in fact, they only ever require half a dozen steps for a solid day AND night routine.
If I was offered a hero product or two that focused on my key skin concerns or goals, I’d not only feel less overwhelmed at the checkout but more committed to that brand in the long run and its paired back routine. It demonstrates that during the consultation experience, the therapist had actively listened beyond my skin concerns and worked within my means.
They focus on the foundational steps of any basic skincare regime – cleansing, treating and protecting. This is Skinimalism at its finest and their fast-tracked ticket to cult status proves that people are really connecting with the concept.
The likes of social media influencers and beauty podcasts regularly lean into the concept of Skinimalism, often with the help of brands like The Ordinary, and boy, does it drive consumer interest. Not only are they promoting something that is easy and often affordable but hey, sometimes it even works!
Now, before you get caught up in arguing about their formulations and ingredients quality, remember the key message of why they’re on your radar right now – they’ve done something right! Their products explain very simply what they offer the customer, clearly spell out how and when to use the product and seal the deal with a tonne of video content to visually demonstrate the product in use. I’m not suggesting we all head to Sephora and get ourselves some Kylie Skin Walnut Scrub *shudders* but I think we can all agree that customers want simplicity from their beauty experts more than ever and those that don’t get onboard, may just lose them to another brand. So, how can we introduce some Skinimalist vibes into a clinic setting? 1. Strip it back to basics for clients that are overwhelmed by their current routine 2. Have hero products on hand to add targeted treatments to a paired back routine 3. Harness multitasking products that provide clients dual steps from one application 4. Craft your own routines and kits to make retail a breeze for your team 5. Consider content such as step-by-step videos and prescription pads to cater to visual and auditory learners 6. Always consider the stage of life your client is in – what is going to give them the best outcome for their time, energy and money? So, are you ready? The simple life awaits.

WHEN WELLNESS IS A VIBE (LITERALLY) Self-care is so much more than a fancy candle and sheet mask. We get up close and personal with the brands making self-pleasure a self-care priority. Words by Mala McAlpin
The topic of wellness has dominated our industry for quite some time now, but we are continuing to see shifts in what that word actually means, and how it translates to our businesses, treatments, and clients’ everyday lives. One day, wellness is all about nutrition, then mindfulness before quickly shifting to talk all things bathing and hydrotherapy. Perhaps this is due to the industry’s ever-evolving nature, the ambiguity around a word itself or perhaps it simply comes down to boredom from what feels like another pandemicinduced buzzword. Whatever the cause, the latest iteration of the Big W is directly linked to the Big O and has the industry (and its customers) substantially more excited than its forerunners. That’s right - for those of you who hadn’t heard, self-pleasure is the latest wellness trend on our radars and it's hot hot hot. Disrupting the beauty market with a self-pleasure surge is our industry's very own, endota spa. The team at endota made waves when they introduced their very own self-pleasure retail range last year.

Many wondered at the time if it was an April Fools joke, but since their launch, endota has kept the good vibes going with the expansion of their Women's Health category. endota currently offers five intimate devices, each designed to take you on a different self-care journey with one shared destination in mind. Customers can pair their pastel purchase with a selection of feminine care add-ons including intimate wash and breast oil (and let's face it, who doesn't love a retail upgrade). Reportedly, these are currently only available online and not in the spas themselves but we wonder if this will change in the future. Many in our community commented that they felt confident recommending self-pleasure as self-care where others are still uneasy about recommending a face serum, let alone a vibrator. When selecting endota's 'Intimate Devices' page, a pop-up appears to share their ethos behind expanding their Women's Health range. Its eloquently written copy serves less as a 'warning' and more the 'why' behind their collection and we don't have to tell you twice how much we love a brand leaning into their 'why'.

It reads: “endota was founded to inspire people to connect with themselves and make personal wellbeing a priority. This encompasses every part of you, your physical, mental and sexual self. We have partnered with Smile Makers as we believe that sexual intimacy is a natural, enjoyable and empowering element in life. The following pages contain intimate device images and usage guides.” There is even a quiz to allow shoppers to discover which vibe is right for them. Another major player in the self-pleasure game is Adore Beauty, who has an entire ‘Sex’ category in their online shop. It too includes a pop-up disclaimer, though not nearly as eloquently worded around wellness as endota's is. The category includes everything from vibrators, to lubricants which call themselves ‘serums’ (and honestly, are bottled very similar to your fave Vitamin C), personal moisturisers, aesthetically pleasing condom collections even libidoboosting supplements. Transforming the conversation around wellness encompassing self-pleasure and self-love is VUSH, an edgy sexual wellness brand that's dominated the market with the help of Bachie favourite Abbie Chatfield and a cheeky feature in Cardi B's film clip for UP (we're totally not sorry about getting that song stuck in your head). Designing her own 25-speed vibrator in collaboration with the brand, Abbie says “it's time to celebrate your pleasure and give your sexual wellness story the happy ending it deserves.” VUSH has a very strong emphasis around wellness as opposed to sex; in fact, when you Google the brand, it's SEO headlines include ‘Pioneering Wellness’ and ‘Sexual Wellness Devices’. They're committed to taking away the 'shame' associated with self-pleasure and creating a safe space for consumers to learn what floats their boat. Imbibe Living has been celebrating feminine health in all its glory quietly in the background this entire time with their cult classic V-Oil, a blend of “100% organic, cold-pressed plant oils to nourish, hydrate and support V-health” and “The ultimate oil for vulva health, skin, face, intimacy, and self-care.”

The evolution of self-love and empowerment is not only limited to home products but professional services too! Though many of us may have written off the ‘butt facial’ or the ‘vajacial’ as a passing phase, brands like Esthemax have shown an increase in the number of social media posts lately displaying professional treatments masks applied to both the buttocks and the entire vaginal area - that’s right, the whole shebang! Even outside of the beauty industry, there is a noticeable effort to normalise the conversations around sex, selfpleasure, and sexual health and wellbeing, with both the service and retail market booming in response. Awardwinning Psycho-Sexologist Chantelle Otten has launched her own online course for sexual self-esteem, Emma Watson has publicly backed an online orgasm education site, and of course, Gwyneth Paltrow famously released a candle scent entitled ‘This Smells Like My Vagina’ which sold out in minutes. Aussie comedy queen Celeste Barber hilariously responded shortly afterwards by releasing a candle called ‘This Does Not Smell Like My Vagina’ in collaboration with her candle-making mother Kath Barber. GP's response? Send Celeste her Goop Vibrator that has sold out in seconds - with an ever-growing waitlist. So, what are your thoughts on our industry embracing what it means to show yourself total self-care and self-love? very person in the beauty industry has asked this question at least once in their life.
Whether you’re in high school trying to discover your career path, heading into a career change, or perhaps you’re already in the industry and looking for further study, we've all questioned, “what really is the difference between a beauty therapist and a dermal therapist?” It’s a relevant question because on the surface, especially from a client’s point of view, both job titles look almost indistinguishable so, is there a straightforward answer to this? The clear-cut, straight to the point answer is along the lines of this; beauty therapy studies are primarily focused on providing a beauty service, whereas dermal therapy is targeted to helping treat a skin concern. But we all know that the answer is truly more complex. Different institutions in our industry provide different units of studies and methods of learning so not every course is exactly the same. They are continuously edited and altered every couple of years to be up to date with the current growth of the beauty industry not to mention, the beauty industry is not entirely regulated. However, the fundamental training is enforced to ensure the safety of both clients and therapists.

qualification Qualification Difference
The difference in qualifications is the main distinctness between the two and is the main point to describe to clients. Those who study and perform beauty therapy treatments have a diploma that can be obtained through nationally recognised vocational education. A dermal therapy qualification, however, has a longer duration and is equivalent to a Bachelor Degree that spans a total of four years. Although the dermal therapy qualification has more formal training than a beauty therapist, a highly popular education pathway that many students undertake is completing their beauty therapy diploma first and then completing the dermal therapy qualification so that the best of both worlds can be achieved. Many educational institutes implement clear pathways for this, with the intention to provide an easy transition between the qualifications.

Content Knowledge
In the Beauty Industry
Dermal therapy has a focus on the theory elements of the industry which entails subjects including cosmetic chemistry, dermoscopy, infection control, and Occupational Health and Safety (OH&S). Laser safety units are also taught in order for therapists to safely operate machines and devices, to alter parameters specific for clients as well as extensive clinical consultation and skin analysis.
Treatments in dermal therapy are performed in a professional clinical setting. Some workplaces also give dermal therapists an opportunity to be able to observe surgeons or dermatologists regarding skin concerns and treatments. Dermal therapists work individually using machines and make independent decisions for treatments but also have opportunities to work in a team. They often require product training for brands and treatments however are expected to know treatment mechanisms as part of their studies.
Background knowledge of treatments is an integral component for any therapist in this industry. For beauty therapy, the education provided is to understand skin anatomy to support sufficient treatment and product recommendations. The focus is mainly on hands-on training but there is additional theory content to understand the framework of the beauty industry workforce and safe hygiene practice.
Treatments and Services Expertise
Both therapists, despite their differences, share a common goal - uplift and enhance the wellbeing of their client. Beauty therapy services excel in hands-on training and techniques including body massages, tanning, makeup application, lash and brow treatments, aromatherapy, nail care and waxing. On the contrary, dermal therapy has an emphasis on that their services are not “fluffy” treatments. Dermal therapists have the ability to safely operate laser and light devices for superficial cosmetic treatments concerning hair reduction, skin rejuvenation, tattoo removal, vascularity and pigmentation concerns. They also have an education and practice for facial treatments such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion and skin needling as well as lymphatic treatments and wound management techniques.

In the workplace, the two look similar. Beauty therapists are often working further than their qualifications, carefully instructed by their senior therapists and managers. An extension of treatment mechanisms are often directed by the brands they're working with and are tailored as such to those ranges. Beauty therapists regularly work in a team but also have experience in making independent decisions.
Future Endeavours
As beauty therapy students have units dedicated to fundamental business relating knowledge including customer service, finance and work compliances, there is limelight towards career paths as salon managers and owners. Beauty therapists tend to find careers in the spa sector and have the responsibility to develop a relaxing and calm atmosphere that reflects on the treatments. This pathway can lead therapists to acquire jobs on cruise ships, hotels, salons, clinics and resorts. It is common for dermal therapy students to work alongside other professions in the skin industry such as dermatologists, surgeons and nurses due to having training in dermoscopy, OH&S and infection control. Dermal therapists can also further study nursing if looking into injectables as a career prospect. Furthermore, dermal therapists have been approached by places like aged care facilities due to their knowledge in skin management and wound care. And of course, they can work in skin clinics to perform skin treatments.

Cherish exists to fund medical research that helps prevent, diagnose and find kinder and more effective treatment of gynaecological cancers. It was so apparent to our family that the treatment options for gynaecological cancer are far behind other cancers. I vowed to do what I could to change the experience for other women and families.”

Having worked at some of the United Kingdom’s leading semiconductor and food research centres and with a background in chemistry, microelectronics and IT, Manchester University graduate Nick Wallen's research led him to the disturbing conclusion that artificial chemicals in everyday cosmetics could be a primary cause of the large increase in problem skin across the developed world. Further research showed how these synthetic ingredients were linked with altering the skin’s natural ecosystem, and alarmingly how many so-called ‘natural’ cosmetics contained these potentially disruptive additives too. Linda Russell had been an avid user of various so-called ‘natural’ skin lotions and creams for years but developed horrible skin problems on her face which she couldn’t seem to get rid of. Medical specialists prescribed steroidal creams, anti-fungals and antibiotics that only seemed to make the situation worse, and over the counter antiseptic creams, expensive herbal ointments and balms from online ‘niche’ skin care companies didn’t help either. The frightening thought that her use of everyday cosmetics could have been making her skin problems worse led to the creation of JooMo®. Dr. Martina is the Principle Dentist of Martina Dental, and has been a dentist for over 22 years. She studied dentistry in her native land, Ireland, before migrating to Sydney after meeting her husband in Adelaide, where she was on a forensic dentistry scholarship at Adelaide University. You’ll hear by her passion today which shines through the conversation that sees it as a great privilege to work on people’s teeth and takes this responsibility seriously, undergoing professional training in communications, psychology and neuropsychology so that she’s better able to make her patients feel comfortable by using a caring, empathetic approach. Because of her love for cosmetic dentistry and love of phi proportions +Aesthetics was born. To enhance her knowledge for her patients undergoing aesthetic treatments, She has studied a Diploma in Dermal Therapies, and is currently studying a Masters of Facial Aesthetics in the UK. In an enormous episode for you today, Martina talks about her journey from dentistry into aesthetics, shares her insights on the mouth to skin and body connection, we venture into motherhood and mindset and everything in between. Amy Doja started her career in a very corporate setting, working for a film distributing company before later moving on to a transport company as a Business and Operations Manager. So, after coffee with a girlfriend, Amy went online to try and find out more about the treatments friends were suggesting; which turned out to be a lot more complicated than it sounded.
